Baker Mayfield Pops Up On Injury Report

September 13th, 2023

Injured.

Corrected at 4:25 p.m. – Well, having an offensive lineman’s mentality sometimes means you get dinged up like an offensive lineman.

Such is the case with Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield whose name surfaced on the first injury report of Week 2, Bears week.

It seems Mayfield has a sore shoulder. Not the same shoulder he injured in his Cleveland days.

The good news is Mayfield was a full participant in practice today.

If Mayfield gutted it out through practice, that tells Joe unless he further injures it somehow, he will start Sunday against the Bears.

Mayfield had some tough runs in the Bucs’ win over the Vikings to open the season and Joe is confident this is when Mayfield’s injury occurred.

Calijah Kancey (calf), Christian Izien (concussion) and Carlton Davis (toe) also were on the injury report and none of the three participated in practice today.

    was Lavonte David listed?

  2. Infomeplease Says:

I saw a trainer rubbing it under his pads while BM was on the bench talking to DC. I thought that was not good. But it didn’t seem to effect his throws afterward.

  3. Alexandre Nascimento Says:

No, only the players mentioned above.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Give him a shot.

  5. Charles Says:

Already? Trask better be given plenty of reps in practice.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Not good that Kancey, Izien and Davis … 3 defensive starters … are on the injury report & missed today’s practice. Maybe it’s good that we’ll have an early BYE this year.

  7. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Jefferson probably stepped on it when he was running past Davis last Sunday AND before he blindsided Izien on the INT return.

  8. Mike C Says:

“Let’s Trade Trask for a 4th round pick DUHHHH!!!!!!”

  9. Marine Buc Says:

Izien got his bell rung by Jefferson after that INT right before the half…

If Jefferson wasn’t there Izien could have taken it to the house.

Oh well – I hope Izien can go this week that kid is a baller.

  10. Marine Buc Says:

Baker needs to stop acting like a fullback and be a little smarter.

It’s a 17 game season bro… Don’t get hit for a one yard gain. Just chuck it out of bounds… I appreciate the bravado but don’t take any additional risks for minimal production.

If you’re diving for a TD it’s one thing but getting nailed for just a one yard gain isn’t very wise.

  11. A Bucs Fan Says:

Baker will play unless he can’t throw.

Izien was already running on another field with a trainer today and all over social media. He will be fine.

Kancey is being held out as a precaution. MRI was negative and he only felt tightness. It was the trainers who shut him down.

The injury that is concerning is most concerning is Carlton Davis. He’s got a history of getting banged up and still being able to play. However, a toe injury could mean anything at this point. Tomorrow will be telling.

  12. Capt2fish Says:

Like someone would give a 4th round pick for trask!

  13. HC Grover Says:

No worries he will suck it up and pound the Bears.

  14. HC Grover Says:

I saw the film on Rogers. It shows his A tendon snapping. You can see it through his socks.

  15. NaplesBucsFan Says:

Marine Buc, what are you referencing for getting hit for a 1 yard gain. Without Mayfield’s 2 runs that were hard hits we don’t win that game. The first was the stiff arm for 5 yards and the second was for the 3rd down conversion which was outside FG range. So I don’t know what you’re talking about saying he shouldn’t have done it. If he doesn’t we most likely don’t win.

  16. adam from ny Says:

what the heck do you mean izien go this week ???

    dude is concussed…

league rules…he sitting at least a week…maybe more

  17. Woodenman Says:

I think your wrong on that.one Adam comes down to protocol and history .

  18. Mike C Says:

You are delusional if you think that couldn’t happen Capp2fish, either a FSU fan or just a plan h8er.

  19. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Adam it comes down to how he progresss through the 5 phases of the protocol. Technically it could be as short as one day per phase so he could be cleared by Saturday to play Sunday.

As far as WHAT the rules are for concussions I don’t believe they are adequate. I would like to see a 21 day minimum injured list just for concussions. No exceptions.

  20. adam from ny Says:

yeah i realized i was typing away fast on that one…just so used to dudes sitting after a big head shot…like marpet and winfield – multiple weeks at a time – so i googled league protocols and it seems guys can potentially go the next sunday…

    i learned something…

however you might be able to sit the rook anyway with a lame throwing qb like fields…i guess we’ll have to wait and see…

but then again i recall mitch blofitzky beating us at soldier field a few years back with 6 tds and 48 points…so you never know – sometimes we have a habit of letting average qbs look like pro bowlers

  21. adam from ny Says:

yeah guys somewhere in my head i believed if you’re concussed you have to sit a minimum of a week…

not sure where i dreamt this one up, but i did 🙂

  22. Mike Johnson Says:

I’ve said it all along. With the way Baker plays, there will come a time during the season when he goes down for a few games. He’s gritty and will not hesitate to mix it up with tacklers. Be ready Mr Trask..Be ready.

  23. Pewter Power Says:

Ummm hmm it’s sore trying to stiff arm dudes. You’re not a running back man, doesn’t help You get a payday if you get injured. Love his mindset but don’t overdo it. Trask could easily start for an injured baker and never give that job back to him

  24. Mr. Editor Says:

I hope that they stop the naked bootlegs that Mayfield was running. I don’t doubt his ability to deliver the ball, but those plays could be potentially dangerous.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

What this means is that they will tell him not to take those chances anymore.

  26. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Naples – there was another Baker run where he only got a yard and got crushed on the sidelines.

  27. Fansince76 Says:

Joe, the injury occurred during a pass play. If you go back and look at the tape.
a defensive player landed on him after he threw a pass. The play should have been called a penalty for the defensive player purposely landing on his shoulders.

  28. Duane Says:

Not good that he injured his throwing shoulder. Hope it’s nothing. I like Kyle Trask but the last thing I want is for whoever our starting quarterback to get injured. Aaron Rogers reminded us yet again that any player is only one snap away from ending their season. We got spoiled by Tom Brady who never missed a game to injury while with the Bucs.

  29. 1#bucsfan Says:

I’m not sure if baker can keep this type of playing up and not end miss some games due to injuries. As much as I’ve bin rooting for trask over TC I’m slowly becoming a baker fan after those runs. He’s showing grit and heart but if we want to win the south we prob need a healthy baker. I wanted trask to play do he could keep developing not saying we can’t win with him. Lol just saying.

  30. Mike S Says:

    Trask better stay ready.

  31. Lakeland Steve Says:

Mayfield may not be the greatest quarterback that ever lived but he’s good enough and he’s a Dawg.

  32. Lee bucs fan Says:

Mayfield played an entire season with a broken shoulder, i wouldnt keep your hopes up on trask taking over due to an injury

  33. David Says:

I warned you about Baker. He will play with one arm if he has to. He is so afraid to lose his job due to injury. That is how he destroyed Cleveland.

  34. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

It’s all a ploy so chicago has to prepare for both QBs
    He is playing..
    17 /25
    275 or more yards
    3 td 2 pasSES.. 1of them rushing
Its gonna be Big game for our wide receivers
Went to game in Minnesota .. Devin White was a monster
we had good turn out of bucs fan
Especially cody from north dakota state
Enjoy in Tampa .. I wish I was there

    Let’s Go Bucs!!!

  35. Esteban85 Says:

I for one am fine with what Baker had to do to win the game. He earned respect nation wide for his play on the gridiron. This is football not soccer, dudes gonna get banged up and Trask will likely see the field at least once this year. Baker needs to play his own style and get comfortable back there and I think putting his “face in the fan” as Todd puts it, is getting comfortable for this dude.

  36. SlyPirate Says:

Christian Izien (concussion) … this is news. Made 2 major plays. He’s our only true slot cb. Losing Izien would hurt … worse than Mayfield

  37. garro Says:

    That Joe is worysome.

He played through the other shoulder injury and shat the bed.

    Go Bucs!

  38. MiamiBuc Says:

This shows the folly of “running quarterbacks” in the NFL. They either stop running and pass, or they stop playing. Look at Brett Favre. Big guy – 6’2″ 235 lbs. Loved to run and mix it up with defenders. Holmgren reigned his ass in and he played forever, most consecutive QB starts in NFL history.

  39. MiamiBuc Says:

“Not the same shoulder he injured in his Cleveland days.”

The report you link to says “Right shoulder”. His prior injury was his left shoulder?

  40. MiamiBuc Says:

2021 – “Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has been playing with a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder.”

So he played through his non-throwing shoulder injury. This is his throwing shoulder.

  41. orlbucfan Says:

I bet Jefferson popped Izien when he tackled him. Izien played most of the game so the Bucs are being cautious. You would have to take a baseball bat or shoot BM to keep him out of next week’s game. It’s nice having two QBs that can back each other up FOR A CHANGE!!

  42. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as: BringBucsBack) Says:

Some of you guys are funny. Every one of Baker’s runs was necessary. The final 3 yard run was on the last drive for a first down, to help seal the game. If a player is not going to give up his body to seal a win then, when will he give it up?

If he didn’t go all out, especially on his final run, we would be questioning his toughness and motive and the game may have had a different outcome had the Vikings gotten the ball back. He is not the biggest guy, but neither was the guy who hit him. Even though he is a quarterback, those are tough guys too. Baker would agree!

  43. David Jones Says:

Running the ball at times should b a part of the strategy for all quarter backs. Look at The Chiefs

  44. Jay Pea Says:

Amazing how many “fans” don’t have a clue about football. A quarterback with a sore shoulder who fully practices is called “just another day in the NFL”.
