Falcons Lose, Now Share NFC South Lead With Saints

October 29th, 2023

What an eventful day in the NFC South!

The Falcons fell to 4-4 after they benched Desmond Ridder midway throug their loss to the Titans, a coming out party for Tennessee rookie QB Will Levis. Damn, Levis was special with four touchdown passes in a 28-23 win. Falcons receiver Van Jefferson dropped a sure first-down throw on Atlanta’s game-losing final drive.

Funny how a rookie QB can light up the Falcons and the Bucs were stuck in the mud against them last week.

So Atlanta’s loss was matched by a victorious slimy Saints (4-4) in Indianapolis. The Colts’ ran the ball down the Saints’ throat but the Indianapolis defense was heinous in the 38-27 New Orleans win. The Saints racked up for than 500 yards of offense.

The Bucs sit at 3-4, a half game behind both teams.

Up next for Tampa Bay is the Texans. Houston (3-4) lost to then-winless Carolina this afternoon in Charlotte.

If the Bucs can’t beat the Texans …

Not really Joe. Can’t do legit comparisons if you are not noting huge differences

The Rookie Qb was playing on a team that has a running game. You have to be concerned only defending the Pass with the Bucs

  3. unbelievable Says:

    Congratulations Tampa Bay!

You managed to lose 3 games straight and drop from 1st to 3rd place in the weakest, most pathetic division in football.

Well done Coach Bowles, Dave Canales, and the entire team!

  4. Bubby Says:

3rd place in the nfc south! Unreal.

  5. MegaFailure Says:

    Put in Trask, Baker sucks

  6. Rod Munch Says:

Big news was that Panthers won, meaning the Bucs are only 2 games in front of them – and still have to play them twice. Plus the Panthers don’t even have their first rounders, so they have no reason to try to tank. So that means the #1 pick is still in play!

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

I do not have confidence in my Bucs after they came out at home and lost against an average Falcons team. And Quess what? The Texans will be no pushover for them. It is a 50-50 game.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

I have no idea what the Texans were doing. They had been playing a high flying passing first offense, were an exciting team to watch, but apparently over their bye they called Bowles for advice, and came out vs the Panthers and decided they would establish the run – and ran it more than they passed, and promptly lost to the worst team in football.

But not to worry, next week vs the Bucs I’m sure they’ll realize what a stupid gameplan that was and revert back to their pass first offense and put up 17 points, which will be 14 more than Mayfield gets the Bucs.

  9. Buc4evr Says:

The Bucs are going to be in last place soon. This team is absolutely pathetic. Almost every position needs an upgrade. After the next debacle against the 49ers we can start the Bowles countdown.

  10. Dlavid Says:

Falcons are for real now with the QB switch ! They will win the division ,…… time to tank Bucs ! We have zero chance at playoffs officially now !

  11. Rod Munch Says:

Buc4evr – what are you talking about?

Bucs beat the Vikings, the Vikings beat the 49ers, so that means the Bucs will beat the 49ers! Duh!

That’s the logic the Mayfield fanbois used to tell me that the Bucs are better than the Dolphins – because the Bucs lost by less to the Bills than the Dolphins, so that means the Bucs > Dolphins and Mayfield > Tua.

  12. Since76 Says:

Let’s ride Mayfield all the way to the #1 pick. Don’t mess with the roster.

  13. Bosch Says:

I hope R White is watching the Bengals – 49ers game. Mix on and McCaferty are putting on a clinic about how it hit a hole.

  14. Faspro Says:

The way the Bucs are playing they’re right where they belong; at the bottom of the worst division in the league…

  15. Darin Says:

Yeah and they couldn’t slow down John Ritter either. The bucs are not a well coached team and never

  16. Darin Says:

    Will be under bowles

  17. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs offense is now down to averaging 16.2 points per game.

In the first 4 the offense averaged 19.25 points per game.
In the last 3 the offense averaged 12.33 points per game.

But who cares about that nonsense when the Bucs are dominating in the most important category in football – the Bucs are +8 in turnovers!

As we all know, Bowles wanted a QB who would protect the football first and foremost, and that’s what he’s got! The nimrods who focus on things like points and outscoring opponents, they don’t understand the game.

Stop daydreaming . you’ll make the kids cry when their hopes are dashed

Bucs are not getting a one or even a two. Theres a wonderful article on Bleacher Reports why purposeful tanking is not a thing in the NFL with teams with superstar and above average players.

    A) good players are by nature competitive. They won’t lie down to tank

    B) Stats are tied to future pay days and asking a player to put a dink in their future pay is a non-starter

    C) Stats are tied to legacy

To illustrate for those who can’t get it through their noggin an Example –

want to tell Evans he must participate in total tanking to the point where he doesn’t get a thousand yards this season? Multiply that by all the players who have contracts coming up in a year or two. Gee guys tank so we can do better and you can get paid less in a few years

And why the heck is Bowles going to purposefully tank? Only if he gets what you guys don’t want him to get

a promise of additional years with the team.

This is why teams and players don’t even listen to fans. Every year Fans advocate for what teams have known for decades is a nonstarter

The only stupid narrative after that reality sets in is that the Bucs are going to lose ALL games they should win going forward. I’ll leave the silly people to their silliness on that.

Theres only one way to be in control of tanking – have no good players – or trade them all away.

  19. DBS Says:

What we will get all week now? The Texans will be ready and angry because they lost this week. You know how the story goes. Just like last week and the Bill’s.

Let’s ride Mayfield all the way to the #1 pick. Don’t mess with the roster.

    ———

That’s the problem, he’s not bad enough to get the #1 pick.

The Bucs will end up with probably 6 wins, and that means they’ll be around the #9 pick, which means you’re not getting one of the top QBs, but other top talent falls, so you’re getting someone who isn’t a QB, and you still don’t have a QB, and you don’t want to spend big money on a new QB – all of which means you’re just resigning Baker once again, who will once again go 6-11.

Sticking with Baker is literally the worst option possible. Again, I don’t have any real faith in Trask, I doubt he’s better than Mayfield, but at least there is hope – and if he stinks, then yes, you have a legit shot at a #1 pick. With Mayfield, you get the worst of all worlds. A completely boring awful offense that isn’t actually bad enough to get you someone else.

Well, yes, I was being over the top there. I don’t actually believe the Bucs can be bad enough to get the #1 pick.

I was trying to be hopeful, and pretend this isn’t a completely wasted season, that something good could come out of it.

  24. Lakeland Says:

I’m still confused. I thought for sure the BUCS was going to draft Will Levis. But they went for the DT instead. I’m still shaking my head on that one…

  25. Tony Marks Says:

For those whose names I recognize as mostly Traskies

    Who you foolin?

NO one cares about the seeding in week 8. Results to day mean the division is winnable and all the whining and the season over crapola being pushed was just that.

The real unspoken angst by the Traskies at least is – well a certain personnel change is less likely to happen now. Still could but much more likely its been
    postponed yet again.

  26. UKBuccaneer Says:

If you want to tank for a pick, you’re not a fan of the team, and you’re also not that smart. It’s a hit-and-miss tactic, at best.

  28. Pelsbuc61 Says:

JBF, there’s no need to look at the standings when you realize how hopeless this franchise is with these coaches, players and front office. More evidence it was all Brady that gave us relevance for 3 yrs, despite Bowles efforts to destroy whatever good culture was created.

The Titans have a running game….that’s how.

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

And, we need to take care of business the next two weeks……stop hoping other teams lose and do some winning.

  31. rfdes Says:

    Wow… How exciting is that!

  32. Rod Munch Says:

UKBuccaneer – When I was younger, I would live and die by the Bucs winning or losing each week, the idea of not being all in every season would have made me furious. But after watching them since I was a kid in the 80s, and seeing the two SB runs, how those teams were built, and also seeing the teams that were endlessly non-competitive year after year, well, I’m not a fan of wasting 5 years of the future in order to try to be slightly better now, when you have a team that has no chance of going anywhere.

I know I’m generally a prick to people here (because they deserve it, to be sure), but in this case, I’m just thinking perhaps you haven’t been through these long term win/loss cycles, that can take over a decade. To me, this team won a SB, and went all in to get run it back, and now we’re needing to pay for that SB. But without a QB, this team doesn’t have a chance – no team in the modern NFL does. While the defense is absolutely good enough to be a playoff team, the offense is equally horrible, and the headcoach is terrible, etc.

Anywho, to some degree I wish I had your passion still – but it is nice not to have my week ruined because Todd Bowles is a moron who punts at the end of a half instead of trying a FG because he’s more worried about what can go wrong than trying to score points and win a game.

  33. rfdes Says:

If the Bucs can’t beat the Texans …

Yep and if we don’t I’m sure Joe will find some lame positive statistic which will spin some hope for the following weeks debacle. Sorry for the pessimism.

  34. adam from ny Says:

    new conclusion:

i don’t think we make a trade b4 the deadline unless someone is tossed into our lap at a giveaway price…

    why:

we were clearly forewarned by gm that this is a post-brady cap recovery season, and we were paying the price this year for overextending ourselves…

so there’s really no pressure for mgmt to make a move or multiple moves…it’s a see what we have left type year, and the worse we do the higher our draft picks become…

so it’s pretty simple…we went into the season knowing it’s an average at best year, but let’s not totally embarrass ourselves and wipe out the culture that’s been built here the past 5 or so years…they will do that — but in the end we should really expect no upgrades until things are sorted thru after the season…

heck they didn’t even extend our future gold jacket receiver…

they’re playing it very close to the vest in order to bounce back moving forward post tommy b…

    it’s a logical process…

and baker is just a momentary plug and play dude – who gets to stay if he somehow knocks everyones socks off…good luck with that baker

    ———

Fun fact: The Buccaneers have never won a game in Houston – be it vs the Oilers or Texans.

Just last week’s fun fact was that the Buccaneers had never won a game in Buffalo, despite the fact the Bucs all-time best winning percentage vs any team was vs the Bills.

Its not as much a shock or surprise but a little tinge of unexpected.

and thats just me as a fan watching. If you are defensive coordinator you have to key in on the run and the pass with your schemes – with the bucs you can put the emphasis on the pass.

Meanwhile the Giants went all-in with the run – and lost. And the Texans, for some dumb reason, decided to ‘establish’ the run this week, and lost to the previously winless Panthers.

It’s 2023, you don’t need to run the ball. You ‘run’ the ball through the air, with screens, slants, flare passes, etc.

Also The Bucs just averaged 4.6 yards per carry vs the Bills, running the football wasn’t the issue. Mayfield missing wide open guys and running the clock down to 1 second on every play, was.

  40. JK Says:

Baker Mayfield had a passer rating of 94.0 with 467 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception in 2 games in the 2020 playoffs.
    At Pittsburgh
At KC, which they should have won if the D could have contained Chad Henne
Of course, that was a much better team than this TB squad

  44. Rod Munch Says:

This is just such an utterly vacant take its hard to even know where to start.
Maybe illustration would be best for others to see the silliness of the claim

3rd and goal on the 1. Which is mor sure? a good running team punching it in or going to a

screens, slants, flare passes, etc. etc rhrough the air?

TO be clear I am not asking Rod. The fact he actually typed that out for the public to read indicates he might be past help. Its for others to read

Anyone who says throwing it through the air is more sure than grasping in two hands and advancing it on the ground if you are good at it – needs help I can’t assist with digitally

    B) Rod Clearly thinks running is just an equal alternative to advance the ball. Its not. Thats a naive to Football understanding. Its about the defensive schemes and kind of reactions the players have to take that are physically different from the other . Running is different to defend against than passing ( the things you have to explain to Traskies).

I don’t know how In Gods name anyone can claim to watch football and miss this. The most apparent example is when its a punch in play on the half yard line and the defense knows its run. The emphasis of the scheme is to make sure the defenders positions and posture are maximized to stop the run.

IF that were not enough there are particular plays you run to fool the offense WHICH WLL FOOL NO ONE IF YOU HAVE NO RUNNING GAME.

Its called play action Rod – Look it up.

  47. WyomingJoe Says:

Muncher: I don’t know whether you’re simply doltish (that means stupid Ronny) or just incredibly tedious (that means boring). Sorry, I really haven’t formed an opinion about you yet because, well, I don’t really care about pricks.

  48. Popcorn Mike Says:

That’s what’s so frustrating with the Bucs so far this season. There’s only 1or 2 NFC teams that are dominating as of now, Philly and the Cowboys are a distant behind but I think they have the next best record in the nfc with the 49ers struggling Yet the Bucs can’t take advantage of this with the team they have. Not a great team but very decent if they can just stop beating themselves It’s so bad that I have doubts that they can beat the Texans. The Texans have a rookie QB a first HC and staff yet, they have the same record as the Bucs

  49. It's Corn Says:

Bowles and maybe Canales have it drilled into Mayfield’s head not to throw interceptions. Which is why he is always second guessing and holding the ball instead of letting it fly. Zero risk-its, zero biscuits.

They fired Leftwich and replaced him with Dave. Tood Bowles was not letting Byron Leftwich make decisions and he is not letting Dave C. Make decisions. Mush don’t even try the old move the goal post maneuver to save face routine. Thats another instant flop by you. You lined up your point followed through with your kick and missed like Charlie Brown and fell on your back

No one EVER made any claim of “Primarily” running game. You can go on a laptop and theres this neat little feature to find words on a page. Show the class where before you tried your goal post move where anyone used the word primary or made even close to such a claim.

Instead they will see you dispute that the running game helps the passing game and your goof of a statement that you don’t need a running game period. Don’t go for the double dismount to add dishonesty to incompetence. You can’t do anything about the second but the first is your choice.

with this latest demonstration of silliness you have ZERO credibility related to the NFL and anyone that wants to believe you on ANYTHING football related including your lololol repeated and equally nonsense claim there are wide open receivers on every play with baker

are welcome to put on their matching tin foil hats. You all should even have them monogrammed – KT

    ———

and the simpler truth is you are full nonsense because having a running game as all contending teams have does NOT equal the NFL is not a passing league.

its an utterly false narrative and shows you don’t understand football which is precisely why your analysis of whats wrong with the team is equally – nonsense..

having a running game says nothing about being primarily a running team – its merely a good and necessary component.

TO the surprise of no one rational – Todd Bowles understands Football more than Traskites ever will.

When Trask gets to play is in his hands and whining non stop in every thread whether its Qb related or not is doing nothing to change that.

  73. Jack Clark Says:

Anyways, I blame the offensive line

  74. Rod Munch Says:

    Tony Marks Says:
No one EVER made any claim of “Primarily” running game.

    ———–

Well, then we agree. When I say you should pass through the air, that doesn’t mean on literally every single play. It means when the run isn’t working, use the short passing game to open things up.

Saying you MUST run the ball is a facility. What you MUST do is score more points than your opponent, and whatever way works, is what you should do. This was literally built as a passing team – that’s why we have an offensive line that is better at passing than running, that’s why we have a lead running back that is better at receiving than running, that’s what we have two elite WRs. A good coach looks at their roster, looks at their strengths and weaknesses, and designs plays that accentuate their talent.

Then, you have Todd Bowles, who just repeats what he read in his 1970 edition of the Coaches Handbook, that says you win by running the ball and playing good defense.

But it’s 2023, it’s a passing league, and you need to score points – you’re not winning many games with an offense averaging 16 points.

  75. Tony Marks Says:

NO Rod we don’t agree because you don’s understand BASIC football. Simply saying – score more points is trite and meaningless

It ignores theres a defense on the other side of the field . OF course Thats why your other nonsense is essentially to claim that there is no defense and as you have stated multiple times Theres wide open players on EVERY play

It doesn’t matter if its shown that teams are double teaming and taking out Evans, even mugging him – we are supposed to believe traskies instead. To try and fudge that receivers are open on EVERY player ( or even most) what the Traski does is show a single miss or like in the case of the palmer throws a few weeks back show the ball coming down out of the reach of the player WITHOUT REFERENCE to the receiver ‘s route running

Newsflash! as anyone who has done any shooting knows – you aim where the moving target is supposed to be based on the expected speed. When Palmer turns too early to look for the ball he loses a step… what was the so called “miss” length – the same step.

Unfortunately one Traskie gave it away giving too much details _ “I watched the whole game in all 22 and Baker missed 4 throws” –

Well hot doggie dog! 4 misses ( which included the Palmer throws referenced above which are clearly partially timing and route running issues) the whole game eh? lolololol. when you subtract the route running issues you have two or three – welcome to non Brady land

the second thing neophytes do when watching all 22s is look only downfield at the receiver core . They see an open player and voila! the ball doesn’t get to that open receiver – and the traskite neophyte that always was going to the all 22s just to find what they wanted to find gurgles with glee -see Baker missed an open player

it doesn’t matter that the pocket is collapsing or even that baker is avoiding a sack. It doesn’t even matter if the receiver is in such a position where the ball would have to be rainbowed between two players and give one fo the defenders time to get over and even make a pick _ the dude is open man!

That why non of you could play QB. the joes posted about the take of an ACTUAL QB expert – Gannon and he said its inexcusable Evans was not involved more – but blames Canales not Baker because he said that Canales allowed Evans to be taken out of the game by the defending coordinator and didn’t adjust

Down the drain the Traskies narrative. YOU have no credibility accept among traskies mate. You blew it with your earlier nonsense even though. You are trying desperately to walk it back because it was so silly. I was VERY clear what I was referring to and you were very clear in disputing what I was saying

Goal post move still – Denied. 🙂

    regarding quarterback change:

i personally don’t see a reason at this point, at all, to be pulling your starting quarterback for trask…

now if we go to houston and don’t really compete and put up points…then we come home and get drubbed by tennessee at ray jay for i think what would be a 4th consecutive home loss…then sh!t will completely hit the fan around here..and we will be 3-6…

at that point the qb switch talk should become real talk…

at that point we go into san fran…and i think you keep baker as the starter…

now if we get our azzes handed to us over there, then at 3-7 with an easier game on tap, you make the change to trask…

but we’ve gotta drop the next 3 and fall to 3-7 before they swap out qb’s…this of course is just my humble opinion…

also at this point if they switch to trask, you don’t yoyo back and forth between the 2 qb’s at any point…you roll with trask for the final 7 games no matter what, barring injury

JOE: “Damn, Levis was special with four touchdown passes in a 28-23 win.”

Damn, Joe, that can’t be. Just last week Levis was a lousy backup who couldn’t beat out Desmond Ridder for the starting job. Right?

^ “couldn’t beat out Titans starter” lol
