“I Think He Will Become A Problem”

October 18th, 2023

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

For the first time this year, Bucs coach Todd Bowles got a good look at first-round draft pick defensive tackle Calijah Kancey in game action on Sunday.

Sure, Kancey played in the season opener. He logged all of 11 snaps. Kancey reinjured the same calf injury in that game as he first injured early in training camp. That kept him off the field until the Detroit game Sunday.

There, Kancey had 40 snaps — 57 percent of the defensive snaps. By comparison, Vita Vea had 44 snaps for 63 percent.

NextGen Stats said Kancey had one of the best games for a rookie defensive tackle in years. .

Bowles, normally reserved when speaking on the record, especially about rookies, seemed to give Kancey an unusually high grade for Sunday.

“I thought he was active,” Bowles said of Kancey. “I thought he was very active. I like the things he is doing.

“Obviously he has to get the rust off with the hand placement. The more he plays, the more that will come.

“Very excited to have him out there. I think he will become a problem. And, he’s a good pressure player for us.”

This is borderline over-the-top praise for Bowles.

Sometimes, Detroit either didn’t expect much from the Pitt product or didn’t know who he was. While he had a lot of single coverage, there were times when Kancey ran an inside stunt that Detroit was waiting for him. And they fully took him out of the play.

But now there is film of Kancey, not just a handful of plays. You can bet Atlanta won’t send a single blocker after him the way Kancey tore up the Lions. And when offenses do that, it just frees up Vita Vea.

Pick your own poison, Dixie Chicks.

Good to focus on the positives after Detroit …
A lot of amazing young talent pulled out of the last two drafts — CK, Hall, Goedeke, Zyon, Izien, Yaya, Camarda

These guys will be here a long time.

Desmond is not finishing the game!
    LFG!!!!

Kancey very well will be the best pick of our last top 3…(all D) JTS, Hall….Kancey.

There is no way you double team him and leave VV single covered……

  4. Pelsbuc61 Says:

I don’t understand why they only play around 50% – 60% of the snaps. I don’t remember Sapp,Rice, Brooks, Barber, Lynch only playing half the games.

Our DTs are gonna have to do all the work because our edge rushers are softer than the pillsbury doughboy!

  6. #99 the big fella Says:

We have no edge rush! imagine if we had 2 good edge rushers quarterbacks would be really scared to face this defense

  7. Obvious Says:

I’ve seen a few claim that they had Kancey’s back and said they just knew he was going to be a star. I didn’t really see them but maybe I just didn’t go back to look.

What I said to the doubters was a little different. What I said is what I maintain.

Calijah Kancey will be a “SUPER STAR” and I’ll have his very wear ASAP because I already know….

    ^^^^^^^^
Jack: Who is so soft? What are you talking about?

    Is Anthony Nelson soft?
    Yaya Diaby soft?
    Shaq Barrett?

You must be talking about JTS, and if you watch the games and film, you’d know he’s playing tougher this year.

  9. Joe in Michigan Says:

If you’re talking about lack of sack production from the edge, I’d agree with you. Soft, no.

  10. Popcorn Mike Says:

I see that we gonna have a hell of a defense this year we stay healthy. If we can just put together a Brad Johnson lead offense type, we can win some ball games

  11. Big Red Says:

We could use a prime Khalil Back or Bosa brother lol.

  12. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Jack – if you are calling Shaq soft, you have issues.

  13. A Bucs Fan Says:

On the edge Shaq = love shaq but it’s obvious he is still recovering from Achilles and has not recovered all of his speed/explosion
JTS = All speed with little plan if he beats someone. He needs to continue to work on finishing sacks (he whiffed this past weekend.)
Anthony Nelson = should ne the full time starter and doesn’t get enough playing time. Great explosion and consistent rusher. Could improve his speed to power and counters but he doesn’t get enough snaps.
Yaya Diaby = Raw rookie who is ALL power and has little technique at this point.
Cam Gil : Unless it’s a long developing pass play he is an average pass rusher.
    Markees Watts : unknown

Bucs would benefit from someone stepping up their game off the edge. Or adding to it.

  14. JimBobBuc Says:

Kancey was visible in pass plays for sure, but I wonder how he did against the run. Has anybody looked at him on run plays???

  15. Popcorn Mike Says:

757 buc’em I agree with you on a few things. I am worried that Atlanta could beat us the way that we have playing. Also I like Bowles, he seems to have put together a hell of a defense but , I think if he don’t right the ship and at least make this team look decent, he want be around to see these young players star

  16. Buccos Says:

The defense is ferocious and healthy but the offense is not good. Well below average. Signing a stud running back would really help. Or trading an extra lineman or draft pick for a better tight end. What we have now ain’t gonna cut it

  17. Duane in Sanford Says:

Kancey twisting and stunting creates mismatches. When the defense gets used to playing with him, you can expect 54 and 45 blitzing through the voids he vacates. He will also create 1v1’s for the rest of the rush. He should make those around him better. Early work in progress, but another guy that can contribute to this team as a whole, and with upside.

  18. garro Says:

Yup! Once teams realize that he and Vea both must be accounted for when they are both in the game…Look out!

    Go Bucs!

  19. dmatt Says:

Let’s go get Frank Clark! We need nastiness at DE, JTS is not the answer. He’s a fluke, one n done. I’m willing to give Markee Watts a try. He’s hungry n does not play soft n passive. He’ll bring to the defensive line what Izien brought to the secondary. Let’s get back to being a tough defense that’s respected by Offensive Coordinators.

    —————————–

Then you don’t remember because Dlinemen usually play 66% or less of all snaps. This includes Sapp and Rice. LBs and DBs usually play 100% of snaps. The fact that you don’t know that either is a reflection of either your memory or your intelligence.

Damn, wake up on the wrong side of the bed Brandon? You’d think he said something about your mom with that reply. Lighten up Francis.
