Pressure Chart Demonstrates How Badly Bucs Need An Edge Rusher To Step Up

July 3rd, 2023

No. 42 in 2022.

One of the very few guys to carve out a niche as sort of an offensive line analyst/savant, Brandon Thorn, has decided to dabble on the other side of the line.

Thorn runs the “Trench Warfare” site and decided to break down the best pass rushers in the game.

Sadly, only one Bucs rusher was represented, and he wasn’t in Thorn’s top-32.

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka made the top-50 pressure rate list coming in at No. 42. So about 10 teams’ second-best pass rusher was better than the Bucs’ best pressure man? #Sad

Of 409 pass rushes Thorn documented from JTS, only two fell in the category “rare high quality.” For reference, Micah Parsons, Danielle Hunter and Trey Hendrickson led the NFL in Thorn’s “rare high quality” breakdown with five each.

In Thorn’s estimation, 12 times last year quarterback pressure from JTS forced an offense off the field ending a drive.

Thorn used a point system to determine his top-50 pass rushers. It is as follows:

1.25 points: Rare High Quality (RHQ) Pressure – A 1-on-1 QB hit or hurry over a very good (Ex: Andrew Thomas) or elite (Ex: Trent Williams) blocker due to the rusher’s skill, move(s) and/or athletic ability.

1.0 point: High Quality (HQ) Pressure – A 1-on-1 (or 1-on-2) QB hit or hurry an above (or below) average blocker due to the rusher’s skill, move(s) and/or athletic ability.

.5 points: Low Quality (LQ) or Unblocked Pressure – A pressure coming as a result of the QB running into the rusher’s direction due to scheme (bootleg, roll-out), pressure from another rusher or being unblocked due to scheme (stunt, twist) or a missed assignment.

JTS scored highest in low-quality pressures.

All of this intel and research from Thorn reinforces Joe’s notion that an edge rush is the lone element this Bucs’ defense lacks in order to be a top-shelf unit.

The Bucs have a damn good secondary. They have elite inside linebackers (provided disgruntled Devin White wants to play). The interior defensive line is solid if not strong. The missing link is a pass rusher.

Make, or break year for Joe, and some other Buc players. Logan Hall needs to show he’s an NFL starter, McCullum needs to also. Goedeke better show he can replace Wirfs at RT by locking down that spot. Trask has to show even if he doesn’t start that he’s more than a capable back up. There’s a lot of players besides JTS that have a lot to prove this year. It’s going to be a fun competitive camp, and preseason for a welcome change.

  2. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Either play better or get better players. Simple as that.

THIS IS SO TRUE, AND SO IMPORTANT..LEE ROY SELMON, SIMION RICE, JPP…THESE ARE THE TOP 3 ( IN ORDER OF PERFORMANCE ) THE BUCCANEERS HAVE EVER HAD ( BESIDES WALLY CHAMBERS FOR ONE SEASON ) SINCE JPP LEFT, WE HAVE NO STEADY DE’S..I PRAY THAT JOE TRYON, RON HALL,CALIJAH KANCEY, ANTHONY NELSON, WHOMEVER, CAN EMERGE AS A FORCE FROM THE FORGOTTEN DEFENSIVE END POSITION ON THIS TEAM..SOMEONE TO SET THE EDGE & TERRORIZE OPPOSING QUARTERBACK’S ON A SREADY BASIS WITH SACKS, NOT JUST PRESSURES ( THERE’S TOO FEW OF THOSE COMING FROM THAT POSITION AS WELL ) IF WE HAD TWO DOMINANT DE’S ( ONE ON EACH SIDE ), WE’D HAVE THE #1 DEFENSE IN THE NFL ! ! ! I TRULY BELIEVE CALIJAH KANCEY CAN BE DOMINANT AT “ANY” LINE POSITION & RON HALL WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A BEAST FROM THE END POSITION WHEN WE DRAFTED HIM ! ? JOE TRYON ( A #1 DRAFT PICK, SURE DOESN’T PLAY LIKE ONE ! A BUST ? ) FIGURE IT OUT & GET IT TOGETHER DURING TRAINING CAMP MEN !..WE NEED LEADERS TO STEP IT UP AT ALL POSITIONS..DEFENSIVE END HAS BECOME A “PRIORITY” !

  4. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

    STEADY BASIS !

  5. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

LIKE I TRIED TO SAY BEFORE ” WE NEED 2 DOMINANT DEFENSIVE END’S..( EXP : LEE ROY SELMON, SIMION RICE, JPP ) GUYS WHO CAN PRODUCE SACKS & PRESSURES ON A REGULAR BASIS ! RON HALL, JOE TRYON, WHERE ARE THEY ? DID THEY DISAPPEAR? ?..BOTH HIGHLY TOUTED ( & DRAFTED PICKS ) THEY COULDN’T DOMINATE THEIR OWN GRANDFATHER’S THE WAY THEY ARE PLAYING ! WAKE UP YOU TWO ! !..THIS IS THE NFL..WHICH ALSO “NOT FOR LONG” IF YOU TWO DON’T START LIVING UP TO YOUR HIGH DRAFT PICKS/SALARIES ! ! !

Trade Devin White for a 2nd and 3rd.

    Sign Kwon Alexander.

On 3rd down, take Kwon off the field.

Only play LVD at LB on passing downs.

Eve if Devin White plays. I don’t want him in the field anymore on passing downs.

Put an extra safety in the game.

And I guarantee we will improve our 3rd down defense

Hmm. RHQ, HQ & LQ. Thorn may have also come up with a new rating scale for hot women.

  8. dmatt Says:

JTS, Logan Hall, n Zyon McCullom all have something in common, they are passive tacklers. Why are we going back to drafting soft, passive, no violence, Gerald McCoy type defensive players. JTS has shown me the same thing for two years, he plays lost, n when he does discover where the play is he comes in late like a new kid playing sand lot football, sliding on the ground. If I was Bowles I’d put Calajah Kancey at de n turn him into a Dwight Freeney, they have the same height n Freeney was a stud at de. JTS has proven to me that he’s not mentally nor physically ready for the big dogs, then again, last chance to prove me wrong.

  9. Fred McNeil Says:

I think JTS will improve quite a bit this year. He mostly needs to have a better strategy and awareness…a better plan.
    Hall??? IDK.

  10. DJB Says:

JTS relies on finesse, which can work if you have some tenacity to go along with it. As dmatt commented, he is soft and passive. Likes to dance out in the flat with the blocker. I will never forget him swatting the ball away as if it were a grenade in the Bengals game.

  12. Dooley Says:

JTS is playing to get his 5th year option picked up next season and for that to happen he’s going to need improve pairing speed & power on pass rush reps. We know Joe can penetrate, but whether it be the timing is off in relation to the pass being out in his first 2 seasons we’ve seen alot of near misses and I can understand how that can frustrate those of you with “sack lust”. The spin move and the inside counter he uses works, but I’m hoping Joe is still working on using his hands more efficiently which should make it easier for him to start diversifying and stacking his counter moves.

Joe has improved his run defense from year 1 to year 2 and gets asked to line-up at OLB, but given what he sees pre-snap is also tasked from moving his alignment from the outside shoulder of OT to the outside shoulder of the OG as a 4i-tech. This results in JTS being able to use his athleticism to scrape down the OL has resulted in some TFLs displaying his ability to track ball carriers in the run game. Small stride, but pair that with his improvement setting the edge which he also struggled with year 1.

I’ve alluded to this before, but of all OLBs in the NFL JTS had the 3rd highest coverage grade as he’s asked to get out into the flat in space especially when the field is wide to his left and disrupt throwing lanes which is another credit to his fluidity he moves with being as rangy as he is. I get it, the people want high sack totals, but there’s so much more to look at reviewing his tape.

  13. bucsfaninOregon Says:

DOOLEY: ” We know Joe can penetrate”.
I’m glad you are sure because I’m sure not. His specialty is getting pushed into the flats by the OL. Penetrate into the box is exactly what he doesn’t do. I would surely look at Kancey at DE.

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

7-10 my final prediction. Bucs bringing up the rear.

  15. Buc4evr Says:

JTS was not a good draft pick. Every year is a prove it year and I don’t see anything changing. Number 42 at QB pressures tells us all we will ever need to know.

  16. Dooley Says:

“Number 42 at QB pressures tells us all we will ever need to know.”

No it doesn’t just means you can take a look at a spreadsheet and say “he doesn’t have good enough numbers in this column so he stinks” which is nowhere close to knowing all of anything.

“I’m glad you are sure because I’m sure not.”

Well idk what your eyes and brain are saying to one another when you’re watching football, but JTS has had a good amount of close calls and near misses in his 2 full seasons as a pro w/plenty of film to back that up. Last season he added an inside counter to his pass rush repertoire and even made a sack or two using a spin move when OTs attempt to leverage his inside shoulder after the initial contact. JTS also gets chipped by TEs frequently, which also throws his timing off.

  17. Anthony Gironda Says:

Robert Quinn and Jadeveon Clowney are still looking for a new team and the Bucs could still use another edge rusher.

  18. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Devin White is a pretty terrible ILB, not sure how you can classify him as “elite” when the stats say otherwise (i.e., total liability in coverage, high missed tackle percentage). He’s an incredible athlete who lacks awareness and discipline. The one thing Devin has done well is get to the QB. Maybe we should be using him more like Micah Parsons. Yes Devin is 3″ shorter, but you could argue he is more athletic, and has proven he can get to the QB. If we aren’t going to trade him, let’s at least use him for what he is good at and send him into the pocket!

  19. Dooley Says:

“Yes Devin is 3″ shorter, but you could argue he is more athletic, and has proven he can get to the QB.”

Do you remember the rep where a rookie OG put Devin White on skates in the Ravens game? That’s why, putting him at OLB makes it a 11 vs. 10 on defense because he’ll get neutralized off the snap and he certainly isn’t setting the edge in the run game.

  20. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

JTS and Logan Hall have speed and length but no power. Jason Licht finally understood this and drafted guys in this year’s draft with these qualities in mind.

  21. Pickgrin Says:

“The missing link is a pass rusher.”

Which is why the Bucs drafted 3 good pass rushing prospects this year (Kancey, YaYa and Ramirez). There was obviously no $ to go sign a $20M established FA – so Licht did the best he could with the resources available to bolster our pass rush.

Vea, Kancey, Hall and Greg Gaines on the inside with Barrett, JTS, YaYa and Ramirez coming off the Edges represents a good amount of talent and athleticism up front including four 1st round picks(JTS was pick #32 and Hall was #33 so close enough).

Its no easy task replacing Suh and JPP – but they aged out and Licht had no choice but to get younger and faster which is exactly what the Bucs have done.

I expect this year to see our best pass rush from the front 4 since 2020.

  25. Wild Bill Says:

Hope springs eternal from the JTS fans. He gets close but no cigar. Much like a great looking thoroughbred who rarely wins a race. Looks like a stud but plays like a dud. A wasted high draft pick by Licht! A late round experiment fine, but a wasted high draft pick. Prettyboy dancer with no mean streak.
