With all of the Bucs’ three division rivals stocking up on offense, the Bucs decided to counter with a defensive pick. Defensive tackle Calijah Kancey of Pitt is considered by some the next Aaron Donald. He’s apparently that good.
Here is what SIS Football Solutions had to type about Kancey.
Kancey projects best as a penetrating 3-technique in an even-front scheme at the next level. While he still needs to develop as a pass rusher, he should find success there with his high motor and quickness off the ball. His ability against the run, working both laterally and vertically, using quickness and strength, should allow him to see plenty of playing time on early downs as a rookie. On 3rd downs, allowing him to penetrate and just get after the quarterback is where he will find the most success. His strength and relentlessness should allow him to see some time on special teams, even outside of punt return and field goal block.
Yup, he’s a run-stopper. Just like Todd Bowles likes.

Dumb organizations make dumb pics !!! Could have traded with the Steelers and got a 2nd or 3rd rounder.. Why draft Logan Hall last year, but I guess they are worried about Vitas weight and motor because some had him in the second, but of course they take a flyer on their first when they needed OL help ??? They say he’s got a good motor and was voted defensive player of the year in the ACC and let’s hope he’s another Donald. Only time will tell, but I wish they would have traded to get more capital because of all the needs !!! We need a tackle, CB because Davis is soft as butter and a safety. Texans came to play tonight and landed Young and Anderson ( and will say this now, but they could have the best offensive and defensive players of the year ) We freaking took a DT at 17, but it’s going to be a loooong year and PLEASE trade Devin and get a 2nd and 3rd for his ungrateful and lazy Azz.. Tank for Caleb is in full effect and the next pick needs to be a tackle and Mike Evans and Devin White hopefully are on the Bills radar and it’s time to capitalize with picks and maybe Davis at WR!! Hmmm didn’t like where we picked him with Nolan Smith there. That said he could be a stud. Donald fell to 14 after all. So him not going first is just a silly comment.
In any case glad we didn’t go QB or Branch. Now let’s trade up in round 2 and go Dawand Jones!

I agree with Bee, Levis and the Vol kid are not the answers at QB, wait until 2024. If Mayfield/Trask implode and the Bucs go 4-13 then they will be in a prime spot to get a qb for the new head coach. If Mayfield succeeds then awesome! So now on day 2 Licht needs to get some beef for the OL.

I love the player, but how does he fit our scheme? He’s a perfect 3-tech in a 4-3 defense…but we don’t run the 4-3 anymore. Where’s he going to play? DE in the 3-4? Isn’t that a thankless block-eater position?

If Vita takes on two we might actually have a solid up front in 3-4 and be able to get the qb. I would have like OL more, but D line was my number two. I ain’t mad about the pick if he is good.

Jim seems to forget that Donald wasn’t the first pick either even though he was thought highly of. He went at 14. The comp I’ve seen the most for Donald is John Randle. Youngsters might not be as familiar, but Randle was a monster. He was Sapp before Sapp. If this kid can be 75% of Donald we’ve got a great pick on our hands.

Anyone that thinks this was a good pick needs to be drug tested like Jason L !!! What a joke and I will respect them if they trade White for either a 2nd or 3rd, but the Bucs turning into the Yucs !!!! Todd Sucks and to all the fans that like this pick how are they going to protect Baker ?? Once he gets knocked out and Kylie takes over the sheet show begins and why take a flyer on a player like this especially in the first round. Geez, do some of you even use your brains? We have one guy talking about talking about if he were so good why didn’t he go first or second when literally the point of the article and video was Donald dropping to 14th. Then we have him talking about it was dumb to take him at 17 when we actually took him 19th. We have others talking about we should have gone OL in the first, despite the fact that JL hits on lineman’s no matter the round. This is truly sad.

Man I cant believe all this negativity. As bucs fan the sh** has been deep and because of a couple of Brady years you guys forget that.
This kid was best available and hes a beast at that spot. The best OT’s were gone. And for him to still have been there was a no brainer for us because if his value. Luke will move to right. Whirf’s to left. You got hainsey and Jensen ( who can both start guard or center) and felder who is a starting guard.
Baker has better running around ability and will create different angles to throw from and give mike alot of 50/50 jump balls when hes in a pinch. And 90% of the time he catches it or gets a DPI.Dont forget mike got manzeil drafted and baker is a better version of him. There are a sh** ton of positives to look at right now. Reserve your negativity for week 7 or 8 when we realize we are still the bucs and our coach is trash ……

Matter of fact , Donald was picked after late . We picked Evans ( And I wouldn’t have it any other way as he’s the best offensive player ever on our Bucs) and a lot of other teams picked players that were bust over Donald and Sapp. So chill out and stop complaining about everything our Bucs do . I truly believe that bucs fans will be wearing Baker Mayfield jerseys for a while. Dude has had a different offensive coordinator almost every year in the league. The guy is a dog and a hell of a teammate. Yes he’s not TB12 but who is it anyways? I’m rooting for Baker and I got a conviction that he will be in Tampa to stay.
