Promotion Possiblity At Edge Rusher

July 11th, 2023

Change coming?

A highly seasoned Bucs observer and a friend of Todd Bowles says edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka could be headed for the bench.

With just 8 sacks in 34 games representing 1,403 regular-season snaps (plus a sackless and quiet postseason résumé), Tryon-Shoyinka is in danger of losing his starting job, says Pat Kirwan of SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Kirwan co-hosts Movin’ The Chains and had Bowles on the air as a weekly guest last season. The former Jets linebackers coach and personnel chief also is a former Bucs scout who lives in Southwest Florida. He’s no disconnected clown spewing hot takes.

During a recent analysis of NFC edge rushers, Kirwan noted Tryon-Shoyinka simply hasn’t had enough prodcution and he’s reached the put-up-or-step-aside point of his Bucs career.

Kirwan views edge rusher Anthony Nelson as an elite backup but capable of getting moved into Tryon-Shoyinka’s starting spot if Nelson’s production continues to eclipse that of the 2021 first-round pick.

Joe has no illusions that Nelson is a stud-in-waiting edge rusher, but he has produced — in the run game and via the pass rush. Nelson has as many tackles for loss — and more sacks — the past two seasons has Tyron-Shoyinka in a heck of a lot fewer snaps. Those numbers don’t lie.

Kirwan said a training camp battle could emerge between the two but more likely Tryon-Shoyinka will keep his starting job and get a little more time to show he can play up to his draft status. If not, Kirwan says a switch could early in the season.

Joe agrees wholeheartedly.

The Bucs are a good team on which to be an edge rusher. The inside rush is strong, as is the secondary. And Bowles gets creative with his blitzes to flush quarterbacks.

Tryon-Shoyinka simply has to step up in a hurry. Thirty-seven total games is a ton of development time.

JTS isn’t going to “step up”. It’s not as if he’s been a loafer. His best isn’t good enough at the pro level. He is who he is unfortunately.

I don’t want to hear any of this, “heNeEds to bE cOAchEd beTteR” either.

  2. Destinjohnny Says:

JTS is our best pass rusher sadly enough
In 11 lichts drafts where/who are the lineman?

  3. Bojim Says:

    Agree!

  4. Bojim Says:

Also if Nelson gets more snaps bet he gets eight or nine sacks.

  5. Mike Says:

Not sure if JTS will figure it all out or not, but if he does, it will be fun to watch. I’m all for him getting another year to prove he can do the job and be productive. In fact, I do agree that if Nelson is being more productive with less snaps by the mid point of the season, the coaches would be justified in making a switch to the starting lineup.

  6. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

You could keep JTS as starter but make sure that Nelson is on the field for the more important moments.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Well so far today Joe you’ve managed to diss JTS, Nelson, Davis, Dean, White, Trask & Mayfield. And we’ve still got 9 hours to go before the carriage turns into a pumpkin & the horses turn into mice.

I know that 8-9 wasn’t much to build upon, but given our sorry-ass salary CAP situation we’re probably just treading water at the moment. One big unknown at this point is how well these guys are gonna respond to coaching (as individuals) and come together (as a team). Some will surely surprise us, others will be just who we thought they were. There’s always hope, even in the darkest recesses of JBF World Headquarters.

  8. Mikadeemas Says:

Yeah, that’s pitiful. Lookin like a swing, and a miss. GO BUCS!

  9. Dre Bucsfan! Says:

Although it maybe too early to write JTS off i doubt ANTHONY NELSON is the one kirwan is talking about putting jts on the bench. Instead i see Mr YAYA DIABY making a case for more snaps!

  10. Boss Says:

JTS will be just fine. He will step up now that there is actual competiotion.

I hope he bulked up this year.

  11. Dooley Says:

Plain and to the point, JTS needs to finish better on pass rush reps. Nelly, did next to nothing outside of special teams his first 2 seasons in the league and didn’t get much PT until JPP got banged up in 2021. Kirwan is saying this like Shaq Barretts’ status isn’t up in the air and we wont need both the OLBs he mentioned to start/play significant PT early.

How about we get a roster primer before camp, instead of talking about the same 7 players for weeks on end lol

  12. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I hope kancey gets deployed to the edge. He’s got the speed, tenacity, motor, and has the size at 281 for the edge. Tryin-stinka is simply to small. Good teams recognize these things early…on. Just sayin.

  13. Dooley Says:

    @Boss

JTSs’ neck is officially broader than his head, and he’s been working out with Coach Ed (McGilvra) this offseason. There are videos out there of JTS working on his bend and handwork in drills, which has been where imo JTS needs the most work as a technician as we all know athletically he’s got it all.

  14. Dooley Says:

“Tryin-stinka is simply to small. Good teams recognize these things early…on. Just sayin.”

Kancey is smaller than JTS lol

  15. adambomb418 Says:

Maybe the Bucs saw how he can throw a baseball and said yikes!

  17. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

    Bspn has kancey 281
    Joe tryin 257
What do you have them at Dooley?

  18. Destinjohnny Says:

JTS is Lichts best pass rusher he has drafted….

  19. Wild Bill Says:

Not a great anology but many a great looking thoroughbred never won a big race!. JTS looks like a great prospect but plays like a second or third stringer. Our GM wasted an early Pic because the guy looked good with his shirt off. And worse, he had a mediocre college career. How many top college players sat out a season because of covid? I call wuss alert that should have been a red flag.

  20. kyle Says:

    tampa has a pass rush?

  21. kyle Says:

a couple of lawn chairs on the outside could stop more quarterbacks.

  22. JaxBucsFan Says:

It won’t be Nelson that sends JTS to the bench. It’ll be YaYa.

  23. SlyPirate Says:

    Two Things:
    1. A Nelson has been great. I thought he should be a starter last year. Let’s give him a shot.
    2. No need to give up on JTS. He has all the tools. It just needs to click. Letting him come off the bench is a good idea.

  24. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Stievie Wonder can see Jill is one contact bust. Zero football instincts, looks like Tarzan and Jane is a better football player.

  25. Buc'n Enough Says:

    Another first round whiff…

  26. crazyhorse1954 Says:

In watching film, it is clear that JTS takes himself out of the pass rush by going wide rather than close on the QB, then preens his way back to the huddle. He just doesn’t seem to get it that he has to close on the QB not allow the offensive tackle move him out of the way. He seriously has to fix this and actually get sacks. I’m not sure he can do it. He hasn’t shown it as of yet.

  27. Joe Says:

He just doesn’t seem to get it that he has to close on the QB not allow the offensive tackle move him out of the way.

Don’t think he’s big/strong enough to bull rush a tackle so he has to use finesse and go outside to get to the QB.

  28. stpetebucfan Says:

    D.R. Well put!!!

  29. chark Says:

I called this from the very beginning..wasnt too impressed with JTS tape , lack of football intellect and a bit stiff lateraly and no feel for where the ball is going. I predicted he would not be a starter and a situational pass rusher at best. Ant Nelson is a no frills outside end that I dont mind as he is steady albeit unspectacular and recognizes play and has some size and athleticism, we should have drafted an explosive situation pass rusher to spell barrett and the other def end/Nelson?,,not named JTS. JTS is just not that good…bad draft pick..his tape showed a 3rd 4thr rnd player

  30. Anthony Gironda Says:

Robert Quinn and Jadeveon Clowney are still out there.

  31. Bucsfan13 Says:

I’m starting to think Dooley has some inside information lol. That’s awesome

  32. Da Bucs Guy Says:

    Another Licht Bust

  33. Oviedo Jim Says:

JTS stinks. He was a poor draft pick. He’s not even close to being an asset to this team. Let’s talk about real players.

  34. Destinjohnny Says:

He is our best pass rusher

  35. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Clowny doesn’t product at this point.

Quin has it in him when healthy…but he may never be healthy enough again.

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is a whopping 24 years old. The kid is still young, and only 2 years into his nfl career.

I’m not ready to call him a bust.

At the very least, he can be quality depth…but this kid s his third year, the year when he needs to show his worth.

  37. garro Says:

“The former Jets linebackers coach and personnel chief also is a former Bucs scout who lives in Southwest Florida. He’s no disconnected clown spewing hot takes.”

Truer words have never been spoken by either of the Joes or Ira!

If it were up to me I would make that switch in camp if JTS can’t win the job outright. Also add Diaby to that competition. We desperately need a relliable edge. Both in the run and the pass.

    Go Bucs!

Abolutely agree!…Shaq looked mediocre his first few years before he got here.

    Go Bucs!

  39. teacherman777 Says:

JTS should not play on 1st and 2nd down.

He should only play on 3rd down from now on.

Nelson is way better against the run.

  40. Joker's Paradigm Says:

“Don’t think he’s big/strong enough to bull rush a tackle so he has to use finesse and go outside to get to the QB.”

To me it seems like he misses a lot and QBs side step him easily. It’s like he’s there, but can’t close the deal. Finesse means nothing if he keeps missing the target. Can that be fixed?

  41. bucsfaninOregon Says:

The guy that describes JTS most accurately is Crazy Horse. He ALWAYS seems to take an outside rush and is easily pushed out of the play. If Joe is correct and JTS is not big/strong to bull rush a tackle>>>HE IS A BUST!

I also focus on the 49rs and they have edge rushers we would dream about. They DO NOT use the same rush technique on every play. Seems to me that is JTS’s problem. Simple, another wiff by our “great” GM who somehow cannot draft a premier pass rusher. Best move of Licht in this area was JPP. That was hardly a draft.

  42. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

We’ve all seen how the Bucs will rotate guys on the defensive line during games. Sometimes even via is lined up on the DE spot. My prediction is when the Bucs do this and kancey is on DE spot; we will see A mad dawg hunting down opposing QB’s. And getting to them as well. Just a hunch…

  43. Jeffrey Becker Says:

    excellent news

  44. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

I really don’t care about the whole “living up to a draft status” thing. Once the draft is over and camp begins and then the games, produce or get replaced. Coaches don’t and shouldn’t care what round a player was drafted either. They have to put the best players on the field. Period.

If a GM tries to force a coach to play a guy because of his “draft staus” in order to justify his selecting him, he’s hurting his team for his ego’s sake. If Nelson or one of the rookies can win the job over JTS in camp, so be it. If JTS becomes just a solid backup, so be it. Not a total loss or a “bust”.

Most players don’t live up to their “draft status”. Fans and media talking heads expect every 1st rounder to be an alll-pro. Ain’t gonna happen. We should just hope to see improvement from not just JTS but several players.

Many of the media types were hyping Cancey as “the next Aaron Donald”. If he turns out not to be but just a solid player, those same clowns will crap all over him for not living up to “their’ expectations.

If a player like.JTS has all the physical tools, it’s up to the coaches to get him to maximize them. A player can’t control where they’re drafted. They just have to give maximum effort when the pads go on and I’ve never heard any complaints about JTS slacking off.
