Greg Cosell: Lack Of Mobility May Limit Kyle Trask

March 21st, 2023

Bucs QB Kyle Trask.

Is it Baker Mayfield or is it Kyle Trask? Bucs fans want to know which quarterback will take the snaps in September.

Since the combine, Bucs types have pounded the table that Trask will compete. But the signing of Mayfield, unless he is truly awful, seems to indicate there is a leader in the clubhouse to start offseason drills next month.

That leader is likely the same guy who has a Heisman Trophy in his safe deposit box.

One of the smartest film guys when it comes to quarterbacks is Greg Cosell of NFL Films. He gave a quick breakdown of Mayfield last week and then turned his analysis to Trask, during his regular spot on the Ross Tucker Football Podcast, perhaps one of the best pure football pods out there.

“He’s a pocket quarterback,” Cosell began on Trask. “He doesn’t more particularly well.

“He does not have a big arm, but his arm is OK. [But] he does not have a big arm. He does not have a gun.”

Cosell added a pocket passer is generally not a desired quarterback for an offensive line is being retooled. And we all know the Bucs offensive line is. So as a result, Cosell seems to believe that’s why the Bucs starting quarterback gig is Mayfield’s to lose.

Joe sees Mayfield as mobile, and new Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales has already noted that he wants to use at times a moving pocket much like Seattle did.

Is Trask mobile enough to accomplish the what Canales desires? Mayfield can. Trask? It’s unknown.

    Let’s get baked !!

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I will say this…..Mayfield sure looks more like a “point guard” than Trask…..and that’s what Canales wants.

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

LOL…….we all know it’s Baker starting….cmon now Joe.

  4. TheBucsAnthem Says:

…….and I can totally see Dave Canales installing Russell Wilson type plays in the offense due to Baker’s mobility…that’s kinda exciting to BUCS fans!!!!!!

  5. Infomeplease Says:

Baker also has real NFL experience!

  6. Capt.Tim Says:

    Trask was a wasted pick
    A weak armed statue.

  7. SB~LV Says:

    “May”

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

The Bucs drafted Trask to fit the Arians offense (although I wondered if he was a fit in that, either). It told me something when the Bucs said they’d like to sign TWO veteran QB’s in free agency this year.

  9. Dooley Says:

There are levels to QB mobility. Trask from what I’ve seen so far has good pocket presence and does a decent job feeling the rush while using his legs to slide in the pocket and delivery the ball downfield. Now if you’re talking a pocket collapsing or a run lane opening up while coverage is tight, I don’t think pulling the ball down and running is a strong suit of either of the QBs on hand. Now what we’ll probably get that we didn’t get with Brady is more PA boots/waggles, rollouts to avoid downhill rushes, and other passing concepts that demand the QB throw on the go to diversify what we do offensively in comparison to what we’re coming from.

  10. Joe Says:

There are levels to QB mobility.

    That’s true.

  11. Hodad Says:

My bet is Baker will be the starting QB. That said, what tape is Cosell looking at? There’s barely any NFL tape on Trask, is Cosell going off college tape? The thing Trask has worked on most since being with Tampa was his body, and footwork. He’s not the same player he was in college. We’ll see if he has the functional mobility to run this offense soon enough.

  12. Lakeland Steve Says:

I don’t understand why the Bucs continue to peddle this “we don’t know who our starting QB is”. Everyone knows barring injury it’s going to be Mayfield. I am sure the other starters on offense also know it’s going to be Mayfield. If the Bucs thought Trask was starter material why did they sign Mayfield. Don’t say competition. There isn’t one!

  13. Letsbucinggo Says:

I said that weeks ago but I don’t paid for it.

  14. Bucschamp Says:

Why did we draft trash again?

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“He’s a pocket quarterback,” Cosell began on Trask. “He doesn’t more particularly well.

“He does not have a big arm, but his arm is OK. [But] he does not have a big arm. He does not have a gun.”

OMG…I swear that’s a direct quote from a Tom Brady scout report. Not saying Trask is even close to Brady, but that quote gives me chills.

I really hope this is not about to restart the QB Curse.

  16. 1#bucsfan Says:

Honestly I want to see what we have in trask especially with the weapons we have. At the end of the day who ever is going to get us the most wins and into the playoffs is what really matters.

  17. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Hodad

Let’s just think about this for one second now……

Trask was a high draft pick with high expectations…..and he’s been here for almost 4 years and he couldn’t even make 2nd String backup QB role…..AND..Bruce Arians is the so called “QB Whisper” and he knows talent and knows how to develop QBs. So, Obviously….BA and the Bucs have pretty much written off Kyle Trask by signing Baker Mayfield.

I was never impressed by Kyle Trask. He doesn’t have great arm strength, he can’t really drive the ball either, his mobility is lacking as well…..PLUS, he’s a slow learner if what is being said is true about him as well.

….and if you add all of this up together, it doesn’t make for a good picture for Franchise QB at all.

Does everyone still remember the GREAT “Bruce Gradkowski”???? He didn’t have great arm strength either, but what he lacked in arm strength, he made up for in improvising and mobility…….and watching Kyle Trask from UF…..ummmmmm……hummmmm…..I just dunno….it doesn’t look like it all.

  18. Mike S Says:

    24.5 QBR

  19. Buc4evr Says:

Hard to know as Trask has mobility or not, but it is not Russell Wilson mobility Canales is used to. I thought his arm strength was Ok and he certainly is more mobile than Brady. Think his ability to read defenses fast is pretty weak and decision making is slow. Trask just doesn’t sound like a fit in the new offense? It will all play out.

  20. BuccoBruce Says:

Baker is a bridge QB They said it and it is what it is. There is a reason he is a journeyman. Don’t expect much from Baker that you have not already seen. I am focusing on who our franchise QB will be. Lamar? or Trading for the top pick Next Year.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Trask needs to be put to the test in games. Absolutely anyone here who says he is good or bad is giving opinion, not fact.

The same cannot be said of Mayfield. He HAS been tested in games, and except fore one instance, has failed miserably. Anyone saying he will be good is hoping that his 4th team is the charm. Lots of evidence to the contrary.

I get that fans want a mobile QB that can take us all the way…but that will not be Mayfield.

That said, the majority of fans wanted to tank this year, so maybe that’s why he is being embraced.

Personally, I was looking more reasons to watch the games…I don’t feel like we have that yet.

  22. DoooshLaRue Says:

I really think we’re drafting a QB, maybe a little earlier than some may think.

  23. Duane Says:

Running quarterbacks have short life expectancies in the NFL … just refer to Lamar Jackson, who missed half of his games in the last two seasons of play due to injury, and he is the most mobile of all quarterbacks.

Just when, exactly, did being a pocket quarterback become the equivalent of a low upside “game manager”? We just witnessed the value of the best pocket quarterback of all time, the GOAT, who has repeatedly been dissed as a “statue in the pocket” – while leading the entire league in passing yards and passing touchdowns two seasons ago, and was fourth in the league his last season.

  24. DoooshLaRue Says:

    ____________

    Really now?
    Majority huh?

  25. Greg Says:

“Doesn’t move particularly well” and “he does not have a big arm” is simply this guys dopey opinion.. fake news…not fact. Frankly, he doesn’t know anymore than any one of us know about Trask. The kid hasn’t even had a freakin’ chance yet. He seems smart, throws a pretty accurate ball and he had a great opportunity to sit behind the GOAT for a couple of years to soak it all in (not many get that chance). Brady proved for years a simple “dink and dunk” can go a long way if schemed properly. Looking forward to the QB competition and I’ll be routing for them both. Hell, why not USE them both in some offensive schemes? Two QB’s with something to prove… I like it.

There is a world of difference between a mobile QB who can escape and create and ones that run QB power 12 times a game. We need the former and Lamar is the latter.

  27. Mike Johnson Says:

If you cannot scamper in todays NFl then You’d better have a lazer, quick release and a hellaa O line. There are still some drop back passers. But the most effective ones can and will pull it down and run. Its why Brady got frustrated his last year. His O line was not there and he..could not run 5 yrds to save his life.

  28. Goatfarmer Says:

Greg Cosell is a Trask hater! He hates Trask!

    Waaawaaawahwahwahhhhh.

  29. sasquatch Says:

The majority of fans want to tank?

I think you may not have your finger on the pulse the way you think. Most fans want to win, always. Tanking is loser talk for football nerds who have nothing better to do than fantasize about a draft pick a year from now. Losers.

  30. Buccos Says:

If I thought that they were going to tank I wouldn’t even consider renewing my season tickets and I’m pretty sure that many other season ticket holders feel the same way. Tanking is never a good strategy because it doesn’t guarantee any success in the future either. Loser mentality

  31. SlyPirate Says:

    WHAT TRASK WANTS …

Trust me, Trask and his agent don’t want him to start. He’s not starting caliber. If he plays. he’ll be exposed and find out the NFL stands for Not For Long.

If you’re a Trask fan, you want him to be #2 and build a 10 year career.

  32. 02,20,2022 Says:

    @BucsAnthem:

“and he’s been here almost 4 years” What math did you take son????

KT was drafted Spring of 2021….sooooo…count with me
2021-2022 (Gabbert vet backup Brady preferred)[Rookie year]
    2022-2023 (Gabbert vet backup Brady preferred)[Year 2]
2023-2024 (PRESENT Off-season) Gee Golly that’s where we are now

The kid had TWO (2) off-seasons behind the GOAT. He is CURRENTLY in his 3rd offseason. since you are so wise please send me the winning lottery numbers.
I get we have some know-it-alls but I can see why people say this is a dumb fanbase. I’ll be back for training-camp Joe.

  33. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Yeah cuz every qb taken #1 is a sure thing tank away

  34. Tvan101 Says:

Baker isn’t fast enough to scramble and when he does he gets hurt. The Joe’s always going so hard for their guy they can’t see the Forrest through the trees.

  35. Joe Says:

The Joe’s always going so hard for their guy they can’t see the Forrest through the trees.

Help fill Joe in. Who’s Joe’s “guy?”

Best Joe can tell, his “guy” isn’t on the roster. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It could be Kyle Trask some day but not sure.

Who is this mysterious “guy” you refer to?

  36. JD Still Says:

Yeah if you look at actual results , Lack of mobility really hurt Tom Brady ,(LOL), and mobility has made Mayfield the oft discarded Quarterback he has become.

  37. Tvan101 Says:

One of the Joe’s has been pushing pretty hard for Baker to be the starter while trashing Trask, I couldn’t tell you which one. I would agree our qb isn’t on the roster and Trask will get his shot because baker will flame out by week 9 again.

  38. Goatfarmer Says:

And we read again, that we need to see Trask in real games.

If he’s earned it, sure. So far, apparently (judging only by what we have seen) the Bucs haven’t been comfortable throwing him out there. Just because Trask body pillow huggers want to see him means Jack squat to the Bucs. They are getting paid to make decisions directly impacting wins (and losses).

Why does he “deserve it?” All he has done when seen, is suck. That’s not how you earn your playing time.

  39. Craig Says:

It always seems like the pocket QB wins the Stupor Bowl over the run around QB.

They generally last longer too. I don’t think it is an issue if the QB can shift the pocket a few feet, and keep their eyes downfield and their feet under tham it works fine.

  40. calbucsfan Says:

As one of those Bucs’ fans that you say “wants to know” Joe, I’m quite fine with waiting to see how the Trask v. Mayfield competition play out, may the best QB win. I mean geez, it’s only March!

Let’s hope they are both given a fair shake and ample time with the expected starters and no obvious favoritism comes to light.

  41. SOEbuc Says:

Has anyone seen Ace Ventura seen where they pretend he is crazy retired football player at the mental institution in Tampa??? “Let’s see that, in super slow motion.” That play is practice squad Trask.

  42. Trask To The Future Says:

    Doesn’t move well??? ROFLMAO.

Do these guys even watch film? Oh, maybe he’s just watching “NFL Film” of which Trask has very little.

Because if Cosell just went on YouTube and looked up Trask footage he’d see Trask is actually pretty mobile and quick. At UF he often ran QB draws.

  43. SOEbuc Says:

“At UF he often ran QB draw.”

And Baker was the number one pick out in the draft.

  44. JeffreyLane77 Says:

There’s another side to this. I have seen mobile Qb’s that never fully learn to get through thier reads in the NFL. They tuck the ball and run after the first read doesn’t pan out. I remember a few years back GM’s and coaches were saying they prefer to draft a mobile Qb. The idea is a mobile qb can use his mobility while learning how to read NFL defenses. A QB tucking the ball and running is better than throwing interceptions. The problem is some of these guys rely too much on thier legs. They never fully grasp how to read NFL defenses before they get hurt. Those guys were basically thrown to the wolves in my opinion.

  45. gp Says:

It would seem, based on his college playing time, that Trask has the athleticism and skills to at least compete for the starting job.
Also based on his college experience, it seems that he doesn’t have the attitude/mentality to fight for the starting position. As I hear it, he was a ‘team’ player who waited patiently for his turn to start. That sounds kinda meek to me.
I’d love to see his abilities displayed on field, but it seems we’ll have to wait for whoever is the starter to go down to injury or gets benched. That seems to be his modus-operandi.

  46. Oneilbuc Says:

Jeff . If the bucs be stupid enough to tank for Caleb Williams I can promise you one thing in 2 years every one on here will turn against him . And then you will here how many USC quarterbacks became good in the NFL and you will here the reason why he was good was because he played in weak conference.lol 😂 watch in see and we will suck for the next 10 years just like the all the other times the bucs tank.

  47. Oneilbuc Says:

I’m sure a lot of people said the same thing about Brock Purdiy and now they don’t even talk about the 49ers lol 🤣🤣 !!!

  48. David Says:

It is amazing how Joe goes out of his way to search for any negative podcasts in the country to utilize on this website. He even know that is only way to get the fans to read all these non-sense reporting. Joe wants to make us believe Baker is another Russell Wilson to come.

    Joe,
    we are talking about an incompetent short qb with poor attitude with a big “REJECT” written all over it by three other teams. He has been rated at the bottom among NFL qb’s in the past three years. Here is his 2022 ESPN Stats;

    2,163 yds (29th), 10 TD (30th), 8 INT (12th), 24.5 QBR (31st).
Those are back up stats not a NFL starter as you advertising.

He might beat Trask in training camp as he did with his last three teams but he will lay eggs as season goes on. That is when Trask will replace him for good to become the starter as he did back in college.

  49. Gaines Says:

    Trask should have won Heisman

  50. Joe Says:

    Joe,

When did Joe write that Mayfield would magically turn into the next Dan Marino?
