Todd Bowles, Bucs Plan On Meeting With Players On NFL Gambling Rules
June 6th, 2023So in recent weeks, it seems more and more players are getting popped for violating NFL rules on gambling.
In an article typed by Kaylyn Kahler of The Athletic, he cited a general confusion among players about how they can or cannot wager, which in part may lead to more players getting nailed and suspended.
One unidentified playe said he is waiting to be suspended as he now knows he violated a gambling rule that previously he was unaware was a violation.
So what are the Bucs doing to make sure their players don’t run afoul of NFL strongman Roger Goodell’s prohibition on players gambling? Joe asked Bucs coach Todd Bowles today after underwear football practice.
Basically, Bowles said, a team sitdown is just days away to cover this subject.
“We have gambling policies that we go over every year,” Bowles said. “Probably once in the spring when everybody gets here.
“Next week at mandatory minicamp when everybody is here, we will meet and discuss it.”
Bowles added he will be crystal clear to the players regarding what they are allowed to gamble on.
“They will know exactly what they can and can’t do,” Bowles said.
Joe doesn’t have a problem with the league banning players from gambling — so long as the owners, team suits, coaches and all league employees abide by the same restrictions.
Remember: The players get 50 cents on every dollar of revenue the owners bring in relative to the salary cap. That revenue stream from casinos would dry up quickly if it was proven a player or two either threw games or others were on the take with the racket.

It would be so easy for any player to have a 3rd party place a wager or 10. Best protection in regards to gambling is to educate players in money management skills and maybe have Warren Sapp tell a cautionary tale of “Hey look guys this is what happens if you don’t manage your money”.

Maybe. Remember, just six weeks ago Alabama’s baseball coach got canned because he was doing the very same thing. Sportsbook got fishy and starting running phone records (texts?) and that’s how he got popped.

“It would be so easy for any player to have a 3rd party place a wager or 10. ”
Yeah, Ask Isiah Rodgers of the Colts how that worked for him.

How long will it be before there is another “Black Soxs” type scandal?

If you are a player in the NFL – I think abstinence from all gambling is the best policy that an individual can make for themselves.
Its much easier to just not do it than worry about what you can and can’t do.
Same with substances you put into your body. If the team nutritionist didn’t definitively say “this is totally OK” – then don’t consume it.

Here’s the winning strategy, for gambling: “Don’t”

Things are totally different financially. In the old days of the “Black Sox” scandal the star players barely made enough to iive on in salary. They had to glad hand at restaurants and car dealerships to augment their income. Money meant something to these guys.
Now we’re talking about salaries north of 20 MILLION ANNUALLY for stars and multimillions for the rest. Nobody needs the money.
But there’s the rub. Nobody SHOULD need the money but there’s always some dork…that’s the guy the league has to watch for…

Take Tom’s advice and stick with crypto. You’re safe there 😉

It’s the refs I worry about. Certain beyond obvious calls and noncalls, especially in the 4th quarter, ruin games for everybody.

It seems real simple… While you are playing in the NFL making hundreds of thousands or millions to play a game, don’t gamble. The end. It really is that simple.
If you’re gambling or doing drugs because you can’t contain yourself for $1 million contract to play a game, then you deserve to be out of the league.

“…he violated a gambling rule that previously he was unaware was a violation.”
I call bull crap on that one. That sounds exactly like the PED excuse of “I am innocent. It must have been something in the vitamins I take.”
