BSPN: It’s Time For Bucs To Embrace Reality And Be Sellers Today

October 31st, 2023

BSPN: Bucs should be sellers.

The Bucs have no run game. The passing game is, well, certainly not good enough to make up for an inept running game.

The Bucs have several players that need to get paid this offseason. Some the Bucs need to keep. Weighing all of these factors and seeing how the Bucs need a franchise quarterback, follicly-challenged Billy Barnwell of BSPN basically wrote it’s time to face the sad reality and put Old Yeller down.

The Bucs need to be selling parts today and stock up on draft picks, Barnwell types.

Today, Halloween, is the NFL trade deadline. The clock strikes at 4 p.m. today.

It’s been a rough three weeks after the bye for Tampa Bay, which started the season 3-1 before losing three straight after its week off. Baker Mayfield ranks 26th in QBR over that three-game losing streak, with the 2018 No. 1 overall pick completing just 58.7% of his passes and averaging 5.9 yards per attempt.

The Bucs could hope [Baker Mayfield] improves or swap him out for Kyle Trask, but it might be more realistic to recognize that either player isn’t about to lead them to a Super Bowl. Tampa Bay could have a shot at competing for a division title if it turns things around, but it can’t run the ball and doesn’t have a great line. Mayfield can look fine when he gets the ball out quickly and isn’t stuck in obvious dropback situations, but I’m not sure this is a very good offensive line.

Barnwell further types that Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht needs to decide this morning which stud free agents (Mike Evans, Antoine Winfield, Lavonte David and/or Devin White) he plans to bring back and which ones he doesn’t.

The players he doesn’t plan to bring back Licht should ship out for draft picks.

Joe cannot argue with this logic, but dang, the team is only one game out of first place. Who knows when the next time the Bucs will be in this position again? Do people not remember the horrible playoff drought through during the Lost Decade?

Maybe Barnwell is right? Maybe the Bucs should stop talking themselves into believing they can make a Super Bowl run.

Still, Joe is sure this is not what Bucs coach Todd Bowles wants.

Leigh Roy said it best. Unless you can win the whole thing participation trophies don’t sell seats. Go Bucs!

    Can we trade Bowles?
Just listened to his press conference and I swear his answer of, “We talked about that” is getting OLD.
Well I’m glad you noticed Todd!!
What are you gonna do to FIX it?
If we don’t see a MAJOR improvement from the Pass Rush AND 3rd down defense, then Mr Bowles simply doesn’t KNOW how to fix it.
Why don’t you start by playing guys that actually give a Sh!t like Zyon and Dee?
Hell, neither CB should be playing right now IMO.
How can Dean spend countless hours in Todd’s (Sorry His) office and still not get it.
Probably because he is only using 90 of his 100 total brain cells.

At least Jax is FINALLY looking decent. Bucs are and always will be #1 in my book. And I survived the 1980s Culverhouse years (shudder).

BARNWELL: “The Bucs could hope Baker Mayfield improves or swap him out for Kyle Trask, but it might be more realistic to recognize that either player isn’t about to lead them to a Super Bowl.”

He can say that about Mayfield, who has plenty of film, but it is completely idiotic to say that about Trask, who has not taken a single snap with the starters in a regular season OR preseason game.

Of course, Barnwell says that about Trask – without any factual basis for doing so – because Barnwell is pushing the narrative dictated by the NFL, which is to change the look of the quarterback position.

  12. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Listen up occult of Trask members, IF TRASK WAS ANY GOOD THE BUCS WOULD NOT HAVE SIGNED JOURNEYMAN BAKER MAYFIELD IN THE FIRST PLACE.
They have had the dude for 3 years, the assessment has already been made.

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

“Couple of planes crashes and we’re in the playoffs”. John McKay.

  14. Since76 Says:

Baker is a known. His play here matches his history. Below par. Trask is an unknown. I like what I seen of him in preseason. He made vertical plays down the field. Don’t watch college so I didn’t see him play with Florida. Stick with Baker you get a high draft pick. Go with Trask you get the same or find a QB.thats your options in my opinion.

  15. Pewter Power Says:

That’s an odd things to write so close to the deadline

  16. Adam's Angry Says:

You sell today, you’re sending a message to the fans that the season is over. You’d rather take 2 steps back than 1 step forward. Do SOMETHING to get a running back who isn’t blind and runs like he’s in a crowded Publix. You literally need ONE player. That isn’t a huge investment.

  17. BillyBucco Says:

Also listened to Bucs Total Access with Ali Marpet talking to Luke Goedeke and it’s embarrassing to learn that Canales had ZERO answer to go to a silent count or change the cadence or Hard Counts or anything to disrupt the Bills from teeing off on the snap.
It’s something I haven’t really thought about when you see a jackass get 3 false starts.
They are saying the Bills had to have seen something on Film that allowed them to get off the ball so quick.
I’m sorry, but that sounds like amateur hour to me!!!!!

This- right here. The only people who think they need to ‘see him with the starters’ are fans. It’s painfully obvious he hasn’t shown the coaching staff, who see him EVERY DAY anything, but fans who saw him in a meaningless preseason game think he needs to play with the starters in a game?

When’s Wolford gonna get ‘his shot with the ones?’. He looked better than both Trask and Mayfield in preseason. I mean, that’s the logic, right?

  19. Rick Says:

At the end of the day, best case scenario is we win the south and lose in the first playoff game like last year. What’s the point? Players like Evans and Lavonte won’t be part of the next elite Bucs team, so let’s trade them for draft picks who will turn into players who will be on that team. It’s quite simple. This is a decent team but it still needs help in the trenches upfront, needs another WR, needs a complete tight end, a difference making pass rusher, another middle linebacker who can cover, etc.

  20. Greg Says:

Joe, nobody cares about being the winners of a bad division when there’s no realistic hope of competing in the playoffs. The new coach will want his QB, and we will need help on BOTH sides of the trenches to be a real competitor. The dead cap space and QB situation is why were stuck with Bowels, we need to be a destination attractive for real coaches this offseason.

  21. ATLBuc Says:

I don’t understand it. So, you say that call bowls is on the hot seat. Yet, you talk about him getting rid of the pieces that will help him win now. Please explain.

  22. Alanbucsfan Says:

Giving up on the season with 10 games left while the team is 1/2 game out of 1st place in division would show fans that they’ve been suckers for supporting this team and would show the remaining players that their best option would be to play for themselves and future free agency.
Bucs need to keep working to fix fundamental issues on offense and the wins will start coming- Bucs are not getting blown out in losses, just lost opportunities that can be fixed with better execution.
Fans and I’m sure ownership want a competitive team – not a race to the top draft picks.

  23. NJbucs23 Says:

Reality is they won’t do anything and believe baker can take them to the playoffs. Hahaha. Fools gold ! This team needs to move on from high priced older FA

These guys should be moved today
    Evans
    White
    Barrett

We have to pay Winfield and Wirfs. Looking ahead, the bucs will be in great cap shape come 2025. Thats when our next run is, 2025 on.

We all knew this year was coming, 2020 and 2021 were worth the price to pay. Let’s reload.

But in reality, we won’t. 👎

  24. Mike S Says:

power sweep I agree that the NFL is trying to change the QB position. Its all about $$$ not winning.

Mobile QBs don’t have long careers. When they become a defacto 3rd running back they take a lot of hits and after some time injury catches up with them.

If injury doesn’t catch up then once they hit 30 most become washed because they can’t make as many plays with their legs anymore.

Not having to pay elite pocket passers a big contract after 30 will keep QB salaries down.

Its all buoyed by the idea of who is going to be the next Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes is a singular talent – he can make plays with his arm, his legs and above the neck. Mahomes isn’t a designed run guy though. He’s a scramble drill guy looking to extend plays with his legs while keeping his eyes downfield. Make no mistake though he can burn you on pre-snap reads too. He’s a unique and special player. Then there is Josh Allen who is more of a designed run guy at times – but as I said in that style of play injury will be more of a factor and Allen is toughing it out this season through some noticeable pain. Its why Buffalo took their foot off the gas last Thursday (but I digress).

What it leads to is not a bunch of Mahomes clones, but rather one read tuck and run type of play and that’s why NFL scoring is down. Counting on QBs to run the football – it’s a high school game plan and its boring at the pro level.

  25. Hodad Says:

Todd Monkin is doing good for the Ravens. He should be our next H.C.. Always liked Todd, told it like it was, we chose to suck, remember? Doesn’t seem to work out to well with the defensive minded coaches, Lovie, Bowles. We won it all with the firey Gruden, Arains, offensive minded coaches. Maybe the Glazers need to learn from history. Speaking of Gruden, come back Jon, all’s forgiven. Should’ve hired him as O.C..

  26. Tbbucs3 Says:

“ Joe, nobody cares about being the winners of a bad division when there’s no realistic hope of competing in the playoffs.”

Disagree, so last year when the Bucs obviously had no chance of making a Super Bowl you would rather lost to the Panthers than host a 1st round playoff game w the Cowboys? Playoffs are fun, losing is not.

This whole idea of tanking automatically makes teams better is nonsense. The Bucs can try to make a playoff game and add key free agents in the off-season and can still eventually become contenders without blowing up the roster.

  27. CHRISTOS Says:

Is it realistic to win the Division ?
Sure even if we re not very good because the other teams arent really good either. Although that loss to ATL was disturbing.
    But a Superbowl run ?
Come on now lets not kid ourselves. We re not close to that level and it is obvious. Even when the team was 3-1 you could see that we re not anywhere near the contenters.
    Go Bucs

  28. DoooshLaRue Says:

Fingers crossed but I’d bet we don’t change a thing.

  29. JN Says:

Joe – this team is not going anywhere. Ok, let’s say Bucs win division… what then? Host a playoff gm against Dallas, SF or Seattle where we will get crushed again. This franchise is going nowhwere… need to get young (and fast) and make smart LONG term answers to rebuild roster.
Would you commit 100M to Deva White? Would you pay an aging (I love Mike) Mike Evans 25M per year? Joe – is the money we are paying Dean and Davis worth it? It’s time to move one of the corners, and get something for White and Evans. Bucs need more draft capital to reload roster. It’s gonna take time and gonna take patience. But that’s a Bucs life for you…. let’s be SELLERS NOT BUYERS!

  30. Mike S Says:

My read on this is Trask is like a spectre looming over Bowles and Baker. There are many fans that want to see Trask on the field. They know that at OneBuc and it is yet another excuse of why things aren’t going so well. So to solve that problem they trade Trask to one of the teams desperate for a QB.

Now everyone has to commit to Baker and they have Wolford as his backup. No more Trask Mob. No controversy as the losses mount.

That isn’t a move to help the franchise. Its a move that says screw you to fans. They aren’t going to fire Bowles at the end of the year and they are going to force us to suffer for at least an additional year with the moxie guy at QB and the HC who we just watched make bonehead calls last Thursday night.

Yes we think Trask is a talent, but equally we think Mayfield is just a journeyman at best and not the answer. We also think Bowles should have been fired last year. But really who cares about what the fans (who spend the money) think?

Committing to Mayfield who is underperforming on a prove it deal over Trask who is a draft pick under contract for multiple seasons is flat out dumb. But hey it’s a Buc’s life right? If that happens then you know the Glazers are hamstrung by Bowles 5 year deal and don’t want to fire him with multiple years on it outstanding.

  31. Tbbucs3 Says:

When and where did this logic of if you don’t have a clear shot at the Superbowl then you should just tank and give up on your season come from?

It’s utter stupidity, might as well tell the bottom half of the league to give up and stop trying cause we might not a win a superbowl wah!! Luckily not 1 NFL coach thinks this way.

I’s extremely rare to win a Superbowl so Id rather go through each season fighting for a winning record than another lost decade.

  32. Buddha Says:

This was when Carolina became wholesale sellers last year. How did that work out? Lovie tanked and we got the can’t miss #1, Jameis Winston. How did that work out. If you want a reality check look at the roster and tell me what coach would be better than 3-4 with this roster. We are paying off the lease on Tom Brady.

  33. JN Says:

Joe – here’s something to ponder??? The Bucs brought up Wolford from practice squad to :
    a) keep other teams like Rams or Vikes from signing him
    b) they are trading Baker to said teams above.

Think about it – Baker knows those offenses (and McVay loves the guy), the Bucs can give keys to Trask and see what he has with 9 games remaining and acquire draft pick(s).

If any of this is even close to truth that means (I would think) they are gonna move others like I noted in above post. Like I have said and been saying – Bucs need to be SELLERS NOTS BUYERS

  34. SufferingSince76 Says:

Great quote, Dewey. I miss Coach McKay’s wit.

  35. Nicholas Carlson Says:

People do tend to underestimate how hard it is to reload/rebuild.

  36. LOL Says:

No S&%$, they should have had a fire sale pre-season.

  37. CChead Says:

100% agree with this. Look how Jax traded away veterans for a bunch of draft picks and restocked their team. Now they are legit contenders. Bucs should do the same. This version of the Bucs is going nowhere this year or anytime in the near future.
They are more than a player or 2 away from contending for a championship again. They need to upgrade almost every key position on both sides of the ball.
Stack picks for a new head coach in 2024 and get a franchise QB coming out in the draft.

  38. DBS Says:

Just look at the defense. being pushed around. And the Offense absolute no question. Sell,Sell ,Sell.

  39. D Cone Says:

Lamar Jackson knows that being a mobile threat will cut his career short and end seasons with injury. He is being transformed to a pocket passer. Philly seems to be following with Hurts.
Denver has shown what can be accomplished when you shut down a QB’s go to guy and block off escape routes of a mobile guy against the Chiefs.

Unless Baker has a 1000 plus yard rusher he will struggle no matter how many quick passes and check downs he throws.

Cousins was putting up great numbers and proved they could win games even minus their Star receiver. Pocket passers like Goff can dice up a defense but in a windy outdoor environment needs a running game.

Minnesota Offense is tailor made for a guy like Trask and I was hoping that they would trade for him. Looking at the Salary Cap situation for Tampa it has Mayfield’s Market Value @ 15.4 million next season. If he can get a 2 year 30mil contract in 2024, good for him but I doubt Tampa will be offering that.

With the Bucs signing Wolford to the active roster to keep from losing him to the Rams it is possible Trask trade is still possible and I say Amen to that.

Vikings have a great Tight End and Kyle has proven he can operate well with that type of offense.

  40. BrianBucs Says:

Bowles, and maybe even Licht know they need wins to keep their jobs, so don’t expect anything drastic.
As long as this division stinks they think they still have a shot.

  41. FortMyersDave Says:

Barnwell reminds me of that Boston homer Peter/Pierre Gammons who always thought that teams like the Rays and the O’s should trade cheap to his fave teams like the BoSux at the trade deadline. You know trade a decent pitcher or hitter for 2 AA guys with low ceiling (equivalent of a 6th or 7th draft pick that will get cut). The dude is a moron, ignore his gibberish!

  42. Marine Buc Says:

It’s not fair to say the entire o-line sucks.

Our tackles are playing very well. Wirfs is a top 5 rated tackle and Goedeke is ranked @ #16. That is pretty solid.

It’s our two starting guards and our inept center that is causing problems. The Bucs have the worst interior o-line in the NFL and perhaps in NFL history.

    A. Stinnie graded out very well in Buffalo. He should replace Mauch when Feiler returns but it probably won’t happen because our GM is as stubborn as a donkey when it comes to playing his prized draft picks over more productive veterans.

  43. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We’re at the trade deadline. What you are all asking for is extremely unlikely.

    BA’s Red Pen Says:

“Listen up occult of Trask members, IF TRASK WAS ANY GOOD THE BUCS WOULD NOT HAVE SIGNED JOURNEYMAN BAKER MAYFIELD IN THE FIRST PLACE.”

    Traskmasters.

You are 100% wrong, and it has already been proven.

Bowles didn’t want to risk his job on an inexperienced young guy. He wanted a veteran. The entire ‘QB competition ‘ was a lie, as evidenced by the fact that Trask performed better in training camp and Bowles still went with Baker.

    But that’s in the past.

We want Trask in so he can be developed…either as a starter or as a qualified backup. If he hapoens to turn into what we need as starter, that’s a plus.

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    No trade is happening.

  45. ScottyMack Says:

Love all the speculation about the Wolford move. I’m thinking … or you could wait a few hours and actually see what happens. My bet, as I have said before, is that they do absolutely nothing.

  46. Bucs Fan From Philly Says:

Mike Evans, Devin White, Ryan Neal for a 7th.

  47. Mark hardt Says:

The big cap hit is Brady and that will go away. I say hold the line as is and you can spend on Free agents in March

  48. BradyGronk Fan Says:

The Bucs are actually a pretty good team and Mayfield is a decent QB.
The problem is the head coach. Replace Todd Bowles with Bruce Arians and this is a 10 and 7 team with a chance of winning a playoff game or two.

Last years team was also a 10 and 7 team brought down to 8 and 9 by Todd Bowles.

  49. Henry Says:

Trade! Trade! Trade! while they still have some value. You think Evans is going to sign next year with this dumpster fire? Is he going to want to play this dumbed down offense or partake in a rebuild “if Bowles is fired” at the tail end of his career? White is as good as gone. Give LVD the checkbook and let him fill in the blanks, a true warrior. While you are at it, trade CD and that other underachiever. Its time to face the music and start the rebuild. Sorry Todd, if you need me I will call you.

  50. pewter941 Says:

Could signing Wolford be a sign of trading Trask?

  51. JN Says:

    pewter941 – no. Baker.

  52. Defense Rules Says:

StormyInFL … ‘The only people who think they need to ‘see him (Trask) with the starters’ are fans. It’s painfully obvious he hasn’t shown the coaching staff, who see him EVERY DAY anything’.

So Kyle Trask hasn’t shown this coaching staff that the majority of JBFers complain are idiots that he’s not a viable NFL QB? NOW you start trusting this coaching staff as talent evaluators?

I have no idea if Trask can get anything more out of this offense than Mayfield has, but I am curious. We’ll never know if we keep him sitting on the bench, will we.

  53. Jerseybuc Says:

    D. White I would rest no

  54. Destinjohnny Says:

We are missing to many draft pics people

  55. Mad Mike Park Says:

Trade Bowles to the jets for a bowl of peanuts and nyfd
    beer coozie.

  56. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

DW and Shaq should be on there way out of Tampa this afternoon

  57. Red86 Says:

Reasons to start Trask if this keeps up.

We can draft a Center if he pans out to replace Jensen or other position. 😔 A new rookie qb will still be inexperienced like the current situation. 🤦‍♂️

We have another year with a rookie contract.

He get the experience needed to develop some more.

If Mayfield continue to not help score to complement this solid defense, then he most likely not going to be signed. So, we are still with two or more inexperienced qbs on the roster.

  58. BigBucJoe Says:

The reality is that this team is going nowhere as long as Bowles is the head coach.

  59. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Mad Mike I would demand at least one of those fireman helmets.

  60. deuceswild78 Says:

i would definitely dump White… not like he is doing anything… if the deal is right, i’d dump carlton and evans … they owe it the long time bucs to either get better today or get them to better teams

  61. Tackleblockwin Says:

The question of selling players should start with one or two simpler question. That question is this: Does winning a division title have any value? Do we only care about a chance at at a SB run? In a weak division we have a chance at the playoffs, but does that even matter considering we likely lose in first round? Ok, that is more than a few questions.

  62. Duane in Sanford Says:

The more comments I read the more I am convinced there will be no trades. It goes both ways folks. If Evans, White, Davis, Dean, Godwin, and Barrett are good enough to trade for, why is our team so bad? What trade value is there for 30 something players, or guys that dont get sacks or interceptions and big salary hits? I will take a 500 season and shot at the division over any of the lost decade seasons. Stop with the championships fill seats in RayJay nonsense- lots of opposing fans filled our stadium when we won alot. Fairweather fans can just set their clock for 20 years and check back in with us then.

  63. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

My opinion this is a soft rebuild year. Had to let some talent walk but they signed what they considered the core and sprinkled in some cheap FA and undrafted rookies. And from what i read last year the succession plan for Brady was narrowed down to 4 vets and old Baker was part of that conversation until Brady unretired. So, i figure they’re going to pass on signing anyone and roll what they have into next years cap, try to hang onto ME, AW, DW and BM. Lots of guys here hate Baker because he isn’t playing hero-ball. Go back and check what Bowles and Canales expected out of him; protect the ball and play within the system. Next year i expect an upgrade at C and LG either FA or R2-4 picks

  64. power sweep Says:

Mike S Says: “power sweep I agree that the NFL is trying to change the QB position. It’s all about $$$ not winning.”

I actually think it’s about wokeness.

  65. power sweep Says:

An intelligent, rational team does this:

    1. Trade Mayfield for draft picks.

    2. Play Trask for the first time ever with starters in games.

    3. Evaluate Trask.

    4. Determine whether Trask is the guy.

    5. Draft accordingly in 2024.

  66. JN Says:

Bucs should be doing what the Redskins are doing (sorry, they are still the Redskins – no offense)… now they have traded Chase Young (to 49ers) and Montez Sweat (to Bears).

  67. BucaneroJim Says:

@ Defense Rules agreed… ??? JBFers seem to castigate the Bucs coaches as inept on almost every thing, then about face claim they are highly competent and wise about evaluating Trask for 3 years.

My guess, is the Bucs sit on hands for the trade period. With all the QB injuries going on, Wolford was brought up for security – not for any trade scheme. Tomorrow will tell.

  68. Defense Rules Says:

JN … Sweat (27) is on-track to have roughly 16 sacks this year, and Young (24) is on-track to get about 12-13 sacks. Bucs desperately need a pass rusher. So WHY didn’t we grab one of those two while Washington was shopping them?

  69. JN Says:

DefenseRules – A buddy of mine just asked me same question. At least they are known commodities. Have not heard what WAS got in compensation. This is why (lack of pass rush) Bucs have the worst 3rd down defense in the NFL

  70. Defense Rules Says:

DR … ‘So WHY didn’t we grab one of those two while Washington was shopping them?’

Wait I just figured out the answer. JL was asleep at the wheel.

  71. Hammerhead Says:

This forever Bucs fan is somewhat optimistic about the teams chances in NFC South. Never say die.
Am, however, reminded of Wayne Fontes, the former coach of the Lions in the 80″s. They were a 50/50 team and never sucked enough for a high draft but always drafted middle of the pack.

Wayne grew up in Tampa. Why I followed the Lions and Arcadia High School Jim Yarbrough.

Don’t make the mistake of always being average.

  72. David Says:

I think Evans and LVD need to retire Buccaneers. Other than that I have no problem going after draft picks with Gholston or Barrett or Jensen or maybe Dean or Davis, but not both.
They need to stockpile picks and they have to keep dumping salary. Priority one get their franchise quarterback in the draft.

  73. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

Blah blah …same old tired canned answers from Bowles.
    we are working on it
We spoke about it the room..
    We addressed it
and the press just rolls over and excepts the same answer every week with no accountability. Never seen him pressed.. the press say thanks and blow him kisses. his lack of respect for the press shld be embarrassing .
honestly don’t knw what’s worse the coaching or the lack of and follow up questioning at the press conferences..
    Let’s Go Bucs!!

  74. garro Says:

Let the armchair genious GM games begin. Best post wins a free Big Steam Brew from Joe!
