Eagles 25, Buccaneers 11

September 25th, 2023

Don’t blame Mike.

There are three undefeated football teams in the National Football League through three weeks of play.

The Bucs aren’t one of them.

Tampa Bay was humiliated tonight on the turf of The Licht House tonight by an Eagles team (3-0) that was better in the trenches and playing harder, tougher and smarter.

The vaunted Bucs defense was gutted and gashed  — and injured.

No. 1 cornerback Carlton Davis already was out with a bad toe and No. 2 Jamel Dean left this game with an injured shoulder.

Devin White appeared to aggravate his bad groin, too, as he pulled up nearly lame after an interception and jogged out of bounds.

The Bucs allowed nearly 500 yards and simply couldn’t stop the Eagles after a Mike Evans touchdown cut the lead to 14 rather early in the fourth quarter. The Bucs never got the ball back. Philadelphia closed the game with a 15-play drive that ended with a victory formation.

The Bucs, as expected, tried to establish the run and simply didn’t have the horses to get it done — in the backfield and on the offensive line.

It was ugly. And nothing was uglier than the Bucs calling a run up the gut on their half yard line for a safety that really put the game away.

Joe didn’t learn too much about the Bucs tonight, as Joe didn’t think the Bucs were up for this heavyweight fight. At 2-1, the Bucs are tied for the NFC South lead with the Saints up next on Sunday; that’s the only thing that will help Joe sleep tonight.

Kudos to Mike Evans for a sick one-handed catch for the Bucs’ lone touchdown.

The score doesn’t really show how thoroughly this team was beaten. The entire team played bad. Who gets the finger pointed at them for that

  2. Mike S Says:

    BAKER: 15-25 145 YARDS 1 TD 1 INT

THAT’S A BAKER LINE IF I EVER SAW ONE

  3. King Brutus Says:

Evans makes two early catches and it could have been 14-3 . TRULY A GAME OF INCHES

  4. ModHairKen Says:

Weaknesses exposed. Center. Guard. RB. DB (chronic).

Jamel Dean is a weak man. He is soft. I would let him sit on the bench and play nickel.

Playcalling was awful. The safety was just ridiculous.

    The run Defense was appalling.

    Special Teams were embarrassing.

Eagles were much better. I was flat out wrong.

  5. gp Says:

A prime example of good coaching
Too bad it wasn’t our coaches.

  6. Bucs13 Says:

Can’t blame the “washed” QB for this performance. Worse offensive performance since 2014. Brady was the punching bad all season because he couldn’t will the team on his 45 yeaf old QB with no running game.

  7. August 1976 Buc Says:

2nd half 15 plays -2 safety, and TD.

On the last drive the Eagles had the ball for 9:22 and ran the clock out in the 4th

That sums up this game= Butt kicking

Ok looking for 3-1 after the James bowl next week

    “Worse offensive performance since 2014”

Are you forgetting about the numerous shutouts vs the Saints and 3 points against the Panthers?

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The only food thing that I could see was our punter……4 for an average of 57.5 yards with 2 inside the 20…….
And, that was ruined by poor coverage.

  11. Voice of Truth Says:

Mike’s early drops really hurt, but it wouldn’t have been enough. Without a healthy Vea, we have no run D

They gashed us all night and Hurts had all day to throw

We are a 6 win team – we can compete with the NFC South and the bottom dwellers of each of the other divisions – thankfully we play a lot of them this year so it won’t look so bad

If we played in the NFC East or AFC Central this is a 3 win team tops

    Todd Bowles is a joke

  12. TampaBayRudy Says:

Don’t speak foolishness Joe. The Bucs, as a team, ARE up to the task. The coaching staff, on the other hand is poison. Todd Bowles is about the worst, most stubborn coach I have seen in ages. And there have been some horrendous examples. The running up the gut debacle, along with a deliberately slow-paced, predictable offense is infuriating. When the team goes up-tempo, since last season, it is dynamic. It’s painfully obvious that Todd Bowles intervenes right after every sprint and shackles the team back to the doldrums of his boring sobriety. Truly, a no risk it, and that’s it kind of guy. Someone has to drill this point home before we implode after losing the first round pick we desperately need.

  13. Trey Says:

*White gets stuffed all came up the gut*

1st down on our own 1

*let’s go up the gut with White*

  14. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist and Founder of UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Poor playcalling on both sides of the ball all night long. Especially that run call on the 1-yd line that led to the safety.

Worst play call by Canales in his young playcalling career so far.

We need to stop trying to lean on our terrible/weak running game.

Can you imagine how much worse it would have been with statue Trask under center? Thanks to Bob Hainsey’s turnstile impression, there was hardly a pocket.

  16. DS Says:

Just ain’t good enough. No edge pressure JTS should be benched. We have 0 talented RBs not the strongest oline and canales doesn’t know how to adjust when stuff ain’t clickin

  17. Kgh4life Says:

It was a bad game plan offensively. Trying to establish the run up the middle was a big mistake. The Eagles DT ‘s are just better than the Bucs interior oline and we saw the results. Canales should’ve attacked the edges and do more play action roll outs.

  18. Nprbuc Says:

Well. We wondered what we had- or didn’t have. I was hoping we could at least play them tough. Dodged bullets in first half but then got hit with cluster bombs in the 2nd. Bottom line. We have a long way to go to play with he big boys. Would be nice to win the division again but it’s not happening with what we put on the tape tonight. Damn. And I was really starting to drink the koolade.

  19. ElioT Says:

The injury firm of Davis & Dean.

What team has a more disappointing duo of starting CBs?

  20. NYbucsfan Says:

Bowles stinks I don’t care how nice he is.

  21. David Says:

I’ve been saying it for months…
This entire season is dependent on the O & D line.

The O line was sufficient the first two games but today they were absolutely manhandled in the run game. They barely got off the ball.

The D line has looked surprisingly well until today. They also were absolutely manhandled in the run game and never really got much pressure, not even when blitzing.

They did play one of the best teams in the NFL and didn’t lose by 50 (see Broncos and their savior coach, Sean Payton)
BUT they have a lot of work to do.

  22. True bucsfan Says:

Never heard of so many injuries in the third week of the season.
It’s ridiculous and they use it for an excuse if they don’t do well…

Back when I played everyone was on the injured list and everyone played through it.

    No excuses…. oh… our O-Line is terrible…..

    That is all

  23. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist and Founder of UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Our running game is horribly unproductive, so I know what we should do: devote at least %50 of our offensive plays to unproductive handoffs. Brilliant!

  24. NE Fan Says:

Last one: Bowles Ball 101. Can you say deja vue?

  25. Aaron Says:

Big gap between us and the Eagles…that’s what you get with Bowles…solid average.

  26. LVMYBUCS Says:

I will never have faith until Bowles is fired.

  27. EA Says:

Men vs Boys………looked like Colorado vs Oregon out there.

  28. Tbbucs3 Says:

Canales was awful tonight. At least when Leftwhich knew the run game wasn’t gonna work he didn’t keep trying to force it all night.

  29. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Eagles won the trenches
Bucs had some scoring opportunities in 1st half- dropped passes, missed throws
Bucs are banged up on Defense but played hard
Eagles got away with some penalties- still , they were better team
    Bucs need a RB

  30. ElioT Says:

The injury firm of Davis & Dean.

  31. T. McGee Says:

Entire season is ruined. Are we supposed to be excited when Hatfield can beat a bad team? Exactly why many of us wanted Trask – not because he was better, but because at least you could see what you had and if he developed during the year. Hatfield is a rental QB and sucked.

  32. Ben the GA Buc Says:

I might lose sleep over that run call that got a safety against us. Made me sick.

  33. CTBucs Says:

Horrific blocking on the O-line, no push. $31 million per year at cornerback, hurt on the bench. Pass rush non-existent. JTS and Shaq didn’t have a stat. We are a very young team, and will take our lumps. I’ll still take 2-1 after three games with a banged up Saints next week. Back to it, Go Bucs!

  34. Bobby Says:

I remember this same doomsday talk after the Chiefs stomped us at home the year we win the Superbowl. I’m not saying we’re Super Bowl bound but it’s just one game. I’m not ready to throw in the towel on this team and I still think we win our division.

  35. Please Says:

Felt like every game last year – the offense stalls too many times in the first half, tipping the time of possession way too early, gassing the defense by play 3 of the third quarter. And it snowballs from there.

At least this was against maybe the best team in football.

  36. Mike S Says:

LOL BAKER was 10-19 for 87 yards with 1 INT through 3 quarters.

    TRASH.

In Baker-esque fashion pulls some garbage yards after the game was in hand.

    5-6 for 59 and 1 TD

He’s not the guy. Expect more of this. Every time this team plays someone competitive Mayfield will fold like a $20 tent.

You were warned – you did not listen.

    Look at the schedule.

Get down on your knees and thank Jesus Jameis is starting next week. Maybe Bucs got a chance. Against that Saint’s D its going to be tough sledding.

  37. 757Buc’em Says:

Injury firm of Dean and Davis 😂😂😂 that’s a good one

  38. Hodad Says:

Last two games were team wins, this was a team loss. Did you all think we were going to go 17-0? Next week is the real measuring stick. The Bucs clearly aren’t in the same conversation talent wise as the Eagles. We’ve really known for some time this is an 8 win team.

  39. UKBuccaneer Says:

Don’t get too high. Don’t get too low. This was never going to be a SB challenging team. It’s a team that might compete for the division by dint of how bad the NFC south is.

Tonight was the difference between a legit contender and an also-ran. It is what it is. No need to panic and call for Trask (unless we wanna tank for a draft pick and officially write-off the next 2-3 years at least).

  40. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Mike, you clearly have some weird agenda against Baker, and didn’t watch the game … Baker didn’t lose this game for us. He wasn’t perfect, but he’s not even remotely the main reason for the loss.

Don’t understand why anyone would be on his jock tonight like you are.

  41. MiamiBuc Says:

We’re spinning our wheels. We ain’t going anywhere. It’s a .500 season. Mini Mayfield will seek greener pastures after the season and we’ll still not know what we have in Trask. I can’t believe how stupid Bowles and Joe and Ira and all the other “geniuses” are. We could have a .500 season with Trask and know what we need to draft in 2024. But, nooooo. We gotta go with Mr. Moxie. What a joke.

  42. ModHairKen Says:

All this proved is the Bucs current roster is second tier. They have a ceiling. I still could see 11 wins. But they are not in the same class as SF or Philly or KC or Buffalo or Dallas.

  43. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Also, Bucs best drive ended with a TD and 2 pt conversion with 10 minutes remaining, putting us down two scores. If we had any semblance of a passable defense, that’s plenty of time to get us back in the game.

  44. Ben the GA Buc Says:

10 minutes remaining is most definitely NOT garbage time.

  45. ElioT Says:

When you want the two highest paid lowest producing CBs in the NFL…

Look no further than Davis & Dean, LLC.

  46. UKBuccaneer Says:

Joe won’t like it, but tonight’s offense debacle was on the o-line. They were indefensibly bad.

  47. MiamiBuc Says:

Why did Bowles not use his timeouts late in the 4th? Not using them signaled to the team that he’s a quitter.

  48. Usfbuc Says:

It was a tough game against a good team. There are obvious areas for improvement. If we get a little better at play calling and adjusting and we don’t make so many mistakes this is a much closer game. The biggest flaw we have right now though is our inability to run the ball.

  49. Chris Says:

RPO was not talked about this week I guess

  50. Mike S Says:

After Mayfield threw for 3 bills against the garbage Bears you were all stomping around like Connor McGregor.

    LOL

B-B-B-But that 55 against Denver last year!! Same Denver that just gave up 70?

    LOLOLOLOLOLOL

This team will not win the South.

Not under Bowles with Baker Mayfield.

This team has NO CHANCE this year against top talent.

Yeah basically they’re the best team out of the bum squads. Just good enough to put us out of the top 5-7 picks.

We’ll see Trask at some point this year. Trask will get his reps and look good enough to compete for the job next year against a rookie QB. Bowles will be fired.

    It is inevitable.

  51. Frank Pillow Says:

We were bullied and outmuscled at every level of the organization- from the front office and coaches down to the roster. The OL is a lousy mix of lightweights who can’t run block (78 not included). 13 has the dropsies again. The DL, with the exception of 7, all took the night off. Looking at you VITA. 24 and 35 are overrated. 23 and 27 are lousy. 29 and 31 overcome by the dog feces around them.

  52. Bucs13 Says:

@Tbucs. Look it up. 2014. I know you want to blame the Brady years on everything.

  53. JTHV Says:

Canales offense got their teeth kicked in tonight.

  55. ElioT Says:

Yeah, and Big Mike sucked tonight…

Gotta own that crap, a couple catches and the game is different.

  56. Mike S Says:

Didn’t matter much anyway. Hurts saw he could handoff, let WR routes develop and win early in the game. No need for him to run much.

  61. EricTheViking Says:

Another lost season is in front of us.

Jamoist will have a field day this Sunday.

When you’re lead by a coach that didn’t earn the job by merit, and instead was handed the reigns because of immutable factors, your fate is sealed.

  62. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Yall seriously worried about Winston? Lol.

And Jordan should line up against Wirfs. I like the chances there.

  63. IrishTony Says:

Ok we were without Davis, Desmond and Vea so I’ll cut them a break. They could have gone up 7-3 in the first half but Mayfield was off on his throws. If evois healthy next week we certainly could be 3-1. The Eagles are mediocre at best. Lot of lousy football these days.

  64. Mike S Says:

Jack Clark once the bullets started flying around Baker and he took a few shots he started seeing ghosts.

MiamiBuc – exactly. But you know getting just enough wins to justify Bowles’ employment is more important than building a winner. Said this over and over. Nobody listened. Everyone jumped on the Baker bandwagon.

  65. confido75 Says:

I was hoping to see more out of Baker, but the O-line was clubbed like baby seals all night. This O-line is better at pass blocking than running for sure. Bowles needs to wake up and stop with the, “we want to be a run first team”. It ain’t happening with this crew. Play to their strengths and stop trying to force a round peg through a square hole, Bowles! You may be well liked by your players, but you suck as a HC!

  66. Mike S Says:

Irish Baker was inaccurate but nobody wants to admit that.

  67. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Before everyone trashes Baker, Evans dropped 2 first downs throws and a td, the tight end also dropped a pass that was going to be a big gainer and he had no time to pass.

  68. JTHV Says:

    Y’all people are so dumb.

Bucs Win next Sunday and are 3-1

    Vegas picked 6

    Y’all need to self-murder

    It’s Week 4

  69. Colonel Angus Says:

Bucs are still a work in progress. Beat the Saints and get into the bye at 3-1.

  70. David Says:

Why are so many trashing Baker? Do you take pride and joy in a buccaneer doing bad simply because you predicted it a couple of months ago? That’s pathetic.
I have said all along he’s not the answer and they will draft a quarterback. He is temporary, but I hope he plays all world and makes the pro bowl! I’m not going to sit here and type- See I told you, I was right! … What kind of demented way of looking at things is that?

Everyone with half of a football brain knew Baker is not the long-term answer. The Buccaneers will draft a quarterback next year. Baker was a stopgap. Starting this year & potentially next year and that’s it.

Quarterback and a center. Draft that duo next year and keep them together for a decade.

  71. pmarcello Says:

What is with all the crying and moaning. Bucs got beat by a powerful team that dominated on both sides of the line. The defense was feisty but too many guys were banged up for this one. Baker did what he could . He never had time or a pocket and a couple of passes that could have been scores were dropped early on and that is what caused them to gradually fall behind. The Eagles were running and catching everything but a cold. Bucs backs were too slow and couldn’t break tackles. The Baker bashers are out tonight too. Hey chumps STFU. We don’t need to hear your cheap BS. Not time to panic. After all it i omly September. The fake news pundits love to schill for the early glamour teams in September and October. It matters how you play in November and december. The Bucs will get better. Baker will be fine. He played well considering he didn’t get much help. He is the man trolls wether you like it or not.One INT and one loss and you stinking trolls are ready to make him walk the plank. Go back to your mothers basements and trouble us no more stupid fools.

  72. Cobraboy Says:

    Meat grinder.

Gotts have a memory like a goldfish (a Ted Lasso-ism.)

    Move on to the Aints.

  73. Rod Munch Says:

Only an idiot coach like Bowles would decide they need to ‘establish the run’ vs the NFL’s best run defense.

It’s stupid, ultra-conservative coaching like that, that proves why he should have never had gotten the job.

I mean seriously, how stupid do you have to be to say, ‘lets take our biggest weakness and plot it against our opponents biggest strength’.

    It’s pure idiocy.

  74. Gman Says:

Most of us thought we would be 1-2 at this point. We looked bad because we aren’t that good. Only fools thought we would be. This is what 7-10 looks like kids.

  75. Steelers fan Says:

Thier is no weird agenda against Baker. Baker is what he is and he IS NOT ‘IT’ PERIOD!!!

Trask should play the rest of the season and thats a no brainer. Why are you fooling around with baker? If its to tank then ok i understand.

  76. Mike S Says:

    pmarcello

HE WAS 10-19 87 YARDS 1 INT THROUGH 3 QUARTERS

JUST SO YOU KNOW THAT’S NOT GOOD

We’re going to be here all year. Every time he sh!ts the bed we’re going to let you know until he’s run out of Tampa which will happen.

  77. TonySoprano Says:

I just don’t get it. Every casual fan could see the interior of the Eagles dline is its strength and far outmatches the Bucs interior oline. So what does Canales do? He runs right at them all game, more so than he has done all season. I just don’t get it.

  78. LANshark Says:

IF Evans and the TE make their catches, Baker’s over 250 yards, with another TD. And those ball’s were right in their hands. Trask the statue would have been buried under the pass rush. Face it – the O-Line got owned, and so did the D-line. This failure is on them, and receivers who can’t/won’t catch. And I LOVE that all of you guys bitching about him running too much last week are now bitching that he didn’t run it this week. SMH

  79. UKBuccaneer Says:

I’m all for listening to anyone who can give a plausible reason why Trask would have been a better bet than Mayfield tonight.

Would his inferior mobility have been a bonus facing the eagles ferocious D-line? Would his very presence have opened up truck-sized holes for White to scamper through? Would he have improved Mike’s hands?

  80. Rod Munch Says:

    ———–

Remember, Canales was the hand picked selection of Bowles (his 11th pick), brought here to do what he was told. Bowles is the type of moron headcoach who would say we need to attack the Eagles up the middle because they’ll never expect it…

When I say they’re the leagues best run defense, I mean that literally, as in they were coming into the game the #1 run defense.

  81. Mike S Says:

Steelers fan Joe and Ira have been selling them Baker for months and they bought in.

Baker looks great against the cupcakes – always has – but he’s not the guy who is going to get you to the promised land. He’s fool’s gold.

This offensive scheme is designed to be a run-first short passing ball control offense. Its not designed to score 30 PPG even when there is 400 yards of offense. Its designed to keep the defense off the field and protect the ball.

Its the Bowles game strategy and when the Bucs play teams like Philly they’ll get rolled like we saw tonight.

  82. David Says:

    Joe,
I did not see any takes on Baker’s performance. Do you still think somehow he is the most loved player in the locker room after defeating a garbage Chicago team ?
The score doesn’t reflect how bad of loss was this.
You knew Baker’s ugly head had shown up when he misses the wide open Thompkins for a TD. The game was lost when Baker threw a pick in his own side of the field with
score of 10-3 with 2:34 minutes left in 1st half. Bucs defense were on the field almost the entire game. BAKER has qb rating of 45% before the fourth qtr. 52% completions @ 87 yards one interception. He padded his stats at the end of the game with Eagles playing soft defense and had won the game by then.

Bake is one of the worst qb’s under pressure and it showed tonight slow throwing the ball.

Garbage Baker & Toilet Bowls = Another wasted season.

  83. Steelers fan Says:

“I’m all for listening to anyone who can give a plausible reason why Trask would have been a better bet than Mayfield tonight.”

Uhm… Trask proved why in the preseaon -did you not watch the games?

They “hid” baker Baker so you didnt see how bad he really is.

The only reason and ive thought about this alot..They have to be tanking theres no logical explanation other than tanking to not start your young franchise QB over this bum.

  84. Mike S Says:

Steelers fan they want to start a has-been at QB over a SEC/FL record holder who is a prototype.

Its maddening. I’ve been boiling in my own stew over it for months.

Bowles is DESTROYING this franchise. Yet nobody here can see that the emperor has no clothes. Just me and maybe a few others that don’t repeat the company line. I’m sorry you can’t shove any dog doo under my nose and call it filet mignon.

  85. JTHV Says:

Y’all bitches write essays on a comment board

    Get a grip

  86. Mike S Says:

    Baker is trash

  87. Duane in Sanford Says:

Its a tough home loss against the NFC Champs. They gotta get up for the Saints on Sunday. The Oline is a work in progress, and had it handed to them by some of the best in the league. Not gonna blame Bowles for the walking wounded on the defensive side of the ball. When you cut them loose or dont resign them, it will be a clear enough message. If they are banged up and unable to go by week 3, AND they saw little action in the preseason, availability is the real question.

  88. 1#bucsfan Says:

I expect better from ME13. To many dropped passes deff not like him. The defense holds up if they didn’t play the whole game. I know Joe their pros but they were out there way way to long. Too many snaps. They’re humans and they got wore down cause the offense did nothing at all. Between dropped passes no running lanes for the backs and baker didn’t have much time then ST besides the punter playing like trask just a bad all around game. This loss is deff on everyone.

  89. Nick Says:

Joe, I have read every article since the bucs lost, I think you may have had a couple too many big storm beers tonight (understandably). Is anyone editing or even reviewing these?

  90. TB Bolts Says:

While this was collectively an ugly game… cant help but wonder what a 6’5 kyle trask could’ve done in those moments baker was getting pushed into the pocket unable to find a target in time because he’s too small. Trask faced pressure in the SEC and set the florida record for passing yards in a season. He would find evans and godwin. They need to give the kid a chance already. They owe baker nothing and he should be happy with a place on a team after having the most picks in the last few seasons. This was his game to show who he was (at home) and guess what… no magic. Evans catch over the middle saved mayfields night. Trask may not be a mobile little scrambler but we saw what good that did bake tonight. He has a feel for pressure and can make accurate throws. 6’5 and good vision. PUT HIM IN. Baker is old shoes.

  91. TB Bolts Says:

Whats the main thing a QB needs? Vision. Put in the 6’5 guy who carved up the SEC. Baker can’t see. Was there pressure? Yes. Was there a window where he could have found a receiver he had the height/ vision? Also yes. We could have competed with the Eagles. Instead we saw what happens when the defense can’t pick up bakers slack.

  92. Rob Says:

Nobody expected the Bucs to stay with the Eagles. This game did prove that the Bucs need to rebuild both lines. The offensive line is weak at 3 position LG, C, and RT. They need to draft some nasty offensive lineman. Look for a LT and C. Move Wirfs to RT. Haisney is to soft. He’s a backup at best. Mauch is out of position and needs to move to LG. He’s not strong enough yet. Goedeke needs to move to RG.

What really disturbed me about the pass rush is that I saw a pass rusher being stonewalled with one punch by an O lineman. who had dropped back to protect Hurts. And at that point the rusher basically was done… was “no mas”. It was as if he was saying “that is all I have, so let’s dance”. And two or three seconds later, Hurts gets a pass down field. Wow. That kind of effort is never goling to succeed.
