Kyle Trask Has Interception-Less Streak Snapped

August 8th, 2023

It’s over.

The streak is over.

Today wasn’t the greatest of days for Bucs quarterback Kyle Trask as he had three interceptions. In an otherwise solid morning, Trask saw his interception-less streak of seven straight practices end on Day 11 of training camp.

It wasn’t like his counterpart, Baker Mayfield, fared better.

Mayfield, who may have been having his best practice as a Bucs quarterback, had two picks.

Trask’s first pick came during an 11-on-11 period. It looked to be a classic quarterback/receiver miscommunication.

Trask threw to the left sideline for Mike Evans and Evans cut in. It appeared Trask thought Evans was going to cut out. The result was a Jamel Dean pick-six. Trask’s second interception also came during the red zone period.

Trask’s second interception was when he tried to get the ball to Chris Godwin to the left far corner of the end zone in red zone drills and Keenan Isaac was in perfect position to grab the pass.

Trask tried to connect with David Wells in the back of the end zone under the goalposts late in practice during goal line drills. Safety Nolan Turner was roaming the back line and grabbed Trask’s pass.

Mayfield’s first interception came in 7-on-7 seven drills and may not have been his fault. Mayfield threw for undrafted rookie receiver Rakim Jarrett to the right and there was a collision that forced the ball to pop up. Devin White raced in and grabbed he loose ball.

White’s interception may have been his first splash play of training camp.

Mayfield’s second interception was just downright dumb and fully on him.

In goal line drills, Mayfield had Mike Evans in the far left corner of the end zone and inexplicably threw short rather than high for the 6-5 Bucs star.

The short throw allowed Zyon McCollum a chance to undercut Evans’ route and grab the ball.

Why in the world would you throw short to a 6-5 receiver in the corner of the end zone? Throw it to where only Evans can get it. Given Evans’ hops and wingspan, that’s a decent-sized target area. #Sad

    Mayfield sucks!

  2. realbucsfan Says:

joe to me it seems you favor mayfield way more then trask and that confuses me , wouldn’t we all want the qb that could lead us to the most wins ? he’s also younger , cheap contract and is still under contract for another season . this is his first bad day of camp and I noticed the first thing you mention is him and his turnovers . but when mayfield has 10 is no biggie ?

  3. Danny Says:

So that’s what, Trask 3 INT and Mayfield 9 INT? Still a pretty big difference.

  4. Stormy Says:

The Bucs’ long term future QB is still playing college ball this year.

  5. JD Still Says:

When you make the headline for the newsflash that you were intercepted in practice for the first time in more than a week , that’s not a bad thing!

  6. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Is the defense getting as familiar with the plays as the offense is?

  7. nooyoker Says:

Joe, how many picks did Brady throw in training camp? Curious.

  8. Bee Says:

Every QB has a down day. Not big on the ints but at least he threw lots of TDs including a 50 yd TD to Evans.

  9. Dwayne Cone Says:

What I took from Bowles Presser after practice the coverage was real good today
and some of the Interceptions came down to eventually having to throw the ball somewhere.

Have to look at Joe’s Notes to get a better picture.

  10. Tbbucs3 Says:

Can guarantee that Bucs coaches aren’t basing this QB competition on who throws the fewest INTS, any NFL backup can go out there and simply not throw any interceptions….sounds like Mayfield is doing better making plays downfield which is why he’s getting the start Friday.

  11. nooyoker Says:

Tbbucs3 doesn’t like the INT stat now, but he will if Baker overtakes Kyle. 😛

  12. JD Still Says:

When you headline an article because it’s news when you are intercepted in practice for the first time in more than a week , that’s not a bad thing!

  13. A Bucs Fan Says:

Coach Bowles said that he was happy with int’s but that some were because they forcing the QB’s to throw in last play of the game simulations.

Mayfield is still making the same mistakes with bad reads.

if the Bucs long term QB is playing college ball and they draft him iin April how can he start next year wiith no experience?

  15. Joe Says:

Not sure how you come to that conclusion. Joe is just typing what Joe is seeing.

To be blunt, after watching 11 training camp practices, the Bucs quarterback for 2024 should be playing on Saturdays this fall.

if the Bucs long term QB is playing college ball and they draft him iin April how can he start next year wiith no experience?

If the Bucs are drafting a quarterback in the first round in April, that likely means the Bucs will have a first-year coach who won’t be in imminent danger of getting canned after the season with a losing record.

  17. Joe Says:

No clue. Joe wasn’t keeping track of them because only a mental patient thought Brady was in any sort of competition to start.

  18. Lord Cornelius Says:

Excited for the defense at least lol. The mis-communication INT is more forgiveable than throwing low to evans

  19. Kgh4life Says:

Reminds me of Jamies and Fitzpatrick, picks galore. It’s gonna be a long season.

  20. Joe Says:

Is the defense getting as familiar with the plays as the offense is?

    Pretty sure this is accurate.

  21. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Yep, it is my understanding that the defense learns the plays, also. Seeing them everyday. I’ve heard this from players and coaches during those interviews, over the years.

Also, these players learn each other’s tendencies, due to repetition and probably film. Or they should, (my opinion)

  22. Pewter Power Says:

Don’t read too much into the picks at this point folks. Our defense has seen Dave canales scheme for long enough to figure out how to attack it. The focus now switches to preseason games and this joint practice with the jets because the definitely have a good defense.

Hard to gauge success when defenders know your route tree just as good as the receivers.

  23. ATLBuc Says:

I’m glad the streak is over and hope he focuses on his mechanics instead of a training camp interceptionless streak. That could be distracting

  24. 1#bucsfan Says:

Don’t like hearing about both these guys turning the ball over but it is practice. Looking forward to seeing these guys in a preseason game. Get it together trask field lol

  25. Buc You Says:

    LOL… #sad = JBF hearts Trask

    .
    .

Looks like he commented on the headline instead of reading the whole bit first. Freshman mistake.

  27. Defense Rules Says:

Practice is the time to explore your limits IMO, so periodic INTs shouldn’t be all that concerning. For any of our QBs. It’ll be far more telling to see how our offense performs in preseason Games 1 & 2. Apparently both Mayfield & Trask will get equal shots to strut their stuff.

  28. R0n@Tampa Says:

The ints have no reflection on the qb. This just shows how elite the Bucs defense is. Remember these qbs are going against the top defense in the nfl.May even be the best of bucs all time. Let’s give both qbs some slack.

  29. Power Of Pewter Says:

I remember the big Josh Freeman / Byron Leftwich QB competition. Us Buc’s fans sat on the edge of our seats with bated breath waiting to see who our franchise QB would be. It was all a ginned-up charade, they both kind of sucked. I get the same vibe now. A QB ‘competition’ is an attempt to stir up fan interest, and give writers/pundits something to talk about. But the reality is what we all know, but are reluctant to admit… it’s tank season, and Bucs starting QB of 2024 is playing college ball this fall.

  30. The Beer Whisperer Says:

The bad news: The QB ceiling has been slightly lowered.

The good news: The floor has stayed the same, (hopefully)

  31. 1#bucsfan Says:

Ron@tampa are you old enough to remember the late 90s and early 2000s Bucs defense ? They set records for the history of the nfl. Our defense right now is not on their level. Don’t get me wrong I’m hoping for a top 5 defense but our defense from the past scared coaches and players. They had hitters that would knock you back a few years they had coverage guys and they had pass rushers that ate QBs for lunch a take their lunch money and they had run stuffers.

  32. Bucs56 Says:

At first I thought start Mayfield. That way he does well you run with him and Trask comes in with no pressure. Forget it. Start Trask and give him the job. Mayfield plays and we need a QB next year.

  33. Brandon Says:

It’s funny. People that want Trask think Joe favors Mayfield and people that want Mayfield think he favors Trask. Seems he’s doing his job… and also some of you are way too sensitive. May the best man win. I hope someone runs away with it and shows the other side was wrong. My side is the Bucs. Some of you hope the team sucks if your QB isn’t playing… how selfish.

  34. SlyPirate Says:

I don’t mind when the defense has good days.

  35. View from 132 Says:

His choice of number was not smart.
    Sincerely,
    Chris Simms’ Spleen

  36. Joe Says:

It’s funny. People that want Trask think Joe favors Mayfield and people that want Mayfield think he favors Trask. Seems he’s doing his job…

That’s the way Joe is looking at it. 🙂

  37. garro Says:

I’m pretty sure that Trasks last two INTs were last play red zone. Thus not as big a deal. Score or game over is a different thing than regular red zone.

    Go Bucs!

  38. Donald G Says:

#1BUCSFAN You are spot on. That defense we had back then was downright scary. I remember a saying from opposing teams it was Score 10 and win against Tampa bay If we had a good offense no telling how many Superbowl’s we would have won
