Todd Bowles’ Hot Seat

August 11th, 2023

Temperature gauge.

So Wednesday, the co-hosts of the best damn football radio show in the land, “Movin’ the Chains,” Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller, dropped in at One Buc Palace as part of their annual training camp tour heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Kirwan and Miller decided to have fun and hosted a faux Bucs news conference from the team media studio where Bucs types regularly step up to the podium.

Among the questions the duo fielded  — hey, how did “Ira Kaufman” lose his Brooklyn accent? — was about Todd Bowles’ job security.

Kirwan, the former Bucs scout, Jets linebackers coach and front office suit, didn’t hold back.

Miller asked Kirwan point blank, “Is there a hot seat for Todd Bowles?” Affirmative, Kirwan replied.

“Yeah, there is,” Kirwan said. “That’s how this league works. Todd’s been through this before.

“[The Bucs would] be making a mistake. I think he is going to be terrific with this young football team. But, we all know how this works.”

(Keep in mind that Bowles was a weekly guest of Kirwan and Miller last season.)

This is why Joe has suggested for months that unless Kyle Trask pulled a Russell Wilson — when the Pro Bowl quarterback was a rookie and so wowed Pete Carroll that the Seahawks couldn’t pull him off the field — Baker Mayfield would be the starter.

Why? Bowles needs wins. A play-it-safe guy like Bowles isn’t going to risk his head coaching career on a guy with just nine passes to his name unless Trask forced his hand through superb work in August. Remember last year in Cleveland when Bowles was scared Tom Brady might throw a pick? Bowles is averse to risk.

Joe thinks Trask is somewhat outplaying Mayfield in camp, but it hasn’t been nearly enough to win the job over experienced Mayfield, Joe believes, given Bowles’ warm (hot?) seat.

Joe will remind folks that since Team Glazer purchased the Bucs, only one coach has survived two straight losing seasons, after that same coach won Team Glazer a Super Bowl. His name is Chucky.

Also, Bowles has four straight losing seasons as a head coach. Very few coaches in the Super Bowl era (nearly 60 years) have gone extended their losing streak to five years and returned for a sixth.

So yeah, Bowles needs wins, if for no other reason than to keep the wolves quiet.

New OC with no experience at this level, new suspect QBs, high expextations for unproven running backs and a defense still trying to replace Suh and JPP. If Bowles can make all that work he is a far greater field general than he gets credit for. With 4 losing head coaching seasons in a row, it’s really difficult to see where this is going, lol

  2. Jp09 Says:

Bowles need wins, Mayfields career record 33-39….

  3. Defense Rules Says:

‘Joe thinks Trask is somewhat outplaying Mayfield in camp, but it hasn’t been nearly enough to win the job over experienced Mayfield, Joe believes.’

Nailed it Joe. Experience counts & it gave Baker a leg up right from the start. How he uses that experience in this situation though is anyone’s guess at this point. We still have 2 preseason games to go however, and if things get ugly with Mayfield at the helm, I don’t think that Bowles would hesitate to play the Trask card right from the git-go.

Regardless of which QB starts, I think most JBFers want to see the Bucs succeed. None of this ‘Tanking for Caleb’ horsepuckey; there are zero guarantees there either.

  4. Debbie Says:

Brady with Gronk were the key to our winning Superbowl and Conference. They brought the win ning drive to our team. We had a great offense and an unstoppable defense led by Bowles. We knew we had to rebuild with a big debt to pay. This is our year of paying off the debt. It was worth it. The last year Suh played he was not effective. The last year JPP played, he was injured and needed surgery and still played.Hope he comes back to coach his position.
Trask will get to prove himself in one pre season game against the Jets, who now have Aaron Rogers, and maybe more.. Baker Mayfield is who we have for now. Cheer them both. Let’s have an injury free season and cheer on our team and the players we will see in Canton. Lavonte David and Mike Evans will be there. Let’s cheer on another 1000 to increase the NFL rookie record Mike already holds. There is alot to watch the Bucs for this season and years to come. #GO BUCS!

  5. Onetrickpony Says:

    Caleb ?
I’m getting a headache, another JW possiably ?

  6. Drew Says:

I predict Mayfield will turn the ball over three times tonight. Two ints and a fumble. Are there any great HCs available to replace Bowel next year. Start the better QB Trask or start looking for another gig Bowel movement.

  7. FortMyersDave Says:

Joe said “Remember last year in Cleveland when Bowles was scared Tom Brady might throw a pick?”. That simply reminded us fans why Bowles was an epic fail with the Jets. The guy simply does not have the mentality to take a chance and go for the win (no risk it, no biscuit) or simply step on the neck of his opponent when he has a chance. Coach Bowles plays not to lose and inevitably the team finds a way to lose like they did in that Browns game under him more often than not. Granted he had Leftwich dialing up offensive plays but to take the ball out of Brady’s hand late in a game out of fear of a pick is grounds alone to put the dude on the hot seat even if he did not have a miserable W/L record after that first fluke year with the Jets…… Bowles is probably a big reason why the Vegas win total for the Bucs is 6.5, not the only reason but a huge one…….

  8. Thomas Edrington Says:

Should have been gone last year…

  9. Curse of Gruden Says:

I listen to the posts of the one guy who shows his face next to every post.

  10. Beej Says:

Throwing that last game to Atlanta looms larger every day

  11. Mike C Says:

Smh Trask is playing better…… so let’s start Baker, ffs this guy is a clown. PLAY WHO IS PLAYING BEST, not a complex concept!

  12. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

He has a 5 year contract, in case anyone does not know

  13. Da Bucs Guy Says:

When the head coach runs a sham QB competition, then the seat just got even hotter.

  14. Roc Says:

I don’t understand the question on Bowles
WHY does anyone believe he can produce a winning team????

Joe writes 4 straight losing seasons
BUT better sentence – One winning season in 6

    Bowles LOST WITH BRADY
Bowles only went to playoffs because he LUCKED UP into a crap division

    SOOOOO QUESTION OF THE DAY?????!
Why does ANYONE THINK he can win??????

  15. Woodenman Says:

Doesn’t mean he can’t be fired!

  16. garro Says:

We should all hope that Bowles pulls one out of …his… hat.

Everyone these days is in the new is better insttant gratification thing.

Firing Bowles sounds good till you play it all the way through. New caoches all around, new offense, new defense, maybe new GM (Licht may bolt for greener pastures and I would not blame him one bit.)

Not saying he shouldn’t be fired but our future may not be as bright as many think. We have been through this before folks.

That people is another recipe fpr alot of losing.

Put your shrinks number back on speed dial.

    Go Bucs!

  17. Buc4evr Says:

Bowles should have never been given the HC job. Huge mistake but it’s the Glazer’s money. Add Mayfield to the mix and it’s just another dumb decision by the Bucs.

  18. HC Grover Says:

    Up the gut at 7pm.

  19. Since76 Says:

The BUCS made the wrong decision hiring Bowles without interviewing other possible candidates. Thanks Arians way to go. Now Bowles to save save his job possibly thinks that Mayfield is the safer option. That blows my mind because he’s been a turnover machine so far. He’s turned the ball over in camp just like he’s done in games. Turnover battle is the #1 stat in wins and losses I believe. Now throw in that trask has been better throughout the camp and has taken care of the ball better. How does Mayfield translate as the starter. Because he has experience losing??? I hope he succeeds and he could with the receiver talent the BUCS have. We will see tonite. Go bucs

  20. Hodad Says:

So everyone agrees the Bucs have no Brady, no cap, no QB, no O line, no hope, only favored in one game, not expected to win more then six games, yet bowles is on the hotseat? During a fall from the top, going from the GOAT to Traskerfield, going from an old roster to one of the youngest over night Bowles still is expected to win the SB, or be fired? Not happening. The Glazers will stick with Bowles through this transition phase for at least next season too. They realize Bowles is in a no win situation not of his own making. Bowles gets three years no matter what happens this season.

  21. Dave Says:

Joe, if experience meant that much, shouldn’t Baker be clearly outplaying Trask? What does that say about Baker that he can’t clearly outplay the guy with 9 passes?

  22. Defense Rules Says:

Hodad … I agree with you about Bowles getting 1 more year after this one, UNLESS everything really falls apart this season. If the Bucs go say 4-13 like so many pundits predict, and in the process our defense plays terrible, we’ll have a new HC & coaching staff next season I’d bet. But it’d have to be something ‘dramatic’ like that for him to lose his job IMO.

  23. Dwayne Cone Says:

If the Defense Rocks and the Offense is Better with his New OC he will be OK. No one left to throw under the Bus this year.

  24. Dwayne Cone Says:

    Buc4evr Says:

Bowles should have never been given the HC job. Huge mistake but it’s the Glazer’s money. Add Mayfield to the mix and it’s just another dumb decision by the Bucs

Really hate to see a guy lose one job because he didn’t get Baker and another because he did.

  25. ATLBuc Says:

Joe said: Bowles is averse to risk.

    And Mayfield represents less risk???

  26. ATLBuc Says:

I wonder why Canales would accept an OC position with no say so on who his starting quarterback is.

Litch “Dave, we’re going to bring you in as OC and do a fake qb competition thingy but we really are going to let Baker Mayfield start even if Trask outplays him in training camp and preseason games”
Dave: “Sure Jason !! I’ve been waiting all my life for an opportunity like this!!”

  27. bucnjim Says:

The Bucs were actually doing pretty well until they kicked Arians off the sideline. I’m going to assume Arians was a little pissed because after that he didn’t even go to most (or any) games. We were 2-0 with Arians present then we went 1-6 after he left the sidelines. Coincidence? The seat is on fire!

  28. Dwayne Cone Says:

Phone or Tablet and Cancel the free trial after 7 days if you chose

  29. Joe Says:

Does anyone know how to watch tonight’s game online?

Quick reminder that anyone offering information on illegal streams can and will be run.

So the answer to this question is either NFL+ or Buccaneers.com. Geographic restrictions apply.

(All broadcast and streaming info is always included in “Gameday Tampa Bay” each week. Joe has this week’s edition scheduled for 2 p.m.)

  30. Joe Says:

Bowles should have never been given the HC job. Huge mistake but it’s the Glazer’s money.

Joe is *very* confident Bowles’ hiring was set up back when Team Glazer hired Bruce Arians as a package deal. Given what has transpired over the past three years financially, Team Glazer is coming out way on top.

Luvmybucs, Great post! Time with Jets was irrelevant! Last year 8-9, but everyone knows he took out the whole first string in the second half in preparation for the playoffs. If all he was concerned with was having anointing record, he would not have done that.

    You’re not wrong. 🙂

Joe has credentials issued from both the Bucs and NFL. Joe’s also responsible for what people comment. Joe can very easily lose his credentials by letting folks alert readers to illegal streams. And yes, the NFL has goons monitoring NFL credentialed sites for illegal stream intel.

In fact, some of these goons will actually anonymously bait people to share such information, and then come after the credentialed website for allowing someone to publish the information.

Joe can lose significant revenue without credentials. The commenter? He/she wouldn’t lose a nickel.

Sorry if this inconveniences folks but pirated streams can easily be found on Google or some other site.

  37. Dwayne Cone Says:

I agree 100%. Actually on the NFL Plus commercial instead of using Josh Allen to tell the guy there is a better way to watch they should have had the cops come and hook him up. Peering or Peeping thru another’s window is also a Crime.
