Formula 44 For Dave Canales, Baker Mayfield

October 6th, 2023

Offensive coordinator Dave Canales.

The data nerds see a clear structure for the offense of new Bucs playcaller Dave Canales, and a 13-year NFL quarterback is paying attention.

Longtime backup QB Chase Daniel, a guy admired by Canales, is part of the In The Pocket show at TheAthletic.com.

Daniel watched every snap of the Bucs-Saints game Sunday and sat down to share various opinions.

He is impressed and surprised by the Bucs. He also was bored by the offense but confessed to appreciating how well it was run.

Daniels noted Mayfield “not making stupid mistakes” is key and Daniel added that Mayfield hasn’t done those things that lose games for nearly the entire season. Also, Daniel was highly impressed by Mayfield in the Bucs’ two-minute offense before halftime and he can tell Mayfield likes the playcalls and the guy calling them.

“He’s just running the offense,” Daniel said, likening the Bucs offense to the Saints offense when Daniel was Drew Brees’ backup.

Co-host Robert Mays talked about how the Bucs go very heavy on play-action and “heavy” personnel.

The Bucs use play-action in 44 percent of early down dropbacks, per Mays, and only Seattle (surprise?) does it more often. Mays added that the Bucs also have used multiple tight ends on 44 percent of all early-down plays, a huge number.

“You could actually see it getting really frustrating for Cam Jordan; like he was pissed,” Daniel said.

“He was like, ‘Man, all these nakeds and bootlegs and then you’re chipping me.’ That’s exactly what you want as an offensive coordinator, is you want to piss off the D-linemen, ‘Like, oh, we can’t even get home.’ Whether it’s quick-game or play-action shots.”

Daniel said the Bucs’ usage of play-action and personell is a good recipe for success while Mayfield gets a deeper understanding of the offense.

Play-action hurts pass-rush moves, Daniel explained, and offensive linemen love it because it makes them feel protected by the offensive coordinator.

Last year we had very little playaction from Lefty and I love seeing it this year.

We don’t run any? RPO’s and Philly had done a good job with them and their running stats might support the idea of us running RPO’s.

Keep up the play action and maybe we can really get the TE’s involved in some of the boot actions.

  2. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Seems like Dave Canales and Todd Bowles is a good recipe for success. Now if we can only get a descent RB to become more dangerous on offense.

  3. A Bucs Fan Says:

This offense ain’t nothing yet. I think we are just scratching the surface.

So refreshing to see a coach who is humble, constantly self-scouts, adapts, and actually puts players in position to be successful.

Hope he continues on this trend and the Bucs hold on to him for a while

    LONG LIVE KING CANALES!!

  5. sdm5821 Says:

In the ‘instant gratification’ society we live in it is hard to be patient. We have to remember that the starting o-line played little together during the preseason, same for White. Throw in an entirely new offense, QB, play caller, etc. and there’s bound to be growing pains. The Bucs are getting there as evidenced by the noticeable improvements each week.

  6. SufferingSince76 Says:

Anything that pisses off Cam Jordan is just fine with me.

We are going to beat the Lions solely on the fact DC has the bye week to implement plays/formations that the Lions haven’t seen yet. the whole NFL only has 4 games of tape so far.

Great observation. You nailed in one sentence what I’ve been preaching in far too many paragraphs.

Is anyone else here old enough to remember the old TV series “Kung Fu”?

    “Patience Grasshopper.”

“Also, Daniel was highly impressed by Mayfield in the Bucs’ two-minute offense before halftime and he can tell Mayfield likes the playcalls and the guy calling them

How Daniel was impressed with BakerBaker in the last two minutes before the half. He threw a damn pick.

All these non sense BS about Dave C. and Baker. They haven’t accomplished nothing to write home about but to beat up on crap team and lose their butt to good team.

  12. Woodenman Says:

Thanks Dave for being so positive. You must have been with all the people that said the Bucs were going to suck. What a idiot you are.

  13. Pewter Power Says:

I bet I’d baker continued of this same exact trajectory and has Brady like numbers he still wouldn’t make the pro bowl. There would be too many people who had to admit they made a mistake about the Bucs. 100% Winfield and Wirfs are going. Ya know just once I would like to see a Bucs running back in the pro bowl

  14. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Canales is a dude. He abides.

Cam Jordan is not a dude. He does not abide.

  15. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

    Fantastic.

  16. Crickett Baker Says:

The pundits are making up their win rate on their predictions by recently admitting that they were wrong about the Bucs. We shall see. GO BUCS!

Well stated and I totally agree.

Formula 44 For Dave Canales, Baker Mayfield ; “He’s just running the offense,” Daniel said, likening the Bucs offense to the Saints offense when Daniel was Drew Brees’ backup.

I don’t HATE anything. Hate is not good. However I sure dislike the Aint’s.

I’ve said from early on that the Bucs may have found their version of Drew Brees.

If Baker Mayfield can ( I believe he will ) have a similar career, Bucs fans lament may soon cease.

    1. First class GM and front office.
    2. Excellent Head Coach with a brilliant defensive mind that is able to coach old
school physical football to young contemporary players.
    3. A young and on the rise Offensive Coordinator that has been well schooled and
    has true coaching ability.
    4. Great scouting.
    5. A slowly improving salary cap situation.
    6. An abundance of young talent.
    7. An abundance of veteran talent.
    8. A bright enough future to hopefully get some of the veterans to realize their
opportunities and play for a home town discount.
    9. A fresh start this year with no excess baggage.
    10. The opportunity for a ground up constructed team and coaching staff to
succeed without the need to import “The Spark”.

Those are the facts. If the above facts aren’t enough reason for optimism, I don’t know what is.

After 47 years as a Bucs fan this is the best situation I have seen for a stable franchise future.

Congratulations to the Glazers. Don’t mess it up.

    Haters can take a hike.

  19. Jmarkbuc Says:

Hard not to like Canales so far. Baker is Baker, so as always the jury is out.

For the moment, David makes a fair point.

There does seem to be a plan, and an infusion of young talent, at least on D. That’s awesome and the Bucs are more fun to watch than I thought we would be.

Detroit in the creamsicles is HUGE.

For those that care about stats; In 2024 about 77million of dead cap money will be gone. Imagine the future prospects especially if we have (and I expect we will) a very successful year in 2023.

  23. Citrus County Says:

Just maybe, for the next 7 or 8 years the eyes of the very biased NFL media will have no choice but to focus on Tampa as all things NFC will have to go through us.

  24. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Citrus County

    Well said.

  25. Mark hardt Says:

Baker does not get enough credit for making good things happen when the play breaks down. Not just scrambling but dodging sacks, throwing on the run and flipping the ball forward.

  26. Citrus County Says:

Quite possibly at the marriage ceremony of Canales/ Mayfield, Baker was barefoot.

  27. Jack Clark Says:

Our OC still needs to fix our run blocking, everything else is fine. He’s doing a good job so far but he is not complete

  28. Baking with Canales Says:

    Citrus NAILED It!

God knows how many punts we avoided thanks to Baker.

    LFG!!!!

  29. Usfbuc Says:

So far so good, excited to see how we look coming out of the bye. We only have two games left where we are heavy underdogs.

  30. Shane Callahan Says:

I’m really digging Canales, but I’m afraid Tampa and Baker will only have him for this year because some sad team is going to hire him as a head coach SOON. That’s just the way it is, but it stinks because Canales/Mayfield could win a few Super Bowls together. (I’m not saying they won it this year. Those two dudes are doing their best so far to hide the fact that the middle part of their O-line is HORRIBLE, and it is this team’s only Achilles heal.)

  31. David Says:

Well, Baker fans enjoy it while it lasts, because it won’t. There is a real good reason why Baker is on his fourth team in six years. We know what we have in Baker but we do not know what we will have with
Dave C. I hope he makes it and continue as a head coach somewhere else. He is already 0-1 against a good team defense. We will know more about him in next 4 weeks.

  32. Don’t tell me it’s raining Says:

Hello Hateorator, hope you’re having a good night 🙂

  33. Citrus County Says:

Oh come folks, Dave Canales is not intellectually challenged nor is he a fool. In my opinion he has a innate ability ( and possibly tutored ) to know when he is ready to make a move up. He won’t be ready for a head coaching position for a while. And then, I don’t believe he would make a move unless it was the perfect scenario. He is from the Pete Carroll tree and Mr. Carroll hopefully taught him much about the move to the NFL. He needs to look no further than Raheem Morris.

Boy do I hope I’m right on this call !

  34. Old School Bucs Says:

I get the feeling this town is heading for a massive disappointment. This team isnt as good as y’all think they are. Mayfield is not the key to victory. The Oline and the defense is!! This team will only go as far as the Oline blacks and the defense doesnt give up big plays. The Lions are no joke!!!!!!

  35. stpetebucfan Says:

    Citrus County

How long have you been with us here at JBF? I’ve read a lot of your posts lately and they are always well thought out. I’m enjoying them!

And I agree with the others that your 5:28PM post was spot on.

  36. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

And Citrus County – there is another shiny Lombardi Trophy at OBP!

  37. Obvious Says:

Citrus, the last sentence is the correct one.

Shane, I’m sorry to say that of All the years Licht has been the GM, this 1, single, uno year contract for an OC of a pro team, is the biggest and most BONEHEADED move he’s EVER made! What the HE!! was he thinking!??

Besides, that’s a HUGE insult to Todd Bowles! I’m not saying I supported Bowles very much back then (FOR GOOD REASON) but a one year contract for an OC??? Clearly Canales was desperate for the job THEN to have excepted it but I’m hoping he has amnesia and forgets to give us the finger at the end of the year. Rather, I’m hoping he appreciates the opportunity and decides to except a small contract BECAUSE THAT’S ALL HE MAYBE WILLING TO SIGN UP FOR SINCE “AS SOON AS HE’S READY”, HE’S THE NEXT HEAD COACH FOR PROBABLY HIS CHOICE OF 5 DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS! He probably realizes he needs more seasoning to run the “whole show”, Offense and Defense.

But since Mayfield is coming back from the dead JUST LIKE Geno Smith, everybody KNOWS that the common denominator is CANALES.. He WILL get the offer from someone GUARANTEED!…..!…..!!!

In other words, enjoy it while it last… A one year contract for OC….. JUST STUPID!!

  38. Citrus County Says:

St.Pete. I dabbled at making a very few short comments earlier in the spring under a different name but wasn’t that interested and didn’t get hooked. I’ve followed JBF since they have been around. I have no interest in social media at all and don’t do any form of it aside from this. Writing has always been a strong suit for me and but for a few exceptions have never really put it to use. Following JBF and reading the comments made by many left me shaking my head. I have been nursing a bum knee for a short while and that has kept me from my main pastime, riding my Harley. I woke up one day and said to myself “See if you can make a good contribution.” I almost gave up early on because of …..some of the posters. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Here’s a trivia question for you St.Pete. Do you remember Gary Moore and Durward Kirby ? If you do then you are an old fart.

  39. WyomingJoe Says:

@David: You’re always so “upbeat” about Baker. Apparently the medication your psychiatrist is prescribing isn’t working. However, it seems the more crap you spew about Baker the better he plays. So please, keep your rants going…

Cam Jordan is not a dude. He does not abide.

Well Big Mouth Cam will be in the Hall of Fame one day, and some of his resume has been as a massive problem for the Bucs twice a year over the last decade.

I have not liked him at all, he very mouthy.
But with that said, as aplayer I give him much respect, he will be wearing a Yellow HOF Jacket one day, just like Mike Evans will.

Lets see, this vaunted O line you mentioned is leading the worst rushing attack in the NFL, for the 2nd year in a row.

Bakers ability to move, and being the best in the NFL currently on 3rd down, and one of the highest percentages under pressure.

One big difference is Baker is not what Brady became last year, a 45year old sitting duck, with the worst rushing attack in the League.
Like it or not, Baker has been a difference maker.

  44. garro Says:

A lot of wisdom there from Daniels. Nothing wrong with what Canales is doing. Love the play action game on Sunday. We have some guys who can help us in 12 personel and I am beginning to think Canales may have some tricks up his sleave with that.

    Go Bucs!

  45. Citrus County Says:

I won’t name names but you were not at fault Hunter. The ones at fault need to be in the high chair drinking from their sippy cup.

  46. Citrus County Says:

Hunter; Spirited debate and even crossing swords occasionally can be fun. But when the lack of respect shows up…some of these folks can’t distinguish between sense of humor and insult. For instance ; I asked St.Pete. if he knew who Gary Moore and Durward Kirby were. He has openly said that he is75 and I am 72. I said to him that if he knew them then he is an old fart. That’s sense of humor and I don’t think he would have a problem with it because only someone our age would know that. So I don’t mind someone taking a shot at me with wit and have no problem laughing at my self. So, don’t put your crack pipe in your back pocket or you might crush it when you sit down. I got ticked because someone didn’t like my comment, called me a homer and said I should be in a nursing home. In a different context I would have laughed and agreed but it was intended to be an insult. I can dish it out and I can take it. I won’t be disrespectful.

  47. Citrus County Says:

We are all anonymous here and go by a handle. So none of us know the other person or their situation unless they choose to reveal. Everyone should be treated with the same respect because we are all equals. I have seen some comments that were way out of bounds. Imagine making a snide remark like ” What are you, blind?” and the person that you don’t even know lost their eyesite last week.

  48. Citrus County Says:

Dagummit, now I’m on a roll. What really ticked me off was seeing all these random letters at the end of posts. Some of them were easily decoded but I had to resort to the urban dictionary for others. What I found was absolute vulgarity. Had someone said that to my face they certainly would have come to regret it. People that hide behind anonymity to be that disrespectful are slimy cowards.

  49. Citrus County Says:

Oh man now I’m in neck deep. In no way do I mean to come across as sanctimonious or holier than thou. I certainly don’t mean to lecture or preach. But if someone doesn’t like what I have to say and gets wisea** and signs off with SMD. It really ticks me off as I’m sure it does to many other folks here. There really is no place for that among decent people.

  50. bob in valrico Says:

Well said Citrus, and if you can reach only one I would call it a success. Born in
’51 myself and lucky enough to have witnessed some of the greatest NFL players
of all time. Lots of great memories stored, which may or may not be be why I sometimes
can’t remember why I went in the garage.

  51. DoooshLaRue Says:

I know it’s early but every time I see Canales on the sideline I can’t help but think he looks like a HC.
He’s poised, confident but not cocky and he adjusts to the game in real time….. and he never sweats!

Bowles is very lucky to have him and they seem to complement each other.

I was really excited for this season and am pleasantly surprised!

Yes I am the old fart here so I remember Derwood Kirby and Gary Moore and his bowtie.

    Hope your bum knee heals.

  53. President Canales Says:

This guy is the real deal, (Canales).
You need buy in and results. Canales got the first part through his infectious
Personality and teaching method. The system is the system with adjustments you should get results. Is he HC material? … maybe. Could be a young Pete Carrol. Same type of positive approach. Not a bad comp, IMO.

  54. orlbucfan Says:

Really enjoyed your Bucs analysis Citrus County. Been a devoted Bucs fan for 44 years so I’m no youngster. BTW, been on the back of Harleys and BMWs, and have seen hundreds of miles of scenery that would put heaven to shame if I was a believer. Rest that knee! Go Bucs!!

  55. Cobraboy Says:

Hey, Citrus, another old fart* here, I’m moving to Citrus County from the DR soon, and even have a Moto Guzzi V85TT on order! I’ve run a motorcycle tour company here for 15 years!

*71 going on 18, maybe I’ll grow up some day…but prolly not.

  56. Citrus County Says:

orlbucfan; After staying up way too late, I took a short ride this morning to test the knee. We’re back baby. All the while riding through the Goethe Forest I couldn’t stop thinking about the JBF blog (or whatever this is called). I am very surprised and flattered by the nice remarks directed my way. Thank You all ! What started out as a lark and the opportunity for me to speculate about the bizarre events last year has rapidly evolved into something entirely different. I am enjoying this. Last year is now last year. Time to move on. If you believe in heaven…..you believe in something.

I now must figure out a way to be involved and follow the many of you I’ve grown to enjoy. This takes a lot of time to follow all the threads and I don’t want to sit on my derriere all day or all night in front of the computer. But I will figure it out, just like I’ll someday figure out what really happened last year.

St. Pete. My good friend in Ocala that served on the same Navy flight crew over 50 years ago loves all the old stuff. He sent me a link to the Gary Moore show and I began to wonder what happened to Durwood Kirby. So I thought to G….. him and find out. I didn’t know if his name was spelled Dur or Der or Dir but as it turns out his name was Durward but the world seemed to know him as Du-De-Di- wood Kirby.
I always liked the guy. He passed in 2000.

Close to everything but far enough away for some peace and calm.

  66. Citrus County Says:

President Canales. Perhaps the wisdom of our now seasoned GM shows. He seems to be making a lot of good decisions. He is definitely the man in charge and running the show. He came in with Lovie, that didn’t work. Then he had to find another coach and the safest choice was Koetter. Then the Kangol Hat arrived with his big personality and his resume and no doubt wielded his authority and his way. Jason Licht is now a much wiser man and has a clean sheet of paper. I am confident in him and have great expectations that are realistic for the first time.
