Is Tom Brady Helping Blaine Gabbert?

March 20th, 2023

“Blaine, I made a few calls.”

The pattern this season in free agency shows that nearly every player who visited a team signed with that team.

Joe hopes the trend continues with former Bucs backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who visited with the Raiders on Saturday, per ESPN.

Gabbert, 33, spent the last four seasons with the Bucs and him signing with the Raiders could help the Bucs score a late-round compensatory draft pick in 2024. (Since Joe is not rooting for Gabbert to re-sign in Tampa, why not root for the pick?)

So far, there’s no announcement of Gabbert signing with Las Vegas.

Joe wonders whether Tom Brady helped get Gabbert the interview in Vegas. Brady was/is tight with Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels, so Joe assumes Brady gave McDaniels a thumbs-up on Gabbert. And Brady likely added that Gabbert is a good personality fit with new Raiders starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo, Brady’s former teammate with the Belicheats.

Brady is known to be such a helpful dude, so Joe also is wondering when Brady will send word that Baker Mayfield should call him to discuss leading the Bucs roster.

Well if you’re backing up Jimmy G, you’re sure to get some playing time

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

They can’t bring Gabbert back to Tampa……why?

Well, it’s supposed to be a competition between Mayfield & Trask….but Trask was behind Gabbert on the depth chart….so, it would have to be a 3-way competition.

My guess is that our 3rd QB will be a later round draft pick.

  3. Dooley Says:

Lost of 1-yr deal going out, you’d think the salary cap is going up next year or something

    That’s funny.

  5. Allbuccedup Says:

Like to see the Bucs draft Stenson Bennett and see how his ego and Mayfields clash while Trask just watches.

  6. Letsbucinggo Says:

I am beginning to think Gabbert was hear just to comfort Brady during the games. You would think Trask would be on the bench trying to learn but it is what it is.

  7. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Allbuccedup

    I agree.

    S. Bennett or Max Duggan in the 5th/6th round to be the #3 developmental QB behind Trask and Mayfield would be fine.

We don’t need Gabbert back in Tampa… He is not the answer here.

  8. Goatfarmer Says:

Goon was Arians boy. Time to draft another AB, like Bennett, who has cerebral traits unmatched on the current roster.

  9. Redeemer Says:

I think Brady’s relationship with his backups improved once he came to Tampa. He knew he was the unquestioned starter. In NE, he had Jimmy literally breathing down his neck. Belichick mentioned Brady’s age and contract Situation when they drafted him. It worked I guess, Brady won three more rings there if memory serves.

  10. Nprbuc Says:

Jeeze people. We have had Trask riding the pine, NOT because he “ couldn’t beat out Gabbert” for #2 but because Brady wanted Gabbert, a veteran on the bench behind him. Trask was never given a chance and with Brady #1 who would have wanted him pulled for anyone, including Gabbert? Give the poor kid a chance. If he can’t win the battle, so be it. Everyone harping about the future being Stetson, Williams or whoever has a very short memory. Remember Winston, Marietta, MAYFIELD, etc? All expected to light the NFL on fire. Same old-same old. Compare Trasks college career against all the new saviors coming out. Let’s at least try to support the guys we have here instead of downgrading them for the next shiny object. We may already have that object at One Buc Place. Let the completion begin!

  11. Parrishbucsfan Says:

I want to get baker- ized!!!

  12. Redeemer Says:

Npr, apparently you don’t understand how pro football works. Gabbert was not the backup because of Tom Brady’s preference. He was the backup because Trask couldn’t beat him out. I can’t understand why it’s so hard to get this through many of your skulls. They had to rebuild trasks throwing motion and delivery. He isn’t what they thought he would be and he was way overdrafted. Please stop with this nonsense. Do you really believe they would hold back a player because the starter wanted somebody else? That’s asinine, stupid, and literally dumb. Brady wielded a lot of power in Tampa but not that much

  13. Usfbuc Says:

Redeemer people keep bringing it up because everything was about keeping Brady happy. He had a history in NE of not being fond of the Pats backing him up with a young QB.

Prime example of trying to keep Brady happy was bringing in AB after the head coach said not going to happen. Also bringing Jones who Brady wanted even though many of us here were concerned with his ability to stay healthy but the Bucs ignored that. We also brought in Shaq Mason and Logan Ryan two former teammates of his. It was rumored that Brady wanted Bernard who barely saw the field too. They made all these other accommodations why not one more?

  14. MadMax Says:

Im leaning towards Dorian Robinson since Hooker is going in the first, maybe before 19….just reading the rumors plus many, many years of draft experience as an armchair GM.

He’ll be a great pick at 19 and as long as his torn acl heals well, we would be set for at least 5 more years….but we have so many holes and need to trade down…..that is unless Jalen Carter is there (which would be stupid, but yeah, I’d be all over that at 19).

  15. Goatfarmer Says:

Trask is always gonna be the try hard guy who works harder than everyone, tries harder than everyone, but in the end, lacks the talent to push to the top of the next level. This is the case now.

Trask is a much more popular version of the Dardung topic. Cheering for someone to do well is fine, but recognition of ineptitude needs to happen at some point.

Apparently Bucs ownership, coaches, and management have all come to that conclusion about Trashkan. How many interviews has he been asked to do?

    Zero.

How many player meetings has Trask called, or private workouts? Zero. And a lot of that is no one would show up and pics would be taken of him playing with himself .

The fangirls cry foul. No, they say — no let’s just throw him out there because his fangirls want to see him prove he’s so much better than his own coaches and management have deemed him. AFTER TWO YEARS OF WATCHING HIM EVERY DAY. They’ve seen it for two years but the fangirls get all jazzed up about college stats and use those as the reason for him to be handed the ball.

And if this isn’t clear enough — a new system will require Trashk 4 or 5 years to learn it to any level of mental competence, and that won’t matter because he wouldn’t be able to execute it anyway due to his speed of smell processing factor.

    Go #2 go!

  16. MadMax Says:

Dam Goat, posts of the day lol

  17. Rod Munch Says:

I love Tom Brady, but I wonder if he even knew who Kyle Trask was, like could he pick him out of a line-up. I mean he probably saw him sitting in the meetings and stuff, so I assume he could, but I wonder if he could you his name or not?

I think Gabbert was maybe 10% above that in Brady’s eyes, so when he got a text from Blaine, he probably just marked it as a spam.

  18. HC Grover Says:

    The Bowles Curse

  19. Goatfarmer Says:

No doubt the Bowles curse is real, first on himself. He will never field a winning team as a head coach, ever. He could have the 79 Steelers, 85 Bears, 02 Buccaneers. He would lose more than he wins.

Which is why JL is doing everything to assure himself and the Glazers of no lawsuits or complaints for anything other than performance when they fire the Toadster on Jaunary 17, 2023.

  20. Oneilbuc Says:

Tom Brady ain’t never helped a quarterback on the roster he’s on ! It’s a whole lot of makeup up narratives about Brady by the media! And I don’t blame Brady for not helping someone to take his job either. But at the same time he could have helped Trask out this year since it was his last year.

  21. Oneilbuc Says:

Yeah ok Goatformer now you want to use the race card lol 🤣🤣 ok !!!

  22. Goatfarmer Says:

Nothing about race boob. I wanted Tom Flores to replace Bloweszo. Ever seen his picture?

Who were the 9 wins the defense against on an 8 win team? Who is “y’all”?

Ever seen pics of Jacoby Brissett and Brady together? Brissett wears a t-shirt with Brady’s image on it.

If you were any more simple, you’d have trouble cracking an egg if you threw it on the ground.

  23. Mike S Says:

A clock is right twice a day – as was Goat on his last comment.

  24. Mike S Says:

DOH I meant the comment before that one lol

  25. Mike S Says:

Goat your hatred of Trask is so insane, yet so descriptive. I am entertained.

  26. Bucsfan13 Says:

I liked Blaine. I wouldn’t mind him coming back to compete. He’s very well liked in the locker room, and he can spin it. Bowles called him one of his favorite players ever

  27. Bucsfan13 Says:

@Reedemer. The stories about a rift between Jimmy G and Tom are false. It’s been debunked thousands of times, including by Jimmy himself who rarely speaks to the media. He, Tom, and Brissett had a close QB room. They attended outside events together. There was no strife whatsoever.

  28. D-Rok Says:

Dang, ya’ll triggered so much…by what? Who cares is QB1,2, or 3 at THIS point of the year? It’s all just conjecture and well-wishes. I remain patient and so who is gonna be QB1 before I form any opinion this year’s Bucs roster/season/prognostications.

Dudes, it’s FREAKIN’ March right now!

Chill, relax, and wait about 3-4 months for this team to declare itself.

Upon watching roster moves, coaching hires/not hires, I’m more optimistic right now than I was 2 months ago. Not saying we will have a great team, or even a good team, but I’m seeing good signs from the Bucs. Will we compete for a SB/playoffs this coming season? Highly unlikely, but the Bucs AINT tanking.

  29. Goatfarmer Says:

D-Rok — with you bro. Either the team pulls a surprising 2005 type season, or they pull a 2006 type season and Bloweszo is fired. Both ways a great outcome.

  30. Letsbucinggo Says:

I see Ronald Jones trying to get a job with the cowgirls another Licht second round pick failure. Boy are we in for a ride this season.

  31. Goatfarmer Says:

Mike S — other than your homer love for #2 we agree on most things.

  32. Oneilbuc Says:

Redeemer. Brady got Jimmy G traded out of New England because Jimmy G was about to take his job. Brady didn’t want to compete with Jimmy G so he ran to Robert Kraft to make BB trade him . And that’s a proven fact it’s been documented as well. Brady never denied it or Jimmy G so stop making up stories. Lol 🤣🤣

  33. Oneilbuc Says:

Goatformer. It sounds like you a Kyle Trask hater maybe M S just want to see if Trask is good or not like I do ??

  34. Oxycondoms Says:

Trask going to have to learn a new offense. The real competition will be for backup

  35. Buc4evr Says:

I’d rather see the Bucs sign Ryan and an insurance policy if the Bucs have to pull the ripcord on both Baker and Trask half way through the season.

  36. Mike C Says:

Goatfarmer, you are so wise, why don’t the Bucs just listen to you…. ohhh yeah cause you are a know nothing Troll that’s why.

  37. Goatfarmer Says:

Osqueel — maybe the organization already knows he sucks after watching him intimately every day for two years underperform in cupcake situations, but you didnt get to see it so you doubt their evaluation, based on college stats.

    1. Name the defense’s 9 wins in a Bucs 8 win season.
    2. Who is “y’all?”
    3. Have you seen a picture of Brian Flores?

  38. Mike S Says:

Goat secretly has a Kyle Trask body pillow – he’s just trying to play it off.

  39. Mike S Says:

Yeah Goat your hate of #2 is amusing. I am entertained. And we do agree on most other Bucs related topics I have to admit.

  40. Jack Clark Says:

Thank you Tom Brady for bringing us another Super Bowl Championship. You were meant to play football until you die and we apologize for Todd Bowels cutting your career short 🙏

Then Tom Brady won another Super Bowl 2 years later 🤣🤣

  42. steele Says:

Joe “wonders”. This is the second of this type of speculation today. No evidence of any direct Brady intervention. And if there was, does it matter? Gabbert’s agent obviously is the guy connecting him with various teams.

  43. Mike S Says:

OK I watched the press conference.

What I got out of it – this blog – elsewhere – is the sell job on Baker.

Look if the guy is the obvious answer then you wouldn’t have to sell him.

A great season out of Baker would be 3800 yards 25 TDs 15 INTs. That’s best case scenario. If we got that I’d have to say for 8.5M that’s the deal of the offseason. Who wouldn’t be happy with that result?

Thing is though… Trask’s ceiling is higher. Maybe you wouldn’t get it all in season one as a starter, but you’d get it in season two.

Then again maybe Goat is right about us Gator fans – we’re delusional. Trask is the dud he says he is. But one flutter pass posted on twitter aside, the 2022 preseason game tape on Trask looked like a pretty good resume builder to me – and the 24.5 QBR Bake posted last season is pretty terrible. Consider me not sold.

    So we’ll see.

My sincere hope is they give Trask an earnest shot and not have this a competition in name only. The guy who gets the job rightfully earns it and everyone sees that.

We got months to go before this starts to shake out – so its much ado about nothing right now.

Welcome to Tampa Bake. You got some more selling to do.

  44. Mike S Says:

steele people like to say Gabbert beat out Trask. Yet Gabbert is gone and Trask is still here.

  45. Goatfarmer Says:

People — I don’t hate Trask. And I’m no Baker fanboi, either. It’s simple reality.

    — Lots of QBs pile up impressive stats in college and can’t even make it in the CFL.

    — Trask works hard. His hard work has gotten him this far — to the point where the Bucs probably sign another veteran QB and draft a QB.

    — He holds the clipboard securely

These are truths and likely assumptions. If he breaks through and wins the starting job, that crow will be delicious. I’m not an oddsmaker, I’ll leave that to the Vegas people. They tend to not favor #2.

JL is giving Bowels no wiggle room for any excuses. A losing season, making 5 in a row as a head coich, gets him a pink slip, gets us a new head coach, and then we shall see.

  46. robert ethan Says:

What’s with the Gabbert slander? If the guy who is wrote the book on QB, and the best ever to play the position are both high on Blaine, maybe there is reason. They have worked with him and watched him close up for years, it’s not half assed opinion from a keypuncher up in the cheap seats.

  47. Goatfarmer Says:

Mike S– how did you find out about my Trask body pillow?

  48. Dooley Says:

LOL ya’ll talk about the QB “competition” last season and use it to criqtique ability, but nobody mentions the difference in experience and how that factors in. “Trask couldn’t beat Gabbert” no stupid, Trask was “battling” for a back up job with a QB that was:

1.) an NFL vet when Trask was in HS
2.) Knew the playbook before Brady and Trask
3.) Probably had more trust from the HC that was fired from his last HC job with a young QB that sucked

IF your “break glass” guy is the choice between a 10 year vet familiar with the system, then what can a 2nd year QB learning the system with limited reps do to “win” a competition with the guy like Gabbert that’s like 8-9 years his senior?

  49. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    Great Post @NPRBuc!
Most here do not realize just how much Brady held Trask back, because he wanted a veteran backup!

Not sure what website doesn’t work better on a desktop. Unless said site is built specifically for mobile-only. 🤷‍♂️

  53. Buc king Says:

Brady probably cares less honestly if I was him I be bagging that blonde chick whose hollering for him.
    2. Trask was amazing qb while at Florida I seen enough football from him to see talent.
He’s tall and that helps to see things from the pocket.
1 thing he will need to do is learn the timing of his receivers.
I think Mike Chris and the rest of the receiver room would work out with him as we get close to camp days to get on track.
If I was them I would invite baker to come throw and work on the playbook routes together.

Competitive nature should drive people to be their best or give up.
Trask hasn’t appeared as a quite to me.
He hasn’t had time with the ones and it’s a new offense getting implemented.
Yes I’m sure baker was promised the job with a wink.
Will probably draft the 3rd qb or let the coordinator pick his guy up.
No matter what we need to learn how to run the ball effectively again and balance the offense out.

Still wish we beg Brady back 1 more year but it looks less likely everyday.
Regardless I think the Trask hate I’d a tad bit extreme.
Qb is a thing in the NFL that require great talent and teammates.

  54. gp Says:

It would seem, based on his college playing time, that Trask has the athleticism and skills to at least compete for the starting job.
Also based on his college experience, it seems that he doesn’t have the attitude/mentality to fight for the starting position. As I hear it, he was a ‘team’ player who waited patiently for his turn to start. That sounds kinda meek to me.
I’d love to see his abilities displayed on field, but it seems we’ll have to wait for whoever is the starter to go down to injury or gets benched. That seems to be his modus-operandi.
