Practice Notes Day 2 Of Bucs Minicamp

June 14th, 2023

Day 2 of Bucs minicamp is in the books.

Joe had a partially-obstructed view (anything in the end zone or goal line on the right side was not clear). As for the practice, no disgruntled linebacker Devin White in sight. Mike Evans was on the sidelines in sweatpants. Kyle Trask got a bunch of snaps but overall, the offense was sloppy, especially when the team tried to throw farther than 15 yards downfield.

Or, you could say the defense was on point. They were flying around, no question.

* Joe saw Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett running 100-yard sprints as he recuperates from his Achilles injury suffered last season. It appeared to Joe that he had a slight limp. Maybe it was Joe’s imagination?

* Pick! Kyle Trask was flushed to the right and he tried to sail the ball over defenders’ heads to undrafted rookie receiver Rakim Jarrett. But that was Carlton Davis back there. He got in front of Jarrett, skied and caught the ball.

* It seems early in practice, Trask often has a pick.

* Trask is flushed left this time. He decides to tuck-and-run. Granted, it is underwear football, but the defense was getting after quarterbacks today. A welcome sign.

* Sneak Vaughn takes a handoff and runs off right tackle for a big gain. Trask is stoked as he claps his hands loudly.

* This time Vaughn runs left and past the defense for six.

* Baker Mayfield feels the heat of the pass rush and he takes off to the right.

* Mayfield throws to the right side near the sideline and nobody is home as the ball falls to the grass.

* Mayfield connects with undrafted rookie receiver Kade Warner near the right hashmarks as Warner was cutting across the field from the left side. Looked like he got face-masked as he made the catch.

* Mayfield hits Godwin on a short pass to the right.

* Warner brings in a Mayfield pass along the right sideline. This may have been Warner’s best practice. He’s flashing more today than usual.

Goal line 7-on-7

* Trask aims for the end line of the end zone and Ryan Miller makes a pretty catch for six.

* Trask throws to the far left corner of the end zone and the ball falls to the turf, nobody home. Appeared Tanner Taula was the intended receiver.

* Next play is the same thing only this time Trask connects with rookie tight end Payne Durham.

* Ryan Jensen is working on the side (so is Aaron Stinnie). A golf cart by a Bucs staffer hauling tackling dummies is coming down the sideline and Jensen jogs into its path and then lays down on the ground as if blocking the cart. What was Jensen protesting, that the guy was taking away dummies?

* David Moore pulls in a pass from Mayfield in the right far corner for a touchdown. Joe knows this because Joe heard the hooting and hollering from the offense and saw Moore run back with the ball in his hands from the right corner of the end zone. Offense wouldn’t react like that if it was an incompletion.

* Miller catches a Trask pass near the left pylon for a touchdown.

11-on-11

* Trask lofts a pass to Rachaad White in the right flat. The pass was a bit high and wide but White skied to make a one-handed grab and then turned upfield.

* Trask hits Miller in traffic along the right sideline.

* Trask threads the needle to hook up with Warner down the right seam. Joe has a hunch this Warner is this season’s Adam Humphries.

* The pride of Indiana State (Larry Bird U) Dominique Dafney pulls in a Trask pass along the left sideline.

* Tip! Mayfield appeared to be throwing to Durham on a short pass to the right but the ball was tipped at the line.

* Patrick Laird grabs a Mayfield pass on the left side.

* Mayfield throws to Trey Palmer along the left sideline and the ball is way over Palmer’s head.

* Tip drill! Mayfield has a pass tipped again. This time, Ryan Neal gets the pick.

* Jarrett goes down the right seam and pulls in a Mayfield pass and as he does get gets inadvertently clubbed in the head as he went down for the ball between two defenders.

* Trask looks left then throws right and connects with Cade Otton near the right sideline.

* It appears Trask was trying for Jarrett and the ball drops harmlessly on the sod.

* Trask was throwing deep down the middle for Taye Barber and Zyon McCollum jumps the route, tips the pass and pulls in the ball for a pick.

* Palmer has a collision with a pair of defenders and as a result a Mayfield pass was incomplete.

* Mayfield is flushed and runs right and throws the ball away. Still, Duron Lowe made a diving attempt at the pass near the right sideline.

* Taula pulls in a Mayfield pass to the right.

* Pass rush gets to Mayfield from his left and Mayfield just dirts the ball.

  1. D-Rok Says:

Great notes as usual, thanks Joe!

A lot of tipped balls from Mayfield. It’s almost like he’s short or something. 😉

  2. Rod Munch Says:

Does Warner look acceptable speed/quickness wise? His workout numbers were abysmal and he didn’t have much college production either. While I very much hate his bag boy father, I won’t hold that against the kid too much.

  3. Marine Buc Says:

Thanks Joe for these updates. Too early to tell but it sounds like Trask is outperforming Baker the past few days.

    Would you agree with that?

  4. Marine Buc Says:

    Would you agree with that?

  5. alphabetsend Says:

@Marine Buc — that is not the consensus of anyone watching + posting online on these practices.Trask has at least 4 INTs over the two days nd the most impressive touchdowns have come from Mayfield, who has thrown a single INT, just today. As written above, it sounds like both QBs had meh days on Day 2, or the defense played well.

@D-Rok- one of the league leaders in tipped balls last season was 6’6″ Justin Herbert. Tipped passes are primarily on the oline keeping arms down and working throwing lanes, not on height.

  6. Scott Says:

I’ve heard Mayfield has had issues with passes getting batted down while on the browns

  7. geno711 Says:

So is McCollum starting out as the 3rd corner meaning on the field 80 percent of the time.

  8. Dooley Says:

Joe are you still sleeping on David Moore, or has he gotten your attention yet?

  9. SOEbuc Says:

Ke’ should be a lock for RB1. Much more versatile in run game than White. Haven’t even heard anything about Tucker or when he may be able to step on the field.

  10. AtlBuc Says:

Trask is the obvious leader in this QB competition. Every day, he seems to outdistance himself from Mayfield more and more.

  11. All_da_way Says:

McCollum seems to be playing with more confidence now.

Day 1 Baker had the edge but I thnk Day 2 that Trask might have the slight edge. So far the QB battle is pretty close. Expected that Trask may need to make better reads to avoid Ints and that Mayfield will have more of hi passes tipped.

Warner is going to make that 6th WR battle really tough. Moore is a veteran deep threat WR that knows the offense so I think he sticks as the #5.

  12. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    Trask dominated today.

    Baker Bois worried

  13. JD Still Says:

Sounds like it was a great practice! Offense and Defense making each other work for what they got!

  14. Infomeplease Says:

Reality check for all you Trask fans . Yesterday KT threw 3 interceptions to BM’s 0. And KT would have thrown 4 but one was dropped. Today KT threw 2 interceptions to BM’s 1. DC says the starting qb would be the one who protects the ball the best.

After 2 days of practice KT 5 almost 6 picks to BM’s 1!!!!

So far BM is leading the qb race!!

This has been another kt reality check!

  15. Infomeplease Says:

If Trask continues throwing picks I will be forced to refer to him as “J jr” !! (Jameis Jr)

  16. Dooley Says:

You guys are realy taking a fraction of data from mini camp notes and making it out to be an actual barometer for who’s currently winning the QB competition. Go touch some grass

  17. Joe Says:

Thanks Joe for these updates. Too early to tell but it sounds like Trask is outperforming Baker the past few days.

    Would you agree with that?

    No.

  18. Joe Says:

Sounds like it was a great practice!

    Not for the offense.

  19. Joe Says:

Joe are you still sleeping on David Moore, or has he gotten your attention yet?

Makes a play once in a while. Nothing special at all (yet).

  20. Joe Says:

Trask is the obvious leader in this QB competition. Every day, he seems to outdistance himself from Mayfield more and more.

Says no one who has watched underwear football this spring.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Wow. Saying Trask dominated today is a stretch. To me it sounds like both QBs did horrible.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Is Trask not getting to throw to starting pass catchers, or is that just something the notes didn’t cover?

  23. Stormy Says:

The Cult Of Kyle is out in force today and either a) delusional or b) trolling. There is literally nothing coming out of camp to suggest Trask is ‘dominating’. If anything, it’s Mayfield with a slight edge.

  24. Stormy Says:

Lol – I don’t know how many times I can tell you and your 50 screen names – not an FSU fan either.

  25. HC Grover Says:

    Ugh!

  26. DBS Says:

Well looks like Son of Trask got run again and is back under a new name. You always give yourself away so easy.

  27. PopsMalone Says:

Appreciate the updates and your responses to these comments Joe! One more day of this stuff and you can spend some time hammering in some Big Storm brewskis for about 6 weeks. No more underwear football for you..or us! Be well!

  28. SOEbuc Says:

Trask racks up interceptions. At least Jameis racked up serious yards. Don’t know what the Bucs are now but if Trask starts it is back to the flamming dirty diaper show.

  29. BuckeyeBuck Says:

People hate on Trask for sitting behind Brady. Not throwing a young QB into the fire worked out with Rodgers and Mahomes. They hate on Mayfield for taking a team that was 1-31 before he arrived and not hitting the Big Bowl in year 4. Really? It’s CLE, running battle with NYJ for career killing young QN’s. Nice to see two guys who never had a chance get some sunshine. I think the Bucs will end up with 2 damn good QBs this year

  30. c bell Says:

Sound like R. Jarrett is getting a ton of run. Think he will make the team Joe?
Waayyyy to early to say. Training camp injuries can pile up sometimes. –Joe

  31. Craig Says:

Even if sloppy the offense seems to have progressed a step or two.

3 TDS against 1 interception for Trask is okay. He does need to get going from the start instead of spotting a possession to the defense.

Mayfly seems to be getting happy feet and that is a bad sign so early.

Good to hear of more speed on the defense. Last season’s one step away might as well have been a day late and a dollar short.

  32. Stewart Brew Says:

Y’all need to cut these guys a break. We’re only in mini camp and both qb’s are learning a new system as well as trying to develop timing with a pretty large group of receivers. This is going to take some time. Chill everyone 🙂

  33. JD Still Says:

I think there were hi lights and lo lights for both the Offense and Defense, Yes, the defense had 3 interceptions and two blocked passes against Kyle and Baker, but collectively, Kyle and Baker were 15 of 26 , with four touchdowns, not bad for the second day everyone was together! Can’t wait to see how they all progress!

  34. geno711 Says:

Craig, it looks like to me 3 TD’s by Trask when we were running our 1st and goal offense 7 on 7’s.

    Then 2 interceptions.

    * Pick! Kyle Trask was flushed to the right and he tried to sail the ball over defenders’ heads to undrafted rookie receiver Rakim Jarrett. But that was Carlton Davis back there. He got in front of Jarrett, skied and caught the ball.

    * Trask was throwing deep down the middle for Taye Barber and Zyon McCollum jumps the route, tips the pass and pulls in the ball for a pick.

It is unclear to me if the picks were 11 on 11 or 7 on 7. Obviously, 11 on 11 ability is all that matters in the end for either of these two fine men.

    Goal line 7-on-7

    * Trask aims for the end line of the end zone and Ryan Miller makes a pretty catch for six.

    * Next play is the same thing only this time Trask connects with rookie tight end Payne Durham.

    * Miller catches a Trask pass near the left pylon for a touchdown.

    3 TDs were 7 on 7’s.

  35. Joe Says:

Is Trask not getting to throw to starting pass catchers, or is that just something the notes didn’t cover?

Not much but dang, shouldn’t a guy have to earn being on the first team?

  36. PA Buc Fan Says:

Joe haven’t heard anything on Devin Thomkins. Is he there? How is he looking? I really liked what I read from you last year on him in training camp and he did well I thought with limited playing time last year.

  37. Joe Says:

Joe haven’t heard anything on Devin Thomkins.

Thought about him today. Haven’t seen him in a while, or at least haven’t seen him make a play in a while. Will try to remember to look around tomorrow for him and see if he’s suited up or just on the sidelines. Haven’t heard anything about him being hurt.

  38. ATLBuc Says:

In his interview Rashard White said Evans told him that he’s never been this open. Like I said before, BL did not know how to scheme our receivers open last year. They had to fight for every single reception. Imagine Evans and Godwin actually open! They might have 2800 combined yards!!

  39. ATLBuc Says:

We won’t hear this from Mayfield-Joe but Trask said that he spends time with and is planning to spend time with his receivers on and off the field during the 6 week break.

  40. David Says:

Baker has most interceptions and tipped batted balls in NFL in the past five years. He is not tall enough to locate his receivers with the batted balls. Trask has not have batted balls. Trask has more interceptions due to the lack of experience reading the NFL defense which will resolve as he gain more experience . Moreover he has more touch downs than Baker so far. Trask has more to learn and will get better as gets more snaps. He is basically a rookie who is getting reps for the first time .
On the other hand we are seeing a typical Baker with the same issues in six years in NFL with losing record including a 2-8 last year.
Watch out When Kyle says he is comfortable with this new offense.

  41. Delusional Intelligence Says:

Thanks for the notes Joe, I appreciate them more than you will know, even if it is patty cake football.

  42. garro Says:

So the Pic above is kinda crazy….What football drill are they doing there?
the Monty Python do your own crazy walk drill? Maybefield is just walking…

  43. micanopy Says:

Joe lays out the play-by-play as best he can. We all know it is not comprehensive. But, when you tally those plays laid out by Joe into ATT-COMP-TD-INT-TIPS, Joe gets mad and deletes your post. Why? Because it makes Kyle look better than Joe wants Kyle to be perceived? Is Joe really Baker’s agent or something? WTF?

  44. micanopy Says:

In the photo, who is the ball boy in the creamsicle jersey?

  45. micanopy Says:

Why does Joe provide play-by-play notes of practice – yeah, yeah, we all know Joe’s notes are not comprehensive – but then Joe deletes your post if you simply add up into a condensed statistical format what Joe wrote? Is it because the statistical format makes one QB look better than Joe wants, or another QB look worse than Joe wants? What’s going on here?

  46. Dooley Says:

    @garro

That’s just stretching, gotta warm those quads, hammys, glutes, and knees up to help prevent the wrong type of “pop”

  47. garro Says:

    Dooley
I”ve done tons of team strecth stuff when I played. None of it resembled that pic.
