“We Need A Lot Of Tackling Work”

August 11th, 2023

Todd Bowles

The Buccaneers’ ugly tackling tonight is noteworthy because head coach defensive playcaller Todd Bowles made fixing the team’s rough tackling last season a priority for 2023.

Yes, the Bucs rested nine defensive starters against Pittsburgh: Shaq Barrett, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Ryan Neal, Carlton Davis, Antoine Winfield Jr., Devin White, Lavonte David, Vita Vea and Greg Gaines.

Still, the backups must tackle.

Bowles looked frustrated during his halftime interview and Bucs icon and game analyst Rondé Barber noted on the WFLA-TV broadcast that Bowles’ face told the story of bad tackling.

After the game, Bowles didn’t let up. He was asked about cornerback Zyon McCollum’s impressive interception and fired back talking about how McCollum’s shoddy tackling cost the Bucs a touchdown and that McCollum was lunging too much.

“We gotta work on tackling,” Bowles said, adding how sloppy the Bucs were on the first drive with players leaving their feet too early.

“We need a lot of tackling work.”

His favorite word… “Work.” Last year it was ALWAYS, we need more work, we gotta work on that, we’ve worked a lot on that in practice, I can’t tell ya what happened there, but we’re just gonna go back to work, and on and onnnn, blah, blah, blah. The dude just STANDS THERE literally (staring), all throughout the ENTIRE game… NEVER “coaching.” I don’t get-it… HOW did this dude even become an NFL ‘Head’ Coach EVER, in the first place!? How about some emotion, some excitement, some effing energy… How bout actually, ‘coaching’ a player or team UP a lil!? NEVER any amount of ‘urgency’ – NOTHING. Just the same-old ship. And, I’m not talking about a fricking pirate ship, either. The team just takes over his personality, body language, Etc. The ALL, just look-like a buncha fricken ZOMBIES out there… NO Energy. No Emotion. No ANYTHING.

  2. Brandon Says:

McCollum was awful at tackling last season. Dreadful. Justin Evans in college bad. Not sure he wants to.

  3. Cleanhouse Says:

    4-13

Hope it’s good or bad enough to get this clown escorted out of town

  4. RagingBrisket Says:

You need a hell of a lot more blocking work

  5. All_da_way Says:

A lot of the defensive backups will learn that the NFL is not for long if you can’t tackle.

  6. Dave Pear Says:

It’s interesting that the head coach says things but then does other things unrelated to the defect. Radical focal points — what could they be? Blocking. Tackling. Catching. Hmm. Football?

There’s time to figure it out but, figure it out.

  7. Rmbuc585 Says:

Was Logan Hall at Raymond James stadium tonight?

  8. Tbbucs3 Says:

Apparently Kwon Alexander played great for the Steelers tonight….Wouldve been a great depth piece to bring back at a cheap price.

  9. Crickett Baker Says:

Since real tackling is not even allowed in practice and these guys are mostly new to the NFL, whaddya expect, really? IDK about Zion or Luke, but I think most will show great improvement soon.

  10. HC Grover Says:

    Stunk, Stink, Will Stink.

  11. FortMyersDave Says:

Cleanhouse. If the Bucs go 4 dash 13 then Bowles will be launched. Question is if he finishes the season or gets canned midseason. The Joes should do a poll on which option fans will think will happen: 1) does he get launched early like Rhule in Carolina, 2) does he make it to January and get launched (likely option if front office is tanking for Caleb as Carolina could have got their qb without trading up with Chicago if they left Rhule as HC), 3) despite long odds, Bowles actually gets enough wins to keep his job.

  12. Obvious Says:

    Hey Grover,

I believe that’s Stink, Stank, and STUNK it up BAD!

  13. Rossta Says:

We Need A Lot Of Tackling Work” You think!

  14. Defense Rules Says:

Tbbucs3 … I was thinking exactly the same thing about Kwon Alexander. Britt isn’t the answer, although Dennis is a nice addition.

Our DEPTH players were not very impressive last night on offense or defense for the most part, although several did show promise. Sure would’ve liked to have seen how our starters stack up against a physical team like Pittsburgh though. Hopefully we’ll see that against the Jets next week (another physical team).

  15. Lt. Dan Says:

Surprised you didn’t add HOF’er to Rondé Barber’s name when referencing him Joe.

  16. NEFan Says:

I guess it wasn’t BRADY’S fault. Bowles, Blows. Mayfield, Mahomes, Brady, Allen, Roger’s etc. No QB can succeed in Bowles system.

  17. Voice of Truth Says:

Well, at least we are consistent

We got seal clubbed by the Cowgirls to end the season and Stomped on by the Steelers back ups to open this season

Settle in for 20 more weeks of this garbage – Todd is toast

  18. Reality BucFan Says:

Some Coaches Actually Know how to coach and prepare their team…No more B.Ariens We been terrible ever since he stepped down.. 0-17 get ready and I honestly hope so … That will at least get us a hole new coaching staff that actually Works

  19. HC Grover Says:

No Obvious. They stunk before yesterday, at the time of the game they were stinking up Ray Jay and they ‘will stink’ as long as The Bowles Curse is upon us. The fans will be like Pepe’ Le Phew’s Cat girlfriend. The stench will be unbearable.

  20. Pelsbuc61 Says:

It’s amazing that these “professional football players” still haven’t learned the fundamentals of tackling. Can’t help but blame coaching at this level. Bowles was always a succession plan instead of an actual coaching search and it’s apparent he’s not HC material. Bucs should be active trade partners this year and get draft capital. Get rid of players that won’t improve I.e. Goedeke, Zyon, Britt and give the young players valuable playing time.

  21. Obvious Says:

HC Grover, I’d have a hard time arguing that.

Yeah, I’m feeling like we’re pretty screwed at the moment BUT I suppose I’m holding out hope that when the starters finally get in the mix, maybe they’ll bring a little perfume with them.

And as far as Bowles goes, it’s the end of the line without an absolute miracle! He just doesn’t seem to be a capable Head Coach. You may have noticed that I’m being civil. I doubt I’ll remain so for long.

In the meantime, ESPECIALLY with the right side of the O line, they Don’t Have Enough lipstick to help that UGLY PIG out of the mud. Not Last Night anyways.

I’m thinking VEGAS KNOWS WHAT IT’S TALKING ABOUT!

Let’s just say I’ve restocked my bar with a YEAR’S SUPPLIES worth of “COPE ing Juice”

I did hear a lot of hope for the future out there with other talent though. Just no Real leader to steer them to success.

I’m also worried that I WON’T BE GETTING my Dynasty level qb either. For some reason I feel like Bowles IS Ruining that for me “one way or the other”! OR… is he Making Sure that we get a shot at one? Jury is still out…

  22. Buccanr1 Says:

Really bad tackling or lack there

  23. garro Says:

What!?! You mean the tackling beach balls drill aint working Todd?

We had the same crap tackling last year! If these guys can’t do live tackling in practice we will see more of the same. The NFLPA and Goodell have taken fundamental football out of the NFL training camps. Oh no we might get a hangnail!

    Go Bucs!
