Stacking Reps

August 1st, 2023

Snaps help.

Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians used to motivate his team after a win by saying the team only needed to “keep stacking” wins. Before you know it, you’re in the playoffs.

New Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales believes players first have to stack snaps.

Canales explained to Joe yesterday this is part of why Kyle Trask went from being on the cusp of being yet another Bucs draft pick of a quarterback to get spit out, to possibly being on the verge of becoming an NFL starter.

“Familiarity with the system, and really reps for Kyle,” Canales told Joe.

Trask has gotten a lot of snaps in training camp this summer. Yesterday, Trask seemed to have a lot more snaps than veteran Baker Mayfield.

“Him being able to stack up days [has helped Trask],” Canales said. “Had a fantastic day [Sunday]. Finished great again [yesterday]. He’s really making strides that I think everyone was hoping for coming in here. So I’m fired up for that for the [quarterback] room.”

Canales told Joe that no matter who starts at quarterback come September, even if it is No. 3 quarterback John Wolford, Bucs fans should be comfortable he can lead the Bucs to wins.

“I feel confident with Mike [Evans] and Chris [Godwin] going in with any three of those guys,” Canales said. “They are just playing the offense right.”

Interesting how Joe never heard that kind of chatter the previous three seasons. Or was that simply because no one wanted to think of the armageddon that would take place if Tom Brady ever got hurt?

That is the same reason why Bruce Arians had to Buy top notch free agent QB’s to have any success.

I a few hours joebucsfan will be letting me know if the stack went to 3 today and with the 1’s to boot.

“Canales believes players first have to stack snaps.”

No shït. Trask had none with the starters his first two years. Not even a lousy series in a lousy preseason game. What kind of player development is that? It’s not. Which convinces me that Brady was behind it all. He wanted to win Super Bowls, he wanted a veteran as his backup, and wasn’t going to put up with a rookie getting in the way.

  6. Craig Says:

Bigger than who he is throwing to is that he now belongs, and has a coach who believes in him.

I don’t know what kind of coaching he had his first two years, but he knew it would get him nowhere. Now it can.

Jalen Hurts had a rough first year, but had a coach that believed he did enough to be the starter the next season. That confidence was paid off and instilled a confidence in Hurts that will keep them a contender for a while.

I hope that Canales can get and hold those kinds of results. It can only do the team good.

  7. Oneilbuc Says:

What if the bucs would have let him practice with the ones the past 2 years instead of letting a first round bust take first team reps in practice. Kyle Trask probably would have been ready this year.

  8. Jenkins Says:

Craig Says: “Jalen Hurts had a rough first year, but had a coach that believed he did enough to be the starter the next season. That confidence has paid off.”

Excellent point. Unfortunately, if Trask had a rough GAME, I doubt JBF and the FSU fan bois would give Trask a second GAME, much less a second SEASON. That’s why Bucs quarterbacks die here, or flourish elsewhere.

Jenkins. Good point bro I’ve been saying that’s been the problem with the bucs and developing quarterbacks. That is why they have never developed a quarterback in franchise history!! I agree with you 💯 persent bro!!!

  11. Jenkins Says:

Oneilbuc. Yup. If I were Trask I would be thinking in the back of my mind where I might want to go if I get mismanaged another season.

  12. Jenkins Says:

    @Craig

Actually, Jalen Hurts had a rough first TWO seasons. He blossomed in his THIRD season. I don’t see the Bucs doing that with ANYBODY.

  13. Rosadog Says:

Players develop at their own pace. It is still common practice to sit a rookie QB to acclimate to the speed of the NFL.

Maybe the timing is what it is…

Regardless, Mr. Seven Rings got us a trophy and some great memories. Thank you.

Time to move on! I hope Trask lives up to this camp hype! Lord knows what kind of crap shoot the draft is for solid QB.

  14. Greg The Truth Says:

Mayfield is a backup QB, but even a backup may win a few games with the weapons the Bucs have. But why waste time with a retread QB when we have a younger QB that might be a starter if given the chance.

Mayfield had a loaded Browns team with a great defense and running game. They had the weapons to throw to. They decided they would rather send a bunch of draft pics and ton of money to a QB who couldn’t even play his first year because of sexual assault claims. He did nothing for Carolina except get them the top draft pic, then went to a loaded Rams team who didnt want him even as a backup. If we had a better starting QB thats one thing but why would we not start Trask over this guy?

  15. Bucs since 76 Says:

If Trask and Mayfield are equal they should start Trask.
    1. He has more upside.
    2. He gives them the best chance to have a winning season.
    3. He will sell more tickets and game jerseys.
    4. If Trask sucks after two games the can put in Mayfield. However,if Mayfield sucks they probably wait until the bye. If they have a 1-3 or 0-4 at that point it will be hard for them to recover.

  16. Trask To The Future Says:

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that Kyle Trask has all the upside. Still on a rookie deal, younger, and hasn’t had a real chance to play and see what he can do.

The league knows what Mayfield can do, hence the reason his market value was peanuts.

  17. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

It’s still early and anything can happen. Well, almost anything. It will be a lot different in 10 days at the first preseason game but I am very excited. There will be a lot of learning going on after that game and into the next one. I’m not really expecting much separation in any direction and fairly confident the decision will be Monday before the Vikings. Or not.

  18. Duane Says:

I would hope that Dave Cannales is smart enough to not put the whole weight of the offense on the shoulders of either quarterback, and expect either guy to replicate the GOAT’s throwing the ball 35-45 times a game, playing hero ball.

And based on everything we’ve heard and seen about Cannales and Bowles both wanting a more balanced offense, with more production in the running game, seems to bear that out … that Canales IS smart enough.

Given that, as long as either or both quarterbacks take good care of the ball, and don’t try to be the hero of every play, then we should be confident that the rest of the offensive squad can do their jobs, moving the chains and scoring points … with the defense also doing their jobs.

  19. TB2023 Says:

    Is a 17 game season!

If the season is over at a 0-4 start, then fire everyone at the bye week. Lol

    Smh

  20. Tbbucs3 Says:

“He will sell more tickets and game jerseys.”

On what planet will Trask sell more tickets and jerseys than Mayfield?? On gator land?

  21. Jenkins Says:

Tbbucs3 Says:”On what planet will Trask sell more tickets and jerseys than Mayfield?”

He will. All the Gator fans will buy a Trask jersey and show up to cheer him on and all the FSU fans like you will put on your old smelly Jameis jerseys and show up to cheer against the Bucs. 😛

  22. Duane Says:

Tbucs3 – very damn few players sell NFL tickets, the GOAT being the only one like that we ever had on the Bucs since their inception in 1976.

But, winning games damn sure sells tickets. And if the Bucs are winning, the butts will be in the seats, regardless of who is under center.

  23. Rocket68 Says:

People trashing Mayfield in Cleveland is ridiculous. He came in as a rookie and had a 27/13 TD to interception ratio.
    year two 22/21
    year three 26/8
year four 17/13 (gutting it out, playing half the year with a bad arm)

Carolina was a dysfunctional organization – not sure it is/was a good situation for anyone over the last three years.

Not saying Mayfield should be the starter, but he is a lot better than people give him credit for – especially given the Cleveland coaching carnival. In Tampa, he will have better bookend receivers than he has ever had in the NFL.

And when guys start getting hit for real at NLF pace, then we know what they are made of. Glad Trask has made strides, we will need him (we will likely end up playing both QBs this year).

  24. HC Grover Says:

Let Trask start and take his learning lumps.

  25. westernbuc Says:

If Mayfield is a backup (as the Trask crowd is claiming) then we’re going to be really good at that position.

Let’s see how everyone does against opposing teams with a real pass rush.

This team will contend for the division title

  26. Michael Says:

Trask has beaten the odds over and over . The dude hung 48 points on then #1 Alabama . He was a Heisman finalist. There is talent there . After watching this young man for years it would not surprise me one bit if he won the job and even became a top 10 QB in the NFL. If anyone could do it this guy could . I heard from a certain someone he has opened a lot of eyes in practice .

Good point. I said the same thing with Jameis. We gave that man too much rope. I wanted him when he was drafted. But by year three, it was obvious that he did not have the goods.

Instead of Vita Vea, if we had moved on from Jameis, we could have had Josh Allen on this team.

Although, there were the idiots acting like Tom Brady could not play when the Bucs got him, it would have been also nice to have the long-term solution like Josh Allen at QB.

I agree. Matt Rhule was the worst offensive coach in the league. No quarterback ever looked good in his system. Sean McVay understood that although Mayfield was not elite, he was quite capable.

I am in a minority. I believe more good offenses are good because they throw the ball well. We have Evans, we have Godwin. Some young pass catching guys like Otton and White look like they have more than just a clue to how to get open and move the chains.

    I don’t want passing 35 to 45 times a game. But 32 to 38 times a game yes.

I will be immediately bored and expect the Bucs to lose most of their games, if they are forcing the run 28 to 30 times a game. I would be happy with 22 to 26 rushes a game.

That gets us at 60 percent passing and 40 percent rushing and seems to fit our talent level better.

I agree, if they’re averaging 4 or less per carry.
On the other hand, nothing gets the crowd more excited than a long run.
String a few of those together and the stands will be rocking.

geno711 … ‘That gets us at 60 percent passing and 40 percent rushing and seems to fit our talent level better.’

I agree Geno, but prefer a range (40-50% rushing) instead of a finite number (QB dependent). When I look at some of the perennially successful coaches, Seattle’s Pete Carroll comes to mind (he seems like a good example of a defensive coach who’s been successful long-term). He (and others) seem to fall mostly in the 40-50% range for some reason.

Seahawks had Russell Wilson as their QB from 2012 to 2021. He was a decent run-around QB & a decent passer. Pete Carroll was his HC that whole time. Here’s what the Seahawks averaged year to year as a running percentage with Wilson at the helm:

    o 2021: 43.3% … 7-10 record (no playoffs)
    o 2020: 40.2% … 12-4 record (playoffs; lost Rnd 1)
    o 2019: 46.0% … 11-5 record (playoffs; lost Rnd 2)
    o 2018: 52.8% … 10-6 record (playoffs; lost Rnd 1)
    o 2017: 40.6% … 9-7 record (no playoffs)
    o 2016: 39.9% … 10-5-1 record (playoffs; lost Rnd 2)
    o 2015: 48.3% … 10-6 record (playoffs; lost Rnd 2)
    o 2014: 51.4% … 12-4 record (playoffs; lost Super Bowl)
    o 2013: 52.3% … 13-3 record (playoffs; won Super Bowl)
    o 2012: 55.0% … 11-5 record (playoffs; lost Rnd 2)

Noticed that in Wilson’s earlier years the Seahawks emphasized the run a lot more than they did later on (when Wilson became a better passer?). Kinda thinking that we might see something similar play out this season with the Bucs, although with our receivers we’ll probably be in the 40-45% range rushing. I’m still wondering if we have the horses in the RB stable to pull that off. Only time will tell.

Remember when Christensen stated how he simply couldn’t work reps in for Trask? That’s some pathetic coaching. There’s a reason BA has never held a post for more than 4 years (and most have been 2 or less). He’s a con man who follows talent and never really develops anone other than ringers. I’ve said it umpteen times at least, Christensen is the luckiest man in football (Luck, Manning, AND Brady). No ambition, compared to Canales who was choping at the bit for a Coordinator job, Clyde has a 40 year career trying to hide. We all remember his pedestrian offense as OC for the bucs in 2001. I’m always amazed how this site reveres Clyde. Any one of you could have equaled his accomplishments…just be a brown-nosed yes man and fetch a good cup of coffee
