Bucs Training Camp Day 2 Practice Notes

July 27th, 2023

Bucs OL coach Joe Gilbert works with his troops Thursday at Bucs training camp.

Players remained in the throes of underwear football at One Buc Palace as the second day of training camp is now in the books.

Some highlights: Kyle Trask slightly came back to earth, though overall he had an OK day. Rookie linebacker SirVocea Dennis continues to demonstrate he’s a ballhawk (to Trask’s chagrin) and wide receiver hopeful Rakim Jarrett made a big-time tough catch.

(Always remember that in underwear football there is no hitting, no real blocking, no tackling, and you can’t come within the scent of a quarterback. What often are complete passes in underwear football would be sacks in games.)

* Kyle Trask fakes a handoff to Sneak Vaughn to the left and Trask rolls right to the sideline.

* Baker Mayfield fakes a handoff and throws to the right side for tight end David Wells (San Diego State). He has an active but tough day. More on that in a bit.

* Mayfield hits Cade Otton on the right sideline.

* At times, Mayfield has a very quick throw. This time he demonstrated that by connecting with Deven Thompkins down the right seam. Joe knows Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales likes Thompkins and the second-year receiver from Fort Myers is not disappointing.

* Linebacker Ulysees Gilbert breaks up a Mayfield pass.

* Mayfield connects with Kade Warner on a short pass to the left.

* Stop the Scotty Miller nonsense! When Miller was with the Bucs, it would drive Bucco Bruce Arians batty how he would jump for nearly every friggin’ pass, even when he didn’t have to. Receiver David Moore did that today. He got open over the middle, widearse open, and Trask hit him with a perfect pass. Moore still thought he needed to jump for the ball. The Scotty Miller Leap.

* Joe will repeat: Just like yesterday, dudes are getting open. Not sure if Canales is scheming guys open that well or if Bucs receivers are going against camp meat. On this particular play where Moore did the Scotty Miller Leap, Joe did notice Carlton Davis and Antoine Winfield were on the field but not the entire first-team defense.

* Canales is sort of like Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck when he was a receivers coach for former Bucs commander Greg Schiano. Fleck liked to (try to) guard Vincent Jackson in receiver drills. Canales likes to pretend he’s Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and run after quarterbacks pretending to rush the passer during quarterback drills sessions.,  (No, Joe isn’t implying that Tryon-Shoyinka only pretends to be a pass rusher …)

* Also during quarterback drills, Canales is very hands-on.

* Trask throws to Rachaad White in the left flat and there is no room to run.

* Chris Godwin goes low to catch a pass from Trask along the right sideline.

* Vaughn hauls in a pass over the middle.

* This is no offense for statue quarterbacks. Even on dropbacks, Canales has both Mayfield and Trask taking a couple of steps one way or the other. Very limited pocket passing.

* Trask tries to get a pass to Otton on the right sideline but Dennis breaks it up. This guy Dennis has a nose for the football.

* Trask is more assertive than he has been in previous seasons when he was a wallflower. After the pass to Otton was broken up, Trask came to the sideline and immediately walked upfield maybe 10 yards to meet Mike Evans and Godwin coming off the field to talk about routes. Trask was just slightly animated using his hand to mimic a route as he spoke with Evans. Godwin then joined in the conversation as well while the three walked back together to where the offensive players and coaches were standing, talking routes all the while.

* A Chase Edmonds sighting. Mayfield throws him a pass along the right sideline.

* Baller catch! Jarrett is along the left sideline deep and is fighting good coverage from Keenan Isaac (Alabama State). Mayfield aims for Jarrett who skied just high enough over Isaac to snag the ball and hit the turf hard. But Jarrett held onto the ball for the catch.

* Trask connects with White who is widearse open over the middle. Yes, there were some first-team defenders on the field.

* Mike Evans hauls in a Trask pass along the left sideline.

* Trask fakes a handoff to the right, rolls left and connects with Thompkins in the left flat.

* In consecutive plays Mayfield hits Jarrett over the middle and links up with Edmonds on the left side.

Red Zone drills

* Ko Kieft catches a Trask pass along the right sideline and goes out of bounds near the goal line.

* White tries to run up the middle and is met by a mound of humanity. So he quickly bounces outside to the right and scores.

* Ryan Miller is crossing inside from the right along the backline and Trask hits him as Miller approaches the goal post, but Miller had to go low to scoop up the throw.

* FUMBLE! Vaughn coughs the ball up in the backfield and Anthony Nelson picks the ball up. Had the play not been blown dead, it’s possible Nelson would have had a massive return, maybe a scoop-and-score.

* PICK! Trask is human. He throws to the left side which Dennis intercepts and turns the play into a pick-six.

* Turnovers on back-to-back plays are never good.

* Mayfield throws to Jarrett along the right sideline and again Jarrett skies to haul in a catch. Good coverage too.

* Warner on a Benn’ed Around to the left.

* Mayfield throws to Godwin along the right sideline who stretches out and brings the ball in.

* ATTENTION SEAN TUCKER PEOPLE: Joe saw the Syracuse running back touch the ball. He ran inside left tackle for a few yards.

* Trask throws a pass to White in the end zone for a score.

* Payne Durham has a case of the dropsies. He dropped a sure touchdown yesterday. On this particular play, though not nearly as bad as yesterday’s drop, Mayfield found Durham in the left corner of the end zone at the goal line open and Durham couldn’t hang on.

* Mayfield had Warner open to the left side but the ball appeared to bounce off Warner’s chest.

* PICK! Mayfield throws into a crowd and Nolan Turner picks it off.

Seven-on-Seven

* Mayfield to tight end Tanner Taula (Illinois State) to the right. Taula wears Cam Brate’s No. 84 so yeah, Joe thinks it is safe to say Brate won’t return like Will Gholston did.

* Mayfield hits Evans for a touchdown on the left side that reminded Joe of the touchdown catch Evans had in the 2020 NFC Championship game where he was backpedaling as he made the catch.

* Otton has back-to-back catches on the right side.

* Evans catches a pass from Trask on the left side as Evans is going out of bounds. Joe isn’t sure if Evans got both feet down but knowing how impressive Evans’ footwork is, Joe will give the Bucs legend the benefit of the doubt.

* Moore catches a short pass from Trask on the left side.

* Otton with a catch at the goal line near the right side.

* Vaughn with a run up the middle.

* Joe couldn’t tell with binoculars who the defender was on the far side of the field, but Mayfield had a pick dropped.

* There’s no hitting in underwear football! No matter how hard teams try, there will always be a play or two where there is incidental contact. This is one of those times. Wells catches a pass over the middle and is immediately met in the gut by K.J. Britt. The hit didn’t look that hard at all but Wells stayed on the ground for a moment before being escorted by trainers to the sideline.

* Mayfield tried to connect with Patrick Laird down the right seam but the connection was not made.

* Mayfield tried a fade in the far left corner for Warner but the rookie couldn’t quite come down with the catch. Strong coverage on the play from Derrick Pitts (North Carolina State).

* Trask looks and looks and looks and the alarm goes off in his head and he sails a pass over the crossbar to throw the ball away and live to play another down.

* Mayfield has another pass attempt knocked down by Turner.

Great work. This has to take the both of you to be this good.

  6. Craig Says:

    Thanks Joe.

Sounds like the QB battle is too close to call so far. Trask needs to step it up, but throwing the ball away is a good sign that he is getting it.

Baker sounds like the Baker of old, trying to force the ball when throwing it away to live another day is smarter.

  7. Tbbucs3 Says:

Vaughn fumbling with no pads is not a good sign. Edmonds will probably be the #2 back.

  8. SteveK Says:

Love the Canaeles to Fleck comparisons. That was in my mind too. Should be a fun year.

  9. shankasorous Says:

Thanks for the detailed notes! Love ’em. Lots of completions by the QBs. Here are the quarterback miscues for those who didn’t read it all . . .

    INTs: Mayfield 1, Task 1

Dropped INTs: Mayfield 1, Trask 0

Passes Broken UP: Mayfield 2, Trask 1

Where has that Palmer guy been

  13. Tbbucs3 Says:

Canales seems like a very talented QB coach but any first year play caller is going to be a mystery until the games start.

The energy levels he brings to the offense are great but as the legend John McKay once said,
“Emotion is highly overrated in football. My wife Corky is emotional as hell but can’t play football worth a damn.”

  14. shankasorous Says:

Tbbucs3 Says: “Emotion is highly overrated in football.”

    So is moxie.

  15. kyle Says:

haha canales playing tryon!! good one joe!! 😉

  16. Stanglassman Says:

Some of the other media won’t cover anything that happens after the first twenty mins of practice. You’ll talked about Godwins jet-sweep yesterday and the other media said they couldn’t discuss it much less tell us who was carrying the ball. Are you’ll just interpreting the rules differently?

Thank you for the great coverage!

  17. SOEbuc Says:

Trask is human. He didn’t have a pick six in underwear. That’s impressive for him. Starting defensive players figure White got stopped at/behind the line. Sounds like Otton is going to be a large contender with Baker. Excited to see Ke’ get reps this year. He can blow up holes up the middle, Rachaad can not. Fingers crossed on Maunch. Who is with starters at RG??? Stinnie?? Nelson returning is awesome. Depending on what the oline looks like we can be very deep in the trenches with talent. I really do hope Calijah is Sapp 2.0.

  18. SOEbuc Says:

^^Kancy 94 is my new creamsicle if he blows up^^

  19. Lord Cornelius Says:

Man this Dennis guy sounds like a pick-6 machine lol. I’m now expecting at least one this season young man

  20. Joe Says:

Joe wasn’t specific about the play meaning where Godwin lined up or what the play was. Joe didn’t call it a “jet sweep” in part because Joe isn’t sure that is what it was (jet sweeps are often confused). Joe just typed he ran with the ball, which is vague. Godwin has done that before too (NFC Championship game).

No, we’re not allowed to get specific as far as formations, etc.

Think you are confusing “first twenty minutes” with other things, specifically the open window. The first 20 minutes is the only time we are allowed to Twitter/post on social media (live), shoot photos or video. Sometimes, it’s more than that. Not coincidently, this is the most boring, mundane part of practice with warmups and position drills.

Remember, football coaches are the most paranoid species on earth. The Soviets had spies in Eisenhower’s headquarters yet somehow Ike still found a way to free the western world. But football coaches? OMG, the world will collapse beneath our feet if we point out the Bucs might have run a play with triples lined to the right!

  21. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Joe

Is Cody Mauch the first team right guard during these sessions?

  22. Hodad Says:

Dennis with another pick six. Took him day two this time. Has White had any interceptions lately? Think the last one was 2020.

  23. Joe Says:

Is Cody Mauch the first team right guard during these sessions?

Will check tomorrow. Thought he was. Joe is so worried about the ball he misses a lot of things away from the ball.

  24. Joe Says:

Trask is human. He didn’t have a pick six in underwear.

It’s still underwear football. Pads don’t come on until next week.

  25. Boss Says:

good stuff, but can we lose the sneak talk….confusing

  26. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

    Trask: “Taller, Smoother, Faster”

    Shots fired.

  27. shankasorous Says:

    @Tony

Thanks for the breakdown. So Mayfield had more throwing miscues than Trask. Not surprise

    [Thanking yourself? Weird. — Joe]

  28. nooyoker Says:

Hey Tony, thanks for the breakdown. So Mayfield had more throwing miscues than Trask. Not surprised.

  29. A Bucs Fan Says:

Anyone interested in the oline today Cody Mauch and Goedeke were first team on the right side. Feiler and Wirfs were the left. Jensen was out on rest so Hainsey got the first team reps today.

  30. nooyoker Says:

Cody Mauch is listed at 6’6″ must be the tallest Buc?

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Curious….Joe……..do you dictate (record) the events and transcribe them later….take notes….or most simply from memory…..
Because it is considerably detailed…..and very informative.

  32. HC Grover Says:

    3 a day

  33. Dooley Says:

“Will check tomorrow. Thought he was. Joe is so worried about the ball he misses a lot of things away from the ball.”

Mauch & Goedeke were on the right side of the OL with the first team, there are a few videos on the net of the two in pass pro

  34. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Joe/A Bucs fan

    10-4. Thanks guys.

  35. Buddha Says:

Love the McKay comment. Should be applied to the head coach as well. Chuck Noll hardly ever blinked on the sidelines and won four super bowls!

  36. Pickgrin Says:

    Great stuff! Thanks Joe

“Very limited pocket passing.” – Seems apparent we are going to be looking at a lot of movement and rollouts from the QB this year.

“FUMBLE! Vaughn coughs the ball up” – That will get you demoted quick with these coaches Sneak. Hold onto the ball dude!

“PICK! Mayfield throws into a crowd “/ ” Mayfield has another pass attempt knocked down” – this right here is what gives Trask the chance to earn the starting job if he can limit his own turnovers.

  37. Defense Rules Says:

Nooyoker … That was just on the plays that Joe reported on. I’m sure that both QBs threw a lot more balls yesterday and today than that. Besides, everyone’s just getting their sea legs under them; now’s a good time to make mistakes rather than in games.

Can’t wait for pads to come on so we can see a little better what we have at the various positions. It’ll also be interesting to see how we fare against the Jets defense.

  38. Dewey Selmon Says:

Good stuff as usual Joe(s). Any sight of Trey Palmer?

  39. Oneilbuc Says:

I’m just going to wait until the game starts before I make any kind of judgement on either quarterback. I don’t care if they throw picks in practice because they need to know what they can or can’t get away with. Every quarterback throws picks in practice including the hall of famers.

  40. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Is it me or does Baker look like the chunky kid that gets picked last in dodgeball?

Is he wearing any protective gear around the middle or is it that he showed up with love handles and a little gut?

    Wifey doing some cooking?

  41. Obvious Says:

    Hey Mostly Peaceful Trask fan,

Did you get a look at the photos from the baseball game? Mayfield sitting right beside Ko Kief? Mayfield was so large that he Literally made Ko look like a Crack head!

Mayfield has DEFINITELY lucked out with his woman for him to be packin that type of weight! Man she CAN COOK! And he displays his deep appreciation for her culinary skills all over himself!

Maybe he just realizes that he’s going to get hit A LOT with the new look O line and is prepared In Advance….. He is DEFINITELY filled out. That won’t serve him well when it comes time to Run For It.. But at least he’ll Bounce when he hits the ground.

    GO BUCS!

  42. Fred McNeil Says:

Well, enjoyed the recap, Joe. Honestly if I was there I’d pass out.
From what I’ve gathered: (OtAs included) Otton is stepping up nicely. Dennis is a ravenous ball-hawk. You haven’t mentioned Evans much before today, but this morning blew up. Nice…
Durham has a ways to go. I know you can’t see if he’s blocking well. Too much to watch. Can we get some Intel?

  43. Joe Says:

Curious….Joe……..do you dictate (record) the events and transcribe them later….take notes….or most simply from memory…..

Oh no! Notes. Sometimes lots of notes. From the time a whistle blows ending a play until the snap of next play, maybe a second after the snap, am taking notes.

  44. Fred McNeil Says:

Thanx for enduring the sweltering hades that is Tampa summer to bring us what we’re dting to hear. If you hired me to cover that…I’d pass out. Can’t take the swelter anymore. That said this is my takeaway from the past two days and off-season per my understanding of what you’ve said: First, that Dennis kid is a menace. We may not require DW45’s services as much as he fantasies we do. I only hope it lights a fire under his butt to play like the maniac he clearly can be if it suits him at the moment.
I’ve seldom heard Evans name from your lips till today (in practices). It’s glorious to hear of his heroics today! Booyah!!!
That said, all you’ve mentioned of DW45 is crickets. I imagine thats because of the viewing angle…makes me think that’s obln purpose by BUCS staff. You’ve not been able to see the defences numbers. Nobody has. Strange yje only defensive players ine heard about that I recall are Nolan Turner, Dennis, and Kancey…plus a few who I couldn’t pick out of a lineup.
Otton looks like a very solid pick. Dur-ham needs to be smoked and cured for a while.
Thompson looks good. That Jarrett(?) Kis seems good. Nolan Turner seems very good.
I guess that’s enough for now.
Overall take: we have a long row to hoe, but we have excellent farmhands.

  45. Fred McNeil Says:

    Go BUCS!!!

  46. nooyoker Says:

Defense Rules Says: “Nooyoker … That was just on the plays that Joe reported on.”

True, but it’s all we got. I suspect Joe reports the important plays. Joe’s notes are certainly meticulous enough to paint a picture.

  47. Fred McNeil Says:

Hey Joe, amin asked how you compile your notes. May I guess?
First ya gotta get up early, fight Tampa traffic…maybe even Malfunction Junction, but I hope you have a saner route. You could use an audio recorder, maybe you do, but it’s a noisy environment….actually, I can’t guess.

  48. Clay Says:

Was “Benn-ed” an Arrelious Benn mention?

  49. ScottyMack Says:

“Is Cody Mauch the first team right guard during these sessions?”

    LT – Wirfs
    LG – Feiler
    C- Jensen
    RG – Mauch
    RT – Goedeke

Jensen has a pre-schedules “rest day” today, so Hainsey took his place.

  50. J Ghotier Says:

The best notes in Bucs town there is!

Speaking if Benn’d Around, Rakim Jarrett kinda reminds me a smidgen of Arellious Benn as far as body build and how they run after the catch w/ the ball in their hands and angry. They both seem to pick up a bit of extra speed and angriness when they run w/ possession of the football 🤷‍♂️

  51. Slacker Says:

This team has the worst running back room in the league. Boasts well for a team that wants to be run first.

  52. DBS Says:

Son of Trask how many names are you using now? Do do make it obvious you know.

  53. DBS Says:

    You do….

  54. Joe Says:

Hey Joe, amin asked how you compile your notes. May I guess?
First ya gotta get up early, fight Tampa traffic…maybe even Malfunction Junction, but I hope you have a saner route. You could use an audio recorder, maybe you do, but it’s a noisy environment….actually, I can’t guess.

Transcribing all of those notes is giving Joe the shivers just thinking about it. Much quicker to jot down notes and then use those notes for the stories. (Joe types very fast.)

  55. Joe Says:

True, but it’s all we got. I suspect Joe reports the important plays.

Joe omitted maybe four or five plays near the end that were repetitive, non-descript plays. Like “Mayfield to White for three.”

  56. Joe Says:

    Any sight of Trey Palmer?

“Saw” him but didn’t see him do anything.

  57. Joe Says:

Thanx for enduring the sweltering hades that is Tampa summer to bring us what we’re dting to hear.

Thank you! Hot weather doesn’t bother Joe at all. Joe was in Vegas last week (100+ each day) and didn’t think anything of it — unless there was a gust of wind — yuck! Felt like a hair dryer in your face.

Sure, would rather be in air conditioning but getting paid to watch football practice is a whole lot better than doing just about anything else indoors.

The Bucs graciously do provide us with shade. Not all NFL teams do.

    Mayfield almost-pick/Lavonte David.

Jenna had Mayfield as the quarterback (as Joe did) and it was Lavonte who nearly had the pick (Joe couldn’t see the number and didn’t grab his binoculars quick enough) plus Lavonte didn’t turn toward Joe quick enough so Joe could see his number. 🙂

  58. Crickett Baker Says:

Thanks so much. I did get a bit dizzy trying to figure out which White you were talking about but it is probably mostly my fault as I just don’t know much about positions and am just about too old to learn, 🙁

  59. garro Says:

    Great stuff Joe!
Are you ready for some football?!?

    Go Bucs!
