Todd Bowles Critiques Rachaad White

September 26th, 2023

Rachaad White

Head coach Todd Bowles had a detailed report today on the struggles of running back Rachaad White, who has limped his way to a 3.1 yards-per-carry average despite being among the league leaders in total rush attempts.

“Rachaad’s gotta hit it. I think he tried to make too many big plays when it was a grind-out type of game,” Bowles said. “You’re not going to get big plays on these guys. You gotta start hitting it up in there, getting two, three and four yards and hope you can break one later on. He probably had too many cuts trying to make an explosive play — something out of nothing, as opposed to taking what they give him. And given the magnitude of the game, knowing it was going to be one of those type of games, just from an experience standpoint he can get better that way and he will.”

Joe agrees with Bowles, but what’s troubling about this is that White had the same kind of issues in Week 1. Hit the hole! Hammer the line more!

Why isn’t that coaching getting through to White?

Ironically, buried running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn is that kind of hard runner. The dude still has just 17 carries since he led the Bucs in a playoff win against the Eagles in January of 2022.

  1. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Is Sneak still getting paid by the team? If so, the coaches need to get over personal problems they have with him and put that employee to work. Otherwise, why is he on the roster?

  2. Smashsquatch Says:

Agreed. Way too much dancing. He needs to pick a lane and go.

  3. Upstate NY BUC Says:

    JONTHAN TAYLOR please… GO Bucs!!!

  4. Aceofaerospace Says:

White should have been benched early in the game. Run to the line and stop time after time. Disgusting. It’s like he’s afraid to get hit. He could hurt the d line if he would just take them on.

  5. RagingBrisket Says:

The oline doesn’t move anyone so there are no holes or running lanes. Better running will only help on the margins because this oline is inept at best in run blocking. That’s all on the guy who puts the roster together, Jason Licht. Ask him about why we can’t run the ball.

  6. DS Says:

Not a hard nosed runner however running up the gut doesn’t help either

  7. Aceofaerospace Says:

Ps. He reminds me of the bad Dexter Jackson.

  8. Jack Clark Says:

Anyways, I blame the offensive line. Kinda hard for any running back to gain yards when they’re getting hit before they can even cross the frigging line of scrimmage.

  9. Durango 95 Says:

It would be nearly impossible for Vaughn to do any worse than White.

  10. Pelsbuc61 Says:

White has proven he’s not the answer. Tucker is no big deal. Might as well give Vaughn a try a trade for Rashad Penny. Nevertheless, this Oline is horrible in the running game.

  11. RumDude Says:

Did Playoff Lenny teach White those backfield dance moves before he left town?

  12. Easy The Great Says:

Hes playing like a poor mans Leveon Bell right now. Hit the hole and go!

  13. SB~LV Says:

Yeah..when there are NO holes and the defense makes it’s reads.

  14. bucnjim Says:

Not big on White in general but again the D line was literally in the backfield as the ball was being handed off. Not sure running the ball against the #1 run defense was a great game plan to begin with.

  15. Why Bowles? Says:

Help me out but I don’t recall too many oline stunts or pulling last night more straight on blocking. I am not sure how everyone is down on White. Swift skated until he found a hole, the difference I saw was there were no holes. He ran right up the backs of his oline on the safety. Does baker have the authority to auditable out of that play? He had to see what the Eagles were going to do. We all like ME13 but he is no longer the go to #1. He is not in the category of Jefferson, Hill, Adam’s, Diggs and even AJ Brown. In his prime absolutely but now Bucs have 2 #2A’s. I put him ore in the Toomer, Waddle, Thielan, Locket category. Yes he has those consecutive 1000yd season but even in 2020 it was a stretch to get him there. I’m not saying trade him but he is no longer a $20M man. 170yds against the Bears missing two starting safeties isn’t as impressive as it seems.

  16. Dwayne Cone Says:

Opposed to taking what they were giving? I don’t think the Eagle’s defensive line was giving anything. Meanwhile Eagle’s O Line was opening holes Troy Aikman could run thru. Watch the tape and copy it. Just like teams are copying the push play.

If the Eagle’s gave anything it was a late 4th Quarter Touchdown to allow the Bucs some dignity before taking the ball down the field on a 9 1/2 minute drive to end the game.

Forget it and win some games between now and week 11 when it probably happens again.

  17. Winny Testaverde Says:

The Hair Bear Bunch…Joe Keep Tryon, Logan Hall Pass and now Recede White.

Sweet powdered wigs…not so sweet NFLers

  18. SB~LV Says:

Hainsey is a lightweight NFL center.
Mauch gets ragdolled , he needs a year or two NFL diet and weight training before he his ready.
DC’s of up coming games have seen the weaknesses exposed last night.
The team is already experiencing injuries to their starters.
That said the team is playing well considering all the factors and showing signs to build on.

  19. Canabuc Says:

Maybe I like Rachaad White better than some other people but fact of the matter is there were no holes to run through. Yes you could have ran hard for one yard instead of maybe losing one but I also think the play calling was terrible. There were a couple of runs he had that were actually pretty good when they went to the outside. Not sure why you try to run between the tackles when their front defensive line is so big and strong. I would have tried more sweeps…

  20. NutterBuccer Says:

Still belive in white but let’s see Vaughn. Enough is enough. We have another hard test vs the saints this week. If the run game doesn’t show some improvement I expect an addition to be made in the nye week. Cam akers could of been had for peanuts but once again we can’t get a running back. Add ronald jones. He can hot a hole atleast

  21. Kgh4life Says:

Bucs are not trading for Taylor. Too expensive, it’s not like the Bucs are Superbowl contenders.

  22. JimBobBuc Says:

It’s hard to run when there are no holes because your OL is being out physicalled. I don’t think much of White, but I actually saw him avoid some tackles on a couple of successful runs and passes. Licht drafted White because he can catch the ball, not because he’s a great runner. Throw more passes to him.

I’m not ready to give up on Tucker. He missed a lot of training camp. I hope with more reps, he can improve his patience and vision and become RB1. We have seen White and understand what he can do, let’s give Tucker more reps and see if he can duplicate his college tape.

Sneak screwed himself over, we all understand that, and now I’m sure he does too. I think the O-line in the preseason screwed him over too with terrible blocking on his attempts. Sneak has improved over the years, but how much? He had that long run against Carolina so he can do it. What’s White’s longest run? 15 yards?

I think our draft evaluations under Licht haven’t been bad, look at this year’s draft. However, Licht’s team is bad at evaluating RB talent and something needs to change in our draft evaluations for RB’s.

  23. Fansince76 Says:

I’m at that point where i want Vaughn get multiple carries to see if he can produce better that White and Tucker cause they aint producing!

  24. Infomeplease Says:

RW did stuggle yesterday but don’t just blame him Todd!! The Bucs scored with a little over 9 minutes left. Down by 2 scores. The Bucs defense struggled to get off the field. Eagles use up about 6 minutes of the clock. TB doesn’t use time outs to save time. The Bucs get the ball back with 3 minutes! Then they lay down or did they lay down at the 9 minute mark? I don’t get this. Bad bad bad clock management and a coaching!!

NFL games are 60 minutes long. Even if you’re getting the sh!t kicked out of you, you play 60 minutes!! At least that’s what the best, well coached teams do! IMHO. Todd Bowles quiting with 9 or 3 minutes left in the game, no matter how bad you played the first 51 or 57 minutes, sets a bad example for his players! “It’s ok to quit” . Winners don’t quit. Losers do! If you play hard, make plays, and get some luck anything is possible!!! It happens!!

  25. Boss Says:

translation. We want one yard and a cloud of dust.

newsflash lovie- that wont cut it

  26. Jeff Says:

White has poor vision. Simple as that.

  27. DayOnePaul Says:

Canales continues to pound it to the offensive left side almost exclusively. Feiler was unwanted when the Bucs signed him, Wirfs is learning a new position, and Hainsey is a serviceable starter at best. Of course, running to the right behind a rookie and a failed guard moved to tackle is likely a worse option. I’m ready to see Stinnie at LG. We won a Super Bowl with him at guard. It’s obvious to me already that the ’24 Draft needs to lean into I.O.L. for this running game to improve.

  28. Pryda…sec147 Says:

Play angry gotta be a violent runner give and take punishment. You got another chance against the saints. You better have a great game or it’s walk the plank time

  29. optimisticbucsfan Says:

Total bust. Licht wouldn’t know a decent RB if walter payton punched him in the face

  30. Aubpierce Says:

Move White to wide receiver like Miami did over thirty years ago with Nat Moore. Buy Mike Evans new gloves and glasses if he needs them’s, to many drops.Give a Vaughn a chance, sign RoJo, he is the only one a we can afford. I am tired of people on this sight saying Rojo can’t catch . I took time to look up the stats a few years ago of both Lenny and Rojo and found out their catch percent was almost identical. Rojo a couple percent less over the time frame I looked up.

  31. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist and Founder of UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Tucker gets like 1-2 carries/game right now and then when he doesn’t do anything productive with them, they give up on him the rest of the game.

They need to start doing Sorento similar to that with White.

And they need to give Tucker and Vaughn a few carries each and see if any of them are poppin that gamec and then feed that person.

We keep sticking with White and bashing our heads into the wall ever since last year when he had ONE good game against Seattle. He hasn’t been productive since.

  32. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist and Founder of UniqueModernArt.com Says:

    *something similar, not sorento

  33. Bucsfanman Says:

White would be more effective if he stuck his foot in the ground and went forward. Yes we have OL issues but it’s exacerbated when the RB hesitates in the backfield.

  34. Bobby Says:

White is a bust draft pick, JTS a bust too

  35. doolnutts Says:

DayOnePaul – Totally agree on our OL. They aren’t bad but they are definitely dominating anyone and its going to stay that way. If you want to truly run the football like lets say the eagles you need maulers all along the OL. Swift didn’t beat us he hit holes that you could drive a bus through. The entire line is very good all 5 guys for the eagles. I would argue we only have 1 very good guy in Wirfs.

We should also be seeing more Vaughn. Not sure why he is in the dog house so much but White and Tucker arent getting it down. Maybe Vaugn will be more willing to just slam it down the gut instead of dance.

  36. Scott Says:

Licht can not draft RBs period

  37. Jack Sparrow Says:

Our first offensive plays next week: 1st and 10, hand the ball to White, run through the middle hit a wall loss 2 yards. 2nd and 12, maybe its a fluke, hand the ball to white again this time try to run around the D-line but was tackled, gain back 2 yards, 3rd and 10, throw to Evans on the side, drop the ball and complain for holding. No flag…. 4th and 10,,,, PUNT!!! BUCS life !!!

  38. Oxycondomns Says:

Knowing this they still run it with white from out of the endzone leading to a safety.

  39. gp Says:

How many times do y’all need to bang your head into a wall before you realize there isn’t a doorway there?

White may not be a great runner, but the best of all time would not have gained many more yards with that play calling and our O-line -vs- the iggles D.
There ain’t no gold in them thar hills!

  40. CleanHouse Says:

I have a critique- he sucks

  41. Austin Cline Says:

That’s just who he is as an RB. Unfortunately we don’t have many options.

  42. Architek Says:

Uhhh this is why mediocre and bad teams stay mediocre.

White couldn’t get away with this on a winning or contending team. Why are we tolerating this stuff every week.

Dam is it that hard to see?

  43. Rayjay1122 Says:

    @CleanHouse, I second that sentiment.

  44. Bobby M. Says:

Fournettee was the same way in short yardage….too much tap dancing, not enough blasting. Unfortunately White is probably the best all around RB that we have. He catches well, solid in pass protection, just really avg in running. Vaughn is a better pure runner but he’s suspect in the passing game. Tucker is a rookie that hasn’t shown much. That’s our RB unit….probably the weakest position group on the team.

  45. Cobraboy Says:

    White is the anti-Mark Alstott.

  46. gp Says:

A classic example of a team that studies and game plans for their opponents strengths and weaknesses(Eagles) -vs- a team that uses the same game plan, week in and week out regardless of who they meet(Bucs).

You can’t expect different results under those circumstances.

I thought there were signs that our coaching staff was learning to make adjustments. But after last night, I’m guessing that was just smoke and gas.

  47. Statguy Says:

They could at least remove one of these bozos and bring Ronnie Brown back

  48. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

    Michael Pittman hit the hole.

  49. Craig Says:

Even Joe Buck knew when they were going to run up the middle.

Why not try something like running behind Kieft outside?

Maybe by the end of the season the O-line might be worth running behind, but they aren’t right now.

Whole team still get an F for effort last night.

  50. gotbbucs Says:

I thought this was supposed to be some kind of mid/outside zone running scheme? So far, this running game looks identical to last year.

  51. Steelers fan Says:

Crazy how people want to move off a talent like White so fast but wont say a bad word about a loser like Baker. MINDBLOWING

  52. Pepsi Says:

I agree but he’s done this twice in 3 games now. Are we really hoping to develop a RB mid season and expect his tendencies to change. It’s not like these guys haven’t played football before.

  53. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Need a power back, some big ugly that will crash helmets. White is a scatback, 3rd and 5 potential pass catcher

  54. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

    (1) NOT PASSING ON 1ST DOWN IS FOOLISH IN TODAY’S NFL (2) NOT USING TREY PALMER AS OFTEN AS WE DID ANTONIO BROWN IS FOOLISH ! ,THE MAN HAS SPEED,GREAT HANDS & CAN MOVE THE STICKS & CATCH THE LONG BALL !(3) THE 2 TIGHT END FORMATION WAS OVER UTILIZED IN MONDAYS GAME( HAVE FAITH IN YOUR O-LINE ! ) (4)RAKIM GARRETT’S SPEED NEEDS TO BE UTILIZED MORE (5) MORE FAITH HAS TO BE PUT IN BAKER MAYFIELD’S THROWING PROWESS ! (6) STOP TRYING TO PROTECT SOMETHING THAT ISN’T EVEN THERE YET..USE MORE UPSPEED TEMPO & WING IT MORE..USE YOUR BEST ASSET ( YOUR PASSING GAME, TO OPEN UP YOUR RUNNING GAME !..NO MATTER WHO THE OPPONENT IS, PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTH’S 1ST, NOT YOUR WEAKNESSES..ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK ! ! !

  55. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

    TEAM SPEED KILLS ! ! ! USE IT ! ! !

  56. Keimosabe Says:

When are NFL gms gonna wake up and realize it all starts in the trenches, if you can’t give your rbs a hole to run through or your QB time to throw the ball I don’t care who you have playing, same goes on the defensive side , corners and safeties can’t be the ones making plays for you, our pass rush all but vanished last night, horrible game planning IMHO. I love the bucs and always will, but if we hadn’t brought Brady into town to win that trophy, licht would have been packing bags already

  57. MelvinJunior Says:

A “talent like White!?” LoL, Steelers Fan. I never liked the draft-pick, but I’m not a hater… I just don’t know WHAT you people (who act like he’s like some future HOF’er, stud RB), are seeing??? I don’t agree with the ‘move’ at all, but IF, the Bucs front office and coaching staff are dead set content on being a “running/run-first” type of team, then they just need to go ahead and trade for Jonathan Taylor ASAP. Because, THIS is just getting to be soooo frustrating and hard to watch, trying continuously, to place a square peg into a round hole here… It Makes NO Sense. Others, on here, have said, it’s like banging your head into a WALL. The same WALL. Over and over, again and again. When, you don’t have the personnel to do what you WANT and when it is obvious to literally EVERYONE, that it’s not working and NOT going to work… Then, you MUST adjust/make changes. Period. It’s NOT Working. And, I didn’t like the decision to just ‘give-up’ like they did at the end of the game, either. I honestly, do not understand the thinking there with that, at ALL!?

  58. Jeff Says:

Licht deserves much of the blame too. Nice guy from all accounts but he’s had plenty of time to build a running back room and he hasn’t. The league Is reverting back ro a running league so it’s important to have that balance. I think the 2 good years of Brady bought him a reprieve but this years draft class has done zilch. Time for a fresh change

  59. optimisticbucsfan Says:

Time for Licht and Co to clean out their offices.

Need some FRESH ideas and eyes. Licht has massive drafting issues.

  60. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

I imagine White is replaying his rushes in his head and imagining he’s been running wild every game. They should rip that #1 off his jersey that his ego told him to get sewn on and replace it with a fraction if the league would allow it. He’s not a halfback, he’s a half of a back.

  61. Jack Sparrow Says:

Brady must be laughing loud last night.. probably telling his friends, “see what I have to deal last year. Same game plan, no protection and a lousy RB.””” LOL!!!

  62. 1#bucsfan Says:

For a second there I thought I was the only one seeing RW1 not have any holes to run through and being hit behind the LOS. It isn’t just me JOE but also there was a lot of dancing too. Still it’s not a good game plan to try n run it down there throats when it’s not working. We also have a top WR Duo in the league get them the ball. ME13 has 1 bad game and y’all calling him washed up. He’s human Brady has had bad games same with rice and every great player. Not like he couldn’t get open he just dropped several passes. He hasn’t lost a step just 1 bad game. Only 3 ketches for CG14 that’s unacceptable. Gotta get the ball to your playmakers. Also I hope y’all saw ME13 one handed ketch with a DB on him like a blanket. That shows he’s not washed up.

  63. Eckwood Says:

Trade JTS, both Whites and 5 th to Indy for Taylor ……… If Indy doesn’t take it then you know you’re blinded by NOTHING SPECIAL !! Should be very workable Cap wise …….Indy gets to try their hand at with two top 15 picks and a depth pass catching back .

  64. Proudbucsfan Says:

Sneak Vaughn is an Arians running back and he has decent hands out of the backfield. Todd Blows is to stubborn and pig headed to use him. I think he’s a lot better than white. He hits the hole hard and keeps his feet going.

  65. Bucs'n'Bucks Says:

Unfortunately, it’s going to have to be ” pass first to set up the run.” No team has respect for our running game. Why does everyone but Bowles and Canales know this? Being bullheaded doesn’t win anything.

  66. orlbucfan Says:

It’s the usual bunch of weirdos-I’ve-never-seen-before on here. NE Fan mercifully spilts, and now we’re ‘graced’ with Steelers fan and that whopper, aubpierce. Where did these two jokes come from? Where are the genuine Bucs fans? So much for 21st century tech. Every yahoo in the planet can get their few minutes of loudmouth exposure, and waste time for the rest of us. Now back to the actual real world. Bucs play Aints this Sunday in NOLA. And guess what? They’ll win and go to 3-1. Then what? We’re gonna hear the usual BS of how the NFC South is a wussy division. 🤪

  67. Tony Says:

Any of us could’ve run the ball better than they did.

  68. orlbucfan Says:

    It’s splits. Typo alert.

  69. orlbucfan Says:

Sure, peewee football could have run a better game plan than this constant up-the-middle crap. It’s always on first down. Puh-lease, is there any way we can become more UNPREDICTABLE on first down? Leftwich/Arians did the same da## sh##. We’ve got a roster of talented players. This sure ain’t the 1980s. Where are the sweeps and screens? If White can’t run it, he’s already proven he can catch it! This is on Canales and Bowles.

  70. Tony Says:

Not sure if even Bo Jackson or Barry Sanders would’ve even had much success back there either. That’s why I always tell people that they should stop trading up in the draft & stop trading away their picks & if anything trade down & get more picks. Help build the team & build depth, too!

  71. MelvinJunior Says:

Who’s the “TWO Top-15 Picks” you’re talking about, Eckhead!?:/ And, that is a ridiculously, STUPID mock trade proposal. NOBODY is making that trade. Except for INDY… In a heartbeat.

  72. Sacker58 Says:

Set white on the bench until he figures it out.Hit the hole, put your head up in there .

  73. gp Says:

I thought Canales said he was going to try to put his skill players ‘In position to succeed”?
Running White “up the gut” through the interior of our O-line (our weakest link) and into the strength of the Eagles D-line, doesn’t sound like he was ‘set up to succeed’.
More like he was set up to fail.
Doesn’t matter how good of a running back he is, he can’t run through walls.

Add to that the predictable nature of our play calls and sets, and the Eagles had all the advantage. It’s actually a bit amazing that he had any positive yards at all.

  74. Eckwood Says:

@ Melvin …. JTS was near the end of round one but was a top 15 projection , he sat out a few games at Washington ( signs signs ) and that knocked him back a bit , Diva was # 5 and White was a third rd er ,,,, the 5 th is needed to entice getting JTS and Diva gone off Bucs the Cap . I Doubt Indy would make that trade but if they did the Bucs are a better team w a much better effort outlook . Not a ridiculous suggestion at all and certainly not a ridiculous Mock trade . I assure you that is a winner for the Bucs …….. JTS and White are not part of a winning future and we will see if the Bucs get a 2 nd for the two of them , that’s what Taylor is easily worth . Thanks For the Feedback but I think it’s a winner for the Bucs that Licht would have a hard time admitting.

  75. steele Says:

Only now has Joe allowed himself to speak out. I’ve said from the get go, over and over, that Rachaad is a slo-mo strider with no explosiveness, who minces and needs time and yards to get going. Not a power back, not a feature back. Just a marginal receiving back who needs a lot of open field and plays favoring his slow long-striding. And as RumDude nailed it above, Rachaad has always been Lenny-like in the way he tip toes and gets taken down.

Meanwhile, the Eagles showed how it’s done with explosive and relentless north-south guys who blow through the gaps, and just go. There is no one on the Bucs roster who is a that kind of back. If Rah Rah Canales really wants something like his old Seahawks offense, he badly needs one.
