Bucs Cleaned Up In The Draft Based On Former Scout’s Analysis

May 3rd, 2023

Owned the draft?

Last weekend, 239 college football players got drafted. And if you respect the eyes of NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah, the Bucs came out of the draft with a haul.

Joe trusts Jeremiah, even though he throws some curveballs. For example, in his final mock draft, Jeremiah had the Bucs selecting Ohio State receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Yeah, that was unusual.

The reason Joe puts a lot of stock into Jeremiah’s eye for talent is he learned scouting at the feet of Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome.

Newsome could be honored as a Hall of Fame general manager one day. He built two different Super Bowl teams. The man knew how to find talent.

So Jeremiah typed an article listing where his top-150 graded players in the draft went. The Bucs selected seven of Jeremiah’s top 150 players.

The only Bucs player not in Jeremiah’s top 150 was Kansas State defensive back Josh Hayes.

Here is what Jeremiah typed about two Bucs picks:

No. 26 Calijah Kancey
Kancey is a short, compact DT with rare twitch and explosion. He is at his best against the pass. He rockets out of his stance and wins early in the down with quick hands, leverage and a burst to close. He is very sudden to change direction and cross the face of blockers. However, if he doesn’t win early, he struggles to free himself and gets stuck. In the run game, he relies on quickness to shoot gaps and disrupt. His lack of size (6-0, 280) shows up on occasion, with him getting washed right down the line. Overall, I wish he was bigger, but he’s a very dynamic and disruptive presence along the interior.

No. 39 Cody Mauch
Mauch is an excellent athlete who plays with balance and awareness. In pass protection, he pops out of his stance, stays square and sinks his weight. The North Dakota State tape shows him effortlessly sliding and mirroring opponents. Defenders get to his chest on occasion and there is some concern about his lack of length. That might be a reason he kicks inside in the NFL, although he was able to anchor and settle against FCS competition. In the run game, he has a powerful inside arm to uproot defenders and he looks to finish them to the ground. He is excellent working up to the second level, redirecting and adjusting to moving targets. He smothers linebackers. Overall, I think Mauch might need some time to adjust to NFL competition, but he should settle in as a solid starter somewhere along the offensive line.

Jeremiah didn’t have any analysis after pick No. 51 but here were the rest of the Bucs picks that made Jeremiah’s top 150.

No. 102 YaYa Diaby, No. 103 Jose Ramirez, No. 133 SirVocea Dennis, No. 135 Payne Durham, No. 149 Trey Palmer.

So basically all but one Bucs draftee was in the top 63 percent of the draft. That’s not too shabby, folks.

Sounds good to me. Hopefully they develop. I’m not absolutely down in the dumps like one of the Joe’s, but the lack of development from edge rushers in Bowles’ career is definitely alarming. I’m feeling very optimistic, actually. Very happy with this class.

    It was a good day.

I’M VERY HAPPY WITH OUR DRAFT..ALL THESE GUYS SEEM TO HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BE STARTERS..,EITHER PLUG & PLAY OR NEXT YEAR..BOTH OFFENSIVE & DEFENSIVE LINES HAVE IMMEDIATELY IMPROVED..CODY MAUCH & RYAN JENSON ARE GOING TO BE FUN TO WATCH THIS YEAR ( BASED ON THE TWEET OF RYAN JENSON SHOWING OFF CODY’S PICTURE ON INSTAGRAM) LOL..SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SEASON ! I BELIEVE WE ARE GOING TO BE MUCH BETTER THAN MANY OF THE (SO CALLED EXPERTS) THINK ! (NO MATTER WHICH QUARTERBACK WINS THE STARTING JOB )..THIS COULD BE THE YEAR WHEN REDHEADS DOMINATE ! ! !

Joe- Ozzie newsome is already in the hall of fame as a former player for the Cleveland Browns. I believe once you are in, you don’t go in again for another role.

As for the Bucs, I liked nearly all of the players selected and think overall talent level of team improved. However was not a fan of mauch pick as they keep trying to find lightning in bottle they got with marpet. Just take a big school guard or right tackle if you want a player to contribute immediately and especially in the second round. If you want to take a flyer on a small school kid needing a position change then do that in the 5th round or later.

But I love the FA rb from Syracuse. I think he will be rb2 by the time team starts reg season

Not so high on Jeremiah Joe but I found this interesting nonetheless.

  6. Beej Says:

I refuse to read anything Tommy writes until he learns what the ,@$&¢¥ing CAPS key is

  7. garro Says:

    Same here.
Unless he can come up with a plausible excuse.
And post it like the rest of the normal world.

  8. Old School Nole Says:

Beej and garro, I’ll summarize: HE’S VERY EXCITED!!!!!

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It sure looks like we helped our special teams with many of these picks……I’m excited by the speed and athleticism of most of them.

  10. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

    All older then wirfs

  11. So there's Hope Says:

This all sounds good when nothing else is going on we will see who can play at the next level when mini camp starts. It’s all the crap shoot those who have the natural god-given talent and are hungry usually rise to the top

  12. Irishmist Says:

I just read a story on the 2020 1st round draft class. 20 out of the 31 were busts who didn’t get a second contract. It reminded me how lucky we were to get Wirfs that year.

  13. Leopold Stotch Says:

Would you guys rather have Tommy “Caps Lock” Mordue or The Realist with his “herding the sheep” and “the reeeeeeeeeeeal fans know the truth!!!!”

  14. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Interesting Article Joe! I was unaware Jeremiah had us rated so highly.

  15. Orlando Kevin Says:

    Another good article… great job

  16. stpetebucfan Says:

On paper at least the Bucs were VERY successful. They got faster!

  17. Cobraboy Says:

At least Bowles can develop corners and safeties.

Imagine the disaster if he couldn’t develop DB’s AND edge rushers…

  18. Allbuccedup Says:

I guess if we cleaned up in the draft there are no excuses for making a playoff run. Oh wait Todd Bowles is still the coach!

  19. sasquatch Says:

    Hey TOMMY MORDUE,

Have you still not discovered the CAPS LOCK key? Is it glued down on your keyboard?

Your posts are basically the equivalent of YELLING EVERY WORD.

    ——————————————————
Um – more like 31 out of 31 “didn’t get a 2nd contract” – YET. Not because they were all busts – but because they have only played 3 years of their initial 4 year deals…

Was this “story” written in the future?? LOL

  21. Pickgrin Says:

Perhaps what you read was saying that only 11 of the 31 2020 1st round draft picks had their “5th year option” picked up by the team….

That doesn’t necessarily mean these teams won’t re-sign the player or that the player is a “bust” – just that they want to see the player fulfill his contract and show consistency on the field over time – before committing the multi-millions that the 5th year option and/or longer contract represents.

If you look at history – 1st round draft picks on the whole “bust” about 48% of the time. So if 15 of those 31 players don’t resign with the team that drafted them – it will be an average year…..

We’ll know those results a year from now.

  22. MadMax Says:

Im def feeling some awesome vibes with this draft!!

I think the whole cov thing knocked down some guys stats and draft statuses that wouldve fared better w/o it….Awesome spying SpyteK and Scouts!!! 🙂

You guys have my fantasy job….well, other than being the lead sports illustrated swimsuit model photographer lol
