Practice Notes From Day 1 Of Minicamp

June 13th, 2023

Kyle Trask and Baker Mayfield prepare for position drills as Bucs OC Dave Canales (far right) looks on.

The Bucs offense looked uneven today, some good, some bad. Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield hinted one reason the offense wasn’t smooth was this was the first time the defense had all starters at practice, sans Devin White and Shaq Barrett who watched from the sidelines.

* Pick! Rookie linebacker SirVocea Dennis intercepts Kyle Trask on a short pass over the middle. Usually, Trask throws low over the middle. Not this time. And Dennis housed the ball to the right side.

* Trask follows that up with a short pass to Cade Otton to the right side.

* Rachaad White runs up the middle.

* “Sneak” Vaughn got quite a bit of carries with the ones (first-team offense) today. Early in practice he takes a handoff and runs around left end. He follows that up with a run around right end.

* Joe had a very obstructed view of practice as the Bucs had a human wall standing between the area media was assigned to and the field the Bucs practiced on. Trask had a ball go off the hands of either Taye Barber (TCU) or bobbled by cornerback Turon Lowe. Either way, Lowe was all over Barber.

* Trask to running back Patrick Laird to the left side.

* Cool play: There was quite a bit of traffic around Trask who stepped to his left to avoid getting hit and lobbed a ball down the right seam for veteran receiver David Moore for a huge gain.

* Baker Mayfield avoids a sack as tight end David Wells totally whiffed on a block. Mayfield unloaded the ball short to the left sideline for Chris Godwin.

* Mayfield throws slightly behind Mike Evans along the left sideline but Evans effortlessly pulls the ball in for a nice gain.

* Mayfield throws a lateral to the right sideline for Barber and he drops it.

* Vaughn is getting a lot of touches today. He runs up the middle veering left.

* The immortal Chase Edmonds is alive! The veteran RB runs up the middle.

* Trask nearly throws another pick. Duron Lowe appeared to get his hands on the ball. While he has made some nice plays, this is easily Trask’s worst practice of underwear football this spring.

* Trask the leader: Before the snap of the ball, Trask directs Ronnie Brown into the proper position. Brown then runs up the middle.

* Trask targets Barber along the left sideline but the pass is short.

7-on-7

* Mayfield attempts to get a pass to Vaughn along the left sideline but it is short.

* Mayfield hits Godwin over the middle.

* Edmonds catches a pass on a crossing pattern from the right side and nearly scored.

* Trask with a nice pass to David Moore along the left sideline.

* Mayfield to Godwin for a touchdown to the right side.

* Mayfield connects with Barber on a slant pass. This Barber is getting a lot of targets today.

* Brandon Bouyer-Randle tips a Trask pass and it was picked by Christian Izien. Afterward, Trask had words with his tight end. Apparently, they weren’t on the same page.

* Mayfield throws long for rookie receiver Trey Palmer but couldn’t connect.

Red zone

* Mayfield then throws to Vaughn to the left side. He scores six.

* Trask throws low to Ryan Miller and the ball drops off Miller’s hands.

* Trask then throws to the left far corner for Miller and again, the two didn’t connect. The ball ends up hitting the pylon.

* Mayfield hooks up with Godwin along the left sideline. On the next play, Mayfield throws to Godwin in the far right corner of the end zone and the ball is a little long and Godwin couldn’t haul it in as the ball is off his hands.

* Trask throws to the left side and Dee Delaney breaks it up.

* Trask tries to squeeze in a pass to Rakim Jarrett and Josh Hayes breaks up the pass. Nearly got a pick. Hayes had tight coverage on the play.

David Moore is a player to watch

  2. Hodad Says:

So during OTA’s Sir Dennis picked off a pass, and took it to the house. First day of mini camp he does the same thing. Just to remind everyone it’s been 32 regular season games since White has had an interception. Yes TWO years!

  3. Dooley Says:

    ^^^
yup and he dropped on last year during the season opener, nothing but green in front of him too with them cast iron hands lol

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Anyone know if Sean Tucker, RB UDFA is cleared to play? Was he out there…

    Didn’t hear Rachaad White today…..

Thanks, Joe for making us feel as if we were there……

  5. Bee Says:

Still wanna see Trask with the starters

  6. Mike Says:

    Appreciate the OTA notes!

  7. BucsFan81 Says:

This offense is probably going to be horrible this year. I hope the QB position can get it together enough to at least be competitive.

  8. donuts Says:

Looks like Mayfield has alot of junk in the trunk to lose.

  9. AtlBuc Says:

Trask is clearly winning the competition

  10. $fan Says:

Thanks for the info. To everyone else: R-E-L-A-X. This is just the first day of minicamp. If by the third week of mandatory camp we’re still seeing the same thing, then I would be more concerned.

  11. Cmon man Says:

@AtlBuc, LMAO did you even read the notes?
Clearly Mayfield had the better practice today.
Down is up, and up is down as far as you are concerned I guess.

  12. BucU Says:

Our mighty Bucs lighting it up!

  13. HC Grover Says:

Is that a pic of a professional NFL team at work? Whoa. Looks like High School.

  14. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Is Baker taking this competition seriously? He looks like he’s been eating fried chicken every meal.

Don’t believe the hype Mayfield or you’ll be fat happy and on the bench.

  15. Shak Says:

Yeah this is already over before pads because Trask is still only with the guys who won’t be on the team in a couple months. Can’t even get in with second string guys we may keep, DURING UNDERWEAR FB!There is no way he’s getting a fair shake if this is the case, the competition is lip service.

  16. NCBuc80 Says:

Sounds to me like trask is playing with 3s and 4s while Mayfield is playing with starters. What happened to this being a competition?

  17. David Says:

Trask is throwing to second string. As I said before Joe was right all a long. This is rigged competition for Todd B. boy, Baker to start the season.

  18. SlyPirate Says:

No matter how much changes, some things stay the same.

Baker/TB12 … Throw to Godwin and good things happen.

(Hey Joe, did Rachaad White not practice?)

  19. BillyBucco Says:

I think Baker is on the Todd Bowels diet.

  20. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker Mayfield has been playing better than Brady so far in practice!! He haven’t threw 1 pick in practice yet we have another hall of fame quarterback!!

  21. Fred McNeil Says:

    Thanx for the notes. Joe.

  22. All_da_way Says:

The RBs are going to be a big part of the passing attack so having White and Vaughn as a one two punch is going to be fun.

  23. J Says:

This was a growing day. Any sideways comments about performance is a testament to your MF’ing ignorance.

  24. Obvious Says:

So Trask Is Not practicing with the 1’s. Not surprising to hear the third and forth string receivers can’t catch like the first string. I haven’t even heard the names of the guys Trask is throwing to.

So do they switch that up and Mayfield throws all day to the 3rd and 4th stringers and Trask throws to the first stringers for the day?

  25. Oneilbuc Says:

This is not a real competition Baker Mayfield has been gifted the starting job the day they snig him. I hope we win to many games to draft Caleb Williams or Drake May because the bucs will ruin their career. All they do is draft quarterbacks and ruin their careers and the media and fan base will call them a bust just like all the other quarterbacks they drafted!! We are the worst franchise in the history of the NFL when it comes to quarterbacks . Even Cleveland and the Jets can look back in find at least one quarterback they have drafted and we can’t even do that so I don’t think they will ever develope quarterback . Just build a power house defense and try to win another Superbowl that way .

  26. Oneilbuc Says:

That’s why every bucs local media or podcast has been promoting Baker Mayfield since he got here. That’s why you never hear about him throwing ints but you hear about Kyle Trask ints lol 🤣🤣.

  27. Knucknbuc Says:

Looks like evans and Godwin are back to having to carry their crap qbs again. Hopefully their backs are in good shape because that’s my guess. Moore is going to make this team as the 4th pseudo 3rd wide receiver

  28. Lokog Says:

    When do pads go on?

  29. SOEbuc Says:

They’ve really liked Vaughn since he’s been drafted. Now is finally his time and if he is not RB1 he will definitely get reps this year.

  30. Joe Says:

    When do pads go on?

Pretty sure the third practice of training camp teams are allowed to put the pads on.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Is there a reason Mayfield was throwing to starters and Trask wasn’t?

  32. Pewter Power Says:

stepped to his left to avoid getting hit and lobbed a ball down the right seam for veteran receiver David Moore for a huge gain.

Someone said something about no biscuit no they won’t ever try to throw downfield. Nice analysis of the offense. This was easily trask worse practice because of starters are on the field. He’s career backup.

So during OTA’s Sir Dennis picked off a pass, and took it to the house. First day of mini camp he does the same thing. Just to remind everyone it’s been 32 regular season games since White has had an interception. Yes TWO years!

so we need to address this–we need draft picks but Bowles lying for his sorry hold in/out arse is not acceptable

  34. garro Says:

I read that Bowles said that the QBs are going to alternate days with the ones.

  35. Drew Says:

Trask not getting opportunities with starters for third straight year. Hopefully he can get a trade to a team that will give him a legitimate shot. Slippery handed receivers aren’t going to help.

  36. Lt. Dan Says:

Love you Joe’s but….”with the ones (first-team offense)” Not necessary to point that out. You have a very savvy group of football readers. Just saying..

  37. JD Still Says:

I guess it depends on what you think the purpose of PRACTICE is, Mayfield threw almost half his passes to Godwin and Evans, good for beefing up your stats , not so good for the group you’re PRACTICING with, Kyle got all his receivers involved attempting passes to them all to see what they could do and keep them involved in the PRACTICE.

  38. lambchop Says:

Sounds like Mayfield to Godwin is getting some mileage.
