Shaq Barrett Shares Key Update On His Rehab
April 15th, 2023How about good news for a change on this Saturday morning? And the news is coming from Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett.
Specifically, the news is about Shaq’s rehab from a blown Achilles in October during the Thursday night loss to the Crows.
Appearing on the No Off Days podcast with WTVT-TV Channel 13 sports anchor Scott Smith and news anchor Chris Cato, Shaq he should be ready to play Week 1 in September — at the latest.
“We have enough time where we don’t feel we have to rush anything,” Shaq said of his rehab and his trainers. “I’ll be ready to go. Hair on fire.
“I can’t wait. I miss the game so much this past year. … The absolute latest [trainers] will have me back and ready will be by Week 1.”
That is just fantastic news! Now, can Shaq also play near his level before blowing his Achilles An Achilles injury is often bad news for 30-year-olds. Very bad. Remember, an Achilles injury killed former Bucs running back Earnest Graham’s career. Shaq apparently knows the grim realities but he added he’s not going down without the fight of his life.
The injury “isn’t going to take me out of the game,” Shaq said. “I’m going out on my own terms.”
Give it hell, Shaq!

Lets all pray he can come back anywhere near his former self.
April 15th, 2023 at 6:11 am
The team sure needs him! đđ˝ Shaq can get beck to 100% soon.
April 15th, 2023 at 6:29 am
YES, LETS ALL PRAY THAT HE CAN COME BACK FROM THIS SEVERE INJURY & PLAY AS HE WAS ABLE TO PLAY BEFORE, HE’S A GREAT PLAYER & WE NEED HIM HEALTHY AS BEFORE…THIS DEVIN WHITE SELFISHNESS HAS ME PERPLEXED, HE KNOWS WE ARE CAP STRAPPED THIS YEAR ( 11.7 MILLION FOR A ONE YEAR FRANCHISE TAG ?)MOST OF US NEVER MAKE THAT IN A LIFETIME..THE BUC’S WILL GET HIM HIS WANTED CONTRACT NEXT SEASON..WHY BE SO ARROGANT & HURT THE TEAM WHEN WE NEED LEADERSHIP LIKE YOURS THE MOST ?,DEVIN PLEASE BE REASONABLE THIS SEASON, NEXT YEAR YOU’LL GET YOUR BIG CONTRACT, EITHER HERE OR WITH ANOTHER TEAM ( HOPEFULLY HERE )IF YOU LEAVE & LAVANTE RETIRES, WHO’S GONNA TEACH THE NEW KID LIKE LAVANTE MENTORED YOU ?LINEBACKERS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A BUCCANEER STRENGTH ( GOING BACK TO THE BEGINNING OF OUR HISTORY, WE COULD ALWAYS COUNT ON GREAT LINEBACKER PLAY)..PLEASE DON’T HOLD OUT & LEAVE US IN A LURCH THIS YEAR,WE NEED YOU,WE WANT YOU TO STAY HERE IN TAMPA, WE ALL DO..

It’s hard to tell if he’s blowing Sunshine for one more payday, BUT I Love the attitude! Hopefully he’s a one in a million. We’ll know soon enough.
On second thought, we better draft a pass rusher very high because odds are, well let’s just say it’s a Great idea to hedge our bets…. Hopefully we’d be getting “in front” of the eventuality.
Too bad we have so many holes because it would be a better idea to draft two pass rushers. Maybe next year. We always seem to be behind the curve in that department. Same with QBs. We “almost” got smart enough to develop a QB before it fell apart. But AS ALWAYS, WE BLEW IT! Seems when Bruce went the entire brain trust walked out with him…
Bowles was NEVER going to develop a QB. He’s just not designed to see a step into the future. To bad Arians didn’t write down instructions for him to follow like an erector set. Then again, he would have thrown the treasure map away. Probably read like Chinese writing to him.. He refused ALL things Bruce. He wasn’t very bright in that sense as we all know since he turned a potential Super Bowl roster into the laughing stock of the NFL.

Why do people feel the need to yell there message at everybody from a rooftop… He was on Loose Cannons as well and seemed pretty convinced he would be back for week 1. He was also excited for the season genuinely
April 15th, 2023 at 7:14 am
Why do we have so many holes? Bad personal management I suspect I guess they thought Brady was going to play until 50.
April 15th, 2023 at 7:42 am
Love the attitude.
April 15th, 2023 at 7:48 am
Hope he can recover, but it seems once you blow out your Achilles , even if you do come back you are not the same. Time will tell, but the Bucs still need to draft another edge because JTS canât compensate for losing Shag on the other side.
April 15th, 2023 at 7:51 am
Shaqâs play was fading fast prior to his injury. This will not work out for the Yucs. Heâs a rotational player at best now.
April 15th, 2023 at 7:57 am
We’ve got to pay him regardless of his condition….so let’s certainly hope he recovers.
April 15th, 2023 at 8:07 am
It also killed Richard Sherman. He was a shell of himself after his Achilles injury
April 15th, 2023 at 8:20 am
Hopefully Shaq can come back and bring a spark back to the team.Yes alot of holes to fill but gotta have faith in the process.Hopefully they can work something out with Devin cause we need our strong defense to carry us again like they did 2 years ago.

“Welcome Back Shaq!”
Hell Yeah!
Go Bucs!
April 15th, 2023 at 8:48 am
I say
“Welcome Back Shaq!” because it has a ring to it and to help motivate him in his rehab and because he actually wants to be here!
Been through serious rehabs 3 times and once for an severed Achilles.
NONE were what you would call fun. As he said when it keeps you from the things you love it is …lets say difficult!
April 15th, 2023 at 8:51 am
HypeâŚ..he knows heâs not what he used to be in most fans eyesâŚâŚ.and in reality

Again,
Nothing on Jensen who tore his ACL. Played one game and could not play a second game.
Typically, the only reasonable treatment for ACL is surgery which Jensen did not have.
I will be waiting for the article on Jensen. But really think we will be seeing the Joes talk about Ryan is still recovering and resting and they hope to see what he can do in 2 weeks or a month.
April 15th, 2023 at 9:08 am
Joe and others:
Terrell Suggs – In 2012, Suggs suffered a tear of his Achilles tendon. He underwent surgery and returned to play the next season, earning votes for NFL Defensive Player of the Year and going to the pro bowl at age 31.
Jason Peters – Also 2012, Peters suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon. He underwent surgery and missed the entire season. He returned the following year and was named 1st team all pro at age 31.
Cameron Wake – In 2015, Wake suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in week 7, but he returned the following year 2016 and played in all 16 games had a strong season with 11.5 sacks. He made the pro bowl and was 2nd team all pro. He was 34 years old.
So, when you say that Achilles injury is bad for a football player over 30, very bad. Let’s wait and see or at least give twice as many examples as I have just given to prove your hypothesis.
April 15th, 2023 at 9:18 am
Geno, Nice work. I remember each of those instances and was particularly impressed with Suggs. He was just as beastly post injury. And he’s a bigger guy than Shaq, as is Peter’s. Cameron Wake is probably the best comp body-wise although as we can see each case is different and there doesn’t seem to be much consistency from physique to physique. All comes down to his specific injury and his rehab and his desire to return to form.
April 15th, 2023 at 9:29 am
Geno711 ⌠Good research.
Joe, check that comment. Youâre down on this injury but itâs not all bad.
April 15th, 2023 at 9:32 am
It would be coaching malpractice to count on Barret.
Bowles should build his D as if Barret is not on the roster.
If Barret comes back and ays decently, it’d be a bonus.
April 15th, 2023 at 9:34 am
@geno: those three represent what % of over-30 players rehabbing from an Achilles?
Can it be done? Of course. Is it likely? Decidedly not.
April 15th, 2023 at 9:34 am
Heard him say this days ago on a pretty good podcast loose something or another
April 15th, 2023 at 10:15 am
Love Shaq, the player and the person. Maybe he can spend some time with Cam Gill, who has flashed real potential. Since JTS is on the train to bustville and Logan Hall is nt even good enough for the train, we need a Cam Gill to explode.
Great news from Shaq.
April 15th, 2023 at 11:18 am
He will probably come back to soon and not be effective. The way Bucs luck is he will struggle along with Jensen and possibly Godwin.
April 15th, 2023 at 12:00 pm
He just wants to make sure we don’t draft his replacement.
April 15th, 2023 at 12:19 pm
Shaq could end up in the Bucs ROH. He has a great attititude and he can take Devin White’s defense captain spot this year.
April 15th, 2023 at 12:39 pm
Losing him and Jensen were huge last season. Both players were sorely missed. Welcome back shaq and Ryan.
April 15th, 2023 at 12:50 pm
Love that last line JOE. give âem hell Shaq. LETS GOO. this should be the attitude of ever buc player that dawns a Jersey. Training as if itâs the fight of you life to get better man DW45 take note of a tru professional n stop being a DIVA
April 15th, 2023 at 12:54 pm
I would believe it more if he said âweek fourâ or âsecond preseason game.â âGame one at the latestâ sounds like bravado or cock-eyed optimism, imo.

1. I have no clue how well Shaq’s recovery is going.
2. I have no clue what percentage of players over 30 recovers well from Achilles injuries.
Yet, here is some simple math. Joe brings up Richard Sherman. So, based upon guys mentioned on these pages so far, it appears that 75% of them recover well. So, I am not sure that I agree with your simple “Decidedly not”
3. (for the 3rd time on Joe’s blog). I am more concerned about Ryan Jensen coming back at his age then I am Shaq Barrett at his age.
Too much focus on Shaq’s injury. Too little focus on Ryan’s injury.
April 15th, 2023 at 2:35 pm
Shaq will be fine. Achilles arenât the career killer they used to be. As far as blasting White for wanting more money after his fourth year. Canât blame the guy. He is one bad play away from losing so much money. His approach is definitely flawed but canât hate on him for wanting money.
April 15th, 2023 at 3:09 pm
Geno711:
There are exceptions to everything. Just because you can find some guys who have recovered from a blown Achilles does not diminish the severity of the injury. In Joeâs eyes, itâs irresponsible to suggest Shaqâs injury is no big deal because some guys have bounced back.
April 15th, 2023 at 3:18 pm
Shaq is my favorite player on the current roster. Hopefully he is still young enough to make a full recovery. If he could get back to where he was then our defense is on a whole nother level. He is a difference maker. Foâ shoâ
April 15th, 2023 at 3:35 pm
Draft a decent pass rusher Bucs with one of your 1st 3 picks. Coming back from an injury like Shaq has is quite difficult. He will probably be about 75% of what he was. He will play and flash. But his best days are behind him.

Wow huge misquote from me. Try again. Never, ever did I say Shaq’s injury was no big deal.

But that is what you get from media sources these days.
Twist of words to their own agenda instead of actually debating the points.
April 15th, 2023 at 4:38 pm
By the way, Joe, look in the archives.
When Joe did 20 to 30 articles on JPP’s broken neck and him likely never coming back from it, I kept point out that it appeared to be a non-displaced fracture that was more than likely to fully heal. A injury that is much better than extruding herniations in the neck for long term problems.
My last comment on this thread.
Thank you as always for letting me post!
April 15th, 2023 at 6:02 pm
Hopefully he can come back and give us double digit sacks again. I donât see another 19.5 sack season but even just 10 sacks would be a major improvement .
April 16th, 2023 at 6:08 am
Achilles injury rehab has come a long way in the last 20 years. Joe needs to give the old narrative a rest. If he rehabs hard, he’ll be back as good as before. No doubt.
April 16th, 2023 at 6:12 am
Joe. Do some research on Achilles injuries and current rehab and recovery. Talk to a freaking doctor or PT. You have the resources at your fingertips but you still choose to use outdated information.
Did you know that doctors also no longer believe in bloodletting? Medicine has come a long way since the professionals wore the plague masks and beyond.
