Kyle Brandt Betting On Baker Mayfield

March 21st, 2023

Bucs QB Baker Mayfield.

If Baker Mayfield is ever going to see his goal reached as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, it will be with the Bucs.

That’s the takeaway from Kyle Brandt on “Good Morning Football,” seen weekday mornings on NFL Network.

Discussing Mayfield this morning, Brandt noted this is Mayfield’s third attempt at being a franchise’s regular starter, so fail with the Bucs and he’s a career backup.

Brandt is sort of banking on Mayfield to succeed due to his intangibles (read: swagger).

“Now he may go out and throw four interceptions in the first game for the Buccaneers but I love the confidence,” Brandt said. “This is his third shot as a starter. I don’t count the Rams thing. Third shot. That’s it.

“You don’t get a fourth shot.”

Brandt then called his own shot saying Mayfield will start Week 1 for the Bucs.

Brandt makes a good point. Mayfield has shown he can play in the league and at a high level at times. He’s just way too inconsistent, or has been.

Mayfield has a chance to prove to the league he can be (is?) a top-shelf starting quarterback. It may be his last chance.

You can watch Brandt’s full breakdown on Mayfield and the Bucs in the NFL Network video below.

No because he’s a bust and should’ve been drafted in the 3rd round. Similar to that starter caliber QB we had the past few years that every team is going crazy for since he is currently a FA šŸ™„.

Baker Mayfield is going to destroy this team!

  2. Mike C Says:

“Baker Mayfield is going to destroy this team!” Lol DrAmA much šŸ¤£ smh gtfoh.

Baker Mayfield is going to destroy this team!

Might be a slight overreaction, ya think? No matter what Baker does, the team still stands. He doesn’t have a contract that will force them to stick with him. If he sucks and yields to Trask, and becomes a whiny bitch, they release him. No harm done except for a few million dollars of Glazer cash wasted.

  4. Keimosabe Says:

With all the holes on this team, baker is gonna be just good enough to keep us in no man’s land in the first round next years draft. That’s assuming he beats out Trask for the starting job

  5. Goatfarmer Says:

No, Todd Bowels has already destroyed the team. Resurrection begins after he’s fired in 2024.

  6. Mike Johnson Says:

Initially I was down on Mayfield. Still am sorta however, He’s gotta know this is his last shot at being a starter for an NFL team. Even Stevie Wonder can see it.
I do believe he’s gonna go all out and give it his all. Just pray his all is good enough for quite a few wins. No hiding in this league. We shall soon see. I am pulling for him.

  7. Goatfarmer Says:

Kyle Brandt is a hater! He hates Kyle Trask! The conspiracy is widespread. And they even have the same first name. Shameful.

  8. Buddha Says:

“Todd Bowles destroyed the team….” Really. That’s your take? What’s your evidence? Why do these players want to play with him when they could get more money elselwhere….Dean for example? Certainly, there are areas in which he needs to improve. But “he destroyed the team?” Who is it that you would replace him with? What coach would have won more than nine games with Buccaneers last year given their injuries and retirements. Why are fans reluctant to admit that the team was overrated from Day 1 once Gronkowski retired, the center went down for the season and the left guard retired. You can make a better case that BA knew how flawed the roster was going to be and that is why he retired.

  9. OrlandoBucFan Says:

Mayfield is a better prospect than Bucs have rolled out in years past, so I’ll wait to see what happens on the field before passing judgment. I am still a big fan of Trask (and I’m not a UF guy. I went to UCF), but it does not look like the “competition” will be a fair fight. Bowles wants to win and placing his faith (and career as a head coach) in the hands of someone who has never started a game is not an appealing option from him (I would imagine). I’m guardedly optimistic about Mayfield. He has everything he needs to be successful.

  10. gp Says:

It would seem, based on his college playing time, that Trask has the athleticism and skills to at least compete for the starting job.
Also based on his college experience, it seems that he doesn’t have the attitude/mentality to fight for the starting position. As I hear it, he was a ‘team’ player who waited patiently for his turn to start. That sounds kinda meek to me.
I’d love to see his abilities displayed on field, but it seems we’ll have to wait for whoever is the starter to go down to injury or gets benched. That seems to be his modus-operandi.

  11. Goatfarmer Says:

    Buddha, since you asked,

ā€” Four consecutive losing seasons as head coach (soon to be five)
ā€” From 14-5 to 8-10 with Tom Brady at QB (!)
    ā€” Without Tom, 4-13 instead of 8-10
ā€” Two gift wrapped botched, lost games as presents, for the Browns and the Packers
ā€” Poor energy and effort on game days (Tom called it out)
ā€” Sticking with Leftwurst after the Steelers embarrassment
ā€” Humiliatingly unprepared at home in the playoff game against the Cowboys, whoā€™d been in the sewer and returned the very next week. Only Bowels was able to lose so badly to them, everyone else was killing them.
ā€” A defense that so often didnā€™t know their assignments, shockingly busted coverages
ā€” The genesis of it all was the Rams final drive in the Divisional playoff after Tom heroically scrapped them back to a tie, the famous ā€œblitz zero but cover zero especially not Cooper Kupp defense
ā€” Same reasons and behavior got him fired in New York
ā€” Being a coach a player wants to play for does not equate to winning. Remember Kellan WinSlow? Loved playing for Raheehaw. Yeah.

    Shall I continue?

  12. unbelievable Says:

The B crew at GMF just doesn’t have the same energy lol

  13. Prydaā€¦Sec147 Says:

Lol the 1st comment lmao šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤” take love Kyle B. Good stuff

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Goatfarmer

I’m with you on the lack of confidence in Todd Bowles. You might find a fan more optimistic than me but you’d have to search hard.

I’ll root for Bowles to succeed as I do all Bucs…..but I certainly have my doubts.

He’s a good DC but is sorely lacking as a HC.

  15. Voice of Truth Says:

Weakest qb room in the nfl on paper and in any sane persons mind

This is like year 5 Winston just praying he is gonna suddenly change

    Max, 6 wins

  16. JD Still Says:

When you throw four interceptions in a game and you still swagger around itā€™s not confidence , itā€™s arrogance with a big helping of stupidity , ( and you canā€™t fix stupid).

  17. Craig Says:

Baker is going to have to show me. He was horrid with the Panthers, and so bad with the Browns that they sold their soul for Watson, and had to around for a year waiting on him.

My lowest confidence is in the Bowles cleaner and his screwing with toning down the offense.

I am still looking at an 8 win season.

  18. Winny Testaverde Says:

At the very leastā€¦it will make for an interesting season. The thought of The Trask Force & His Fanboys ruining 2023 was a bit much to take in/on.

Most people like a last chance redemption story. Iā€™m more confident in Mayfield making good on things than Bowles. Bowles is on bad runner since the 2021 playoff debacle vs The Ramsā€¦interviewing with The Falcons instead of preparing.

  19. Winny Testaverde Says:

Another interesting subplotā€¦who will be better moving forwardā€¦Mayfield or Watson? Watson has way more to prove/overcome than Mayfield and has wrecked the QB market along with Flying Jimmy Haslemā€¦dumbarse.

  20. catcard202 Says:

Yeah, this is Bakerā€™s make or break opportunity.
But I keep coming back to the fact that CLE would rather deal with Watson fallout & pay huge guaranteed coin than keep Baker as QB1.

That says somethingā€¦Either about the Baker perception inside Browns brass circles or additional insider info is fans will never here.

But I hope for Baker to succeed finally, even if pessimistically expecting 6-11 at best.

  21. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Goat will suffer through watching the Bucs crash and burn, but look at the bright side at least he’ll get to see Baker Mayfield throw 47 INTs in the process.

  22. BuckeyeBuck Says:

Kurt Warner has a good analysis of Mayfield on YouTube. Playing pocket statue-ball, not so good. Play-action and bootlegs, pretty damn good. Really explains why he sucked at Carolina and not so much with LA McVay.

  23. Alanbucsfan Says:

If Mayfield keeps his interceptions low like he did in college, he is capable of being special – he had 2 straight 40+tdā€™s and single digit interception
    seasons at Oklahoma.

  24. Jack Clark Says:

Baker Mayfield is perfect for the lame, boring, run the ball, then run the ball again offense. Baker Mayfield is the opposite of no risk it no biscuit quarterbacks šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚. Baker Mayfield canā€™t lead 2 minute 4th quarter drives to win us football games so Todd Bowels defense will have to stop offenses from scoring more than 10 points which means we will lose almost every game next season

F U Todd Bowels!!!!! RIP no risk it no biscuit

  25. ScottyMack Says:

Hilarious, as usual, reading the comments from those who pretend to be Buc fans. A real fan would say, “I’m not sure. I see some upside and I’m hopeful that Mayfield finally has the weapons to make him the QB he was always supposed to be.”

Nope, instead, you get the “expert” predictions from a bunch of people who know as much about football as they do about building a rocket to Mars. The future is totally unknown for Mayfield and this Bucs team and anyone who says they can already predict it is an idiot.

I do predict again, however, that the Bucs offense will no. be the problem. The defense is going to suck, Suck, SUCK! Top 20 would be over-achieving!

  26. ABucAway Says:

    That’s gold, bro. I can’t stop laughing

  27. Winny Testaverde Says:

So real fans can only complain/predict about the defenseā€¦but not the offense? Got it, ScottySlacks. Any relation to B-Rad from Malibuā€™s Most Wanted?

  28. infomeplease Says:

Most so called NFL experts/talking heads generally believe BM was as good of a signing as the Bucs budget could allow, considering all factors. Most also believe that BM can succeed and may even thrive here in Tampa. At this point I am in their camp until I’m not! Like TB12’s last season, things can go badly against him.

First and foremost the O-line. Will it be a strength or a weakness?

Then there is the running game. If the Bucs can run successfully, BM will do good. If not, things will resemble last season.

Finally, there is Todd Bowles. Will he make smart in game decisions? Will he let the offense do what they get paid to do? Will he motivate the team when things aren’t going well? Can he be a true leader when he needs to be? Can he put together a winning game plan week after week? Can he get the players, to play up to and beyond their ability all season?

At this point I believe Baker is capable of succeeding here, whether or not he does is to be seen!

  29. BuckeyeBuck Says:

Browns won 5 games in 3 years before Mayfield went there. And he only manage a winning % close to .500. Last playoff win was in 94 with Belicheat as coach. Last playoff road win was 69. And yep he sure looked like a ripe turd in Carolina, not so much in LA. Basically, you have to play to his strengths. Do a little play action, bootlegs, moving pockets. Get him out where he can see the field, he’s a normal sized guy. You want to play pocket passer statue ball, he’s gonna suck. McVay saw that, McAdoo didn’t.

  30. JeffreyLane77 Says:

I don’t think anyone will be surprised if Licht drafts a QB in rd one two or three.

  31. View from 132 Says:

After the long history of Bucs draft busts from Bo Jackson to Keith McCants and highly touted QBs winning for other teams – Doug, Steve Young, Vinny, Trent… – it would be a hilarious story that Baker Grab My Nuts Mayfield is the Browns top pick that wins in Tampa Bay.

I don’t expect it, but it would be a fun ride.

  32. Goatfarmer Says:

Leave Trask at Home predicts Baker throws 47 interceptions.

So you obviously think your boy sucks even worse that he canā€™t even start ahead of that.

What, Trask gonna throw for 60 interceptions? Maybe.

Your must be at all the practices and film sessions to know that Trask is the Special One, that he be gifted ā€œa chanceā€ after floundering for two years as a backup clipboard holder and developing such trust from the organization that theyā€™ll sign another vet on top of Mayfield, draft another, and probably sign a UDFA to compete.

Nothing spells ā€œspecialā€ like that, eh?

  33. AtlBuc Says:

I was against Mayfield but it was mostly for his lack of maturity and not knowing when to keep his trap shut. He spoke out against players who were holding out and he played a large part in Hue Jackson getting fired. But, I think he has learned from his experiences in Cleveland. In Carolina and LA he seems to have matured and become more of a leader than a distraction. So, now I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I certainly appreciate the ring Tom brought us but last year he was a part of the problem. He threw a ton of balls in the dirt and missed a wide open Mike way too many times. Between him and Leftwich our offense didn’t have a chance.

  34. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Thereā€™s always Joe favorite

    Johnny Manziel.

  35. Goatfarmer Says:

Norm Snead. Heā€™s a pocket passer. Thatā€™s our guy. Yes heā€™s 84 and in a wheelchair. Letā€™s wheel him out there and see what weā€™ve got!

  36. Smooth Bay Rider Says:

Some of you ā€œfansā€ have already written off Mayfield as a trashy bust. And it almost seems like some if you so called fans would rather be right about your prediction of the Bucs to lose and mayfield to fail, than have the Bucs win and have a QB for the near future. It makes no sense. Are you guys fans of the team or haters of players ? You guys need to get your shiza together.

  37. Goatfarmer Says:

The Kyle Trask Movement is strong, almost as strong as the Toadā€™s Bowel Movement.
