Mystery Bucs

June 26th, 2023

Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett.

Joe likes how former NFL players and coaches now in analyst roles, guys who actually watch Bucs games, are completely lost when it comes to evaluating this season’s Tampa Bay team.

Joe shared how former Bucs quarterback Shaun King detailed why he’s perplexed by the Bucs and can’t understand why Vegas oddsmakers think they’re garbage.

Now it’s Charlie Weis’ turn. Weis was Tom Brady’s first offensive coordinator in New England and he has loved telling his SiriusXM NFL Radio audience through the past three years about how he watches every game played by his treasured “Tommy.”

Weis even drove from southwest Florida to Bucs training camp last season on his day off to check out the Bucs and give “Tommy” a bro hug.

So Weis has paid close attention to all things Bucs and noted last week, “I don’t know what’s going to happen with Tampa,” he said. Of course, Weis thinks he knows what will go down in the rest of the NFC South.

The Panthers will take a giant step forward with a new coach and Bryce Young at quarterback while the Saints are a very shaky division favorite thanks to the addition of underrated QB Derek Carr, Weis said. The former Chiefs and Jets playcaller also is confident the Falcons aren’t good despite their offseason additions.

The Bucs truly are a mystery. And Joe finds it fun. Joe wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Bucs come out and beat a severely weakened Vikings team on opening day and then follow that up with a crushing of the Bears at home a week later.

Joe also wouldn’t be stunned if the Bucs sputter in their new offense in Week 1 and end up in a fight for their lives (season?) against Chicago in Week 2.

Shaq is such a good dude man
Sadly jTS is our best pass rusher now

  2. HC Grover Says:

The Magical Mystery Season. Will it be The Miracle Bucs or The Bowles Curse.?…stay tuned to JBF for the next update….best way to spend the off season.

  3. Destinjohnny Says:

    We have 6 win talent
    Let’s see

  4. CrackWise Says:

Vegas thinks the Bucs are garbage because they brought in a QB worst then the one they drafted #1 and gave up on and are selling him as some AWESOME talent just in need of a better opportunity. This despite having a better opportunity then the QB they drafted #1

Incase yall don’t know. Bakers career numbers are worse than Winstons. Like across the board worse INCLUDING INTs per year!!!

  5. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I echo your last paragraph. The season will be a mystery until it’s over.

  6. Craig Says:

Modern medicine can be a miracle at times, so we have to hold onto hope for Shaq and Jensen.

The oddsmakers are expecting a GOAT hangover. The Goat, though, has been gone from here for two years. Brady was just Brady last season, so the true hangover was last season.

This season is a whole new page. If any of the three QBs can master Canales offense the team will be close to fine. The run game should rise from the bottom because Canales seems to understand match ups and how to counter them.

  7. Mark2001 Says:

Said it a month or two ago. The first two or three games will tell us a great deal about what this team really has going for itself this year.

  8. Bee Says:

Everything about this team screams top 10 2024 Draft pick…

  9. Buc1987 Says:

Bee… that was funny. I agree too!

  10. Rod Munch Says:

I’m going to guess that the Bucs come out in week 1 and beat the Vikings and look great, then the week 2 game vs the Bears is rescheduled due to a hurricane (which of course doesn’t hit Tampa since no hurricane has hit Tampa in over 100-years), then each week for the rest of the season a new hurricane threatens (but never hits) causing practices or games to be canceled as the Bucs sputter to a 1-16 record.

  11. SlyPirate Says:

    EFFECIANT OFFENSE
The Bucs are going to be able to run the ball behind Wirfs and Feiler for 3-5 yards consistently. The run will set up high percentage passes to Godwin and Evans for first downs. 3rd down conversions can go to RBs, WR, or two big TEs (Otton and Payne).

    ST SETS THE D
The Bucs offense will eat clock and keep the defense fresh. The Bucs have a MONSTER Punter who can pin the opposition and make them go the length of the field.

    FAST, DISRUPTIVE DEFENSE
There is speed and size everywhere on the this defense. Look for them to create 3 and outs, sacks, and turnovers.

If the Bucs can limit turnovers, they will win a lot of games.

  12. CrackWise Says:

SlyPirate, I just fell in love with you. LOL

Love how QB does not factor into the equation. Which makes me hate you. You can’t have your meat, if you don’t have your pudding….

    Wait….. DOPE!!!

    Great Post my friend!!!

  13. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

What did this have to do with shaq

  14. Hodad Says:

Underrated Carr? If anything he’s the most overrated, over paid QB in FA. Tell me again how many division titles, and playoff games he’s won in all his years as a Raider?

  15. ModHairKen Says:

I’m sorry but Charlie Weis is simply unlistenable. Boring. Offacious. Argumentative. Takes forever to make a point. Acts like he was a success.

Sad that you have to listen to him, Joey. Let’s see. Weis has THREE Super Bowl rings and sent three different quarterbacks to the Pro Bowl with three different teams. Joe doesn’t “have to” listen to anyone. –Joe

  16. Statguy Says:

Lol how is JTS out best pass rusher when he was outplayed by Anthony Nelson? And our nose tackle is a more complete pass rusher than him also

  17. Pickgrin Says:

    “underrated QB Derek Carr”

So Derek Carr at $38M per year with $60M Guaranteed is “underrated” and presumed to be a good move by most……

Baker Mayfield (who has a double digit win season and a playoff win under his belt – Carr has neither with 4 extra seasons as a starter) is signed for $4M + incentives to replace “Tommy” and all the talking heads seem to thing that was a trash move….

    What am I missing here?

The Bucs got a steal if Baker is even halfway decent and can move on easily if Mayfield sucks. The Saints got fleeced unless Carr has the best season of his career and are stuck paying Derek a kings ransom for 2-3 years even if he doesn’t play up to expectations…..

  18. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    Sly Pirate.

    This isn’t 2002.

Baker had Cam Akers run for 100+ yards a game and yet couldn’t get 150 yard and more than half the games.

Rams were last in the league in offense. Now you know why.

  19. CrackWise Says:

Jeff let me help you out, I know its hard for some to connect dots.

Shaq just like the Bucs team as a whole = Unknown

Shaq is just the poster child for the UNKNOWN BUCS, which has everything to do with the article.

    You’re welcome.

  20. CrackWise Says:

    Uknown/Mystery

  21. DRFEELGOOD Says:

You can’t blame the Rams being last in the league on Mayfield. He wasn’t there for 13 games and didn’t have their top two WRs ( one being Cooper Kupp). If anything that speaks to reasons for hope with Mayfield. I’m skeptical but hopeful. GO BUCS!!

  22. The Beer Whisperer Says:

What we know, at this point: Nothing…. Just endless speculation. Only flapping of the gums, coulda-shoulda-woulda, yada yada yada.

  23. stpetebucfan Says:

Jeebus Trask guys! What has Kyle actually accomplished?

Well he had two “decent” seasons with the Gators. That is not exactly like taking the lowly Browns to the playoffs and then beating the Steelers on the road.

One thing is for sure the OL better be GREAT if Trask is the starter.
In his 3 seasons at Florida he averaged -0.8 as a soph…didn’t really play that much so I’ll cut him some slack but his BEST year was .8 yards per carry for a career average of .4 per carry against COLLEGE competition while Mayfield has a career average of 2.5 per carry upping that to 3.0 with the Rams.

So if Trask is the starter we’ll be back to Brady’s statuesque performance in the pocket so his ARM better be FIRE!!!

  24. destinjohnny Says:

so lets start the debate. how is more elite, Anthony Nelson, or JTS.
    those are our two best……

  25. garro Says:

    Yup Joe.
It definitely could go either way. Especially early in the season.
Weis and many of us here see all of the question marks but, also the talent all over the roster and have to say I don’t know. ???

  26. Crickett Baker Says:

Rod Munch, I am not 100 years old and I remember 2 hurricanes hitting Tampa straight on. One, I think was named Donna, but I lived in Tampa and remember TWO eyes of hurricanes passing through.

  27. Roc Says:

    Really a mystery???

Without the Goat and a LOSING HEAD COACH we really think the Bucs will be anything this year

WHAT change makes you wonder Joe
Firing coaches. jJUST NOT THE HC
    Replacing some players
AND not to mention From Brady to Mayfield

No Mystery we win no more than 5

  28. Paratrooper Buc Says:

The mystery will be solved by game 4-6. We will have a feel for how good or bad the team will be. My gut says the best case is 9-10 wins with lots of luck and more likely 6-7 wins.
