Baker Mayfield takes home the coveted Angry Runs award in Week 1.
Minutes after Baker Mayfield stiff-armed a Vikings cornerback and threw him out of the club yesterday, Joe was taking a screenshot and hitting up NFL Network host Kyle Brandt.
Brandt is the scepter-keeper of the weekly Angry Runs feature on NFL Network. It goes to the mauler of the week on the ground. It’s all about the most physical ball carrier moment of the week.
Bucs running back Rachaad White won the coveted scepter last season for his hurl of a Seahawks defender. Devin White won it for a vicious return in 2020.
Yesterday’s winner was Mayfield.
Being mic’d up helped Mayfield. Brandt loved the trash talk. “Get that fuc*’n weight up,’ Mayfield barked at the Vikings defender after the play. But it was the nasty of a quarterback taking out a defender that was at the core of the decision.
Brandt relayed a conversation with Bucs Super Bowl-winning general manager Jason Licht after the game. Per Brandt, Licht said. “I gott theory about these players: either you’re a dude or you’re not. Baker is a dude.”

Looks like Baker will have more TDs than Rogers this year. (But, really hate to see any player get injured.). Bucs need to stay healthy in order to compete for the division.

Wow, great take by Brandt! He sure has come up in the world since he was a producer at the Jim Rome Show and calling the show live on air from Wrigley Field drunk as a skunk. Looks like people are beginning to give Mayfield a bit of credit and respect. Hopefully he brings that same intensity to the home opener next Sunday!

I thought it was an angry run candidate when it happened. Its a silly award, but gets a few more eyes on the players. In the heat of the moment “Get your weight up” is much better than “Joben”.

I hope we’ve retired “moxie” now for good! I can accept Stiff arm Baker or some variation but it was an Oklahoma fan who got my vote.
He claimed Bucs will love Baker once that like Sooner fans they realize that Baker has “DAWG” in him.

Trust me. Baker will not be able to stiff arm and get away with it repeatedly. And if he keeps running with the ball, Some Defensive guy is going to take him out just like they did Rodgers last night. Simply put, Baker may be a dude, But you got some Defensive players out there who are beast and gorillas. And they will hurt a QB.

It’s always fun to see a football player put the wood to an opponent, and it’s especially satisfying to see a quarterback – normally the target of some of the worst punishment in the game of football – do so. But at the same time, I very much want to see Baker Mayfield make a successful career comeback starting this season with the Bucs.
I do NOT want to see Baker hauled off the field on a cart as was Aaron Rodgers last night.
A lot of Bucs fans seemed to whine about Tom Brady being too “antsy” with his throws avoiding hits and sacks, and making fun of his “statue in the pocket” style of quarterback play. But then Tom Brady is the GOAT, and he played football for 22 years until age 45, and rarely got injured. In his three years with the Bucs he missed not a single game due to injury.
I’d prefer that Baker Mayfield not show up on the “angry runs” tape and instead just play quarterback and do so very well.

Rodgers injury came on one of the most innocuous sacks I’ve ever seen cause injury. It wasn’t really a violent hit, it was the ACCIDENTAL way Rodgers put pressure on the ball of his foot that hopefully just strained his achilles and not tore it.
You can’t play scared! This is why I was trying to tell the Trask lovers it’s all good that he blossomed this year. The Bucs have at least one and it looks like they now have TWO capable of playing in the NFL.
