Did The Bucs Wait Too Long?

September 26th, 2023
Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield speaks.

But for a play here or there, the Bucs would have been right with the Eagles in a one-score or 10-point game.

That didn’t happen because, in part, the Bucs simply could not run the ball. At all.

Offensive coordinator Dave Canales — who makes no secret he wants to run the ball — has said he will stay disciplined and stick to the run. If things aren’t working, he’s not going to panic and go to the pass too soon.

Canales may have been too disciplined and waited too long last night. In the fourth quarter, the Bucs began moving the ball through the air.

“You know, unfortunately, we screwed ourselves,” Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield said. “We were too far behind at that point.”

Mayfield added that once the Bucs started spreading the Eagles defense out as they did in the fourth quarter, moving the ball became much easier.

“It’s tough to run on them,” Mayfield said. “Obviously, we spread them out later on and were able to get that going once we wore them down a little bit.

“But, yeah, we just got to be better early on.”

Better early on or recognize quicker what works and what doesn’t?

Joe doesn’t have a problem with a coach who wants to run — so long as he has the horses to do that effectively.

Sadly, until proven otherwise, the Bucs can’t run unless they face a Snuggly-soft defense. That ain’t the Eagles.

The Bucs have proven, elite receiver weapons. Joe doesn’t understand why it’s so sinful to use them rather than subpar talent like Rachaad White. Isn’t the name of the game to score points and win?

  1. Rod Munch Says:

The 1972 NFL coaches handbook that Bowles lives and dies by, says you win by running the ball.

Even if you can’t run the ball, and you’re facing the #1 run defense.

You still just uselessly run it up the middle, because that’s how you win games. In 1972.

  2. RuKa Says:

So… where were the adjustments we thought this coaching staff was capable of?
We run over and over and over again against a wall and did not change until all was lost…

But the big story of the night is not the underperforming offense. It is the way way way overrated defense and, specially, this so called “defensive guru” that is our Head Coach. Why is he an elite defensive mind? Over 4 seasons here his defense was good for half season, in the second half of the Super Bowl season.
Once again, why is he a Guru? Because he designs “exotic looks”, because he blitzes from strange angles? Because he drops in coverage his 350 pounds DT? What is so special about that if there are no results? If WRs and TEs spend a whole game roaming absolutely free in our backfield? If everyone runs all over our defense like they are drill cones? If our defense cannot even sniff the aftershave of the opposing QB? If we fundamentals, like racking, seem to be a deep mystery for us?

Last night we witnessed what a really good defense is: the Eagles defense. No “exotic blitzes” or “exotic looks”, just plain simple basic stuff done properly. And, most important, effective! The amount of points and yards allowed to the opposing team is the only thing that counts at the end of a game. Let’s stop fooling ourselves by this fake Guru! Enough!

  4. Defense Rules Says:

Lots of excellent articles after this game Joe. Kudos. Wish I could say the same about many of the comments. Yes we got the snot kicked out of us, to the point of embarrassment at times, but … it’s still only 1 game. Lots of mistakes were obviously made, but oftentimes those make the best learning events & motivational tools.

Fair-weather fans lambasting coaches & players should instead look at this game as a good measuring stick. But my guess is that most of them won’t; they’ll just bitch then bitch some more. Yes we’ve got a long ways to go, but we all knew we weren’t going 17-0. We just suffered our 1st loss of the season to an exceptional team that played the game we were HOPING to play. That’s all. Learn from it & move on to the next one.

  5. HC Grover Says:

Saw highlights. Beagles are bigger, stronger, and faster.

  6. tbc 1 Says:

canales was sick so leftwich filled in for play calling

  7. #99 the big fella Says:

Why the hell can’t we draft or get a elite running back? It’s time to trade for Jonathan Taylor

  8. DungyDance Says:

We lost because we tried to force running plays all night long. Take what their defense gives you, which for the Eagles is a not-so-good passing defense. But no, we dialed in a Leftwich flashback to the Pittsburgh game last year.

  9. Leopold Stotch Says:

Here is why I have little confidence in Bowles. This is what many of us have said. He’s too darn stubborn. We have arguably the best wide receiver dúo and what do we do? Run the ball. We need to pass some more.

  10. ModHairKen Says:

Canales is still developing as an OC. There will be games like this. Those can be fixed.

The Center getting pushed around. White fumbling and running timid. Those cannot be fixed. If those are the best two at their respective positions, then this will be a mediocre year.

  11. Steve-0 Says:

Except for a play or two, it would have been Miami/Denver all over again. Joe, what game were you watching? Our Bucs are 2-0 against teams with a combined record of 0-6. Keep it real.

  12. darengibo Says:

Re-sign Lenny and move White to RB 2.

Seeing White get the handoff from inside the 1 was doomed since apparently he need 3 to 5 seconds to tippy toe before moving forward

  13. LVMYBUCS Says:

I love Mike Evans but it’s time to get a younger faster replacement. The Bucs keep paying these players that are not worth the money. Love u Mike but might be time to retire or move on.

  14. MiamiBuc Says:

Yes, the Bucs stayed too long with Mayfield who stunk for three quarters – until the Eagles were up by 3 touchdowns in the 4th and went into prevent mode.

  15. LVMYBUCS Says:

Bowles will get himself fired in dew time I’m just sitting back and waiting.

  16. RagingBrisket Says:

Willfully ignoring the other side of the coin again. The oline sucks too. Ignoring that delegitimizes the analysis.

  17. Winny Testaverde Says:

Bottom 3 in the league run game and head coach who insists on running the ball early and often…regardless of the results. This ends well. “Can do” Canales will be a one & doner. I expect another manhandling of the Bucs next week in Sewer City ⚜️. Winny’s revenge may lead to another locker room dance as it’s his annual “Super Bowl”.

  18. D Cone Says:

    Offense
4 Punts, 1 Interception, 1 Fumble, 1 Field Goal, and 1 Touchdown. No a recipe for Success.
Sure there were some drops. Guys running before securing the ball. Tight end has been playing well above expectations so he dropped one. . Call it a drop but I don’t think the ball is suppose to arrive when a receiver is back pedaling and falling down in the end zone. When a receiver has both feet inside the sideline of the end zone and it’s out of his reach that is a bad pass in Godwin’s case.
Lot of bad passes and coming in high. Evans fully extends and can get one hand on it and make a great catch. That’s a bad pass and one that could put him out of play for a month. There is a reason snipers shoot from an elevated position. Brady wasn’t mobile but he was an elevated position. Throw this game out and get ready for Saints.

Defense. Goal line stand. Held Eagles to 3 Field Goals. Gave up a long TD. Defense was on the field what was an extra quarter based on time of possession. Not how it’s supposed to work.

As far as the safety? Should Baker have went Shotgun from the 1/2 Yard line?
They were in that position because of an interception on a drive where Eagles looked like they were getting another 7 so that’s a win.

Some thought Baker would Bake. Looked like Baker could Break. He might not get benched in 7 games but he might not make it 7 games at this rate either.

AJ Brown summed things up pretty well. It’s September.

  19. Hodad Says:

Get a hold of yourselfs, we lost to the defending NFC champs. They are flat out better then us. Did anyone expect us to win last night? Did you all think we’d go 17-0? If the Bears beat us like that I’d be pointing fingers too, but this was the Eagles. Hurts, against moxie Mayfield, who you got? They just have better players who have been doing it longer. Relax.

  20. WyomingJoe Says:

@MiamiBuc: You’re saying we should have gone to Trask? Get real!

  21. Scott Says:

I was hoping they would abandon the run much earlier. There is no running through that impenetrable wall. That may be one of the best D lines ever

  22. Mark hardt Says:

This loss is on the coaches. Baker excels in the hurry up spread offense. They should have gone to that after 10-3. The Eagles wanted to stop the run first thinking Baker would choke in a pass first offense. The opposite happened. If they had gone no huddle at the end of the 2nd Quarter they might have won.

  23. MiamiBuc Says:

    @Wyoming

Yes Trask beat out Mayfield in training camp and played great in preseason. We’re spinning our wheels. We ain’t going anywhere. It’s a .500 season. Mini Mayfield will seek greener pastures after the season and we’ll still not know what we have in Trask. I can’t believe how stupid Bowles and Joe and Ira and all the other “geniuses” are. We could have a .500 season with Trask and know what we need to draft in 2024. But nooooooo, we gotta go with Mr. Moxie because he ate hot dogs with a couple linemen at a Rays game. What a joke.

  24. Mike Says:

Guys, we played the Eagles last night. Defending NFC Champions and a team who basically drafted damn near half of the University of Georgia National Championship Team. Honestly, this fame was circled as one of the losses this year for me. However, I thought we were a couple of plays from being right in the game last night and we just didn’t make plays….Bad punt coverage, bad run defense (against probably one of or not the best OL in the league), Dropped balls, soft coverage and for the life of me, not sure why we would go to a 3 man front at times vs the Eagles.

I read a couple comments on another site from fans saying “2-0 frauds” were exposed. We play the Saints, Lions and Falcons (2 at home). All those are winnable games and non of those teams are the Eagles. So let’s not jump the gun just yet and go back to saying we suck.

  25. MiamiBuc Says:

Mark hardt: “Baker excels in the hurry up spread offense.”

Baker excels against easy teams and in the 4th quarter when the defense is protecting a 3 touchdown lead and in prevent.

  26. Todd Says:

Canales Just needs to wear a stupid looking flat brim hat to complete his Byron Leftwich Halloween costume. He has the play predictable calling down perfectly. His stubborn meter is running red.

Run that ball on the best run defense in the league! Over and over again!!!

    That’ll trick ‘em!

    Go Byron Canales GO!!!

  27. Leighroy Says:

Baker was missing open receivers last night. It’s frustrating to see him escape and bake up something out of nothing, and then turn around the next play to watch him bake nothing out of something.

OL got abused. I saw a few runs that Rachaad White should have done better individually, but most everything else was bc our 2 guards and center were overmatched. I like Cody Mauch, he’ll grow, but right now NDstate is no match for blue-chip UGA talent. Hainsey is a backup thrust into a starter role he’s not cut out for and this FA guy playing RG who’s not good enough for me to know his name ain’t nobody either.

  28. Since76 Says:

Canales knows what he has at QB. Baker was off target last night and obviously rattled. He is what he is. below average QB. So I understand why he was reluctant to put more on Bakers plate. Hey we can have a decent season if we can keep beating the bad teams we play. With this Oline and Qb we will not compete with the good ones.

  29. SufferingSince76 Says:

We saw last night what happens when you stick to something you can’t do. You fail. Is it that hard to understand?

  30. Thisisouryear!! Says:

Baker played well for what he was dealing with last night. No yardage at all with his running offense and very little time to throw. The lack of a running game and the persistence of trying to run it left Mayfield with 1 down to get 10 yard’s basically. He must have had 5 drops in the first half…They’re deflating. And to read idiots saying trask…give me a break.

I was at the game. They’re defensive line caved our offensive line and our defensive line no pressure on hurts. That’s your game right there. It’s certainly not Baker. White could definitely run better.

Honestly we weren’t out of this game until the second half. Our defense even though injured held up until they were gassed. When Dean went down so did our defense. I don’t feel like a lot of fans. I feel like we can play with this team. If we get healthy on defense, we’re going to be tough. I think our o-line is going to get better. We’ll see.

  31. SB~LV Says:

Hey! The better team won the Bucs had their chances and blew them.
The offense and defensive lines of the Bucs was inferior to the Eagles..

  32. BucU Says:

This was an embarrassing disaster. Bowles and Canales were pathetic. Just pathetic. It’s bad enough to have shytty players but when u add shytty coaches you get what we saw last night. WHERE WAS THE FIRE?
We are frauds. We are brittle, injury prone frauds. Sickening.

  33. Duane Says:

There was never any chance, the way the Bucs were playing and the Eagles were playing, that we were just one drive away from winning. Or two, or even three. Because it was obvious to everyone watching the game, including the two game announcers on ABC, that the score did not indicate the level of dominance that the Eagles enjoyed over the Bucs, in every single part of the game – running, passing, run defending, pass defending, and special teams too.

This was a total butt kicking, and the final score did not tell the story.

Look, if the Bucs (41 yards) ran the ball anywhere similar to how the Eagles ran the ball (201 yards), the game would not have been so lop sided. Don’t blame it on the run, or lack thereof … blame the game on the fact that the Eagles were just one helluva lot better than the Bucs were, hands down.

Now, this is just one game, and even our Super Bowl winning teams in 2002 and 2020 laid eggs in one or more games during the regular season. There is plenty to work on by everybody involved, coaches, players, all of them. They can get better and learn from this.

  34. Boss Says:

ME was 2 of 6 until garbage time in the 4th. Typical…but this time one was a TD and at least 2 were drive killers on 3rd dow. The argument could be made that little mike single handedly lost the game last night.

New strategy, avoid ME until late in the game. Target the other guys.

    #anyonebutmike

  35. Why Bowles? Says:

Yes Evan’s dropped one in the end zone but it wasn’t like it was the best pass and the defender was baring down. AJ Brown dropped one easier in the end zone than Evan’s pass. I think Mayfield at times left the pocket too early. I also think Mayfield left the pocket a few times earlier than he should have.

Those blaming White for the running game are wrong, there were no holes, his skating was in hopes of finding one.

Nothing positive from that game from coaching down, manhandled all game. Once again the punter was the MVP.

  36. Bucsfanman Says:

Yes they waited too long. We did not adjust. Try a screen or a slant once in a while. I know they’re “new-fangled” and what not, but…

BTW, White does not look like the answer at RB.

  37. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

But for a play here or there, the Bucs would have been right with the Eagles in a one-score or 10-point game. That’s the same thing the Broncos and Sean Payton said this past Sunday…lol.

Our starting CBs (when on the field) absolutely STINK. Our back ups have more pride and fire in their belly.

  38. bucnjim Says:

Todd, the conservative play calling comes straight from Bowles. He even said to a sideline reporter we’re throwing the ball around too much. This was the middle of the game!

  39. bucnjim Says:

Two turnovers and a poor punt coverage team doomed the Bucs early in the game. I was hoping for better showing from the offense, but it is the Eagles and obviously they are better. Not totally down on the Bucs after one loss because honestly we all knew they had to play a perfect game to have a chance. Plus injuries are starting to pile up unfortunately.

  40. Pewter Power Says:

There are no excuses the eagles have a new coordinator also

  41. Oxycondomns Says:

Canales started off with good play calling i thought. Baker over thew an open thompkins. Evans couldnt catch a high ball that he usually could catch and also dropped a poorly thrown td pass. Felt like it all started to unravel with the turnovers and defense spending too much time on the field

  42. Mord Says:

Here’s hoping Canales learns from this. I still think he’s going to pan out as a good OC/coach in this league, but he’s still green on the kind of experience that will inform decisions like this.

  43. BucsFanSince76 Says:

Canales is OBTUSE if he thinks this running back corps will ever be very productive, Bucs do not have the horses at RB. Sign ROJO as he is better than any back on the roster.

  44. Bucfan79 Says:

This is all on Bowles. Going up against the #1 run defense and you think you’re going to run on them with your 20th something ranked run game? And look at last season you have the greatest QB to ever play the game and arguably the best WR corp to ever take the field and what did he do? Run, run, pass, punt. That wasn’t Leftwich, that’s Bowles. Leftwich was a QB, QB’s love to throw the ball. Under BA they lit it up. Under Bowles it’s that old school defense mentality of run run run. Who else did we see that with? Ohh yeah Dungy, Chucky comes in and just ran dump pass after dump pass all the way to a SB victory. Bowles has to either change his strategy or he’s got to go.

  45. D-Rome Says:

But for a play here or there, the Bucs would have been right with the Eagles in a one-score or 10-point game.

I agree. I feel like that game came down to about 5 plays. I’m on record as saying the Bucs will only win 6 games but they are much better than I thought. The team wasn’t going to go 17-0. No team is this season. I’m optimistic about New Orleans especially since Jay-Miss is starting. He’s no Jalen Hurts.

  46. 757Buc’em Says:

The only offense who has 2 aight receivers and can’t do squat with them one has a dropsie problem the other one doesn’t even get looked at unless we need a miraculous catch for 6 yards smh

  47. StormyInfl Says:

    “MiamiBuc Says:

    @Wyoming

Yes Trask beat out Mayfield in training camp”

Based on what? Your expert opinion from a few puff pieces written during the summer? Because, unless you’re on the coaching staff, you weren’t there for all of it. Heck you didn’t see 95% of it, yet your ‘expert’ analysis says ‘Trask won that competition’? GTFO. I’m sure off the field, they had to demonstrate being able to show out in film study. Maybe those games where he looked good, he also didn’t check to the correct play more often than not? I sure as hell don’t know, but neither do you. Proof is the fact they picked Mayfield.

“We know Kyle gives us a better chance to win, but let’s start Mayfield anyway” said no coach, ever.

And if you think Trask would have fared better with an OL (especially the interior) being manhandled and zero running game with an almost ridiculous obsession with running into a brick wall, you are nuts.

  48. Arn platz Says:

I witnessed a dominant O-line and D-line of the 🦅. They are scary good. I still think the Bucs can clean it up and win most of their remaining games. This team has a few issues yes, but they have the talent.

  49. JN Says:

Bucs got slapped. Dont have the horses to compete up front with the Eagles. End of story. And they are damn lucky they didnt lose by 30.

  50. It's Corn Says:

Teams that declare they “want to run the ball” always seem to be teams that stink doing it.

Teams that do run the ball well just use that as one of their weapons, like the Eagles did last night.

If you run the ball well, you’ll have more 2nd and short or 3rd and short, and you’ll get more carries just from that. So you only get your rushing attempts up when you run the ball WELL.

And if you continue to run the ball because you want to be a running team, but you don’t run the ball well, that’s how you end up with 87 yards of offense in a half.

  51. #99 the big fella Says:

The Philadelphia Eagles general manager has really drafted well that offensive line and defensive line is scary

  52. Jeff Says:

Lol! The Mighty Eagles toyed with Bucs like a dead rat. Get ready to lose again, Bucs honks! New Orleans is going to literally smash the Bucs.

NO 27 Yucs 13 – Baker throws 3 picks in this one.

  53. LJS4th Says:

Once they went up tempo and used the shotgun they moved the ball on the Eagles but it was too late by then. It is a learning process and the coaches will get better. We need a running back that can move the pile or trade for someone fast!!!

  54. Allen Lofton Says:

Brady came to Tampa because both the offense and defense played very physically like the Eagles did last night. Light needs to find a few physical players in next year’s draft.

  55. SufferingSince76 Says:

Beat it, Dan….. I mean Jeff.

  56. Jack Clark Says:

Hey Joe, when is Todd Bowles going to fix the run blocking????

  57. Breadwinnerbob Says:

Eagles pass rush was good till we started to move the pocket where was the quick throws that work vs eagles ?? The slant with evans ? Mabey move Chris to the slot where he is a baller and put long ball palmer on the outside idk white is average at best and fumbles ways too much

  58. gp Says:

    Unprepared
    Uninspired
    Predictable
    Outcoached
    Outmatched
    Outplayed

This loss was 90% coaching, 2% injuries, 8% poor player execution.
We may as well have been giving our play calls directly to the iggles, both offense AND defense.
They knew our game so well that even if our execution was perfect, they still would have won.
This is why I have, and will continue to vote ‘no confidence’ in the coaching confidence polls.

  59. Costa Rica John Says:

That was just a good old fashioned ass whipping the Bucs took. Own up to it and move on. Next up Saints.

  60. Cobraboy Says:

I’d rather get seal-clubbed early than late.

I recall in the SB year the Bucs also laid an egg early on.

It’s one game, and I suspect lessons were learned.

Time for a memory of a goldfish, and move on to the ATM-Aints, keeping those ugly lessons in mind while forming a new game plan.

The Iggles are a damn good team, maybe the best in the NFL.

Nothing is as good or as bad as it seems.

That said, I still think Bowles is over his head.

  61. Why Bowles? Says:

Anyone that thinks a few plays here and there had blinders on last night. Eagles coach gave Bucs a freebie by not kicking the first FG and they had drops and turnovers to. Eagles did not play perfect but to give up over 200yds on the ground, I’m sorry that’s on the D and DC. That should have been a blowout. From the 1st series on the Bucs were out matched. This is a repeat of last season forcing the run when the oline is out matched. Stupid is what stupid does.

  62. orlbucfan Says:

It’s taken the Iggles a few years to build their team. They stunk up the planet for a long time. This game was a lesson to the entire Buc team including coaches. The Bucs won a SB 3 years ago, and their Division. As bad as this loss smarts, it was against the 2nd best team in the league last year. This site attracts a lot of fair-weather fans and frauds. It’s annoying to the genuine fans, but I for one, am used to it. One thing I hope Canales learns is to start being UNPREDICTABLE in his game planning and play calling. Another thing I noticed is the Iggles were doing a lot of holding which was not being flagged. Holding should no longer be penalized. It’s a joke.

  63. Baking with Canales Says:

Yikes! We had a fire in the oven last night. The good thing is that is over. Time to review and learn. No more running plays out of your end zone!!!!! Did Godwin play last night?

I remember Canales mentioning the fact that the there will be games where the run games is not working and you have pass more…..hmmm
Last night sure seem like one.

I guess plan b was not prepared prior to the game.

    On to the Big Easy….

  64. George R Says:

This reminds me of the Steeler game. The weakness was the pass defense their strength was the running game. Bucs, lets run the ball

  65. Bucsalltheway Says:

If Devin white was too injured to house a pick 6 he could have pitched it to who could…not an excuse but it rained everytime we had the ball and subsided during eagles drive. And that Don’t blame Mike Evans post was funny Joe. Evans dropped like a td, and 6 first downs to keep the sticks moving Evans even changed gloves 3 times. They knew the offense was shat that’s why they continued to force the run trying to give our defense a break. R. White is a dumb arse who hole hops on goaline never cut backed into your own end zone that was just dumb.

  66. Bucsalltheway Says:

And Mayfield pick came because it started raining that drive and the way godwin sat flat he tried to float it with no heat to make it more catchable because of the rain.

  67. Bucsalltheway Says:

Let’s not mention the bomb to evans that evans though a sack happened so he stopped running that would have sparked this team to do right. Soft azz Jamel dean is soft and Mr glass during real match ups everytime. Carlton Davis would have played better dee Delaney is a hero…Christian izien is a rookie and he looked lost a couple times especially containing hurts but he will learn. Vita is fat and get injured after dog fights in the trenches. We mailed it in about halfway through the 3rd quarter.

  68. Canabuc Says:

Game is won and lost in the trenches. They dominated both lines of scrimmage.

If White had the holes Swift did we would still be anointing him a stud running back. Part of his dancing is trying to be patient and find a hole.

Tucker who everyone seems to love who his the hole hard had run for nothing in his carries. Because there is no hole to hit.

Baker had no time to pass.
Coaching should have recognized this and designed more draws, screens and roll outs.

Also half our starting defense was playing hurt or out.

  69. Bucsalltheway Says:

Chris godwin is not an outside receiver we tried it once he failed put him in the slot he succeeds why change something that wasn’t broke I feel this team has taken a helluva lot of step backwards. We need to nab a running back anyone not named r white.

  70. SB~LV Says:

    It’s simple
    The better team won

  71. Pewter Power Says:

I love my Bucs and we all do we’re fans and we know these players well but come on guys if this was any other team in our division we’d be calling them trash.

Damn the adjustments, where are their balls. This was the niners this was cowboys bad. No fight at all. Leftwich couldn’t stop passing the ball, Canales won’t stop running. Toilet Bowles should be fired if the Glazers would do that to gruden then he definitely deserves it

  72. Bucfan Says:

I did NOT expect the Bucs to win BUT i was hoping they would play a competitive game. This was a repeat of the Dallas game last season. The team was not prepaired to play.

  73. Rjscheapseats Says:

Too much of the bad Baker last night. Still, the Bucs generated a huge turnover late in the second quarter when we were down 10-3. At the least, we should have gone into half down 10-6. Instead, Baker throws a pick and the Eagles get a field goal (a good stop by the D again) and we go in 13-3.

The Eagles took the kick and marched down and effectively ended the game.

The D was on the field way too much. The Eagles O was second in the NFL for a reason.

  74. m milligan Says:

That was quite a beatdown. Thought D played their hearts out but Eagles OL and DL completely dominated both sides of ball. If they get home field during playoffs I don’t know who’s going to beat them.
Not sure what the hell MiamiBuc is talking about unless he’s still drunk from last night. All I know is I had hoped for miracle W but am now out 1k.

  75. Bucsalltheway Says:

Oh yeah and let’s not forget r white fancy smancy spin move as the rain started that let to a fumble because he didn’t squeeze the ball high and tight during his spin. Everyone dropped passing especially evans,Thompsons and Otton on the screen pass. We collectively shat ourselves

  76. Bucsalltheway Says:

If we see them again praying we do..we will give them a better game especially if it doesn’t rain…elements screwed us when it rains your run game become your strength and we don’t have one so we became weak end of story…America knows we still can’t run the ball. Our weakness will never win us a game.

  77. larrd Says:

They should run a hurry-up series or two every first half. Even if the running game’s doing okay. Definitely, if it’s not.

  78. Warrenfb12 Says:

Fwiw if Evans catches that TD ball this was a whole different game imo.

  79. Jeffrey Becker Says:

exactly right joe, and kudos for predicting this mistake during the week, we knew they would be too slow to realize they need to throw the ball a lot against the eagles, especially with our offensive roster. bowles may be part of it too tho, remember his comments about defense being too worn down in the fourth quarter of games when we passed a lot

  80. stpetebucfan Says:

D.R. FTW! I agree with what he posted and as he said…”Lots of excellent articles after this game Joe.”

Seriously were we that surprised? The Eagles remain undefeated because at the moment they have a better team than the Bucs, on paper, on the field, and in reality.

The current iteration of the Bucs is not ready for the SB. As Gomer used to say surprise, surprise, surprise! But they are also not the turds that the preseason prognosticators had everybody believing.

The Bucs however are not that far from again being a true SB contender. Imagine the difference one player…Bijon Robinson would make for this team.

Point is the team is still remodeling and gaining experience from the OC/QB to all the young dudes now playing.

Bottom line for me is I still enjoy this team with one true FEAR.

HEALTH! If everybody was healthy this could be a good if not great team.

Sadly nothing could be further from the truth and the injuries are scary. Turf toe and groins can linger for a long long time. Hopefully Vita’s pec is not a season long nagging injury. He needs his upper body to toss those OL around like rag dolls.

My biggest disappointment was the way the D got gashed early and often on the ground. One of the millionaire DB’s was out, the other injured, the two best defenders on the team DW45 and Vita, the very heart of the D were also hampered.

I’m no longer sure of what strategy to employ for N.O. Do they take the walking wounded and the turf toe onto the field against the Saints or do they let them rest in effect giving them three weeks off with the bye? I honestly do not know.

I wouldn’t put money on Davis…I can’t imagine that the artificial turf in N.O.
is going to allow his toe to heal.

  81. Mike S Says:

LOL DON’T EVEN TRY TO PLAY THIS NARRATIVE

The only reason Baker had success in the 4th quarter is because the game was already over and the Eagles played off on a base defense.

    Baker is terrible.

Remember you demanded this. You sold this dung pile to us for SIX MONTHS. Its only beginning and its going to get worse and worse. The guy is garbage we tried to tell you.

  82. Rich Says:

The problem is not with our running backs, it is our O line,it cannot make any holes for them. As soon as they touch the ball they are hit. The greatest running backs all time would all look like failures with our O line

  83. Mike Johnson Says:

Please guys..Please..Our Bucs were simply beaten by a superior team who has an Outstanding O and D line..Period. And they showed us mercy. They could have easily added another 21 points to their score. Now, Lets heal up for the Saints. If not? we will be 2-2

  84. ScottyMack Says:

4 drops – two by Evans that were first downs (one of those to move into field goal range) and another by Evans that should have been a touchdown and also a drop by Otton who had a wall of blockers in front of him. None of those get dropped and sure, it might very well have been a different game. All that said, the Bucs have the potential to be better than the pundits thought but thinking they can hang with the top 6-8 teams in the NFL is just wishful thinking. Be happy they have a chance against most teams this year and root for your team. Otherwise, stop pretending you’re a Bucs fan.

  85. ScottyMack Says:

Mike S. Mayfield has 2 less INTs than Brady had his first season with the Bucs, less than Brady’s second year with the team and the same number as last year but Mayfield has thrown one more TD than Brady had after three games.

  86. Infomeplease Says:

The better team won yesterday. That said with 3 minutes left, the Bucs were only 2 scores down. Although, they were dominated by the Eagle trenches, they didn’t exactly get blown out score wise. Why does Todd Bowles just QUIT before the game is over?? He totally quit with 3 minutes (+time outs) on the clock!! I thought he teaches “play hard 60 minutes”!! He doesn’t coach 60 minutes, especially when he’s losing. That’s the time you have to coach harder! Play harder!! Decent teams can score twice in 3 minutes, yes it requires some luck and good clock management. It happens at least 4 or 5 times every year!!

The Bucs scored with a little over 9 minutes left. Down by 2 scores. The Bucs defense struggled to get off the field. Eagles use up about 6 minutes. TB doesn’t use time outs to save time. The Bucs get the ball back with 3 minutes! Then they lay down or did they lay down at the 9 minute mark? I don’t get this. Bad bad bad clock management and a coaching!!

NFL games are 60 minutes long. Even if you’re getting the sh!t kicked out of you, you play 60 minutes!! At least that’s what the best, well coached teams do! IMHO. Todd Bowles quiting with 9 or 3 minutes left in the game, no matter how bad you played the first 51 or 57 minutes, sets a bad example for his players! “It’s ok to quit” . Winners don’t quit. Losers do!

  87. Pryda…sec147 Says:

I don’t think halftime adjustments happened. Rachaaaad white lost this game for us. Our defense was worn out we learned that last year they need time to recover.

  88. Conte Piscatelli Says:

So my thoughts on Cannales are simple, he is a rookie play caller. He seems like a smart guy with real potential so my hope is that here early in season especially he is learning, more from the mistakes than the successes

  89. m milligan Says:

Mike S is an idiot, no QB or RB in the world could withstand or excel in that kind of sht show we saw last night. Yes, had some chances but to much Philly

  90. optimisticbucsfan Says:

REALITY BLAST – this team is average at best and probably below average in all honesty. We beat two tomato cans. The Eagles was NOT close. I don’t believe these BS articles of what COULD HAVE BEEN. We got demolished. A safety?

The o line should be ashamed. Canales was way out of his league last night.

    I’m looking at 7-10

  91. Duane in Sanford Says:

The offense is a work in progress. Its not hard to draw up or call a run play. The execution is the problem. Hoping the line gets better (they should). White is not the rb1 we are looking for. I agree that when the run game is stagnant, and we are down by more than 7, that we should strongly consider abandoning the run. Sounds like a philosophy issue that Bowles needs to figure out. The sky isnt falling.

  92. JD Still Says:

We do not have a bad team, Denver has a bad team. , they flat out quit Sunday , there is no quit in our guys , you could see guys who were hurt coming into the game who should not have been playing ,who were in pain on the sidelines ,but going right back out when the time came ,or White intercepting a pass but in such pain he could hardly run , what other Linebacker anywhere ,that hurting , would still have been playing, that kind of toughness can’t be taught , either you have it or you don’t, and our guys have it .

  93. Delg Says:

This was a terribly coached game. Sometimes you have to use the Pastor open up the run. Even I know that.

  94. Delg Says:

This was a terribly coached game. Sometimes you have to use the *pass to open up the run. Even I know that.

  95. Steelers fan Says:

What??? This is retarded. Baker you could only pass on that drive coz the d was playing soft coz the GAME WAS OVER!!! WOW

Is Baker really tryn to sell that?

  96. Mike S Says:

    I’m an idiot huh?

    Watch what happens next Sunday.

  97. #99 the big fella Says:

If you were told before the season we would be 2-1 you guys would not of believed it ..it’s one game take your wife’s panties off and Stop the bitching like little girls.

  98. #99 the big fella Says:

Yes Mike s you do sound like a idiot.. it’s one game .. we played the defending nfc champions.. let’s all jump off a bridge now..

  99. Simeon Says:

How about we use the pass to set up the run. Not the other way around.

  100. Mike S Says:

99 Baker is a FRAUD. 2 wins vs 0-6 is nothing to crow about. Bucs will get smacked in N.O. then after the break:

    Lions
    Falcons
    Bills
    Texans
    Titans
    49ers

Don’t be shocked if they go 1-6 over that span.

  101. Jimvet Says:

An awful lot of you think coaching in the nfl is easy. My goal this year was be competitive, win 9-10 games while paying the band for Tom Brady. It’s ok to be a Buc fan. I am and all of us are. But guys, when we play the 49ers we are going to have our hands full again. We don’t have the budget to trade for big names and we can’t entice free agents. This is a math problem. (For one freaking year.) the goal is to fight like dogs on these overmatched games. Who knows. One those days we play a mediocre or a have not team, now you can compare, guts, coaching, adjustments made, etc. think this is Afghanistan, we aren’t a SEAL Team like 2020 and 2021. We are a young group of soldiers who have guts and want to. We are three battles in. Watch them get better.
