“We Need That Type Of Energy”

September 15th, 2023
Loving his quarterback.

Loving his quarterback.

It was a Baker Mayfield lovefest on “Good Morning Football” today.

The popular NFL Network morning show had Bucs linebacker Devin White as a guest for a segment. And co-host Kyle Brandt, he of the “Angry Runs” scepter, asked White what kind of a vibe Mayfield, your Bucs quarterback, brings to the locker room.

White seems to be a Mayfield guy and more or less said Mayfield is one of the guys and brings youthful energy to the locker room.

“I think the thing with Baker is, he’s cool,” White began. “He’s actually one of those guys that’s on social media. That’s having fun in the locker room.

“At the end of the day, he’s a younger guy. We’ve been having Tom for along time which was great and you love everything that comes with him.

“Now you’ve got a guy that wants to run the ball and get hit and get up and talk noise. So it’s actually fun to have ‘Bake’ in there.”

White admitted he loved the run for a first down last week from Mayfield that earned him the “Angry Runs” scepter. And the clip of Mayfield running smack on a Vikings defensive back after Mayfield stiff-armed him, White said that’s the same Mayfield he sees in practice — a dude just having fun with his teammates.

“We need that type of energy,” White added.

Maybe Joe is reading between the lines but it seems Mayfield is or has bonded more with his teammates and appears to be one of the guys.

It got me crunk when he shouted “Get your weight up!”

  2. Bobby Says:

I’ve watched the game numerous times as well as the coaches film on NFL+ and I have to say, if this is the basement I can’t wait to see what the ceiling is. I’m lovin’ me some Baker Mayfield. These guys will go to war with him as their leader.

  3. SufferingSince76 Says:

    Crunk?

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

My wife trash talks me….but, “Get your weight down”….

Too bad “Angry Runs” wasn’t around for Mike Alstott…..he would have won it every week…….

  5. JimBobBuc Says:

Good stuff from White and Baker. White had a monster game, he’s playing for a contract, and he’s a competitor that hates to lose. Baker is the same, a competitor. Against Minnesota in the first half, I think Baker was amped up with the overthrows and later settled down with the quick offense. I think Baker will be calmer against Chicago and we can always run the quick offense to calm him down. Baker needs to be a little smarter with his runs.

  6. Boss Says:

BM had a good second 1/2. 1st 1/2 was ugly.

I liked they way BM played in the 2nd 1/2…will reserve annointing him until he has an entire solid couple games. DW was in beast mode!!! now give DW a scent of fields drawers and let him hunt. spy style..

  7. Mike C Says:

Crunk is a middle aged man’s way of saying he is excited.

  8. Boss Says:

think I will get crunk at the Guns N Roses concert tonight!

  9. StormyInFl Says:

I’m thinking they go back to what they did to shut down Mahomes. They didn’t blitz him. Disciplined pass rush and don’t let Fields break outside contain. Force everything to the middle and let White and David feast.

  10. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Guns and Roses?
Sponsored by Krispy Kreme and Geritol right?
Get there early for the bingo and Miracle Ear raffle.
Maybe Axl can autograph your cane.

    Should be a super-crunk time.

  11. Watch More ALL22 Before Commenting Says:

White has gotten a lot of sh*t this offseason, but I’m not seeing anything bad out of him in-season.

  12. J Ghotier Says:

Did White just say that part of being “cool” means being “on social media”?

🤦‍♂️ yep, this world is doomed for sure…just a matter of how long now!

  13. stpetebucfan Says:

I’ve posted this once before and I’m sure plenty made fun of it given DW’s contract negotiations.

The cynical wish to believe Oh yeah now he plays because it’s a contract year.
I’m not a moron…although many here believe that to be true. LOL
I realize that DW’s finances are effected by this season.

Effected? Yes he’s already a multimillionaire worth over ten million already. Yep 20 million annually is on the line and if he doesn’t play like Sunday…oh noes that could drop to a paltry 15 million.

I prefer the positive if pollyanna view that Devin already has businesses his horses and more $$$ that he can really spend. Much of his upset I feel has to do with pride. He wants to be paid at what he considers a respectful level,

Someone mentioned his sore shoulder last year and his effort to cover that up. He’s obviously healthy this year and that makes a difference.

In my original post I said a major difference I saw was Devin having more fun than since his rookie year. Now we get these comments!

“At the end of the day, he’s a younger guy. We’ve been having Tom for along time which was great and you love everything that comes with him.

“Now you’ve got a guy that wants to run the ball and get hit and get up and talk noise. So it’s actually FUN to have ‘Bake’ in there.”

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

I like the energy Baker brings too. White played lights out too. I mean Devin. The other White played like he needs an enema or something.

  15. Mike S Says:

stpetebuc was Devin injured? Or was he fat catting it? Seems the guy pulled off the throttle last season. Now he wants a contract his foot is back on the gas.

What’s going to happen when he gets the contract? Does he maintain the intensity? Or does he dial it back again?

  16. Mike S Says:

I’ll follow up by saying no matter what it affects his value and you have to adjust accordingly. Yeah him dialing it back up is good for him 100%, but he already screwed up by creating that doubt.

I get it he’s a young guy and there is a learning curve here – not in football but in life – but we’re talk about a potential $100M contract. When you pay a guy that $$ you expect him to bring it – full commitment. If not, then what you get is your cap space absorbed by a guy who thinks he’s at the country club. Then you don’t field a competitive ballclub. With the parity of talent that this level – what’s in the heart makes a difference between winning and losing.

It also could be that Devin shows us he true potential this season. He’s not a rookie. His talent has never been in question. Could this be his best year? If he reaches the stratospheric level doubts will be erased and he’s going to get paid.

  17. Kidfloflo Says:

Since the Bears main threat is Fields, I’d keep White glued to him all game, since his weakness is in pass coverage and let his speed take Justin down if he tries to get loose! I Remember great clip of Vick mic’ed up on side line in his prime saying a “their too fast” after Brooks etc chased him down all game!

  18. Marine Buc Says:

Bucs who have so far earned their new contracts after week one:

    D. White – YES
    A. Winfield – YES
    L. David – YES
    T- Wirfs – YES
    M. Evans – NO

  19. EternalSon Says:

To me, Devin White is a gifted downhill attacker.

    In coverage, below average.

Only if I can maximize his abilities so I consider paying him big $.

Full disclosure: I’m not on social media (uncool)

  20. EternalSon Says:

    ….do I consider..

  21. Crickett Baker Says:

StPeteBF please learn the difference between “effective” and “affective”.

I was surprised that Devon was such a good speaker on the show. His comments were succinct and educated. He really surprised me in his speech, as well as his gameplay. Hope he keeps it up!

  22. orlbucfan Says:

People seem to forget on here that most of these players we jaw about have a SB ring. No wonder, Marpet retired and Whitehead split for $$greener$$ pastures c/o Jets. I hope the SB vets will inspire the rookies who don’t have those rings (yet) to play great this season. Go Mighty Bucs!!

  23. Leopold Stotch Says:

Bruh, I’m 30 and remember Lil Jon saying Crunk all the time in middle school… Don’t call me middle aged 😭.

  24. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

    That was a fun segment.

  25. garro Says:

Ok, I am officially on the shut up and play bandwagon with this guy!

Fine to say a lot of this stuff when you had a hundred yard rushing day. He did not. In fact he looked like Lenny. Dancing around …slowly… in the backfield.

    Go Bucs!

  26. garro Says:

    Oops…Wrong White LOL
Still applies though. He tackled like a demon. Still lost coverage twice though costing us big time.

    Go Bucs!

  27. Daniel Dream Says:

Can we all get this right please?

“Get your weight up” is NOT a reference to body mass or anything of the sort. It is slang for a bench press or similar weightlifting exercise. There’s a lot of hip hop songs about this if you’re still unsure of the concept- or you can go to the gym. Get yo weight up yo- you get stronger one rep at a time!
