Bucs Get Significant Snaps From Draft Picks

March 26th, 2023

GM Jason Licht

It seems Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht deserves a tip of the hat.

NFL handicapper turned stats head Warren Sharp decided to find out what team drafts the most players who produce for their original team. And it seems Licht and his staff have done a damn good job in that area, especially when you factor in the past two drafts.

The Bucs rank No. 4 with the most snaps logged by players they drafted in the past five years.

So far, the 2021 draft class is looking shaky (though Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is on the field a bunch). And while it’s way too premature to judge the 2023 draft, top-pick Logan Hall needs to start proving his worth.

With the Bucs are getting so many snaps from the previous four drafts (2019-2022), and guys selected after Logan Hall playing a lot, Licht seems to be getting a lot out of the draft.

(Tom Brady came to the Bucs largely because of the talented roster. Who do you think obtained those players, Chucky?)

But after a two-year draft drought of impact players, guys you can’t pull off the field because they are making too many plays, Joe hopes that streak is snapped quickly with whomever Licht selects at No. 19 next month.

Yes. He and his crew are extremely good scouts. I watch the draft every year and we always get grades, but people don’t consider. Some huge misses but a lot of home runs.

  2. SOEbuc Says:

    *always get good/great grades

  3. Goatfarmer Says:

Bloweszo could make Lawrence Taylor play like Matt McCoy. JST and Logan Hall would have been DROTY candidates if playing for someone like Belichek, who can actually teach and get productivity as a result.

  4. BucsfanFred Says:

Joe, did you hit the Bromosas a bit hard?
JTS is the 2021 Draft, not 2020. The 2023 draft hasn’t happened yet. Hall is 2022. And that’s the bottom five not bottom ten

  5. BucsfanFred Says:

That said. A whole lotta mofos need to step up this year. Fingers crossed.

  6. BucsfanFred Says:

    Oops bottom four

  7. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Is it too soon to talk about who our next Head Coach will be?

  8. Rand Says:

That’s bound to happen when you incorporate so many one year contracts. The rookies are forced to contribute early if you’re going to be competitive. So it’s imperative that Licht and Co. hit on those prospects that can hit the ground running.

  9. ATLBuc Says:

One thing Bowles has done well is develop the corners and safeties. If you do t think that’s important, think back to Hargreaves, Cante, Justin Evans, Robert McClain, sterling moore, hey Jude, etc. Those guys left at the same talent level they arrived with.

  10. Letsbucinggo Says:

So many young players then why so many positions too address?

  11. Dooley Says:

You gotta think, this meter started running with Licht’s first ever selection as our GM w/Mike Evans. Jason Licht has done a solid job and being 4th on this list shows that he actually can draft and get productive players on the field. The 2019 draft class is probably one of his best overall drafts, with most of those guys going on to get 2nd deals. On the flip side, the 2016 draft is probably Lichts’ least impactful draft, but in football time that was a long a** time ago. Belicheck jumping the gun on Cole Strange draft, kind of shows the influence Licht has with some of the success he’s had targeting small school OLMen but that’s just speculation on my part.

Of course it’s easy to look at what Licht hasn’t done or who he’s missed on in critiquing him, but since 2014-15 season there have only been 6 different Super Bowl champions and Jason Licht was responsible for building 1 of those 6 teams. Also what went under the radar last years draft is that we quietly added a lot of youth in replacing vets at different depth positions.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We may see a lot more this year…..with 9 picks and lots of needs.

S, TE, DT, WR, RB, OT…….. & maybe K……(hopefully not)

  13. Da Bucs Guy Says:

I am sure that the Bucs jumped up a couple of spots on the draft snap count meter this past year, when so many FA were hurt or left in FA. And the telling stat is the win loss record with all the draft pick playing.

If you have the most draft pick snaps, but a 5 or 6 win season, then what is the point.

  14. HC Grover Says:

    Who is Logan Hall?

  15. Browntechnerd Says:

…and hey look! Only 1 SB win in that time span among all of the teams on both lists! Stats are fun.

  16. Jimbo Says:

I have no idea why the joe-joes love JL. JL is the worst GM in the league. 50% hit rate. ANy of us could do better than that.

  17. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Snaps? Snaps matter? No No and HECK NO-Quality SNAPS matter and we ain’t seen much of those out of the last 2 drafts. Your best draft pick last year was a PUNTER!!!!!

Gimme a break with the accounting BS to prop up Licht-Licht is on thin ice this year and had better ace this draft or he will be a goner with Bowles if this year is a bust like his drafts have been recently.

  18. Beej Says:

But I have it on good authority today Licht needs to be fired

  19. Mike Johnson Says:

Please Jason, Don’t be tempted to go with a kicker with one of our 1st 3 picks.
We all know you luv kickers in the draft.

  20. SOEbuc Says:

Bonzai…Yes. What the hell does Todd Bowles, first year division winner HC being fired have to do with this article? Fake azz fans. Get on your knees to Bowles because bandwagon need to find faith in a very different SBVL team. What are all you people gonna do if he succeeds or even better wins a championship??? Stop posting on JBF??? Gonna be a ghost town of trolls.

    LFG BUCS!!!

  21. Dooley Says:

Wait, so lemme get this right:

    2020-SB Champs

    2021-Division Champs

    2022-Coaching change and division champs

    2023-Hot seat?

    Yikes

  22. SOEbuc Says:

Idiots talk about the draft like he can not make contracts smooth as butter, as well.

  23. Mike C Says:

What is your opinion of the coach again Goatfarmer?

  24. TF Says:

Let’s just talk about JL. The job he has done has been way above average. Especially the last 5 years obviously. Look at the on-field production of his draft picks. Way above the league GM bar. He is in the Top 3rd in draft production when compared to the rest of the GMs league. His “competition”. So thanks Joe for pointing that out. And JL deserves ALL the credit for miraculously, in the middle of his roster build mind you, one that he had been planting seeds on, changed gears 180 degrees and acquired Brady and a SB title. He manipulated the cap and got us our SB title. So he has EARNED a couple more years.

All that being said, the last 3 years have been a big stray from what he was building. Now is where the fun begins and we get to see and truly judge how JL does in the aspect of the Draft. We have seen a couple signs with some of his picks but now is where he returns to being a football GM instead of a Basketball GM manipulating the salary cap and building a short term, chase a ring roster. So in my mind he gets an A+ for free agent acquisitions, cap management i.e Lombardi Trophy and and “I” for incompete in his draft pick areas of responsibility. JL is back on the clock. Looking forward to next week.

  25. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

JL does little to nothing to work out the Cap-that is all Mike Greenberg and Licht has said so in interview, so stop giving Licht any Cred for making the cap work.

  26. Letsbucinggo Says:

Agree with Jimbo, it scares the hell out of me hes going to use another second day pick on a kicker. One can say the punter he drafted was good. But the truth of the matter the highest rated rookie punter was an undrafted free agent imagine that.

    Glad you asked.

Bloweszo would make sure that the Steelers of the 1970s never made the playoffs. Besides being in over his head, at least he is uninspiring to his players. To be fair, he does make sure the secondary don’t know their assignments in pass coverage.

Your new head coach for 2024? Maybe Brian Flores. Bloweszo in 2024? Maybe he’ll team up with Roger Penrose to explain what happens to the universe at the end of time.

  28. Allbuccedup Says:

I saw something rather humors yesterday Walter Camp footballs mock draft in 2024 has the Bucs with the #1 pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

  29. Cobraboy Says:

Well, if you do a crap job drafting and they all play a lot of snaps, you’ll have a crap record.

  30. Allbuccedup Says:

Need a couple more Tyrons, Hall and Goedeke to set the team back for years to come NOT!

  31. TF Says:

JL financially fit every key component of the SB winning team and built a championship roster. All those rental players. Every single one. So YES he deserves 100% of the credit for leading the front office “team” of Spytek, and Greenberg etc. building SB roster. SuperBowl1976 to say he deserves no credit is quit possibly the most stubborn incorrect statement you have ever said in this forum. It’s like a head coach giving credit in an interview to an assistant. WHO CARES about that statement. He was being humble and acknowledging a key member of his front office. Sounds like personal opinion and dislike of Licht. We have had only TWO SB championships in your million years of being a Bucs fan. He is responsible for half. The fact of the matter is, like the article stated, we have a current roster built around our draft picks and in ADDITION, unlike those teams near the top, we have a very recent SB trophy. So YES again, Licht and his “team” deserves a chance to build a roster the correct way. But hey I have only been a Bucs Fan since “1979” so I cant hold a candle to your all knowing Bucs knowledge.

FYI THE GENERAL MANAGER IN 2002 ( OUR 1ST SUPER BOWL WIN WAS THE SON OF THE LATE,GREAT HEAD COACH “GEORGE ALLEN” ,WHOSE NAME HAPPENED TO BE “BRUCE ALLEN,” THE SAME GUY THAT RATTED OUT JON GRUDEN FOR PREDUDICE E-MAILS THAT ULTIMATELY BLACKBALLED GRUDEN’S ENTIRE COACHING CAREER & ACCOMPLISHMENTS & REMOVAL OF HIS NAME FROM THE BUC’S “RING OF HONOR”…

Nope. Bucs general manager in 2002 was Rich McKay.

  34. HA-HA-HA Says:

And it was McKay that built that team.
He had the power of an Owner while running the team while the Trust was looking for an someone to buy the team.
He is well respected around the League.

  35. HA-HA-HA Says:

After seeing Allen close up, I’m surprised he continued to get jobs, but not surprised how poorly his teams were.
OBTW, I followed his father’s coaching career, from Bears DC, to the Redskins . I was living in Central PA when their training camp was at Dickenson College.

  36. Delusional Intelligence Says:

Not sure I would read too much into the numbers overall. Unless, it also factors in injuries, coaching/coordinator changes, etc. But still good to see we are in the upper echelon.
