Has The Tom Brady Effect Evaporated?

April 12th, 2023

“That’s cold.”

Does Devin White try to force his way off the Buccaneers if Tom Brady is still quarterback?

Joe has to answer that with a “No.”

Yes, 25-year-old White’s current tantrum because he has to play this season for $11.7 million would be a terrible look across the NFL if Brady was the Bucs quarterback. After all, players and coaches yearned to work with Brady and, allegedly, The Goat made everyone around him better.

With Baker Mayfield fighting for the Bucs’ starting QB gig, White doesn’t stand out like an extreme malcontent because it almost looks like he doesn’t want to be part of a rebuilding job in Tampa.

Yes, White’s trade demand is all about cash, Joe believes, but Joe acknowledges it could be about a little something more.

Maybe White has a fear of losing Lavonte David and Todd Bowles next season and wants job security now? Perhaps White has soured on fans that give him a hard time on social media? It’s possible White is bitter because Vita Vea got a massive contract extention late in his fourth season and the Bucs wouldn’t do the same for him — like they did for Jamel Dean.

Regardless, Joe thinks the presence of Brady would have kept White quiet and compliant with his current contract, though possibly miffed behind the scenes.

It was a huge mistake not to do a full rebuild this year. This duct tape patch job has only will ensure that the Bucs will be bottom of the division even longer.

  2. KingLDavid54 Says:

It’s worth repeating, the character contrast between Lavonte David and Devin White couldn’t be clearer. Devin White’s loyalty is a fog, that disappears when the wind redirects!

  3. KingLDavid54 Says:

Devin White was apparently asleep for those Character Counts lessons back in elementary school

  4. Dooley Says:

Perhaps the Bucs made Devin White an offer that he felt was lower than his asking price. Could be for him to get locked in at a figure that would reflect what he fells his value is as a healthy asset, instead of waiting, possibly getting hurt and taking a lower offer. Nobody really knows but the people involved, and if I were the Bucs I’d stall White out til he blinks or I can find a deal to get him closer to what he wants monetarily. I’ve said in one of the other D.White threads, it is really sh*tty timing on Devin Whites’ part.

  5. Beej Says:

White would likely be better in a 4-3 scheme. Middle lb’s in those aren’t so much responsible for pass coverage

  6. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

I BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOUR SAYING JOE…I DON’T BELIEVE DEVIN IS HAPPY ABOUT ALL THESE THINGS YOU’VE MENTIONED, HE DOESN’T FEEL APPRECIATED ENOUGH BY THE ORGANIZATION..HE NEEDS A LONG TERM CONTRACT LIKE JAMEL DEAN GOT..WE’D BETTER DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT OR WE’RE GOING TO LOSE HIM..HE’S THE ⚓ ANCHOR OF OUR DEFENSE ONCE LAVANTE DAVID RETIRES..HE’S EARNED LONG TERM STABILITY WITH THE BUCCANEERS, HE NEEDS TO BE HAPPY TO BE A BUCCANEER AGAIN..SOMETHING HAS TO BE WORKED OUT WITH HIM..IF IT’S TOO LATE & HE’S FINISHED WITH US, THEN TRADE HIM AS PART OF A PACKAGE TO SECURE THE # 3 PICK WITH THE CARDINALS IN THIS YEARS DRAFT !..USE THE PICK FOR THE TOP LEFT TACKLE IN THE DRAFT, WILSON OR O’CYRUS TORRANCE COME TO MIND..IF QUARTERBACK IS A PRIORITY THERE IS NO ONE WITH MORE NATURAL TALENT THAN” ANTHONY RICHARDSON” AS OUR FUTURE FACE OF THE FRANCHISE..,ARMSTEAD AT EDGE OR VAN NESS AT EDGE WOULD NOT BE BAD PICKS HERE EITHER..THE BUC’S NEED TO MAKE A DECISION ON DEVIN WHITE FAST, WE DON’T NEED ANYBODY DISRUPTING THE LOCKER ROOM THIS YEAR..

  7. Pewter Power Says:

Now you’re wearing something I don’t say a lot. First it has to play off on the field can’t say his effect has worn out just a few months after retirement

Secondly if dude made it known he wanted to be the highest paid linebacker then it wasn’t likely Brady. He’s like Winston he wanted a huge mega deal regardless of his play which saying it’s unrealistic is an understatement.

He ain’t gonna do anything but play out the year. He is on a fifth year option and if they wanted could franchise tag him again until they find his replacement. Whether he balls out or not don’t pay him and make a mistake like with Lombard Lenny. He won’t play up to the money you give him

  8. Joe Swanson Says:

Most players are driven by $$$$$$$ only. Brady was an exception.

  9. FlBoy84 Says:

Think this is more of a reflection on Bowles than Brady. Philly or maybe a team like Detroit seem like possible trade partners. Both have a need at LB, along with the draft capital and cap space to make a deal. They also both have solid HC’s, with both guys appearing far superior going into year 3 than Bowles going into year 6. Was a little worried about both guys in Yr1, but they’ve proven to be good coaches. Campbell in particular has done a great job motivating a questionable roster to play above their talent level. What a novel concept… a HC leading and motivating his team to perform instead of putting that responsibility on the players lol.

  10. RagingBrisket Says:

What is it with entitled losers, needlessly starved for attention that feel the need spray their mediocre commentary across the public square in all CAPS?

  11. Oddball Says:

Agree with Beej. However, now White is a locker room problem. Perhaps our “savior” linebacker can save us with a couple draft picks?

  12. Yeah, sure thing Says:

What “Da Bucs Guy Says” is 100% spot on with his comment. Well said

  13. SB~LV Says:

    It has gone from effect
    To
    Affect

  14. Dooley Says:

“Devin White was apparently asleep for those Character Counts lessons back in elementary school”

    😂😂😂😂

  15. ModHairKen Says:

Of course the presence of Brady has evaporated. Just like it did the day he finished in NE. just like the Montana presence evaporated.

That’s why this type of thing — this presence thing — has to come from the Head Coach. Arians had it. Gruden and Dungy had it for a while. Players better look up to, respect and want to be with their Head Coach.

    White doesn’t. Bye, Felicia.

  16. ModHairKen Says:

We never heard this from Derrick Brooks. He did his business behind closed doors. When they played hardball with him, he quietly did not show up for camp. The media and fan reaction was so hot that the team solved it in 48 hours. And then it was put in the history books and never became an issue again.

And that is why Derrick Brooks is and always will be the greatest Buccaneer in history.

  17. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

White is out for White, and IMHO even Tom Brady would not have prevented what is happening now

  18. Goatfarmer Says:

Trade him for a bag of stale oats. More if you can get it off course.

  19. 97 bucBaby Says:

It was gone after yr two of brady

  20. Brazen Zebra Says:

The Bucs ship started sinking last season. Everyone knew it. The Brady effect? It was already gone last season. He wasn’t the Brady we all knew. Sad. Nobody wants to stay on a sinking ship. It’s just human nature. No Tom, no Gronk, no Bruce. Baker Mayfield? Abandon ship!

  21. Mike C Says:

Hey TOMMY! you had your caps button stuck on…… @$$ 🤡 smh.

  22. Drunkinybor Says:

Sigh…. We can draft a linebacker that can play better assignment football. Yes he’s a freak athlete that’s great as he flies by shifty running backs. It’s great when he free lances instead of following the righted then dogs it as he tries run ro the other sideline to catch up. He ain’t no Derrim Brooks he ain’t no Hardy Nickerson he ain’t no Lavonte. He’s a bigger faster Geno Hayes rest his soul.

  23. vadertime Says:

Did I read somewhere that White was drafted in 2019? So, I’m not sure if he has the kind of resume that solicits a large contract. I say cut him loose and let the market dictate what he’s worth. The Bucs are definitely in rebuild/patchwork mode and unfortunate Bowles is too incompetent to do a complete rebuild. The GOAT took us to a second superbowl championships, against all odds. Now it’s time to start filling in the ranks with young talent that can take us into the next several years. I’m going to be rooting for Baker and I hope he is able to resurrect his career in Tampa. If nothing else, he is cheap – really cheap. Go Bucs.

  24. Goatfarmer Says:

Bloweszo is like a singularity. Sucks all energy around him in, but is so dense that nothing, not even Licht, can escape. There’s where your Brady Effect went.

  25. Bucamania Says:

Agree they should’ve traded White and others for draft picks. Rebuild instead of this retooling of an overrated roster that’s left.

  26. Rod Munch Says:

It’s hard to go from winning a SB as a rookie, to knowing you don’t have a chance in hell of getting another one with Mayfield and Trask at QB.

Also if Bowles isn’t going to do anything except continue to have him waste away, dropping into coverage on 80% of plays, his rep as a top tier interior pass rusher is going to disappear before he ever gets a big payday.

While I think he’ll be very happy to take a huge new contract from the Bucs, I think, ideally, he’d rather go to a team that has a chance and a headcoach who isn’t a born loser.

  27. sasquatch Says:

Talking about the Brady Effect is m0r0nic. It’s always about more than one player. It’s not magic. You have to keep drafting high character guys like Evans, Godwin, Wirfs, David, Winfield… And you have to win. It’s not all talk (ahem… Devin White). Everyone in the organization has to know what they’re doing. We’re gonna have to see how things go this year.

  28. BringBucsBack Says:

“Maybe White has a fear of losing Lavonte David and Todd Bowles next season and wants job security now?”

Guys that play half as well as Devin believes he is, doesn’t have to worry about job security!

  29. Mike Johnson Says:

The Brady effect evaporated last season when we backed into the playoffs with a losing record. Nobody with a losing record deserves any playoffs.

  30. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

JUST CUZ YOU YELL DONT MAKE U RIGHT

  31. LakelandSteve Says:

Lavonte David is a much better inside linebacker than Devin White and he didn’t get a 20 mil a year contract. So how could we justify giving White a huge contract when he isn’t even the best linebacker on the team. He’s not even a top 10 linebacker in the league. The Bucs recognize that and are giving him a year to prove he deserves to get paid. Bucs need to walk away from him now. The relationship doesn’t get better after this no matter what happens.

  32. Trey Long Says:

Bucs aren’t going to a Super Bowl for the foreseeable future. White knows this. He wants to be contender.

  33. NEfan Says:

White lost me when the D let Atlanta back in the game, he said he got bored in the 4th qtr. Who says that? Bowles should have addressed that and sat him a few.series or a quarter the following game. Instead in true Blows fashion he did NOTHING! Players are a product of their team environment. The Brady effect left when Blows blitzed and Kupp caught that pass in 2021.

  34. Oneilbuc Says:

The problem is the organization and the fan base act liked a bunch of losers once Brady got here. You guys made him bigger than the team and it wasn’t Brady fault. This organization and this fan base has got to have more pride for the team. The bucs organization gave Brady all the power on the team he had more power than the coaches and the GM . How is the so call Brady effect narrative doing now ?? Or what about what Brady wants Brady gets idea is doing now? Most of yall on here are in a panic now lol 🤣🤣..

  35. steele Says:

To answer the question, yes. The effect has been over. For the better part of a year. Gone, bye.

  36. Goatfarmer Says:

Osqueel, who is “y’all?” You said the defense won 9 games for the Bucs last year in an 8 win season. Name the 9 wins. Ever seen a photo of Brian Flores?

Only someone with the cognition of Simple Jack would hate on Brady, or blame the Bucs fan base for their performance problems. You’ve missed your calling. Go to the village maroon convention. All the village maroons will be there. You will surely be named maroonest of the village maroons.

You bring a pathetic sense of comic relief with your posts, so thanks for the buffoonery.

  37. Oneilbuc Says:

Goofarmer. Lol 🤣🤣 you mad because your daddy is gone lol 🤣🤣 . Call it hate all you want but your daddy ain’t coming back!! I know you thought he was going to change the culture because the media told you he would but that’s what you get for believing the media’s narratives lol 🤣 coward!!!

  38. Oneilbuc Says:

Goofarmer. And yes your daddy Brady sucked last season because he was to old and washed up. And not to mention he lost AB and Gronk that cover his decline. He couldn’t do it with just Evans and Godwin he needed 2 more hall of famers on the team I know you hate facts lol 🤣🤣.

  39. Zane Acker Says:

I’ll repeat a prior post. People who paid thousands for the privilege of seeing every home game lost a few years back may not be too keen on a so-called complete rebuild. The last one earned us a choice to draft Winston, the controversy was over taking him or Mariota. Winning a Superbowl every twenty years is nice. How many teams in our Division have? Buy most fans who go to lots of games want a competitive team year after year. There’s one word that encapsulates the reason high draft picks aren’t necessarily essential. Purdy.
