How Did Kyle Trask Take The Bad News?

August 23rd, 2023

Backup QB Kyle Trask.

So before practice Tuesday morning at One Buc Palace, Bucs coach Todd Bowles made the decision to start the season with Baker Mayfield behind center.

Later after practice, Mayfield noted Bowles first informed Kyle Trask of his decision and then told Mayfield.

Per Bowles, Trask handled the news like a pro, in part because of their bond.

“Me and Kyle have a very good relationship,” Bowles explained. “We talk all the time. We’re very honest with where we are with our relationship.

“I’m very excited about what he’s done and where he’s headed. He needs to be ready to play at any time, because if Baker [Mayfield] goes down, he’ll be the guy.”

“This Joe” has a hunch Trask likely starts a game before Halloween. This is not a knock on Mayfield or suggesting he may get hurt, but if Mayfield struggles and/or starts turning the ball over, and more importantly the Bucs are losing, Bowles might try to shake things up with a quarterback change.

Remember, Bowles needs wins if he wants to return stay on as head coach next season.

Since Team Glazer has owned the Bucs, only one coach has survived back-to-back losing seasons and that guy won a Super Bowl for Team Glazer. His name is Chucky.

Bowles doesn’t have Chucky’s street cred.

How many college and SEC passing records do you hold?

  4. WyomingJoe Says:

Joe, sure it’s a knock on Mayfield. Who are you kidding? But that’s ok, I expected it.

  5. bucsfaninOregon Says:

OK Gator nuts, try not to slash your wrists over this announcement. And, it is not a government deep state plot.

Your hero will eventually get in since any QB behind what looks like our OL is going to be will get blasted eventually.

  6. Duane Says:

bucfaninOregon – boy you sure don’t get NFL football do you, or the Florida Gators either. A lot of Nole alumni were pulling for Trask, as well as a lot of neither Gators nor Noles .. you know, because like WHAT THE HELL DOES COLLEGE FOOTBALL HAVE TO DO WITH THE NFL?

Grow up, or grow a brain, either would do.

  7. LOL Says:

    Gus.

Im sorry your son didn’t win the job. You should try talking to the coach to see if you can get him some playing time 😉

    LOL

  8. Couch Fan Says:

“Remember Bowles needs wins” so he gifted the job to an experienced loser. LMAO. Makes perfect sense.

  9. Pewter Power Says:

Before Halloween no way. They could easily use the excuse of offense trying to gel. Besides what everyone outside the building sees is not what the Bucs may see. YOU GUYS may need to see Trask but they do everyday otherwise with did Blaine Freaking Gabbert take his snaps in the meaningless Atlanta game last year

  10. Gus Says:

bucfaninOregon is an FSU alumnus who had to go clear across the country to find a job.

  11. Gus Says:

Pewter Power Says: “”Why did Blaine Freaking Gabbert take his snaps in the meaningless Atlanta game last year?”

Because they had a playoff game the next week and wanted Gabbert to be ready in case Brady went down? Naaahhh. Couldn’t be. To Semenhole fan bois the answer is always that a Gator sucks.

  12. Pewter Power says: Says:

Trash went back to his trailer park, snorted Crystal meth ,then got down on his knees & proposed to his younger niece ( 13) & is happily engaged !!!!! Gotta love the south !!!!

  13. BA’s Red Pen Says:

They will both start games with unimpressive results.
Bucs Time Loop. Change the quarterback, fire the head coach, change the quarterback, fire the coach. It’s a Bucs’ Life. LFG

  17. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Smart money and history says BM will fail and Trask will go on to win a SB with another team with better owners.

This team is soooo poorly run.
One brief 2 year bright spot since the brats took over for Dad.
The rest has been a laughable shiite show complete w ridiculous woke and insincere ad campaigns…..It’s a Bucs Life baby!

These owners care only about money and are anything but transparent

  18. Sly Pirate Says:

If I’m Trask, all I have to do is wait and train. This is the NFL (not for long). Either my time comes with Tampa or another team. He just has to keep getting better and keep a positive attitude. Both will make him more valuable.

  19. Vlad The Impaler Says:

…and the 2 year bright spot is 100% due to Licht hiring Arians and the 2 of them getting the GOAT.

  20. Vlad The Impaler Says:

    @Lets go Bucs
Wow! Classy bro. I can see that you have a college education
(fyi I am not a gator and could care less about what college Trask went to)

  21. Canabuc Says:

Amazing some of the childish comments that are here on this board.

Really lets go Bucs that’s the most intelligent thing you have to say?

I am a box fan I do not live in Florida and do not really give a damn about the Seminoles or the Gators over any other college team.

I root for this team and whichever player is starting a quarterback I will hope they succeed.

I still do believe however that task offers better upside long-term. I think Baker however does make for the right choice the more I think about it. This is the choice that protects and covers Todd Bowles’ ass. You see they have a bye week week 5. So if they start the season and the team doesn’t look very good and Baker plays poorly he has the excuse that he went with the veteran leader and things didn’t work out. He can then always make a switch after the bye week in an effort to see what the team has in the inexperienced quarterback.

However if you were to start Kyle Trask and the team does poorly and then he has to go to the veteran everybody would question the move as a poor coach’s decision which would inevitably lead to his downfall and last The team suddenly made a spectacular turnaround and made the playoffs.

Like Joe has said I think we will see Kyle Trask start some football games this year. It will either be because of bakers injuries which have let him to missing games in each of the last three seasons or due to performance issues due to taking too many sacks and turning the ball over too often which has been another issue for him.

  22. Bee Says:

Why does everyone keep saying it’s hard to go from Trask to Baker. The thing is you don’t!

You start Trask and let him play the whole season no matter what happens. See how Trask handles the pressure. If he plays well, we have a QB. If he doesn’t, we’ll draft another one.

Makes no sense to draft a guy in the 2nd round and not see what he can do with the starters. It’s a waste of a draft pick. This organization makes no sense.

  23. Craig Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Kyle had a long talk with the Patriots.

It is too early to tell whether Hot Toddie was a job saving genius or a total washout.

If Duh Baker washes out and Hot Toddie pulls him and Kyle blows a few doors in he might be considered a genius.

I Duh Baker is okay and like Jameis has a chance at the end of the season to get in the playoffs, and fails. It will be a washout. Baker will want a big payday or walk. Trask will be asking for a trade, because he can find a team that can really see his potential.

That will be the dawn of a new lost decade.

  24. WyomingJoe Says:

A few minutes ago, I decided to improve my life by doing two things: reducing my sugar intake and, more importantly, getting off this site because it’s filled with pessimists and I have better ways to spend my time.

  25. Slacker Says:

Just need to get through this season, rid of Bowles and all the dead cap and start something next year.

  26. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

I really could see them not counting last season against Bowles given Arians staying so late, and all the nonsense Brady brought to the team.

I hope not, I don’t think Bowles is a good head coach. It would be nice to be proved wrong about him though.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Trask will get his shot…but it won’t be Bowles decision.

  28. Statisticly Insignificant Reader Says:

Love this site for the Joe’s articles. Many comments are very good. The childish bull spit in the comments, certainly not, Replying to it only keeps perpetuating it.
Let the Bucs games begin!! (trying to not say go Bucs, Happy?)

  29. WiseCrack Says:

Word to the wise for all of you we taught’s. You can’t keep being mean and nasty towards others and truly expect to be respected or taken seriously.

Then again, JBF seems to be becoming a haven for you trolls and the Joe’s have your back.

Meanwhile, real fans are learning to ignore your post and soon to be JBF I am sure.

This is the year is the worst the comment section has ever been on this site since it has been up.

  30. Don’t tell me it’s raining Says:

I hope the Bucs surprise everyone this year with Mayfield as QB1 and “this Joe” is wrong about his Halloween prediction. But I can’t believe “this moderator” would post the above comments about Trask. Thinking Mayfield is the better choice for this offense is one thing. But saying that kind of crap about Trask is completely out of line and “this moderator” should be ashamed for letting it happen.

  31. The silent Majority Says:

Normally I don’t go down this path But man…

Ok then Wyoming. Good Bye hypocrite!

You have been throwing stones for over a month and now you’ve decided your just too soft to take what you’ve been dishing out… Everybody else is a pessimist? Yeah OK sure…

Nobody forced you to make sure you have plenty of enemies. that was your choice and you have the small sack to blame others for your constant aggressive baiting and Non Stop under handed, and Snide comments…? Like I said, yeah, ok, sure thing sweetheart

You have Completely let down ALL of the “love me some Mayfield J strappers” everywhere.

    gtfoh pusky!

Apologies to Everyone else whether you back Mayfield or Trask, But this guy… This nasty guy has it coming!

  37. HC Grover Says:

    WyomingJoe Says:

Joe, sure it’s a knock on Mayfield. Who are you kidding? But that’s ok, I expected it.

64 Quarterbacks started games last year. Only 3 because they were replaced by Backups.

Based on those numbers Bakers chances of missing a start are pretty good.

Surely there is no way he could be replaced by a Back Up two years in a row.

  39. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

    Gaytor bois are heartbroken

  40. optimisticbucsfan Says:

SO, Mayfield has looked barely average in practice and in preseason.

WHich means the Bucs are HOPING AND PRAYING for Marty to pick Mayfield up in the Delorean and go back in time to another place and time.

That ship has sailed. Shame on Licht…HOPING AND PRAYING. SMDH.

This is Licht’s last year thankfully.

  41. CChead Says:

Bowles will be sent packing Dec 10 after a loss to ATL. I just can’t see a way for him to make it through the year.

  42. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

I spent good money on the ticket and gear this year and now I have to watch Baker embarrass this franchise and suffer taunts from friends.

Central Market makes fancy brown bags – if I put that on my head at least people will know I’m not a broke d!ck while wearing my new Bucs shirts.

  43. Tbbucs3 Says:

Seems like Trask handled it much better than his emotionally fragile gator fan supporters…..

  44. Mike S Says:

From the description of practice it seems like the air has been let out of Trask because of this BS fake QB competition.

This is a comedy of errors.

  45. Defense Rules Says:

Buc1987 … ‘WyomingJoe….it’s not easy to walk away. I’ve been here 10 years.’

If he truly loves the Bucs, he won’t walk away Buc1987; he’ll just change his handle like so many others have done. On every sports site, there are many who really love talking about football, but just as many who just want to whine for the sake of whining. They rarely last on any site.

The Joes BTW do a great job of putting ‘all-things-Bucs’ before us each & every day; 365 days a year. Some things some of us agree with, some things we don’t. Thankfully JoeBucsFan is a BLOG, meaning that we can interact & exchange comments not only with each other, but also with the 2 Joes. I admit that I probably nit-pick on some of the stances that they take as much as anyone, but I try at least to do it respectfully (although admittedly sometimes I’m about as tactful as a pit viper, but I’m working on it).

I keep a sign in my office that says ‘Enjoy the Journey’ to remind me that every day is a blessing. One day at a time.

  46. Mike S Says:

Tbbucs3 Baker ain’t the guy. This is going to be a disaster. Its actually less about Trask not getting the gig and more about the looming disaster on the horizon.

I can’t believe Bowles actually gifted the job to this guy after the turd he laid last year.

At least make him earn it. They handed the job to him on day 1. I can’t figure it out.

  47. Mike S Says:

DR – its just football. Why should I change my handle? Because I thought Trask was the better choice? LOL.

    Pretty weak.

I’m owning it. Lets watch how this plays out.

  48. Tampafan1996 Says:

I agree with everyone saying that Trask should start, maybe not the whole season but a big part of it would make sense. The team is able to see what they have and if it doesn’t work out then we move on.
The problem lies with the owners. Because they are inpatient and not willing to wait, it’s forcing Bowles to take a safer approach and play the veteran and if it doesn’t pan out then you make the switch. This is his job, career, livelihood and he’s not going to gamble with it and I think if we were in his shoes we would do the same.
Stop blaming Bowles, look at the underlying reason why he’s making the decision to go with the veteran. It’s the owners who have created this nasty carrousel of HC and QB’s.

KT is really sad!! Why you ask. We’ll, KT gets to work out and train with a highly paid professional training staff. He also gets to play a kids game that he truly loves instead of going to work 9 to 5 every day. Oh yah, I almost forgot got …KT gets the best possible seat to a NFL football game every week! Oh, and most importantly he collects millions of dollars for doing so! All of this makes KT sad!!

Blaine Gabbert has not taught KT well!! Blaine has a similar work situation! Blaine’s not sad, he’s laughing all the way to the bank! Actually him and his wife are looking at some Ocean front property that recently became available in Maui! Blaine feels great! It’s been so long since a linebacker blindsided him. And best of all he gets to watch Patrick Mahomes play every week!! Sweet!!

  55. Oneilbuc Says:

I told y’all that the bucs will never developed a quarterback and Kyle Trask has become another victim that was drafted by the bucs and his career has been destroyed by the bucs!! Lol 🤣🤣
