A New Quarterback On The Market Who Has “Been There”

May 6th, 2023

QB hunting.

In case you missed it, the Bucs only have two quarterbacks on the roster. The team has given no indication it plans to head into battle with just two.

This week, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht dropped in on SiriusXM NFL Radio and was asked about a third-string quarterback. He noted that he wanted a backup who has “been there, done that.” Joe immediately thought of Joe Flacco, who is currently panhandling for work.

Well, yesterday a quarterback was released by a middling team. And this time, too, it is a quarterback who has been there, done that. He’s a journeyman who pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Super Bowl history.

Nick Foles led the Eagles over the Belicheats for a Super Bowl win after then-Eagles starter Carson Wentz blew out a knee late in the season. Foles was released by the Colts, where he was a backup last season.

Now Joe isn’t saying Foles is the answer to the Bucs’ problems. Except for a short stint playing for Andy Reid and the aforementioned heroics for the Eagles in his second stint there, Foles is a journeyman.

Banking on Foles to lead a team, well, you’re better off calling St. Jude. At least you can write off the loss on your taxes as a charitable donation and you know the cash is going to a good cause.

But if the Bucs are looking for a No. 3 quarterback who has “been there, done that,” Foles fits the description.

Foles would be great. Not a threat to either. But could give vet perspective

  2. Dooley Says:

I say eff it, just bring Josh Johnson back home lol

  3. Scott Says:

Buc Fer Foles! Hasn’t he came in for a visit before?

  4. Sean Says:

    Great take Dooley

    Bring him home…..

  5. Tim Says:

Napolean Dynamite could be our third QB, but Uncle Rico might get jealous.

  6. Marine Buc Says:

Carson Wentz would actually be the best fit for the new offense…

  7. MadMax Says:

Foles should be a done deal!!! Count on it, as long as he’s understanding of our cap situation and team friendly!!

I was going to suggest him in the earlier article a few days ago, but I saw where he was already with a team, but no longer. Now he’s teamless.

Perfect situation Mr. Licht. You knocked the draft out of the park, now knock this 3rd QB vet out of the park please….

  8. sasquatch Says:

They have to do some maneuvering under the cap to sign the rookies. So, I don’t think they’re gonna be signing anyone who isn’t taking pretty close to vet minimum.

  9. FlBoy84 Says:

Still remember sitting in the stands watching Foles lead that 4th quarter comeback against us his rookie year in ’12 with like 6 minutes left down 11. Seems like he’d be a solid #3 at this stage of his career, though Flacco would be a good one too. Personality match should probably considered to an extent as well.

  10. Allbuccedup Says:

Licht says the cheapest is the best Ryan Griffin come on down.

  11. Pewter Power Says:

He may be trash now but doesn’t mean Bucs can afford him.

  12. FlBoy84 Says:

    @sasquatch,

Bucs were $55M over the cap and yet had a fairly solid offseason re-signing David, Nelson & Dean and bringing in Mayfield, Gaines, Edmonds, etc.. Fairly certain they have a plan to create space to sign the rookies and bring in another FA or two.

  13. sasquatch Says:

^Yeah, that maneuverability isn’t infinite. They’re scraping bits from the bottom of the pan right now. If they could sign Evans to an extension, that would help get us there. The other option are undesirable (giving D. White an extension or renegotiating Shaq). So, it’s not simple.

  14. Buc4evr Says:

Matt Ryan is the answer if this team wants to win this season otherwise stick with Mayfield and Trask. Not happy with the reference to St. Jude. Not clever or funny Joe.

  15. EEK Says:

    Sure.
Whoever is 3rd doesn’t matter from a playing standpoint
If the guy plays it is a lost season regardless.

If Foles is cheap and a great QB room guy with SB winning experience, he would be perfect.

He has been on some horrible QB teams since his Philly days so that would give me pause a little.

  16. Leighroy Says:

Carson Wentz?? His only fit is on the swashbucklers squad. 2 weeks of that and he’d be on injured reserve for them too.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

Interesting scenario here. I would say take Bridges. But he is probably almost fried due to injuries and potential For Please no Matt Ryan unless he is just there in the QB room giving advice. But hell, ain’t that what we pay Arians for?
And please no Wentz. He’d even have the OC throwing interceptions. Hate to say this but Foles might be our best option.

  18. Idahobucfan4life Says:

Well, he can catch the “Philly Special.” The Bucs had to remove that play from their playbook while Brady was in town.

  19. Rod Munch Says:

People are insane to want someone as boring and uninteresting and as washed up as Nick Foles here.

    Literally insane. Certifiably so.

  20. TampabayDJ Says:

No CAM NEWTON ! I’ll take any of the QBs said above ^^ before Cam “Thinks he’s the greatest ” Newton. Dude is locker room poison. Go Bucs

On another note, why don’t our Bucs offer Brady the same deal that the Fins tried and failed to do

  21. FlBoy84 Says:

Newton seems to think his hair length is the reason he’s unemployed, so… lol

  22. SB~LV Says:

Are they really trying to win?
    Really?
    Posturing

  23. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Bring in the 3rd QB, and absolutely, bring in St.Jude.

St. Jude won’t count against the salary cap, and should have some pull with “Man Upstairs”

Every now & then, luck and a prayer, seems like the only option, lol

  24. The Beer Whisperer Says:

News Flash: There is only a minute chance, the 3rd QB ever sees the field. His job will be morale support, and clapping. He won’t even hold a clip-board.

  25. rrsrq Says:

So does Cam, bring on Cam

  26. The Beer Whisperer Says:

The signing of St. Jude will have a bigger impact on the Bucs, than the 3rd QB.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

    It’s a 3rd QB.

Go get the GOAT farmer from Hard Knocks, see what he’s doing, and if want to help the Bucs get the #1 pick in 2024!

  28. Voice of Truth Says:

No mobility – bad fit – likely we go with someone that can run the O we are installing regardless of age….

  29. Redeemer Says:

Tim, I bet I could throw a football across them mountains. Back in 82, id take state.

  30. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Voice

Exactly… These folks calling for Matt Ryan and Nick Foles don’t seem to understand we are not running the same offense we were running with Biscuit Arians and Tom Brady.

If they brought in Carson Wentz he would probably become the #2 QB behind Baker.

  31. The Beer Whisperer Says:

I’m thinking, all these old unemployed QB’s are there for a reason.
They all have the same thing, in common.

Picking one over the other, is like splitting frog hairs, lol

  32. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Can St. Jude scramble out of the pocket?

    If so, he’s the guy.

  33. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

If we wait long enough, America’s Quarterback Jameis Winston might be available.

  34. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Yep, there’s no rush to find a crappy QB.

  35. firethecannons Says:

    i like trevor siemian

  36. Tiny Dungy Says:

at minimum salary, Foles would be good as would any mobile QB.

What about Trevor Semian (not sure I got the spelling right)

  37. Touchdown Cleaning LLC Says:

Throw cam in there for vet minimum and see if he beats baker since he complained about the bucs signing of Mayfield

  38. Tackleblockwin Says:

    @Marine Buc

I agree with you. I like Foles, but Wentz would be correct fit for what we are probably going to do offensively. No you got me thinking lol. Is Baker better fit than Trask? Hmmm.

  39. steele Says:

Wentz, Foles, Ryan. These guys can start and win some games. Is the plan to bring in a starting caliber veteran, or a pure backup who has no itch to start, or a memory of having been a legit playoff or SB QB once upon a time?

A lower key type who is a dedicated backup like Siemian or Chase Daniels would seem to fit better.

  40. Jim Says:

How can the worst GM in the league sign another QB when the Bucs are now overt he salary cap yet again? Time to fire JL.

  41. IE Buc Says:

I would bring in Josh Johnson or Chase Daniel. No to Flacco, Ryan, or Foles. I’m not sure they would fully embrace a coaching QB3 role. A hard no to Newton and Wentz. Under no circumstances. They would be toxic to the team.

  42. David Says:

TEDDY TEDDY LET’S BE REAL HE WOULD COME IN AND WIN THE JOB CALL HIM UP JASON

  43. Rand Says:

    A.J. McCarron

…. Not happy with the reference to St. Jude. Not clever or funny Joe.

I thought it cool of Joe to observe a helpful charity.

  45. garro Says:

    Romo for me.
He won’t be afraid to tell Mayfly to STFU.
