Jason Licht: “I Like Ginger”

August 30th, 2023

Jason Licht type.

Maybe it is a good thing Bucs Hall of Famer Rondé Barber and Jason Licht are such good friends. Joe doesn’t think too many of the Bucs’ pen and mic club would get away with sternly directing the AC/DC-loving general manager to be straight with him (or her) on a live broadcast.

The Bucs’ offensive line became a subject of discussion during the Bucs’ last worthless preseason game on Saturday night, seen and heard on WFLA-TV Channel 8. Barber was the game analyst.

As his custom, Licht appears in the broadcast booth in the second half.

There, Barber wanted answers about the juggling Bucs coach Todd Bowles and Licht did with the offensive line, specifically the right side.

Rondé Barber: Moving Luke [Goedeke] to right tackle allows you to draft [Cody] Mauch to play right guard. Talk about the rookie starting at that position because Luke Goedeke did it last year and did not fare well — be honest!

Jason Licht: Not all players do. Ali Marpet was one that did. They are all not wired the same. Some need the extra time. We think Luke has made great strides this year and Cody, right now has had a helluva camp. We thought Cody could play guard and center. He has a bright future at center as well. You don’t want to overload a rookie. But [playing center] may be something in his future. Right now Robert Hainsey is holding that position down really well.

Licht then admitted he has a type: ornery small school offensive linemen with red hair.

“I like Ginger,” Licht said.

(Well, Joe is a Mary Anne kind of guy. Yeah, Joe is dating himself.)

The way Licht discussed Mauch, it sure sounded as if he wants to give Mauch a spin at center in the future.

That might be a smart move. But first, let’s see if Mauch can hold the fort down at right guard. He’s already at a disadvantage on his left side with Ryan Jensen unable to return from his destroyed knee.

Real shame about Jensen. When he suited up for the cowboys game, I thought we were passed the injury drama. Hope Logan Hall ends up being a generational talent, or drafting him might be the most costly mistake the bucs ever made. The poor man just signed a monster deal and convinced Tom to play out his contract, only to get wrecked by an overly excitable rookie.

I dont’t like second guessing Licht on offfensive linemen, but if Mauch lights it up at RG… why in the world would he want to experiment with center? He did that with Marpet and it did not go to well.

If Hainsey can hold up at center or maybe even become a good one it makes no sense. Draft a center next year or get a proven FA I he does not.

Option C is maybe Jensen has a miraculous recovery…wishful thiinking but I would never bet against the big ginger.

    Go Bucs!

Mary Anne here. I think you need to do a Mary Anne or Ginger Poll.

  14. Hodad Says:

Dating yourself, does that have two different meanings Joe?

  15. Buddy777 Says:

Ginger or Mary Anne is a false choice. Why not both?

  16. Larrd Says:

Overexcitable rookies are a good thing. It’s idiotic to blame Logan Hall for Jensen’s injury. Injuries happen every day.

Soccer might be a good option.

  17. NutterBuccer Says:

Hainssy through future at center. Hrs gonna have a good season. If the oline stays healthy I think they surprise this year.

Probably because it is harder to find a good center than a good guard. If Mauch can become the next Jensen, we’d be set for years at center.

  23. PNW Buc Says:

    Mary Ann for sure…
Jeffery Becker went Mrs. Howell, you dirty boy!!! 🤣🤣🤣

  24. Salary Cap Hell Says:
