Kyle Trask And The New Bucs Offense

July 28th, 2023

Uptempo.

There are a couple of things Joe has noticed about this new offense from first-year Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales.

There’s lots of motion with a variety of looks  andquarterbacks often are on the move, if but only a couple of steps. And these guys don’t fart around after the whistle is blown; offensive players get the play called, get their tails to the line and snap the ball.

(Joe has found this out the hard way taking notes. Joe has to hustle to not miss the next snap.)

Yesterday, Bucs quarterback competing Kyle Trask discussed how the Bucs don’t waste time after the whistle.

“Back in Seattle [the Seahawks, where Canales came from] they major in tempo offense, so I think that’s great for us,” Trask said. “We’ve got a lot of good energy in the building, like I’ve said in the past. It’s good to see us getting on the ball quick and getting the ball snapped.

“If we can do that, there’s no chance for the defense to switch up calls if we just snap one ball after another.”

Joe thought after underwear football season that this alleged quarterback competition was wrapped up. Trask wasn’t impressing and Joe maintains that whatever fans think of Baker Mayfield, he was going to get the nod because Todd Bowles needs wins and Bowles isn’t going to risk his career with a guy that has only thrown nine passes.

A funny thing happened this week. Trask looks like a different quarterback. He’s more nimble and instead of throwing lollipop passes like he used to, now he’s using his fastball and throwing more line drives.

Joe isn’t saying Trask is better than Mayfield. But at least through the first two practices of training camp, the gap has narrowed.

(Joe also remembers last year Trask was nipping at Blaine Gabbert’s ankles in the first week of training camp. After that first week, Gabbert separated himself and Trask actually regressed.)

Still, this is an uphill climb for Trask. He doesn’t just have to beat out Mayfield, he’s going to have to pull a Russell Wilson and look so good that Bowles can’t take him off the field.

At least it’s good to see that Trask has improved, finally. Joe has no idea if he started eating more Wheaties over the summer or what. Whatever he has done to transform himself since minicamp concluded, he’s on the right track.

That’s all you can ask. Trask has done nothing but what has been asked of him, and more since he’s been here. Buc fans have been harsh, wasted second round pick, slow learner, meaning dumb. Not moblie, noodle arm. Am I leaving anything out? I know through a family friend who went to UF with Trask what a good young man he is. Very down to earth, and a QB Tampa could be proud of, not embarrassed by. Wish more fans were behind him, hope he succeeds.

  2. Eric Says:

Confidence is amazing and knowing you are actually getting a legitimate chance to compete or at least believing it! Think about it if Joe was a young pup always writing articles but they never made the website how motivated would Joe be to keep putting out quality work!

  3. WillieG Says:

An up-tempo offense? You mean, like what Bowles wouldn’t use last season because his defense got tired?

  4. G-Buc Says:

The man will work to achieve his success! His history shows that!

That’s how it’s done! No short cuts! Nothing given! At any level

    Put in the work Kyle!

I hope we see the fans see the fruit of his work in preseason.

  5. BucU Says:

I have nothing against Trask at all. But after having the luxury of working with and watching TB12 every day for 2 yrs you’d think he’d be a force by now.
I’m rooting for him. Super nice guy.
But this is a performance league.
You either get it done or your out.

  6. Duane Says:

The notion that the starters job was Mayfields to lose is a fallacy. It has always been an open competition, and Mayfield has at least as much to prove as does Trask, after his previous two seasons at multiple teams, and no other team picking him up when he became a free agent, including his last team, the Rams.

It’s also not surprising that the new OC is giving Trask at least as much coaching attention as he does Mayfield – a condition that never prevailed under Leftwich and BA who logically spent most of their efforts incorporating the GOAT’s preferences and skills into their offense, which was taylor made for Brady.

It’s a whole new ballgame now, pardon the pun. There really is a QB competition, and either player could win the starters job in week 1, and then lose it by week 5.

tailor, not taylor! Need an edit function!

    “competing Kyle Trask”

Joe can’t stop taking shots at Trask. With my “A” in Psychology 101 from a top university :), I’d say Joe is nervous about Trask’s performance so far this year.

  9. Tony Says:

BucU Says: “I have nothing against Trask at all. But after having the luxury of working with and watching TB12 every day for 2 yrs you’d think he’d be a force by now EXCEPT THAT TASK NEVER TOOK A SINGLE SNAP WITH THE STARTERS DURING THOSE 2 YEARS AS STATED BY JACON LICHT HIMSELF RECENTLY.”

    There, fixed it for you.

  10. Wild Bill Says:

Baker, tailor, candlestick maker: what difference it makes when a young draftee moves up from number 4 qb to number 2 ! He has been an after thought until now. How good is he at the pro level? Who the hell knows when you are #4. Hope the kid balls out and puts Baker on the bench where all the other teams put him probably because he just wasn’t good enough.

“An up-tempo offense? You mean, like what Bowles wouldn’t use last season because his defense got tired?”

    fan-fiction is cute lol

  12. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Good luck with that Duane, they don’t even edit their own posts here.

  13. DBS Says:

That’s a real shame for those who think they are so perfect in this world. FO

  14. JBuc Says:

I followed Trask at UF and the guy can be a star. In 2020 he threw for 4,283 yards and 43 TD’s as he led the Florida Gators to be one of the most explosive offenses in the country

  15. Nicholas Carlson Says:

I still think the absolute best outcome is for Trask to look so good they have to start him. Very promising for the Bucs future.

Hate to say it, but given the Bucs’ sad history with young quarterbacks and the Bucs’ FSU homies fan base, the best thing for Trask might be to look good, be dissed by the Bucs for a small journeyman loser, and go to another team.

“I have nothing against Trask at all. But after having the luxury of working with and watching TB12 every day for 2 yrs you’d think he’d be a force by now.”

Yeah just like Jimmy G, Brian Hoyer, Jacoby Brissett, Matt Cassel, and BLaine Gabbert

  18. JimBobBuc Says:

I agree that Bowles doesn’t like up-tempo when you have 3 and outs. I hope he gives Canales the freedom to use it.

It will be interesting to know about how blocking calls will be made between Jenson and the QB’s, and the audible ability between the two QB’s. With Baker’s experience, he should have the edge. Maybe Joe can get some intel on LOS calls on runs and passes.

  19. Infomeplease Says:

Dooley says. “An up-tempo offense? You mean, like what Bowles wouldn’t use last season because his defense got tired?”

If we see the same head coach as last year, he will put an end to the up tempo as soon as September rolls around! Hopefully Bowles is able to learn from his mistakes! If so, things could be fun here.

  20. ATLBuc Says:

Joe!! I appreciate your honesty. I imagine it’s difficult for you to say positive things about Trask because you have predicted that mayfield will win the QB competition. You have even insinuated that it is not a real quarterback competition. But, alas, the journalist wins out over the analyst!! Keep up the good work and keep those practice reports coming!!

  21. Ghost of Tom Brady Says:

I admit that I’m a Mayfield guy. Liked him in college and when he was drafted I’d check on how he was playing, but if Trask ends up better, I’m ok with that too. The thing about Trask is, if he does turn out to be pretty good, we might have a solid backup for the next 10-15 years. That’s nothing to sneeze at. Win-win.

Why not a starter? He didn’t go to FSU? Asking for a friend.

  23. b4l Says:

Should give Trask the advantage since he is more of a thinker than Baker is. Can’t wait to see Trask shock everybody this season.

  24. Fred McNeil Says:

    Let the games begin!

  25. Shak Says:

I want Trask to be the guy so badly, but I already know it’s going to be Baker. I just hope they are going to give Trask a lot of real reps, especially in preseason games so he has a chance to improve for the future, even if they aren’t giving him a real shot at starting this season. I hate it, but I just truly believe they are telling him it’s a real competition just so he plays hard and confidently. I think it’s Bowels who doesn’t believe in him, that and/or he doesn’t want to risk his job on someone so green.

Come on Trask, just ball out and make everyone question the legitimacy of competition if you play better but don’t get the job.

On the other hand, I want Baker to be great too because no matter who the QB1 is, I’m a bucs fan first, I want the best players to play the most, I want the best chance at winning! I’m cheering for all of them to be their best!!

  26. Wild Bill Says:

Good post Shak. Having two good qbs is great to have. Injuries happen to qbs quite often.

  27. Sly Pirate Says:

    “Lollipop passes” and “Line drives”

    Huh?

  28. David Says:

    Joe,
You are forced to post a positive report on Trask. Don’t be silly. When Trask plays well, Joe writes about it. –Joe.
As I said before you might be invited to crow party after Trask is announced as qb1.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“The notion that the starters job was Mayfields to lose is a fallacy. It has always been an open competition…”

    Sigh.

Sometimes it is hard to hold in my reactions.

    J0E said it himself:
“Still, this is an uphill climb for Trask. He doesn’t just have to beat out Mayfield, he’s going to have to pull a Russell Wilson and look so good that Bowles can’t take him off the field.”

I do not see how some people can’t see it for what it is. Joe seems to see it. Trask will not get the starting job even if he deserves it.

Bowles will have to be forced into using him…that won’t happen unless because Mayfield is injured, or unless the Glazers force the move…and the Glazer won’t force it before the bye-week.

They will give Bowles his way at least until that point. We have a 6 week bye.

If Mayfield gets the start because of Bowles, he’ll have 5 games to prove himself. Don’t expect much.

amd if Mayfield blows it…expect a change in head coach at the end of the season. And if Dave C. Does a good enough job to get offers from other teams…he’ll be our next head coach.

  30. garro Says:

Alot of folks have never watched the tape on Trask at Florida.

They moved him around quite a bit there. Canales will have him moving a bit more for sure, but Trask can throw the ball on the run. Just ask Pitts.

    Go Bucs!
