Todd Bowles Names Baker Mayfield Week 1 Starter

August 22nd, 2023

Week 1 starter.

UPDATED: So much for Ira guessing.

JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman broke the news 12 days ago that Baker Mayfield would be the Bucs starting quarterback. Bucs coach Todd Bowles made that official this morning while answering a question from Joe about quarterbacks.

Yeah, Ira was wrong, wasn’t he? smh

Bowles had nothing but love for his No. 2 quarterback, competing Kyle Trask.

“We love everything Kyle has done and he’s gotten leaps and bounds better than he has in the spring and he’s continuing to get better and we’re excited about him,” Bowles said. “Baker’s our guy right now, experience-wise and understanding the playbook just a little bit better. But Kyle’s on the come. We like both guys. We like where we’re at. Baker’s No. 1; Kyle’s No. 2.”

So there it is. It’s officially the Baker Mayfield era at One Buc Palace.

    LFG!!

  2. Smashsquatch Says:

    No brainer.

  3. MadMax Says:

All good. If he starts messing up, Trask is waiting….as long as he keeps practicing and playing hard!

  4. K_bassuka Says:

🤦🏽‍♂️bad coaches making bad decisions. Happens every year and every year they act like they don’t know what transpired.

  5. Bee Says:

    #1 pick here we come!

  6. Usfbuc Says:

    Finally

  7. Terry O'Neal Says:

This is why Bowles will not be a great head coach. Fantastic DC but he is just too indecisive. Even top players (#13) are wondering WHY he won’t just pull the trigger. I like Trask but he is just not ready. The 1st team reps that Bowles is taking away from Mayfield will likely come back to bite him later. If they do he has only himself to blame. We are the ONLY team which has not named a Game 1 starter at QB. This makes Bowles look weak and uncertain. Too bad.

  8. pepsi Says:

Never thought Ira was wrong. but this was the easiest to assume would be the case. Ira broke that he heard it from within the org. everyone else just said “of course bakers going to be the QB1” besides maybe some UF fans. not to take anything away from ira, but JBF kinda acted like Rapaport and Schefter and Pelissero didnt say weeks ago that everything they hear indicates Baker will be starting for the Bucs. Now the question is – was this fake competition a good idea? did it push Baker or should Baker have been getting the starting reps with the ones this whole time?

  9. eric Says:

Lol man over and under by the 7th game he will be benched and Todd might be out of an job!

  10. Daddylonglegs Says:

This is BULLSPIT!! Hope he falls flat on his back and we lose every game he plays in! He’s not the answer and the Bucs know this. Mayfield gives us a better shot at a top draft pick. Hope Trask leaves after this year and wins a Super Bowl with another team. Bowles is an idiot.

  11. Terry O'Neal Says:

OK never mind LOL. I guess Todd read my comment and rushed out to announce Baker!!! Seriously it was a move he needed to make.

  12. Mike Says:

It’s going to be a lot of old school Bucs football this year. 3 yards an a pile of dust. Below average QB play. Hopefully good defense though…

  13. Lord Cornelius Says:

lmao just so disingenuous. What happened between the game and now that was the deciding factor lol…

  14. Alanbucsfan Says:

…soon we’ll hear the call for Urban Meyer to be the next coach

  15. No Mercy Says:

We all saw this coming. They want a game manager who can stretch the field if he has to. Baker has the confidence under center, and who knows, maybe he actually plays good enough to win us some games. But if we really are trying to win this year, JT is on the market. Either tank for a QB or go out and get JT to help us win the south. I’m not really a fan of this lukewarm area of 6-7 wins and missing out on a generational QB like Caleb Williams could be

  16. Dave Pear Says:

Anyone with eyes and sense knew this was always the case. Bowles thinks he’s a genius, LOL. Sad that there are Buc fans wanting Baker to fail and lose every game. Just put on your number 2 jersey and suck on your pacifier.

  17. Andrew Fish Says:

Just confirms Trask never had a shot when Mayfield didn’t play the last preseason game. What a bunch of crap. Mayfield will be average at best with plenty of INT’s. Bowles went with experience and that’s what his experience is.

Weak division and a good roster we will finish at 7-10. just outside the playoffs but to good to draft a good QB.

  18. Bee Says:

I wonder how many losses we’ll have to rack up for Todd to make a change. And then bring in Trask to play clean up. Smh

  19. Dave Pear Says:

How many wins must Baker lead the Bucs to before the Trask worshipers zip their pie holes?

  20. Infomeplease Says:

    LFG!!!!!

  21. StormyInFl Says:

Anyone hoping Mayfield fails isn’t a Bucs fan. Go find a new team.

  22. Jp09 Says:

^^ 10 and a playoff game should be the minimum standard for any NFL starter with 6 years experience

  23. Blue Ridge Buc Says:

Hopefully on a very, very short leash. First sign that he’s not the guy in ’24, put Trask in. We cannot waste the year

  24. Rover Says:

    And we’re off….

  25. StormyInFl Says:

“How many wins must Baker lead the Bucs to before the Trask worshipers zip their pie holes?”

It won’t matter. They’re Gator fans, not Bucs fans. Mayfield could go undefeated and these clowns would still cry.

  26. Rick Says:

It’s the right move. If Baker sucks then by week 8 we go to Trask and let him finish the season. We can decide from there if he’s the future or not. If Baker does well then we have our QB of the future. If they both suck then our record will suck and we can draft a new QB early.

  27. Dwayne Cone Says:

Bet Joe has had this one in his pocket for a while. Congrats to Mayfield.

So the question is. Will the Bucs trot him out like a Star for one series against a tough Ravens Defense or will they spare him that embarrassment until week 1?.

Be pretty sad to have your QB1 look like QB2 to a guy drafted in the 5th Round and 1 NFL start.

Maybe next year Baker can undercut Jacoby Brissett’s 8 million, reduce the Washington Commanders Cap by 6 Million and back up Sam Howell.

    Good Luck.

  28. HC Grover Says:

Quick take the Vikes -6.5. Bowlzo strikes again.

  29. Buc1987 Says:

The whole thing was a sham to begin with.

  30. Bee Says:

People haven’t seen Half Baked be “successful” in what 5 years but somehow he’s supposed just flip the switch? Smh…Baker fans have set the bar real low.

  31. Bucnjim Says:

This isn’t a popularity contest! If you’re a Bucs fan you’ll cheer for both Mayfield and Trask. Something tells me they’ll both play this year. Don’t be that fan that would rather be right about something than see your team succeed. We haven’t played one game yet!

  32. Dwayne Cone Says:

    StormyInFl Says:

Anyone hoping Mayfield fails isn’t a Bucs fan. Go find a new team.

And what was your excuses for his failure last season again?

  33. Buccobruce Says:

There goes the fake competition. Baker gets the job on 9 passes. This was a done deal from the start. I already have tickets for saturday but that will be my last until this clown show is gone, cant support an organization that lies. So experience counts TB’s head coach experience is bad snd he chooses Mayfield whose experience bad. He will get what he deserves

  34. Marine Buc Says:

Good. Mayfield looked solid against the Steelers.

Trask also played well this preseason and will be a great QB2 for us…

I’m going to hold my opinions until after the first few games. I am more concerned with our offensive line at this point.

  35. DRM Says:

Bowles has a flexible relationship with the truth

  36. Hillbilly Trash Says:

Hey Trash go back to your trailer park.ya little sister (11) is ready to marry you per Southern (Confederate) tradition. Y SUCK YANKEE DICK BOY !!! 😂😂😂😂😂hahahahahaha

  37. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Odds are both guys get some starts with neither one being very good.

  38. Mike S Says:

Bowles couldn’t risk another Trask stellar performance.

  39. Steven007 Says:

I thought if we had two quarterbacks we had no quarterbacks? That’s what I kept hearing. But we have a starting quarterback and a backup just like we did before all the conjecture. Those cliches are so annoying. Any true Bucs fan will hope Baker does well. And if he doesn’t, we have a fall back option.

  40. Trailer Park Trask Says:

With Baker starting now, Trask has more time now to develop & plan that fall wedding to his little sister ( Southern tradition) so all you Baker haters , you can enjoy the season SUCK IT & watch Baker ( MVP Superbowl ) TB 38 Jets 10.

  41. Smoothbayrider Says:

Are you guys Bucs fans or what ? Root for the guy. He may not have been a great QB to this point, but he certainly hasn’t been terrible either. He is an elite thrower of the football. Give the guy a chance and root for him until he starts sucking.

  42. Whimpy Says:

    Fire Bowles – Start Trask!

  43. Smoothbayrider Says:

  44. Dave from Winter Park Says:

Folks, I know Ira Kaufman will agree with me on this. The only reason Matt Rhule is the Head Football Coach at Nebraska is because Baker Mayfield was so terrible as the starting quaterback with the Carolina Panthers. Mayfield’s 2022 record as a starter with the Panthers: 1 WIN AND 6 LOSSES ❗️Mayfield was waved by the Panthers on December 5, 2022 and Matt Rhule was fired as head coach of the Panthers on October 10, 2022 after a 1-4 start. I love the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but business is business. I will bet the Bucs Under 6.5 Wins (-125 at Circa Sports) 💰💰💰💰💰when I arrive in Las Vegas this Thursday. It’s “Tanking for Caleb Now” in 2023 ❗️Dave Corcoran, 2018 Westgate Super Contest Winter Park, Florida.

  45. Cobraboy Says:

    I’m shocked.

    /sarc

  46. Mike S Says:

There won’t be any buy in on Mayfield. The moment he steps on the field we’ll be calling for Trask.

Bucs are going to get smoked by Minnesota.

  47. Steelers fan Says:

Kyle won that QB comp and everyone knows it including Bowles. Its just politics. Trask will be QB1 soon.

  48. Baker Costanza Says:

Sure, go Bucs… etc etc… but Trask was the better long term pick. Now the best case scenario is that Baker has a good year on his one year deal and earns a wildly expensive contract.

Unless there is something going on in practice we can’t see, I don’t see how Baker elevates the team to Super Bowl contender. And that should be the standard. Would Trask have done that? Maybe not, but the team would’ve had two seasons to find out, and for less money.

Maybe the Bucs get 2 more wins this season because of Baker’s experience, but they enter next season with no starting QB again. Bad trade off.

  49. Baker bustemup Says:

And what was your excuses for his failure last season again?

Not that we need to rehash, but the Carolina stop was totally dysfunctional (they had their own Schiano moment). And the Browns are, well, the Browns.

And what are your excuses for Trask looking like hot boiled ass until the Jets game? He finally puts it together in one game, and suddenly he’s should be the starter? All that happened before doesn’t matter?

  56. Aceofaerospace Says:

Well then, I’m Mayfield’s biggest fan…until I’m not. Go Bucs!

Folks, I know Ira Kaufman will agree with me on this. The only reason Matt Rhule is the Head Football Coach at Nebraska is because Baker Mayfield was so terrible as the starting quaterback with the Carolina Panthers.

Actually, one of the Joes and I have said that Matt Rhule was absolutely horrible at developing in the NFL any quarterback to be successful. He failed with every single one of them.

My guess is that Ira will agree with one of the Joe’s and me. Matt Rhule is less an NFL coach than Baker Mayfield is an NFL quarterback.

  60. HC Grover Says:

Since there are like Zero Oklahoma or Mayfield fans around here this means those who like this move are Bowlezo Fans.

  61. Oneilbuc Says:

I knew he would be the starter when they signed him so it’s not shocking to me that he’s the starter. Did he earned it no did the coaches think he would out play Trask yes until the Jets game last week that’s why they didn’t put Baker Mayfield out there because he probably wouldn’t have played well. But it’s all good I’m giving this season 5 games if we are 1-4 I will be done with this season. It’s a strong possibility Todd Bowles will be gone right along with Baker Mayfield next year. Now I hope we win to many games that we can’t draft a quarterback next year.

  62. Pewter Pride Says:

Jamies 2.0…that’s why Joe has a love affair with him. This will be the move that gets Bowels fired, not the move that saves his job.

  63. RuKa Says:

    We are all shocked…. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

  64. Dwayne Cone Says:

    geno711 Says:

horrible at developing in the NFL any quarterback to be successful

After leading Cleveland to the playoff to much Hooplah you are not excusing away a 3-9 record (1-4 @ CAR) on bad coaching and his inability to develop a QB? That coach signed two first round picks. Is it to the point now that players no longer have to accept responsibility for poor performance?

    Maybe I am missing something.

  65. Red86 Says:

Sigh… Go Bucs. No tanking please!

  66. Drew Says:

Glazers to Bowles… stop by the office and pick-up your pink slip on your way out.

  67. Give it a Rest, Trask Bridge Says:

There should never have been a competition. What a waste of first team snaps.

Trask has developed well, he’s just three years behind going back into college. Developing this year is the best outcome for Trask. He’s not ready for starting in the NFL yet.

Those deluded fans on here thinking that Trask outperformed Mayfield in training camp other than two days of practice did not follow the competition 1/10th as closely as I did.

Mayfield had a significant lead before the first preseason game, and Trask’s poor play in that game sealed it. Joint practices favored Mayfield by all national and local pundits in attendance.

Trask lost the competition to a better quarterback with a proven track record of starting in this league. The locker room picked Mayfield. The veterans recognize talent & leadership and the NFL players voted Mayfield a top 100 player in the NFL only two seasons ago. It’s not complicated.

This is sensical if you’re not a delusional Gator fan. The last thing any Gator or Trask fan should be wanting their guy to start in the murderer’s row of games 1-4. This offense will not be clicking until at least week 8, most likely, even with the veterans.

  68. Give it a Rest, Trask Bridge Says:

P.S. if this was a true competition, Wolford would have been the #2, not Trask.

I’ve rewatched the Jets game 3+ times now, and Wolford outplayed Trask in his limited snaps from the first throw on. Compound that with CONSISTENT reports over the entirety of camp through joint practices, and Wolford is more deserving.

So before you whine about an unfair competition, consider the actual second best QB was relegated to QB3.

  69. Kevin Says:

I want to know what’s the big deal of everyone wanting to force Todd into naming a starter before he is or was ready, hell if it would have taken him up to a hour before kickoff before the first regular season game to have name one that would have been he prerogative

  70. Smoothbayrider Says:

Dwayne Cone, Let me get this straight. Because Mayfield didn’t have success in CAR l, in year one with a new team, coach(that got fired) , and teammates, it means he’s no longer any good ? Seems like some pretty flawed logic.

  71. StormyInFl Says:

P.S. if this was a true competition, Wolford would have been the #2, not Trask.

So before you whine about an unfair competition, consider the actual second best QB was relegated to QB3.

They’ve been whining since the day the team signed Mayfield. The Gator fans felt (from day one) that Trask was somehow entitled to the job, simply because ‘”he’s waited”.

They were never going to accept anyone but Trask.

  72. Duane Says:

Bowles decision was a career killer whichever way it went. He will always coach is way to mediocrity. The decision to bring Baker in was Bowles picking the starter. We pay both corners $20 mil/year while kicking the can on their salaries. Winfield is likely another $15-$20 a year, and lets not forget the brinks truck that 45 wants. Baker and Trask combined make about $6 million. Do you think Bowles is worried about the quarterback situation on this team? He is going to ball control and score points through turnovers himself, his staff, and his quarterback out of this league. Team Glazer should be sending people up to Michigan to find out how bad that recruiting issue is.

  73. Buc1987 Says:

StormyInFl…I’m a Nole and Baker is garbage.

  74. Dwayne Cone Says:

    Smoothbayrider Says

Mayfield didn’t have success in CAR l, in year one with a new team, coach(that got fired)

But yet folks that use that reasoning have “he went to the Rams and in two days prep beat the Raiders on Thursday Night Football’ coming out the other side of their mouth.

Guys don’t give away 3.5 million dollars of their own money to get a job if they are any good.

  75. Buddha Says:

Really? You are a buc fan and you hope Baker falls flat..Grow up. .

  76. Duane Says:

I certainly hope this is the right decision – I have to trust that the coaches and GM have thoroughly worked this out to provide the best chances to win games this season.

How confident am I that Baker Mayfield will be a successful starter? As much as I hope he is, it remains to be seen. He’s experienced yes, but a lot of his experience was unsuccessful in terms of Ws and Ls. I don’t care about his stats, or any other player’s individual stats – I just about Ws and Ls.

  77. D-Rome Says:

It’s the correct decision. We should all feel good about Kyle Trask being the backup. If he gets an opportunity we know he’ll be ready. He’s put in the work.

  78. Smoothbayrider Says:

Dwayne Cone, listen to yourself. Mayfield is two years removed from being named a top 100 NFL player by his peers. One of those years was marred by injury. My point is…. you can’t use his lack of success in Car last year as proof that he isn’t a good NFL QB.

  79. Smoothbayrider Says:

Why is it that the Jameis Lovers are Baker haters. Can somebody please explain this?

  80. Dwayne Cone Says:

    Smoothbayrider Says

Mayfield didn’t have success in CAR l, in year one with a new team, coach(that got fired)

Watcthed the Highlight of CAR vs CLV Week 1 with Baker.

    Mayfield Passing.
Hit a receiver 35 yards down the field in stride.

Hit a 45 yard Pass down the field to receiver in stride.

Hit other passes on the money.

Over threw a receiver by 8 yards and was picked. Guess you would explain that as Baker forgot for a second that his receivers in CLV all ran a 3.35 at the Combine.

Cannot see any validity to your New Team/ Not enough time argument.

If CAR had dealt McCaffery before week one CAR would have lost by 2 scores easy.

  81. Smoothbayrider Says:

Duh Wayne . You can’t be serious can you ? Stop looking at what mayfield did in his first year in Carolina with a crappy coach(that immediately got fired) and crappy players. It wasn’t even a whole season’s worth of data. Just freakin stop

  82. Smoothbayrider Says:

Duh Wayne. Mayfield also missed almost all of last off season because he was rehabbing a the shoulder injury that he suffered in week 2 and then played the rest of the season on before having surgery.

  83. Smoothbayrider Says:

So no, he didn’t have enough time in Carolina.

  86. geno711 Says:

    Dwane Cone.

    Two things can be true.

I am not a big fan of Baker Mayfield.

As much as I think Baker is a lower end starting quarterback, I think Matt Rhule was the actual worst head coach in the league last year and the year before.

  87. geno711 Says:

Matt Rhule record 11 – 27 in the NFL. .289 winning percentage.

  88. Smoothbayrider Says:

@Geno Mayfield also had arguably the worst coach in the league his rookie year with Hue Jackson. His head coach in his second season (Kitchens) was also atrocious.

  89. Canabuc Says:

Well I will root for Baker because I am a Bucs fan first and foremost. I don’t get why some people on this forum feel a greater need to be right than to support their team as fans.

That said from what I saw I think Trask was the better QB in preseason. But I understand Bowles is a conservative coach and is coaching for his job and he feels at this time that Baker gives them the best chance to win as he has done it before.

Hopefully the staff is open minded enough to pivot to Trask if Baker isn’t getting it done.

  90. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as: BringBucsBack) Says:

“Baker gets the job on 9 passes.”

  91. Student of the Game Says:

HC Grover, you are wrong, I’m a Baker fan.
Will all of you haters admit you are wrong when Tampa Bay is 2-1 in September? How about 3-1 in October? 3-1 or even 2-2 in November? 10-7 will win the south. If you are going to Vegas, bet on Tampa Bay to win the South. Then thank me on this thread.

  92. David Says:

This is a crock of craps. This competition was rigged all along with Baker as starter and Trask as poppet/element to push the trash Baker.
This will be a worst than nightmare on elm street movie for Todd B. Hw will go down the toilet with Baker. No team will dismiss their second round without evaluating him in meaningful games. Why the F* did you even draft the guy ?

You are a Trask hater. Stop pretending. Go follow your garbage Baker since were worry about taking reps from him.

Bake Didn’t need first team reps. Remember he is an experience qb with 64 starts in NFL. That is why he is a worthless on and off the filed.

Kyle has looked better in the off-season and shown the most growth.

Baker is a mediocre player with a scared coach trying to manage games.

The defense will be suspect against big Offenses..
So will see if baker can be a gun slinger and how many big shots he will take before they bring Trask out.

  96. chickster Says:

  99. RTG_BUCS Says:

I think it is the wrong decision mostly because we have wasted a 2nd round pick that could have been used on a player that would have helped when we had Brady. Who knows, maybe that one player would have helped us beat the Rams? I didn’t see either QB separate themselves from the other so in my opinion it really should be Trask as we do not know his upside but we know Mayfields. That being said, GO BAKER!!! GO BUCS!!! I hope Baker plays awesome and helps us to a division title or better! I root for who is in the uniform and on the field.

It was pretty obvious that Trask is the guy with the greater upside. Baker will hav e a better opportunity to win more in the first 4 games. Trask will be a better QB in the second half of the season. Baker is the cowards pick. Bowles needs to go after this season cause we do have a very solid team. But we are a year out from contending. Why not start working towards that already??

There go Bowles bug trick of fooling the Vikes. LOL

I wouldnt be shocked if Baker shows hes A$$ IN THE PRESEASON GAME ,before he even starts a REAL game the fans will be chanting TRRRRR—ASK! TRRRR-ASK!

  108. garro Says:

This is why we look like a bunch of fools in Tampa. Draft a talented QB and do nothing but screw him over.

    Geez!

You should change this site’s name to JoeBucs whiners. I was never a fan of any of our qbs (except Doug Williams and to a lesser extent Testaverde)that includes, Jameis, Dilfer, Freeman, Johnson (but respected his play), or even Brady but when the season started I was a supporter of every player on the team and ALWAYS believed that the team would be successful even when I knew there might be a struggle.
