Carlton Davis Returns At Full-Go; Jamel Dean Is Out; Others Gametime Decisions

September 29th, 2023

UPDATED 3:34 p.m. – So how about all those injured Bucs defensive players?

No. 1 cornerback Carlton Davis hasn’t played since opening day because of a bad toe. He was full-go in today’s light practice and head coach Todd Bowles was non-commital about Davis for Sunday in New Orleans.

Vita Vea (pectoral muscle) and cornerback Jamel Dean (shoulder) didn’t practice all week. Bowles said Vea is a gametime decision. Dean is out for Sunday, per the team’s official injury report.

Devin White (foot) was limited in practice. Joe wonders whether White’s bad groin is 100 percent? But his current injury (officially) is now “a foot.”

For those wondering, this will not be the week rookie first-round pick Calijah Kancey (calf) returns to play defensive tackle. He’s been ruled out officially.

Thats ok with Kancey. Gives him 2 more weeks with the bye to rehab that Calf.

  2. Buc1987 Says:

    All hands on deck.

  3. PC Says:

Year after year, soft tissue injuries continue to decimate the roster. Can’t be just a coincidence. America’s quarterback is going to torch the Bucs soft zone coverage with no pass rush and terrible depth in the secondary.

  4. Pewter Power Says:

Michael “slant boy Thomas vs CD

But Evans vs Lattimore is the main event. Oh yea Bucs let’s try to win this game. Should have pretended Saints were eagles Monday

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Kancy should not havhe played in week 1…….he is ultimately to blame because he knows his own body….he clearly wasn’t ready….

  6. Bojim Says:

Maybe they’re making sure Kancey is a go after the bye.

  7. BucsFan81 Says:

I bet the only one that doesn’t play is Dean and Vita. Either way this game is winnable as long as we stop the run and send the blitzes to get after Winston.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Personally I’d rather see us let our injured heal up rather than risk longer term injuries. White limping around at half-speed doesn’t help us one bit. Vea not getting any leverage in the Eagles’ game did nothing for us. And with Dean most likely out Sunday, we’d be screwed if Davis isn’t full-speed & ends up re-aggravating his injury.

Delaney & McCollum are both improving, and may surprise some folks if they start. Gaines got a lot of work against Philly & did OK I thought. It’s the offense that needs to figure out how to start putting more points on the board. Without that we’d probably lose anyways if our defense gives up their average 19 points.

  9. Rod Munch Says:

I think the biggest injury concern by far is with Vita, since I have a feeling the Saints are going to be extremely run heavy with Kamara back. If Vita is out, and White is out, I don’t see the Bucs being able to stop Kamara, assuming he’s in good shape (and not just beating up a random guy in an elevator good shape, but real good shape).

By mid November teams will be calling all of us to suit up. Stay on shape !

Growing up in the 80s, wearing my big orange BUCS jacket to school every Monday, win or lose, then going into the 90s Dungy era, and seeing the peak in 2002, that feels like one big long timeline to me. In that era I just really really really hated the Packers, and still do. As for Saints – it’s just another win or loss to me.

Not sure why it’s never connected as more than that, but I just don’t care about any of the boring NFC South teams, and my God, what a boring division.

But the Packers, that’s some real hatred, for them and their stupid fat cheese eating fans.

For the Saints fans, I just feel sorry for them, they’re a bunch of poor welfare trash living in a crime ridden city and play in a depressing dome stadium that smells like mildew.

  13. KC Buc Says:

Shame we are so beat up first couple weeks when we had a really good training camp with minimal injuries. Hopefully this early bye is a blessing and our defense gets back to health in 2 weeks for a reboot

“Kancy should not havhe played in week 1…….he is ultimately to blame because he knows his own body….he clearly wasn’t ready….”

Yeah, a young man who probably dreamt of being in the NFL for the past 10-15 years, when he finally gets the chance to play, is going to willingly delay his start in the NFL.

    It’s on the trainers.

  15. BakerBucs Says:

I guess I never understand that after 6 months off regular season & 2 line games they have this money injuries.u wud expect these (young) men wud b very healthy unless they treat the off season as a big friggin party & don’t keep in shape these people make way to much cash to not be 100% year round after they leave league thats the time to f— off,!!!

  16. Wild Bill Says:

As usual this game should be a toss up. The team that makes the fewest mistakes should win. I give Baker a slight edge over Famous James’s. If Kammera gets hot forgetabout it.

  17. Statguy Says:

Interested in how McCollum and Davis do together vs Davis and Dean. Dean still finds ways to be out of position

  18. #99 the big fella Says:

Rod I have to agree with you about saints fans.. lol

  19. Old School Bucs Says:

The only thing that matters is we got the Sniper Mayfield. Damn what an upgrade from Brady he is. Canales and Mayfield last year could have won us a Superbowl. Imagine what we will get this year! Go Bucs!

  20. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Kancey and Sirvoccia are busts until they see the field. Ridiculous!. He hurt his calf in July! I’m sure they will both have some aggravation after the bye.

  21. Mike C Says:

Rod…. the North is a boring division, Minnesota, is O and what in superbowls? Detroit??? The 85 bears? GB isn’t that interesting, they have had unbelievable stability and quality at the QB position and managed to only secure 2 superbowls during that time.

  22. Mike C Says:

Smh “FOOTBALL PLAYERS GETTING INJURED! RIDICULOUS GRRRRRR I AM SO MAD!!!!” this is what we need right here….. more of this.

  23. optimisticbucsfan Says:

Vea going from part timer to no timer

  24. LoveMeSomeBucs Says:

Who the hell are the Bucs trainers ?? I mean the last few years we have hamstring injuries galore and soft tissue injuries I mean what kind of training do they do…selfie squats..

  25. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Somewhere Jack Youngblood is shaking his head! Dude played a game with a broken leg but Kancey and Sirvoccia can’t play a season cuz their calf hurts! Wow!

  26. 1#bucsfan Says:

Rest everyone dealing with an injury. That’s gives the bye week also. The 2nd game against the division is usually more important because it’s the tie breaker if the records are tied. Let ‘em rest

  27. RagingBrisket Says:

    Sirvocea Dennis?

  28. teacherman777 Says:

    Britt is very slow.

Don’t let him play on 3rd down.

We really need to develop a SS/MLB hybrid to play on 3rd down.

I want a SS type of DB to play MLB on 3rd down.

White has been better in coverage this year. But I would have still preferred to play Keanu Neal last year at MLB on 3rd down and passing downs.

Sometimes I think it would be better if we pulled White or David or both on obvious passing downs.

Why not have 7 DBs sometimes on the field at one time?

I hope Bowles and the Bucs are reading this.

We need to develop some SS/hybrid/moneybackers to back up White and David.

  29. Old School Bucs Says:

So the injury and trainer question is an interesting one. Growing up it used to be u looked to the pros for the correct way to do things. Today not so sure. Hamstring issues as an example. They are thru the roof across the league.. Why? From what I see these trainers have the players running on treadmills. Runners know you dont run on treadmills. They are so bad for not just your knee joints, but hell on hamstrings. Yet not only are these world class athletes training on them they are rehabbing their hammies on them. Just stupid. There is a long list but I think the point is made. As a starting point any team that has a trainer running their guys on a tread, fire them immediately!!!!

  30. BucU Says:

Callijah Kancey = Russell Gage Jr.
    B U M.

  31. G8rh8r Says:

“ Devin White (foot) was limited in practice. Joe wonders whether White’s bad groin is 100 percent? But his current injury (officially) is now “a foot.”

Does that make his groin 12”? Impressive!

  32. Bucuup0101 Says:

You guys are brutal. Players played with injuries back in the day because they had to their paychecks were minimum wage compared to the loots these young guys are making. Besides this is the best way to tank a season COLLAPSE FOR CALEB is still in play

  33. Bucuup0101 Says:

    Loot

  34. VATom Says:

    Davis won’t ladt 3 series

  35. Voice of Truth Says:

With no Vea and White, they could run for 200 yards

The D injuries so early are putting pressure on an O that is already behind the eight ball

So we have a severely weakened D, absolutely no run game at all, and the journeyman punky QB led by a rookie coordinator and play caller

Hope this all a smokescreen and they miraculously show up Sunday

Gaines and Hall at DT all day is going to be a MAJOR problem

  36. JeffreyLane77 Says:

I really don’t want to lose to Winston.

  37. Pewter Power Says:

Man we have another game against the saints. Just let these guys heal up and be ready for week 6 unless your depending on injured players to save your job

  38. Eckwood Says:

Can they please offer both Whites to Indy and a later round pick to Indy for Taylor …..

  39. Buccos Says:

The injured can heal up after this game. This game is huge for us and it is all hands on deck. Other than Kancey and Dean I want to see everyone out there

  40. BucU Says:

F Kancey. He’s a bum. So is his Pitt teammate. A calf injury has sidelined him since training camp!! Is he 23 yrs old or 63 yrs old?
He is absolutely Russell Gage Jr. He’s worthless to this team. Wish we never picked another porcelain doll. We had enough of them already. Kancey is a bum. And his buddy Dennis is right behind him.

  41. Capt.Tim Says:

Glad Davis may play. Hes our best CB. Would hate for him to miss out on some of those jameis give aways!

  42. BucU Says:

Kancey goes down w a non contact drill in training camp around July 30th. July 30th! Whats the date today? Sept 26?And he’s still not even questionable to play. Just another week and another scratch.
What the hell is going on here? Why can’t a 22 or 23 yr old heal enough to play after what 9 or 10 weeks?
This is outrageous. And some of us here are like how dare we question this situation.
Well I’m straight up questioning everything about this guy now. He’s been nothing but a dissapointment and continues to be so. Now we see if maybe just maybe he can make an appearance after the bye week.

  43. Rod Munch Says:

Mike C – I think your rivalries are developed as kid, and sure, you can add to it – for example I really hated the St Louis Scams for screwing the Bucs out of a SB in 99-00, but then again I still lived and died with wins and losses as I was in my mid-20s. But the Saints, they’re just so dull. And the Panthers, there is literally no team in all of football that is more uninteresting than them. Then the Falcons, I forget they exist like 80% of the time until I see the schedule, and think, oh right, that’s the team with the sphincter like roof on their stadium.

Meanwhile, growing up, everyone you knew was from Chicago, Detroit, Wisconsin or Minnesota, there’s sort of a reason they put the Bucs in that division. And trash talking them was a huge part of being a kid. But I don’t know anyone from Atlanta or New Orleans, and the people I know from the Carolinas are too nice and polite to truly build up hatred for.

  44. Brandonbucc Says:

This team is horrible and soft.
