Clyde Christensen Resurfaces With Tar Heels

March 2nd, 2023

Back — to coaching.

Well that didn’t last long!

When Bucs coach Todd Bowles ran failed offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich (anyone hear if he’s got a job yet?) the purge of offensive coaches included quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen.

But to make it look all cozy and warm, the Bucs allowed Christensen to first announce his retirement.

In subsequent interviews, Christensen said one reason he retired was so he could devote time to helping a family member with medical challenges.

Either that family member is feeling better or Christensen cannot get rid of the football itch.

Zach Barnett of FootballScoop.com reports Christensen has taken a position with North Carolina for an “off-field” assistant and will work specifically with top quarterback prospect for the 2024 draft, Drake Maye.

Nothing more specific is given about Christensen’s role. But Joe found it interesting that mere weeks after Christensen said he retired, like Michael Coreleone, just when we thought Christensen was out, he got pulled back in.

What Joe finds more interesting in all of this is Maye, whose offensive coordinator Phil Longo bolted to Wisconsin. How will Maye adapt to a new coordinator/quarterbacks coach.
