Different Journeys; Same Totals

Baker Mayfield

Hey, Baker Mayfield and America’s Backup, Jameis Winston, have plenty in common!

And it’s not just being a No. 1 overall draft pick last decade.

Each has racked up 34 victories as a starting NFL quarterback. Mayfield’s total includes a playoff game; Winston hasn’t started a playoff game.

The tie is likely to be broken Sunday. Jameis is 34-46 in his career; Mayfield is 34-40. They’ll square off when the Bucs face the Saints in New Orleans.

They’ve got a ton more in common, too.

Jameis has a 61.3 career completion percentage. Mayfield is at 61.6 (including playoffs). Each guy is mobile but not among the ranks of dangerous runners. Mayfield has thrown 110 touchdowns versus 66 interceptions. Jameis has 139 touchdowns against 96 picks. Each is fighting for his NFL life. Each is earning $4 million this season, though Mayfield has a load of attainable incentives that could double that total.

No. 1 overall pick quarterbacks like Mayfield and Jameis are a fascinating bunch, along with those QBs taken No. 2 or No. 3. They illustrate why tanking to draft a franchise QB is a massive gamble.

None of those guys are guarantees, and they run the gamut of performance on and off the field. And sometimes they change teams to play their best ball.

The Matthew Stafford-Jared Goff trade is an intriguging example. So is the Michael Vick experience and the Alex Smith story. A top pick’s glory doesn’t always last long, either, despite fans being quick to say, “you can plug that guy in for the next 15 years.” See Cam Newton and Andrew Luck. Of course, there’s a list of all-out busts, as well.

Mayfield is on his fourth opportunity, a rarity among top picks.

In some ways, Sunday is a huge game for each quarterback. Jameis could make the league think he’s starting caliber again. Mayfield could lead Team Glazer into a long bye week thinking about Mayfield being their next franchise quarterback.

If Mayfield gets shown up by Winston…..back to collapse for a draft pick.

  2. Matt Says:

Well they both aren’t good enough to be QB1

    Solid backups though

  3. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Kyle Trask is the future of this franchise.

  4. D-Rome Says:

If the Aints believed in Jameis Winston they would not have signed Derek Carr in the off season.

  5. KC Buc Says:

I’m still salty that we were robbed of Michael Vick in his prime years. Sure he played for a rival and his passing wasn’t all that great, but man he was must-see entertainment with his legs on the field.

I think it’s interesting a lot of those mid 2010s RND 1 QBs really struggled at a time where there were a lot of older experienced QBs dominating the league. I would think the average QB play today is of a lower quality compared to say 2015. Easier for a young RND 1 QB to break into the top 15 QBs today or for previously “weaker” QBs like Geno, Baker, Goff to get 2nd/3rd chances.

  6. Jack Clark Says:

Did Todd Bowles fix the run blocking yet?

  7. DBS Says:

And here comes the Trask fan club praying.

  8. Marine Buc Says:

96 INTs… That is a ton of picks.

I still find it hilarious that the first throw Winston had as a Buc was intercepted and returned for a pick 6.

The final throw Winston had as a Buc was intercepted and returned for a pick 6.

That is crazy and totally symbolic of Winston’s time in Tampa.

    What a ride…

  9. SlyPirate Says:

Winston was NEVER invited to Nissan’s Heisman House. That’s gotta sting.

  10. Trask To The Future Says:

    Trask starting is in inevitable.

The first throw Winston had as a Buc was intercepted and returned for a pick 6.

    ^^^^^^

OMG! We can all still see the play! Winston drops back (so exciting), looks left, throws the ball to the sideline (never looking at the CB), pick six.

Wah wah. Brutal! Little did we know it was foreshadowing of things to come.

  12. Tbbucs3 Says:

Amazing to see nearly 5 years later Jameis still lives rent free in the pathetic heads of these loser gator trolls

Kyle Trask is the future of this franchise
Some stars will have to align for this to end up being the case.
    1. Baker gets hurt and gives Trask the opportunity to take over.
    2. Baker does well enough to keep the job and Trask is willing to stay with the team and not look for an opportunity elsewhere. Ie; Wait his turn.
I think overall, Baker was the better choice for the starting quarterback position right now. He is probably better suited for this scheme, and also to handle the condition of an offensive line that still needs to jell.
If Trask ever gets a chance to quarterback this team, I hope that management and fans have the patience to allow him a year to grow. I’m impressed so far with Baker’s ability as a game manager but I think Trask has a higher ceiling and would love to see what he could do.

  14. Wild Bill Says:

My take after three games is Baker has the edge over Trask because he is a better runner. Given the Bucs o line inconsistency I think Baker is the better choice. BUTT, Baker may very well get injured while running for his life. He honestly wants to be a hero but it’s a very long season and the often he runs the greater the chance of injury. To survive a 17 game season Baker needs to safely throw the ball away when the blocking breaks down. As for Trask he may be a better pocket passer. Or not! Who the he’ll knows.

  15. HC Grover Says:

A loss to the Stainks and there is no amout of lipstick to put on the Pig.

  16. Buc50 Says:

Jameis threw a pick 6 in his first pass as a Buc and his last pass as a Buc.

  17. mark2001 Says:

A ride Marine? Yeah… like a Halloween horror funhouse ride….

  18. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

When Trask gets his real shot finally once and for all – minimum full practice week and a start with #1s then we’ll see what the real deal is.

  19. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Mayfield puts up some Mayfield numbers like 185 yards 1 TD 1 INT and the Bucs lose by 10 – the hand writing will officially be written on the wall.

  20. WyomingJoe Says:

T-R-A-S-K-L-O-D-Y-T-E-S! When will you guys stop singing that tune?

  21. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Mark and Sly

    LOL.

Watching Winston play QB for the Bucs was like playing roulette and putting all your money on one color each spin… It was either BOOM or BUST on just about every pass play.

  22. SB~LV Says:

Remember when Mike Glennon beat Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh?

  23. SB~LV Says:

I just looked up Mike Glennon and he earned 31.9 million in his NFL career and is a stock broker/ financial something in NC these days.
Nice head start on life if you don’t blow your money on bling!
Even the practice squad guys are getting a great head start in life

  24. Why Bowles? Says:

Winsten vs Mayfield is the definition of a NFL pillow fight.

  25. RSJCheapseats Says:

12 Picks. 7 busts. 1 out of the league but had a moment (Wentz). 1 guy kind of figuring it out (Goff). 1 head case but maybe he figures it out (Watson)
One HOF guy and an MVP candidate (Allen)
And one guy who might be the GOAT (Mahomes)
    What a list.

    2015
    1. Winston
    2. Mariota
    2016
    1. Goff
    2. Wentz
    26 Paxton Lynch
    2017 NFL draft
    2. Mitch Trubisky
    10 Patrick Mahomes
    12 Watson
    2018
    1. Mayfield
    2. Sam Darnold
    7. Josh Allen
    10 Josh Rosen

  26. Craig Says:

Qualifier on this match-up is the O-line.

The Saints O-line is downright awful, versus Bucs almost decent lines. Bucs will win only if Kamara is rusty and out of phase He should be).

Baker was the right QB to start this season, because the line needed him to start their learning streak.

I am still not sure Baker will finish this season for two reasons; he is fragile and will probably get hurt.

He will start to revert to his losing ways and be cast out.

  27. tickrdr Says:

One more thing they have in common:
They both have only one season apiece with a TD/INT ratio of at least 2:1!
Mayfield only one of five seasons so far.
Winston only one of eight seasons so far. ( Only a partial season at that)

    tickrdr

  28. 1#bucsfan Says:

HC joe literally just said tanking for the 1st draft pick is a huge gamble and has often NOT paid off more than it has. Stop with the tanking talks geez. How do you call yourself a fan if you root for your team to lose. YOUR NOT IF YOU DO THAT

  29. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

    Trask >> Mayfield

  30. Watch More ALL22 Before Commenting Says:

No one blames the Team that went 0-16 to earn the right to draft a college kid who is supposed to turn around a ‘team sport.’

  31. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Watch out…….

    JayMiss got LASIK

  32. David Says:

Joe thanks for detailing of two garbage qb’s stats which are the stats of two typical NFL back ups. Shame on the one who loses this game. Jameis will stay as back up and Baker will become a back up if plays bad and lose to a back up.

  33. Mike Says:

    Colts starting richardson
    Panthers starting young
    Stroud starting for Houston
So I wonder why trask isn’t starting, oh yeah bucs coach trying to keep his job, well at least one thing is for sure garbage coach , garbage QB
Maybe the coach will be put in a position where he has to play trask, and trask will save his job

  34. SB~LV Says:

If only Jamyth had OJ Howard to throw to

  35. Cleanhouse Says:

    Check yo sheet!

  36. Voice of Truth Says:

    Battle of the Busts!!!!!!

What a joke, they are both bottom rung wash outs – wasted picks

This is so ugly, it’s embarrassing

  37. Bucswin Says:

Battle of the rejects. I’ll take ours over theirs any day. GO BUCS!

  38. Trask To The Future Says:

    Trask is warming up.

  39. Robbie Says:

Trask get ready…..it’s coming to you!!!

  40. JeffreyLane77 Says:

I really don’t wanna lose to Winston.

  41. StormyInFl Says:

    Trask is warming up.”

The only thing he’s warming up is his shine box.

  42. Wild Bill Says:

I was not a Baker fan from the getgo but if he pulls out a win this week a 3/1 record looks dam good. I do think Trask has a future but two years of being held behind Brady (understandable) and two other dorks that were worthless, robbed Trask of meaningful development. So it’s Baker for now if he wins more than he loses. But Trask showed promise in preseason and if Baker keeps running and gets hurt we will quickly find out what Trask can do when the games count. I do hope Baker stays healthy and keeps wining more than he looses. This next game is huge in many ways. A long term war between the two teams, and the competition between Baker and Jamess.

  43. D Cone Says:

I can remember some pretty bands QB’s that have played for the Bucs. Where did Winston fit in there?
Five Worse. Didn’t make the list. Top Five. There he was. Dilfer made both Lists at #5 on both.

Then I checked Winston’s top five performances and most involved 5 TD’s.
I think Bucs would be better facing Carr as you just might catch Jameis on a Good Day.

Carr has been practicing and shows me that there are multiple Sub .500 QB’s with the Ego that even with a bad shoulder believes they are better than any other option on the team.

  44. stpetebucfan Says:

How many years did Rodgers sit behind Favre? 3? Did it stunt his improvement.

I think Trask may have talent. But the Trask fans here don’t even realize how much they insult TRASK when they low ball and insult MAYFIELD.

IF Mayfield sucks what does that make Trask who couldn’t beat him out. Yeah, yeah experience edge and I get that…but really would Aaron Rodgers have had that problem beating out Mayfield? Yes Rodgers is HOF and that’s an unfair extreme example but the point still stands.

IF the Bucs had seen star material they would not have felt the need to get Mayfield…and perhaps most importantly is that IF Trask was CLEARLY better than Mayfield are the Traskers saying they know more than an entire NFL staff?

  45. Cousin Eddy Says:

Joe ̴ “No. 1 overall pick quarterbacks Mayfield and Jameis illustrate why tanking to draft a franchise QB is a massive gamble.”

BINGO!!! Just look at the 5 quarterbacks taken in the 1st round in 2021. At least 3 are busts – Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Bustin Fields – and a 4th may be too – Mac Jones.

  46. TB Bolts Says:

When 4th team Baker starts gifting turnovers Trask will get his shot. The defense carried midfield the first two games but now they’re banged up as always.

  47. TB Bolts Says:

No run game is midfields worst nightmare. Teams had to account for chubb and hunt in cleveland. Pressures off now teams know bucs cant run. All eyes on mayfield and he cant carry a team. Happy feet and panicky batted balls is all we have to look forward to now.

  48. garro Says:

I will continue to give Baker the benefit of the doubt over any and all comparisons to Jaymiss. Ass hat behavior from Jaymiss aside….Unless Baker starts eating W’s on the sideline.

    Go Bucs!
