Tirstan Wirfs’ Progress Assessed

Tristan Wirfs

Buccaneers All-Pro right tackle turned left tackle Tristan Wirfs said he planned to live in the gym this summer and work on his craft — a new craft at a new position.

Joe has no doubt that Wirfs stayed committed, so yesterday Joe asked head coach Todd Bowles to talk about Wirfs’ progress and whether he sees improvement at left tackle since the spring.

“Yeah, Tristan’s a worker anyway. As soon as you challenge him to do something, he’s going to work his tail off to do that,” Bowles said. “He’s adjusted well over there, I think. You know, there’s probably still some kinks he needs to work out, probably when we get in pads, from a hand placement standpoint, but I think he’s done an excellent job so far.”

Wirfs certainly looks comfortable in drills and with his position group, but that’s not a Vikings edge rusher that will be bearing down on him in 44 days.

The Joe typing here isn’t worried about Wirfs. He has the skills and work ethic to thrive at left tackle. If he’s just average and has to move back to right tackle next year to maximize his ability, then so be it.

Wirfs is an outstanding athlete and I’m confident he will be just fine at LT. Can’t wait to see how the new o-line operates. That’s a lot of beef there.

  2. Hodad Says:

Or Joe 345 lb Wirfs will be bearing down on some poor Viking edge rusher! We’re going to see a side of Wirfs we haven’t seen before, his run blocking. Same with Goedeke, Mauch, they are going to be doing more run blocking then pass blocking. We’re not placing a sitting duck in the pocket 45 times a game anymore.

  3. BucU Says:

Tristan Wirfs is the very last thing I’m worried about on this team. He’s elite. Right side left side.

  4. DoooshLaRue Says:

This is the Joe I like.
    Rational and reasonable.

  5. Wild Bill Says:

Wirfs is a baller who could play any line position if he had to!

  6. Beej Says:

He’s best right tackle in the league, but the LEFT tackles get the attention (and the money) As competitive as he is, he’d want to go there

  7. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Last one on the roster to worry about he’ll be fine

  8. Dooley Says:

Wirfs & Goedeke worked out together over the 6-week break which was awesome to hear.

  9. Winny Testaverde Says:

The Giants made fellow draft classmate Andrew Thomas ( who started slow and seemed average relatively speaking ) the highest paid o-lineman in history a few days ago. Wirfs is going to get paid handsomely in the near future.

  10. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Wirl has above average physical skills. He is also very smart, has great hip movement and well balanced. I seriously doubt he would end up just average.

  11. JimBobBuc Says:

I can’t wait to see Wirfs destroying edge guys on the wide zone runs. I’m more concerned about Goedeke, especially on the straight dropbacks. I was surprised Seattle used quite a bit of straight dropbacks and fewer boots/waggles than I was expecting.

  12. Fred McNeil Says:

I have no doubt that Wirfs will be at least Pro Bowl if not All Pro.

  13. Fred McNeil Says:

    Goedeke worries me.

  14. CTBucs Says:

How about an extension? Every tackle that signs, the price goes up. Thomas from NYG got insane money, wish we had locked up Wirfs sooner…

  15. Sly Pirate Says:

ONE THING WIRFS HAS GOING FOR HIM

As JTS said earlier in the offseason, Wirfs is still a really big body to have to run around.

  16. Kidfloflo Says:

Wirfs and his agent know Left tackles make the most money, so damn right he will be up to the task!

    Let the Pads begin!
    LFG

    Go Bucs!
