“Scramble And Do Those Things”

September 22nd, 2023

Baker Mayfield bailed out his offensive line (Matt Feiler) Sunday against the Bears.

Yes, the still-jelling Bucs’ offensive line has been solid this season. It’s helped to have a quarterback who isn’t only relying on releasing the ball quickly.

Hey Joe, was that a backhanded shot at Tom Brady? No, but sort of.

Brady was a master at getting the ball out fast and smart. The goal for the Bucs this season is to average 2.7 seconds from snap to throw. Brady crushed that mark last season, but Baker Mayfield is on track for that 2023 goal.

That kind of speed makes the offensive linemen feel good about the guy behind them, playcaller Dave Canales explained today.

“They feel more confident and comfortable to be able to set and be aggressive on these defensive linemen as they trust that Baker’s going to make a quick decision, get the ball out, scramble and do those things,” Canales said. “Yeah, I’m very, very excited about what [the offensive line is] doing.”

Frankly, Joe wants to see better pass blocking. It’s been good, but it can improve. Mayfield has bailed out the line too many times with nifty scrambles. See the photo above; it was quite an escape act by Mayfield.

Against the Eagles’ fierce pass rush on Monday, Mayfield might have to preserve his body and eat a sack or two and live for the next play. Scrambling as often as he has might not be the best call.

As for the offensive line, they certainly have a ton of confidence in Mayfield. Tristan Wirfs went there yesterday when he spoke of “no lollygagging” by his QB.

People can whine and complain about Luke, but watching tape, the guy who stands out as an issue is Matt Feiler. He’s not been very good this year, sort of makes me wonder when they’ll make a change to Stennie. He is playing a different position, so I’m sure that accounts for a lot of the complete whiffs he’s had at guard, but he has stood out to me as the weak link. Hopefully he can quickly improve and not stand out on Monday nights broadcast.

  2. Marine Buc Says:

The Bucs have to improve their run game if they are going to succeed against upper echelon teams like the Eagles. The play-action passes won’t work very well if our run game is weak.

Philly has two CBs and safety on the injury report. I hope this helps the Bucs offense to make a few big plays Monday night.

Strong defense, solid run game and a few big plays from the pass game is how the Bucs will win against the Eagles…

  3. Buccos Says:

We beat them last time. It’s not like they are Super Bowl champs. And watching their coach cry like a baby before the Super Bowl started wasn’t exactly confidence inspiring

  4. Jack Clark Says:

Tom Brady couldn’t scramble or throw on the run to save his life but that didn’t stop him for winning 7 super bowls. I hope our offensive line continues to get better so Baker Mayfield won’t have to run for his life to win games

  5. Since76 Says:

The biggest problem I see with pass blocking seems to be a edge rusher is free on a lot of pass plays. No blocker assigned to them. Wasn’t as bad in game 2. But was still happening. Don’t know if they think Baker is shifty enough to avoid it. Or just bad scheming. With run blocking our line doesn’t seem to have enough power to open big holes 75 % of the time. Hopefully they peak mid season.

As a counselor Dan is a pretty easy read. First he is a bed wetter. No friends because he is a bed wetter. Low self esteem because he is a bed wetter. His standard pessimistic m.o is because he is a bed wetter. Sees no optimism in life because he is bed wetter. Needs to crow look at me because he is a bed wetter.
Don’t bash Dan, Please feel sorry for him. He is a bed wetter.

Personally, I can’t stand the Eagles. So I hope we beat them.

  17. Mike C Says:

Bonzai…..you do realize how funny it is that you screwed up calling out Joe on his screw up?

  18. Craig Says:

It is all well and good, so far.

Baker has a lot known about his quick thinking, and it is mostly bad.

Maybe Canales has changed the old Baker into something else, but what happens when the werewolf spell wears off? He has made horrid decisions for almost his entire career, that is why he has so many interceptions.

I really do hope he has changed all the way through, but others have wanted to hope that too, and Baker ended up here for a $4 million one year contract.

  19. BakerFan Says:

I will take that bet Big Mouth Dan, that Eagles will not be up 34-0 at halftime. Let’s figure out how to make this happen.

  20. aleyz2020 Says:

I heard they re-activated Ronde’ just or this game!

  21. Crickett Baker Says:

I would take Dan’s bet in a heartbeat, but knowing him, he would not show up to pay me. At least it would put him in hiding for a while. It may be worth it.

  22. stpetebucfan Says:

There is more than one way to get the job done. I think it was Duane who made a great point about comparing players…it’s not respectful to the players.

There is more than one way to get the job done!

Which QB would you take for your team…Tom Brady in his prime, or Patrick Mahomes in his prime. They are both winners and incredibly talented but clearely they get the job done in different ways.

Baker has his way of getting er done. He was able to get er done before he arrived but he sabotaged himself by playing too aggressively, not knowing when to hold em and when to fold em. He seems to have figured that out now,

So in terms of “style” Baker is more of a blend…good arm, not Brady’s, good scrambler, not Mahomes…but a nice combination of those two skill sets that makes him Baker Mayfield!

The “other” QB on the Bucs Kyle Trask also showed the ability to get the job done as well again though with a totally different style. Personally I love Baker but I do not fear if Kyle has to come in. The Bucs may be in the best of all worlds.

Just build a great team around either of these two QB’s. It doesn’t take a “superstar” QB to reach the SB…but minus one it does take a great team and super D. The Bucs did that their first SB they can do it again!

The OL will be fine. Our problem is plan 1. His retro rockets are a dud. White is a lollygagger.

  24. Rayjay1122 Says:

I think I know Dan, he married my Wife’s former best friend and they quit speaking because Dan was such a hole. He was also a die hard Eagles fan. It’s gotta be the same a hole.

  25. Rayjay1122 Says:

I knew it was you, how ya been A hole?

  26. Rayjay1122 Says:

    Go back to Flagler Dan.

  27. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

  28. HC Grover Says:

The Filthys are scared to death of our Bucs I tell ya. They are shakin in their shoes.

  29. geno711 Says:

    Dan:

You are out here predicting like you got a crystal ball.

Remember those first two Bucs games? You were saying the same stuff.
And look how that turned out.

It’s like you’re the weatherman who can’t get the forecast right. Sooner or later, you will get one right and brag about it.

That is why you remind of Cyril Figgis from Archer. Always trying to be something but just awkward and insecure.

  30. HC Grover Says:

Nahhh Baker is the new Billy Kilmer.

  31. BillyBucco Says:

Dan who is your favorite team?
Do you even have one, or do you get your kicks out of dumb posts.
Oh my the old Im doing your wife nonsense.
    What a child.

  32. David Says:

Let’s hope the honeymoon won’t be over for Baker. Eventually Baker will have to stand in pocket like a real qb and throw as the good defenses will adjust to him and Bucs new offensive system after two games. Well, that is when real Baker will show his ugly face throwing picks.

  33. Wild Bill Says:

Haha. At least Dan provides comic relief. Sorry Dan. That’s not really a compliment.

  34. Wild Bill Says:

I was very dubious about Baker. But he has played hard and made some really good plays. I worry that he takes too much risk of injury trying to extend plays. Better to throw some away and live to play the rest of the game. We have gone from a qb last season who threw the ball away too early too often, to a guy trying to prove himself worthy at the risk of injury. Sometimes the smart thing is to throw the ball away and avoid injury. Other than the risks he gas taken I think has shown good movement and adjustment . He just needs to throw a few into the front row seats and survive a long season. As much as I think Trask has future he just wasn’t given much prep his first 2 years.

  35. Mike C Says:

So where at dan? That’s what I thought little B

    Yep, sure do 😉

    Big fingers. Tiny keyboard. Sigh.

  37. Jeffbuc Says:

You guys do know that baker is going to have a bad game. Every quarterback does. He is going to throw a couple of dumb interceptions. Brady, Rodgers, Mahomes, burrow, every qb is going to have a bad game or 2 every year. But if he strings together 2-3 great games in between I’m good with that. We finish 11-6 if he stays within himself and keeps playing like he is even with knowing he is going to have those 2-3 bad games this year. As long as it never gets to the Winston point where you just have to laugh and be like he really just through another pick his 3rd before halftime. I have only seen one ball I think it was the very first pass last week where I was like what the hell was he looking at there. Everything else has been a big change I haven’t seen in tampa ever. Throwing to wide open receivers. For the first time since I can remember every throw doesn’t have to be perfect because of such tight coverage. First year you can really say that. Even with Brady everything had to be perfect just to complete a pass. So I think so far the new offensive coordinator is looking like a great hire.

  38. Buccos Says:

Hey Joe… are there any tickets left for the game or did the Philly fans buy them all up?

  39. garro Says:

“Frankly, Joe wants to see better pass blocking. It’s been good, but it can improve. Mayfield has bailed out the line too many times with nifty scrambles.”

    Nailed it Joe!

All hands on deck me hardys …said in my best pirate voice… Can’t expect him to continue to do the circus escapes, and scrambles… Ala Captain Jack. LOL

Despite Canales coach speak approval. And frankly BS.

O linemen hate when they don’t know where the QB is behind them, or where the running back is going to go. You simply can’t set up your block and end up holding.

This zone run blocking scheme being a bit of an exception. Backs just read linemen’s position and blocks many times. But it hacks these guys off when they make a good block and it turns into a loss when the guy goes running the wrong way. QB, RB, Etc.

    Go Bucs!

  40. John says Says:

Why is it everyone give Baker crap for turnovers? Josh Allen leads the league in turnovers the past 5 seasons and has continued that trend this season. If Allen dont lead in turnovers so far this season he will by the end of the season or maybe even after this week. He was drafted by the Browns that was 1-31 the 2 season before they drafted him, had 4 different OCs, 3 different HCs just with the Clowns and they are a bunch of Clowns. He basically played 500 ball the 1st two seasons then help them win their 1st playoff game in 26 years his 3rd season.

  41. Mark hardt Says:

You look at the 3 surprise QB,s this year Love, Baker, and Howell… They all sat first. Brady and Mahomes sat a year at least. I think the NFL is ruining kids like Fields by playing them too soon.
