Dave Canales: Crafting Plays A Multi-Pronged Process

September 4th, 2023

Bucs OC Dave Canales.

Very interesting details from Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales about how plays are tweaked in training camp and preseason games so they are ready for the regular season.

Joe remembers having a logic instructor in college discussing whether a class could be easy yet also interesting. He didn’t think that was possible.

That sort of sounded like Canales and how he described the growth of his offense.

In preseason games, Canales said he didn’t want to add any additional wrinkles to a play to give a play away to future opponents. On the other hand, Canales wanted to use these same plays to not only build confidence but to sell veterans that Canales knows what he’s doing and that his offense will work when it counts.

“Putting something out there that the guys could grab onto and play fast,” Canales said of one of his goals. “And really coming out of three games in the preseason, really wanting our offensive players to feel proud of what we are doing and where we are headed.

“Practice success is, that’s one thing. But to [have the same plays work in games, now we get buy-in, from the veteran players especially.

“The young guys for the most part are fired up if the ball goes their way. The veteran guys can tell, ‘OK, this has got some juice to it. This is cool.’ So they get excited.”

Canales noted breeding confidence in players with the potential of the offense but at the same time not showing much is a “nuance.”

So, did the sell work on his players?

“I felt that from them,” Canales said of his players’ excitement for the offense.

It’s interesting how Canales stated he could run the same plays in a regular season game, but those plays will have more “wrinkles” than how a play was drawn up for preseason games.

This is why many refer to offenses in preseason games as “vanilla.” They are basic plays with the “wrinkles” added later for when the real bullets are flying.

So basically, preseason plays were like vanilla ice cream, and the regular season plays will be vanilla with different toppings? Hey, I like sprinkles. 😉

“Wrinkles”. That means formations, perhaps added motion.

Keep Mike. Johnny Wilson to the Bucs.

  7. PSL Bob Says:

Canales is not instilling a lot of confidence. Good thing is that when it appears the Bucs will finish at the bottom of the barrel, there’s only one way for them to go.

  8. SufferingSince76 Says:

Divis, Johnny Wilson isn’t available this year. Do we have to read his name every post until 2024?

  9. Capt2fish Says:

So preseason is vanilla….regular season is Vanilla Ice? Uh oh.

  10. Craig Says:

Simply add a wrinkle in the route or blocking scheme for each player a week.

Just don’t mess with poor little shnit Baker’s tender sensibilities. He is going to be hard pressed to keep up with it.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I sure would like to see a game.

  12. Capt2fish Says:

It is almost time to find out for sure, and if Baker does well I will drink a beer in your honor.

I hope there is more to see from the Bucs this season, last season might have been worse than the lost decade.
