Kyle Trask Said Bucs Told Him About Starting QB Race

April 17th, 2023

Bucs QB Kyle Trask.

So right now, April 17, the Bucs starting quarterback is Kyler Traskfield.

That means today no one knows who it will be. Third-year quarterback Kyle Trask, a former second-round pick, has been told by the Bucs what to expect as the team started its OTA workouts today.

“I have been told it’s an open competition,” Trask said.

So it’s between him and free agent signee Baker Mayfield.

Trask added he believes the biggest issue he needs to work on is consistency. If he masters that, then he believes he will be in good shape.

As far as playing in his very first NFL regular season game last year in Week 17, Trask said it was “awesome” to finally play real football and not having to lead the Bucs’ scout team for a change.

Trask completed three of his nine pass attempts in that game.

  1. Pewter Power Says:

Hopefully he sees what’s in front of him and prepared like a starter this off-season. It’s in everyone’s best interest that baker has to work harder for the starting job. If he can beat out baker then it means he’s better than what we saw or the bar is set real low at quarterback

  2. atrain300 Says:

If Trask can’t be out Mayfield, then he’s a bust and the Bucs will need to draft/sign a QB in 2024.

  3. SlyPirate Says:

2nd string was an open competition, too. He lost to Gabbert. Twice.

    Just setting expectations.

  4. gp Says:

Get some juice, make some noise, be the alpha dog and take control!
Worry about consistency after you prove you can be the leader.
If not, you will ride the bench until Baker gets injured or pulled.

  5. Buc4evr Says:

    Bucs need another veteran QB.

  6. Marine Buc Says:

I can’t wait to see Kyle Trask play an entire half of football with the starting offense…

IMO this organization completely bungled the last regular season game in Atlanta last season.

Instead of allowing Trask to play the entire game – gaining valuable experience and gaining the necessary NFL game film to analyze – they play Tom Brady for a worthless half then Blaine FREAKING Gabbert for a worthless 3rd qtr.

Then Trask comes in for a worthless 4th qtr playing with the backups.

This was typical Bucs brain dead BS and was a complete waste of an opportunity.

  7. Tucker Says:

They have seen him more than anyone in practice and if he isnt getting it done in practice than why would he perform all of sudden in a game. Fans assume it was him playing with the scout team being the problem but what if that wasn’t the problem? The fact that the bucs went and signed Baker is a real telling sign of what they think and you can see the excitement of the players when they talk about Baker they never mention Trask.

  8. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

If trask was the answer baker wouldn’t be here

  9. Infomeplease Says:

So the qb with the quickest handoff and best play action wins?

  10. BucU Says:

If Trask can’t win the starting job in his 3rd yr then Licht made a horrible mistake picking him in the 2nd round.

  11. Goatfarmer Says:

Marine, I agree that Bloweszo completely bungled that last game. Starts the game like they’re playing to win the game, I thought “OK, just please don’t get anyone injured but at least Tom won’t have a losing season to blemish his resume’. “

Then the Goobster, then Trask with the nobodies. And Bloweszo ends up losing, in preparation for the home annihilation against the Cows. It was a half-pregnant game. In the hindsight, yeah they should have played Trask the whole game if they were going to lose so badly anyway. And based on the Cows performance, the Falcons loss did the Bucs no good at all, unless Bloweszo was preparing them to get blown out. If that was the case, mission accomplished.

  12. Infomeplease Says:

Marine Buc: “IMO this organization completely bungled the last regular season game in Atlanta last season.”

Did you watch all the games? The organization pretty much bungled 2/3 of the games!

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Marine Buc is right….that game was a waste of a good opportunity for Trask. We may never know his true value.

  14. Rod Munch Says:

Bowles completely misplayed that last game. The Bucs offense FINALLY did something vs the Panthers, ended the game on a roll, so with a veteran team, the thing you do is sit everyone and get ready for the playoffs.

But, ok, you’re not going to do that… Well, when the Bucs offense comes out on the opening series, is on fire, marches right down the field and gets a TD and no one gets hurt, FANTASTIC! Now sit everyone and call it a day.

But, no, that dope Bowles leaves all the starters in there, and Leftwich catches up with the offense and brings all the momentum to a halt. A truly terrible job by Bowles. Plus, while I’ve never been a fan of Trask and said so since day 1, I still wanted to see him get a chance to play for an extended period of time just to see what he’d be able to do in a meaningless game.

  15. B.D Says:

Some players don’t show very well in practice.I hope Trask is like that you
never know, might come out with hair on fire in real game.

  16. kyle Says:

mayfield is the bucs qb period.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Jeff’s grandpa … ‘If trask was the answer baker wouldn’t be here’.

Do you really think we could get by with just one QB? I’m surprised we don’t have a 3rd competitor in the mix yet.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Rod … ‘Bowles completely misplayed that last game. The Bucs offense FINALLY did something vs the Panthers, ended the game on a roll, so with a veteran team, the thing you do is sit everyone and get ready for the playoffs.’

Seems like a high percentage of JBFers wanted Bowles to sit all the starters for that entire last game. Instead he took a middle-of-the-road approach, and ended up losing the game after we were leading at the half 17-10 by pulling the starters.

And I’m not sure I’d view the Panthers game as a success, other than we did outscore them. Bucs were behind 21-10 late in the 3rd quarter and the Panthers were driving to put the game away until SMB intercepted Darnold at the Tampa 2-yd line. Bucs offense responded after that with 3 TDs in the 4th qtr (2 of them off TOs) to win the game. So really we played well for one quarter in that game. Maybe that’s why Bowles took the approach he did; I don’t know.

  19. Goatfarmer Says:

Another way to say it – Bloweszo makes poor decisions in advance of a meaningless game and during a meaningless game. Par for the course for the quadruple season loser.

But it’s a lot better to take a couple hundred words to say that.

  20. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    Kyle is pissed.

  21. Dooley Says:

“The Bucs offense FINALLY did something vs the Panthers”

This is why they were in the final game. We’re talking about an offense that up until that last game averaged 8.2 points scored in the first half of games over the course of the game. At no point in the season did our offense “just turn the lights on” so when you’ve got a group that’s been underachieving, you d*mn right you play them in a “meaningless” game because they need as much confidence as possible cause they sucked all season run & pass. I will say though, if you’ve never been on a coaching staff or been coached, you’ve got no idea of the logic behind playing your guys when they’re struggling. It took overtime for us to beat the damn Cardinals

No it wasn’t. Sorry to break that to you.

But this year is an open competition…for 2nd string. No way is the #1 spot truly open.

  23. David Says:

Trask will play most of 2023 games even if he does not start due to an injury to Baker or Baker’s poor plays. There is no real competition as Todd b. already has Baker as his stating qb to save his job by wining the lousy south division instead of wining a super bowl within the next few years. Tampa can win the south with any qb anyway.

  24. Goatfarmer Says:

Bonzai – with the head coich on death row do you really believe he’ll start Mayfield if Trask is better? Really?

Let’s see your sources on that. Research. Data.

If you believe Trask is better but Mayfield will start anyway then fire Bloweszo yesterday. Yes this is a repeat exchange. And yea, you are still a Trask Suppression Conspiracy advocate.

  26. Rod Munch Says:

Defense Rules – The Bucs offense had the most momentum they had all season, which was a very low bar. Bowles leaving the guys out there to sputter out, was a HUGE misplay on his behalf. Do I think they win the Cowboys game if he doesn’t do that? No. But do I think they look a lot better and do more than put up some garbage time points? Yes. I said it at the time as well, so it’s not just Monday morning QBing. Just more proof of the incompetence of Bowles.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Dooley – Again, it’s a low bar to clear, but that Carolina game WAS the best they had looked, at least since maybe the first half of the first Falcons game, before Brady hurt his hand.

Also, no, for a veteran time that could use some rest, let them have that rest and believe that, maybe, finally, things are clicking.

THEN to have the Bucs come out hot vs Atlanta – OK, perfect, you proved me wrong, now get everyone out of the game… But no, old dummy left everyone in, watched the offense come to a sputtering stop, then pulled them, leaving the impression we’re back to the same-old garbage, and we were.

  28. Goatfarmer Says:

Lads — the great Defense dRules is a big Bowels supporter. He goes at great lengths to cut and paste copious stats and goes to the ends of the earth to extract rare “interpretations” of actual events.

The facts and results tend to differ from the Great One’s very well thought out dissertations. But he will certainly out-type everyone else to prove everyone else to be inferior.

Shocking he’s not writing for JBF.

  29. Trask To The Future Says:

They should let Mayfield start. He’ll go 1-3 after first four games then they will let Trask shine the rest of the season.

  30. Bucsfan13 Says:

This whole Trask and backups thing is so overplayed. Trask threw some bad passes in that ATL. The throws lacked velocity. That doesn’t have anything to do with the receivers. Bad throws are bad throws. He deserves a shot at the starting spot, but he threw some pretty bad balls in that ATL.

  31. Trask To The Future Says:

    Goatfarmer,

You couldn’t hold the jockstrap to Defense Rules’ knowledge of the NFL and his thoughtful posts giving his deeper analysis. You’re just mad that the guy doesn’t only post immature insults like you do with every single post you make.

Your “schtick” has gotten so old and everyone on this board is laughing at you.

  32. David Says:

Tom Brady was running and managing Bucs as long as he was here including who should be his back up or playing a meaningless game against Atlanta to evade a losing record. Tampa sat Trask for the past two years just to please Tom B. There were no open qb2 competitions for the past two years as you Trask haters claim. Nor there will be an open qb1 competition this year. This club is one of the worst teams for qb rookies to play for as they have no idea to train and own home grown qb.

  33. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Goat

“Lads — the great Defense dRules is a big Bowels supporter.”

Please keep in mind – Todd Bowles is the Head Coach of the Bucs. We are all fans of the Bucs – therefore we should all hope and pray that Todd Bowles becomes the most successful Head Coach in NFL history and wins more Super Bowls than Bill Bellicheat…

I highly doubt that will happen.

However – I do believe Todd Bowles is a very effective defensive coordinator who needs to improve as a head coach and motivator.

Let’s see how things go this next season. Keep in mind our current salary cap limitations – $75M of dead cap space…

  34. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

I think of Mayfield and Trask as Dallas and Fort Worth.

Mayfield is a fast talking boogie slickster.

Trask is a humble aw shucks country boy.

But games aren’t won and lost based on public speaking skills.

Baker gets up there and charms the room. Trask is trying not screw up and focuses on his humility.

I will say this – being a QB in the NFL takes a bit of brashness. We saw Trask’s play on the field at Florida – definitely he was confident. But after being in Tom Brady’s orbit last 2 years humility was his survival mechanism. Tom doesn’t play nice with rivals – real or imagined. But Tom is gone now. If Trask is going to grab the reigns of this team away from Mayfield he’s got to find the edge he had at Florida. Practice, preparation and study are necessary requirements, but to be a leader of men you have to be an alpha.

This is where Mayfield has the advantage over Trask. He’s been the alpha – knows how to be the alpha. Kyle is figuring it out how to do it at the NFL level – how to turn that honest humility into being able to impose one’s will and solicit buy-in and belief. Success on the field is part of that process.

    Day 1 in the books.

So the Bucs weren’t suppose to sign a veteran back for backup money? Or you believe Baker is a legit NFL starter?

  36. C.j. Massie Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai. Competition between Trask and griffin? Oh, ok.

  37. Wild Bill Says:

The bucs needed another qb regardless of how Trask plays next season. Foolish to annoit Baker as the bucs new hero qb. Both qbs need lots of practice with the first team guys and an equal shot during preseason. Play the both equally with both starting guys and backups. Let the better player based on equal play opportuniyy be the starter. I frankly see eneither one a sure thing.

  38. Brazen Zebra Says:

Tom Brady had to wait. Aaron Rodgers had to wait. Steve Young had to wait. 3 outta 9 in his first NFL game? Kyle Trask will wait a long time.

    Excellent post!
I didn’t expect you to see the reality of the situation so soon, based on previous posts.
Trask has a hill to climb, on the “alpha” side of the equation.
He obviously has talent, but that doesn’t always translate to NFL levels.

Impressing (questionable) coaches, and getting the trust and backing of the other players is the most important thing.
Fan support is the LEAST important factor.

  40. Oneilbuc Says:

David. I agree 💯 percent bro I’ve been saying the same thing for a long time now . That’s why I’ve said that you can’t keep blaming the quarterbacks at some point you have to start looking at the organization. You can’t keep telling me it’s the quarterbacks when this franchise has never developed a quarterback that they got out of the draft. If the bucs tank we will suck for the next 10 years. Don’t know if Trask will be good are not but what do know is they have done a bad job in developing him so far. You don’t develop a quarterback by allowing him to practice only with the practice squad and scout team. This franchise had a quarterback to sit for 2 years and in those years because of Brady you never let him get reps with starters which means you still don’t know if he’s good or not ? The blame goes to the bucs organization!!

  41. Buccos Says:

Trask never had a shot to be Brady’s number 2. Gabbert was preordained for that role. Trask did the same thing in college though, he waited his turn. He was the top QB in the top division in the NCAA. He was a Heisman front runner. He was drafted to learn from the GOAT, to be like a sponge. Now is his time. If he cannot beat out Mayfield then that is a problem. Although most teams need more than one good QB to make it through a long season. Hey atleast BA didn’t leave BL in charge when he left. Everyone is undefeated right now

  42. Goatfarmer Says:

So glad to know that a poster with his love interest in his screen name also loves a pontificator on the site just as much.

And sport, if everyone is laughing at me, mission accomplished. If you haven’t figured it out yet, that’s why I post here. I don’t give a flock other than I want the Bucs to win and believe that after 2023 is over we will have a chance.

    Humor. It’s fun.

    Entertainment. It’s fun.

And being a Bucs fan, which is about a whole team not just one player.

And if your boy is what you think and he’s not getting his chance, you should be the first one screaming the loudest for Bowels to be fired.

I tried to make this one longer with more words.

    Have another barbitol.

  43. garro Says:

We wouldn’t have near as much to argue about if Bowles had done the smart thing and put trask out here with the ones for a half of real football last year.

  44. Hodad Says:

So if Trask couldn’t beat out Gabbert for the back up job why is Gabbert gone? Why has no other team picked up Gabbert? As long as Tom, and Lefty were here Gabbert was always going to be Tom’s wing man. This will be Trask’s chance, he’ll either win the job, or he won’t. The last two years he’s been here to watch, and learn, he never had a chance to compete. Anyone who says different isn’t being honest. I’m hoping Trask surprises, and from what I know about Trask the person, I hope he succeeds.

  45. Jonny Says:

@Hodad, the practice coverage by JBF and other local outlets reported Trask’s struggles during training camp both the years. It is entirely possible that Gabbert is bad, and Trask was worse.
