Early Scores Critical For Bucs

October 14th, 2023

Need to score quickly.

In recent press conferences and media appearances, Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales has been pretty clear about one thing.

That one thing would be, we haven’t seen the full new Bucs offense. It’s soon to click, Canales said. It just takes time.

While there is recent historical evidence to suggest Canales is on the mark, his ballclub can’t wait much longer if the Bucs hope to continue to win. Take tomorrow’s game with the Lions.

The Bucs, to date, have yet to score a touchdown in the first quarter this season. In fact, the Bucs haven’t scored at all in the opening quarter since the win over the Bears.

Meanwhile, the Lions have no such issues scoring fast. Rich Hribar of Sharp Football Analysis documents how the Lions wait for no opponent to score.

Detroit has outscored opponents 45-10 in the first quarter this season and 89-37 in the first half, the largest differentials in the league.

The Lions average nine points in the opening quarter. The Bucs? Try half a field goal in the first quarter (1.5 points).

Unless the Bucs defense gets a rash of turnovers tomorrow, the Bucs better figure out a way to get points in the first quarter or they may end up playing catchup the whole game.

Why such a poor offensive start to the games Coach? Whatever we’re doing isn’t working!

Maybe we’re conservative on offense, letting Coach Bowles’s miracle defense create turnovers like in the Vikings game? Maybe we are establishing our great ground game, running it down the throats of defenses to the tune of 2-3 yds/carry? Maybe we’re following our game plan to make sure we don’t turn over the ball early in the game?

None of the above is working since we’re scoring 1.5 pts in the first qtr. Let’s play to win, not to lose. Let’s do something different and establish the passing game first, before the run. Let’s throw it to someone besides Evans and Godwin. Let’s plan on scoring 30+ points. Let’s be unpredictable!

Let’s prove the national press is wrong, that we should not be underdogs in this game, let’s prove everyone wrong!!!!

    Purple Rain, Purple Rain

I’m confident we will defeat the Lions tomorrow

    @Jack Clark

    No doubt brotha!

  7. Franklin Says:

Should have signed Drew Lock instead of Baker.

If the Bucs want to beat the Lions, they have to come out of their comfort zone and throw the football more. The run game has been inefficient and the Lions have one of the top run defenses in the NFL.

Maybe it’s time to go back to Kieft with some passes.
Excited to see that formation where Goedeke lines up next to Wirfs.
    Double Pass, Flea Flicker etc.
Time to pull out all the stops and play sound defense.
Pressure up the middle is what will make our OLBs look good.
We might be wondering why these guys haven’t been playing more at OLB after this game.

    Caleb is collapsing.
Penix and Nix looked good today.

  11. BillyBucco Says:

Caleb definitely showing what he looks like when pressured.
No QB is special when he doesn’t have time.
Problem is most bad teams have a bad O Line.
I saw a mock draft with is taking Spencer Rattler in the 2nd.
I feel like we NEED to take ONE because this class is the best in a while, but we really need a RB or TE, so how do we spend a 2nd on one?
Maybe a flyer in the 3rd or 4th but who knows.

  12. LUVMYBUCS Says:

While Drake Maye doesn’t appear extraordinary, Jayden Daniels shines.

  13. DoooshLaRue Says:

Yeah, Drake Maye does not impress me.

  14. Crickett Baker Says:

If Canales would change the style of his mustache and beard, then don a pirate hat he would be a dead ringer for Bucco Bruce as shown on the helmets.

  15. garro Says:

Ouch Joe…How dare you burst my bubble!

    1.5? That is crazy!

Ok Dave…time to get busy with that opening drive stuff!

    Go Bucs!

I hope Armstrong and Canales put their heads together, and come up with a trick play. Our ST is coming together, too. The right trick play would blow Motown outta the water. I still feel this will be a Cardiac Bucs win.
