Devin White Issues Mea Culpa

September 18th, 2023

Confesses regret.

In the very same calendar year that the Bucs began this season 2-0, a star Bucs linebacker spiced up some dull winter months with much-needed drama.

Bucs savior linebacker Devin White demanded a trade. Frustrated with how contract negotiations were (or weren’t) going with the Bucs (hi Mike!), White wanted out. And he sat-in mandatory minicamp.

Now it’s mid-September and the Bucs are undefeated, and White seems to have changed his tune. He took to Instagram this morning and issued a public mea culpa for even thinking of leaving Tampa Bay.

devinwhite_40: This defense is so fun to be apart of šŸ˜Œ Iā€™m stupid for trying to leave ! Young fast physical steppers šŸšŸ¤£

Well, Joe fully agrees with White’s enthusiasm here. The Bucs defense is fun to watch. Dudes, young dudes, blasting ball carriers and punishing quarterbacks.

And that is without their first-round draft pick!

So is White having so much fun he will re-sign with the Bucs agreeing to a contract that maybe gives the Bucs enough wiggleroom to also re-sign Mike Evans?

Time will tell.

Speculating here….Probaly conversations in between parts are getting better…..

  2. Fred McNeil Says:

    Greed usually wins out.
Modern athletes wouldn’t think of leaving enough crumps for anybody else.

  3. Pewter Power Says:

Yep you are but hey 100mil? Still canā€™t cover tight ends, youā€™ve gotten slow brotha

  4. SlyPirate Says:

    It’s what winning does …
Guys are riding the wave. It’s not just White. It’s Shaq, Evans, Wirfs, Vea. The players have bought in.

If (when) the Bucs beat Philly, look out! The media will be breaking down the doors at One Buc. And, FOR ONCE (finally), in the era of QB over-valuation, the roll players and defense will be getting the respect and accolades they deserve.

    Kudos, Mr. White.

  5. DS Says:

I donā€™t think he has gotten slow I just think coverage isnā€™t his game

  6. Jaybuc Says:

Speed seems to be Devin whiteā€™s game. Iā€™d be weary about giving him a long term contract because once his speed drops, and it will, he will be out of his element.

  7. HC Grover Says:

VV and Hainsey had good games but everbody talking about White.

  8. Dewey Selmon Says:

I’d like to see his attitude if we were 0-2 and the defense was getting gashed.

  9. Richard Says:

Totally agree jaybuc…he’s fast but yesterday is a very prime example of the issue…he can’t cover, he can’t come off a block and he’s an above the shoulder tackler ( ball carriers gain yds after contact) and he overpursues plays too often and is out of position too often. As I’ve said over and over, he’s an exceptional athlete, not an exceptional football player….and CERTAINLY…NOT A SAVIOR LB JOE!!!!

  10. Bobby Says:

Devin was a spy on Fields yesterday. Since Fields got zip rushing I think he did a great job. Sometimes the defensive scheme makes you appear invisible but you’re not. He did his job well.

  11. Duane Says:

Jaybuc – Devin White is only 25 years old. “Long term” in the NFL is usually 3-4 real years with options for more, not counting any BS years that only stretch out the cap hit. He’ll still be under 30. While speed is a big part of what he provides, the linebacker position is more about knowing where to be, and anticipating what offenses are doing. Which is why Lavonte David at age 33 is still going strong. He doesn’t look slow, but he damn sure looks effective and already has double digit tackles this young season.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

Bobby … ‘Devin was a spy on Fields yesterday. Since Fields got zip rushing I think he did a great job.’

I focused on him a number of times Bobby & it was very evident that’s exactly what White was doing. And since Justin Fields only got 3 yards rushing on 4 attempts, I’d say that it worked.

Although we’ve only given up 34 total points & relatively few rushing yards (108) in 2 games, we’ve given up a lot of passing yardage (497) in comparison. I guess if we prioritize stopping the run like we do, then it should probably be expected that passing yardage would be compromised somewhat. Hard to do both equally well it seems.

Fred…perhaps you could post under “MrPositive”? Or maybe more accurately under Mr Cynical.

NONE of us here have been multi millionaires! Many if not most have had to really survive some lean years and many have had to really watch things to prepare for retirement.

DW45 is making 11 million just this year!!! He want to be paid tops in the league, pride is important to athletes, that’s 20 million. If he comes up short and has to settle for 18 million do we really believe that will materially impact his or his extended family’s life fortune going forward? IE He literally does not NEED the $$$. I do not begrudge him going for them…it’s America where most peoples values center around $$$, looks, fame and power.

You can read lots of books including an excellent recent release by Arthur Brooks and Oprah Winfrey. “The Art and Science of Getting Happier”.
Happiness inhibiters….too much desire for guess what…$$$, fame, power, and looks.

I posted right after the Minny game that DW45 looked like he was having FUN for the first time since his rookie season. He found his mojo.

Again for many if not most here the NEED to get money to support family and self creates pressure that DW45 simply does not feel.

For heaven’s sake can’t we let him have fun and take him at his word. Perhaps horrid American values haven’t overwhelmed him like so many of the rest of us.

  14. BucU Says:

Glad Devin is having fun and wanting to be here.
Lavonte is a freak. He’s playing awesome too.
Too bad Kancey is a porcelain doll. He’ll come back in a week or two, get hurt again and sit for another nonth. He’s worthless to us.

  15. orlbucfan Says:

LVD is cut from the same LB/HOF cloth as Derrick Brooks. This Bucs fan is thrilled to death STILL that he finally got the SB ring he so richly deserved! He might be 33, but he’s always been one smart player from the time he was drafted and came here. Plus, he’s a class act off-field. Devon White needs to grow up.

  16. Show Me the TDs Says:

Stpete, you sound like a communist.

  17. stpetebucfan Says:

    Show Me The TD’s

Do you even know what a communist is? Do you know the difference between Communism and Socialism. Are you aware that every G7 nation including the US is a BALANCE of Capitalism and Socialism.

Do you believe love of money more than family, friends, and everything else is really happy.

You drew your conclusion I’ll draw mine. You must be a really miserable human being.

  18. stpetebucfan Says:

BTW This is not about ME. It’s about DW45, ME13 and other athletes with HUGE salaries.

Again it’s the “value” you place on the huge salary. On the fame. IMHO many of these athletes want those salaries because while they are already wealthy, salaries is the major scorecoard. Would some guys rather be judged best at their position by their peers? I think so. Are others simply show me the money. Of course.

I’m absolutely sure there are guys here with great values. Family men who perhaps like me have turned down major raises to remain in a job that made them happy.

  19. Show Me the TDs Says:

    Stpete, thanks for confirming.

  21. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

NFL players are the modern version of gladiators in the Roman empire , except the death comes from CTE 10-30 years down the road , not on game day as it did in the coliseum.
NFL players deserve every penny they earn and then some. Playing LB in the NFL is the same as getting in 10 car accidents every time they play one game. I would love to see any troll on this forum get out there and carry the ball with Devin tackling you 10 times , you would not get past the first attempt.

  22. RustyRhinos Says:

Stpete, thanks for confirming “Show Me the TDs” doesn’t know.

Good work on your self-evaluation of your offseason word choices Mr. White.
Great start to our season so far so good. Stay focused on what you can. The game in front of you.

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

“Winning cures all” as they say…

Re: His ability (or lack of) when dropping back in coverage, here’s the thing:

I know it, you know it, and so the coaches definitely know he is a liability in pass coverage. Which begs the question: WHY DO YOU KEEP DROPPING HIM BACK IN COVERAGE???

I put that on Bowles, not Devin, at this point. Yesterday he was covering DJ Moore a few times. What in the actual faq? That’s just poor scheming IMO.

  24. unbelievable Says:

@stpete- you nailed it once again.

It has also been my observation throughout life that the vast, vast majority of people who throw out words like “communist” or “socialist” (or more recently, “woke”) every time they want to insult someone, have absolutely NO idea what these words actually mean. Not a clue.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

    Unbelievable

THX! When getting compliments I always consider the source and coming from you that’s high praise.

D.R. You are of course correct and I take your point. You have more class and discipline than me. I must confess I know it’s wrong but it’s a “guilty pleasure.”
    MEA CULPA lol

BTW The Shaw quote is a great admonition, who wants to get dirty and smell.

Twain’s quote is even worse for me…”Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference.”

And has been pointed out in this very thread there are certainly those here who consider me a FOOL. LMAO

  30. BringBucsBack Says:

Unbelievable… or… why draft cover-corners just to back them off of the LOS 10 yards & play a pathetic version of zone coverage?

Any average passer, slices this defense, at least yesterday.

Wait a minute. Obscenely rich billionairess Oprah Winfrey, who lives like a British queen, co-wrote a book on how people strive too much for money, glamor and fame? LOL!

Didn’t she leave the news industry many moons ago to chase cash? To become a TV star? To have wealth beyond her imagination?

Did she type this book for free by chance? Is the book handed out at no cost at churches and Walmart?

If this book is about how too many people chase the almighty buck, well, this is, um, rich!

  34. Joe Says:

Do you believe love of money more than family, friends, and everything else is really happy.

    YES!!!

  35. Good D Says:

If the bucs keep winning and baker keeps playing good football, the bucs won’t want/be able to draft a qb. That means signing baker to a decent contract, and paying Evans and white. I think the bucs have a strong group of young lbs and probably can’t afford to sign white to the contract he understandably wants.

  36. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

Why preach about communist utopia if you’re going to get mad about people noticing? Just own it.

When I talk about boobie utopia I dont get mad when people call me a dirty dawg. I own it.
