Anthony Nelson Gets A New Deal

March 15th, 2023

Will the Buccaneers let their most productive 2022 edge rusher walk out the door?

The answer is, “No!”

For those counting, Anthony Nelson had more tackles and sacks than Joe Tryon-Shoyinka last season. And Nelson had more sacks than Tyron-Shoyinka in 2021. Through that two-year span, Tryon-Shoyinka played 1,400 snaps on defense. Nelson had less than 1,000.

Nelson also is better against the run than Tryon-Shoyinka and now he’s off the free agent market. ESPN is reporting Nelson got a two-year deal to stick around.

The Bucs did the right thing with their fourth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Nelson is a solid young player that’s improving, and he’s the best edge-rush finisher on the team until Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett returns healthy.

Some said Jamel Dean couldn’t be lost because you don’t let good young cornerbacks you developed walk out of the building. Well, the same logic could apply to Nelson, who might cost half as much as Dean ($6 million annually.)

Nelson just turned 26, hasn’t missed a game in the past three seasons and made a few big plays late last season. He finishes quarterbacks consistently when they’re in his grasp; Tryon-Shoyinka lets too many QBs escape.

General manager Jason Licht is a trenches kind of guy, he says, so Joe is glad Licht put his money where his mouth is.

Just signed for 2 years. Nice!

  2. WhosOurQB Says:

    Need to sign Nelson asap

  3. WhosOurQB Says:

That aged well! Now what about David

  4. View from 132 Says:

Hey Joe, was wondering what the rules were for signing XFL and USFL players. Are they considered free agents? Might be a 3rd QB or something there… Dallas found a special teams ace last year.

  5. gbobucsfan Says:

not saying it’s incorrect, but who is reporting this?

  6. gbobucsfan Says:

    got it….Jeremy Fowler.

  7. Dooley Says:

You know, you can explain what Nelson does well or brings to the table w/o trying to rag on JTS at the same. It’s kind of corny tbh This/That Joe, borderline sassy/spicy

  8. Beej Says:

Is JTS on a 3 or 4 year deal? If there’s no improvement this year, hard to justify keeping him around

  9. Capt.Tim Says:

    Smart move

  10. SKBucsFan Says:

Great signing. Too bad it’s only for 2 years.

  11. gbobucsfan Says:

    2 years 11 mil….could be up to 13…solid

  12. JN Says:

Great news. Solid player. Certainly productive given the time he gets. VERY concerned about this position especially with Shaq Barrett coming off the injury. Shaq will be a shell of himself next season coming off that injury when he does return. Need Nelson. Need JTS to step up and finally make plays but dont see that happening. Hall was missing in action in ’22. Honestly, Bucs best pass rusher is White off the blitz or Vea just bull rushing. They need a better answer here… a much better answer.

  13. YucsBall Says:

Good Signing, hopefully he balls out and puts on a show

  14. WhosOurQB Says:

Major move for our pass rush, and if Shaq comes back strong we’ll be fine on D if we can draft DL, S, LB (Depending on David)

  15. WhosOurQB Says:

Hoping Hall and JTS are hitting that weight room a whole lot

  16. Capt.Tim Says:

Good idea. Need Carl Nassib in the fold also

  17. Rusty Shackleford Says:

The strip sack/forced fumble in the 4th quarter against Carolina arguably won us the division.

  18. Usfbuc Says:

Nelson is a good depth player so I think it’s a good signing.

  19. Bojim Says:

    Great!

  20. Joe in Michigan Says:

Good, but the Bucs still need to draft an explosive edge.

  21. Cobraboy Says:

    Enjoy winter in Buffalo, Lavonte!

  22. Jimbo Says:

Just keep racking up the credit card. Play today but pay tomorrow. Leitch is the worst GM in the league. The guy even traded up into the 2nd round to draft a kicker. Seriously! In a year or 2 the bucs will be stued for a decade as the next GM cleans up the mess.

  23. Caleb Says:

I don’t like this move at the price. The guy had a total of 14 pressures out of 283 pass rush snaps per PFF which is less than 5% pressure rate. While he was able to somehow convert these pressures into 6 sacks, this is a completely unsustainable percentage. To put it into perspective, if JTS had the same pressure/sack rate he would have had over 20 sacks. LOL. Should have looked for an upgrade.

  24. Jon Grudin Says:

    This!

    Capt.Tim Says:

Good idea. Need Carl Nassib in the fold also

  25. robert Says:

he’s the best of a bad lot. and shaq will never compare to his previous numbers.

We need to draft DE early…real early!

  26. MadMax Says:

JTS (aka chicken wing) is a wasted 1st rd pick. We should trade him for a fg kicker who can kick beyond 50 yards…. if we’re lucky

Anyways, good on keeping Nelson around

  27. Pewter Power Says:

JTS needs to pay someone to train him this offseason if he is really serious about making an impact in the NFL, a players second contract is usually a big motivator

Is JTS on a 3 or 4 year deal? If there’s no improvement this year, hard to justify keeping him around

JTS is on the 3rd year of his 4 year rookie contract all draft picks get a 4 year contract…..1st round picks have a 5th year team option.

As far as Nelson…..he is steady….like Gholston…a good 4th round pick….you need players like this on the team…..all cannot be superstars….

  29. WhosOurQB Says:

@Jimbo why so mad lol .. sheesh

  30. Goatfarmer Says:

Love Nelson. All he does is make plays when it counts, unlike old Geraldine McCoy, who was ridiculously hyped for that “first step” but completely disappeared in the 4th quarter of games.

Congrats to Nelson and Jason Licht.

Now sign the quarterback. And LVD.

  31. Dooley Says:

$8.2 for Baker. That’s 2 QBs one more viable competitor and we’re fnckin cookin!

  32. Voice of Truth Says:

Savings from Mason for Stinnie swap pays for Nelson

So far so good, now, how do we pay for LVD?

    MUST have him back

  33. The Tampa Bay Truth Says:

Looks like licht got fleeced again. Overpaying for his own mediocre talent.

  34. WhosOurQB Says:

    David >>>>>>>>>> Mayfield

  35. gotbbucs Says:

I’m all for getting some of these guys re-signed.

My question is this, isn’t throwing the same team out there year after year and expecting a different result the definition of roster building insanity? Nelson is a good football player, borderline starter I guess, but the overall talent on the team doesn’t improve when you aren’t churning the bottom/middle of the roster a little bit.
I understand money is tight, but these are all just safe, familiar signings. Warm and fuzzy feelings for all involved. Feels like a team content to lose while feeling comfortable in each other’s arms. Nobody looking over their shoulder to see if anybody else is coming for their job.

  36. CBWells Says:

This may very well be the most important signing of the offseason

  37. Elita Vita Says:

    Mayfield to be a Buccaneer!!!!!

  38. gbobucsfan Says:

I agree gotbbucs. What is the definition of insanity again?

  39. Rod Munch Says:

YES! The Bucs signed the guy who lost his starting QB job in Carolina, then got cut, and will be on his 4th team in the last 12-months!

The BUCS should be even better than last year now!

  40. MadMax Says:

Mayfield 1 yr deal worth up to 8.5 mill…im sure thats a lot of incentives. Im happy with it. He’ll give the qb room a nice jolt.

  41. NEfan Says:

    Ho Hum

  42. Dooley Says:

    @Gottbucs

Pat O’Connor is a free agent this season, last year while everybody was coming down from the rush of Brady unretiring our front office was replacing A LOT of our underneath talent with newer, younger faces. 2023 we’ll have positional battles at IDL, Nickel back, along with the bottom portion of the CB depth chart, Safety opposite of Winfield, TE, all across the OL, and depending on if we get David back ILB will also be a point of contention.

  43. Mike Johnson Says:

Decent re-signing. Now how about getting an explosive DE with one of our first 3 picks? Look guys, Your defense has got to be able to stop somebody and get off the field If not, you in big kimchi.

  44. Steven007 Says:

Munch, or you could also say that they signed the former number one overall pick who actually had a winning season and won a playoff game and ended last year on a high note with the Rams with no prep leading them to an impressive win. I suppose either narrative works. The fact remains he’s the quarterback of the team now. Or at least we’ll be competing for that privilege.

  45. Canabuc Says:

I have very mixed feelings about signing Baker Mayfield. On one hand, I wanted to let Trask see what he can do, and either would perform well, and maybe we do have a future franchise quarterback, or perhaps he would do terribly, and that would leave us with a very good chance at a high draft pick an a franchise quarterback in the draft.

Yes, we can look at some statistics of Baker mayfield over the last two years, and it has not been pretty. However, if you look closer at the statistics, you will see that he played injured for a significant part of that time. Last year he also was playing with arguably one offensive weapon at receiver. He actually did pretty decent when he went over to the Rams with no time to learn a playbook and no weapons given that their top receiver was already out for the season.

He is only 2+ seasons removed from an 11 and five record and taking the Browns to their first playoff in a very long time. He was a number one pick overall so there must’ve been some talent there. Finally, the Seahawks last year were actually looking to try to sign him as they thought he would probably be the right fit similar to how Russell Wilson play.

While it is not the move, I would have done, he is now a buccaneer, and I am a fan, and I will root for them to either do really well or really poorly and nothing in between lol. That being said, perhaps he is still in the prime of his career and in the right setting and with the right coaching, he may actually end up being much better than his last two seasons would indicate.

  46. MadMax Says:

Now, GO DRAFT WASHINGTON, HOOKER, AND ACHANE!!!!

  47. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Baker Mayfield just signed with the Bucs. Meh.

  48. Steven007 Says:

    Tampa Baker. Haha

  49. Rod Munch Says:

Well, if Baker’s deal is legit just $4m and maxes out at $8.5m, I hate the signing a lot less. I still think he’s incredibly overrated, but that’s not expensive at all for a QB in 2023 who has a chance to start. It’s only a 1-year deal so I assume he’s taking it knowing he can easily beat out Trask – and if he can’t, he should retire.

But for the Bucs… why bother? Mayfield might get you an extra win or two, but that only means you’re picking 7th or 8th instead of perhaps 1st overall. Bowles was handed a SB team, literally the offseason favorite to go to the SB last year for the NFC, and that dummy finished 8-10 with a HOF QB and a team with a lot more talent than what will be on the field this season. YES, he was hampered by a complete idiot at OC, but do we really think a guy with no experience who was stuck on the depth chart of the Seahawks coaching staff is going to come in and turn things around with Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask? LOL!

A loser move for the team. Instead of using 2023 to clean up the cap and get ready for next year – the team has spent money to field a bad team and is only about $20m under the cap for 2024 (although it should go up by maybe $60m, but also everything will get more expensive because of that).

  50. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Hopefully we can add A’Shawn Robinson & Taven Bryan to the defensive line.

    A’ Shawn Robinson – Height: 6’4” | Weight: 330 | Age: 28
    Taven Bryan – Height: 6’5” | Weight: 291 | Age: 27

  51. Steven007 Says:

it makes me feel kind of queasy knowing that the lesser Bucs blog reported this far sooner than JBF. No more day drinking Joe.

  52. Steven007 Says:

Luv, A’Shawn is a tremendous run defender.

  53. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    SteveO

    Bigtime!

  54. MadMax Says:

@Tampa Baker ROFLMAO…thats gonna be stolen Steve lol

  55. Steven007 Says:

Munch, to answer why bother, the current coaching staff knows it has to win to survive. That’s why bother. Of course for fans who want us to tank and get the earliest pick possible, that’s bad luck for you. Clearly the brain trust wants to remain as competitive as possible. End of story.

  56. Pryda…Sec147 Says:

Can this man develop more and turn into a 10 sack guy idk I’ll be watching.

  57. MadMax Says:

Yo Luv, whats your thoughts on drafting Steve Avila late 2nd/early 3rd?

33″ arms since thats important, 6’3 330, can play both guard spots, Center and RT….didnt allow a single sack in his last year at TCU, 515 snaps.

  58. Rod Munch Says:

Steven007 – Mayfield was the QB of a running team that had a good defense, where he was just asked not to lose games, and in one of his 5 years he did that. In the other 4 years, he was not a good QB, and in the last two seasons, he’s been one of the worst QBs in the NFL.

If you take Mayfield’s stats over the last two years, pro-rate those out to 17 games, you get the following numbers:

    Per 17 games – 3382 yards, 60% comp, 18 TDs, 14 INTs.

Even worse, his QBR for the last two years is 35.1 and 24.5 – which is truly terrible. QBR, unlike the old QBr, is actually a useful stat, that takes the game situation into account, and when you’re talking about starters in the 30s, and even the 20s, that’s really really really bad.

Yes, he had one good quarter vs a really bad Raiders defense last year in prime time, and congrats to him for being able to turn that into getting a deal worth $8.5m. With that one quarter of football, he’d be signing a Gabbert like deal.

With all that said, I’m glad he didn’t get the money I was expecting, so in that regard, I guess the Bucs did better than expected. But it’s still a very very very bad deal for the team, long term, since that higher draft pick is way more valuable than winning 5 games as opposed to 3 games.

  59. UKBuccaneer Says:

If you wanna tank for the #1 pick, you’re not a fan. The game is about winning, not wishing on next years draft.

  60. Cobraboy Says:

I never ever thought Baker Mayfield would wear pewter and red.

    Evah.

  61. Mike Johnson Says:

ESPN is reporting..BUCS TO SIGN MAYFIELD. God help us.

  62. Steven007 Says:

Munch, I’m not disputing any of that. It is what it is. Clearly they think he gives him the best chance to win this season, and aside from what anybody else wants to do they obviously want to win this season. Still a weak division. Still have weapons. And yes, they got him for a song as far as QB salaries goes. So aside from the tanking narrative, he’s about as good as anybody we were going to get given the salary constraints. And possibly better. Clearly the brain trust thinks so. Literally. 😉

  63. Nicky666 Says:

Really happy with this move! Nelson got that elite wingspan so he can actually get a hold of and tackle the QB while JTS always seems to lose his grip right when he’s about to make the play. Kinda bummed we went and got Mayfield I would have rather gone with a cheaper option (Gabbert). I feel like the Bucs should just put Trask out there and see what they have – either he sucks and we wasted a 2nd round pick or he’s the real deal and we can build around the kid. Either way that seems like the most win – win scenario. If he sucks then we can look forward to Williams or Maye – but if he balls out then we have a good core to build around and can look to the future with a plan in place. Mayfield is good to the extent that he would probably win us enough games to keep us out of a top pick – but not good enough to help us make the playoffs. I’d rather roll with Trask and save the Mayfield money for LVD so he can retire a buc. Just my 2 cents! As always GO BUCS!!! 🙂

  64. larrd Says:

It would probably be more fair to compare Nelson’s first two years to Tryon-Shoyinka’s. If I recall, JTS didn’t have that much experience in college, either. Maybe he’ll be better in his fourth year, like Nelson.

Either way, they need another pass rusher and about five DLs. What do they have beyond Vita Vea and Hall? I can’t think of anybody!

  65. MadMax Says:

And the stock market is tanking….dow 29000 something here we come (or less) Im glad I got out in feb. Took my +40.8 percent one year gain and i’ll watch from the sidelines….its getting ugly.

  66. MadMax Says:

@larrd, hopefully Hicks back for one more year at a decent price.

  67. JD Still Says:

Letting David go would be tantamount to kicking your old faithful guard dog out on the street and getting a young pup to replace him , You just don’t do it! , David deserves better , if he wants to retire a Buc he has earned the right to do so! It’s alright to get a young pup but you need the old dog to show him how to act and what to do!

  68. Pickgrin Says:

Joes asleep at the wheel? Hot lunch date?

Schefter’s original tweet that the Bucs have signed Mayfield to a 1 year $4M deal (worth up to $8.5M) was almost an hour ago…..

  69. Tye Says:

Someone might ought to check on Joe… Everyone else breaking the news before this site…

  70. MadMax Says:

The Joes usually post late night/early am, so I assume they’re sleeping like a 3rd shifter.

  71. Goatfarmer Says:

    UKBuc – spot on.

Teams that tank, suck, perennially. The teams that are always good (Pats, Steelers, even Cowboys) never tank.

All these geniuses yelling to trade every good player away and get the top draft choices don’t understand how a winning organization actually functions.

The draft is a crap shoot, 50/50 at the top and declining from there. Demonstrated performance is what really counts.

  72. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Well Famous Jaymiss just resigned for $8M so there is that!

  73. HC Grover Says:

Good now get rid of Plan 9.

  74. Letsbucinggo Says:

    No brainer!

  75. Hammerhead Says:

Joe, the Mayfield story hit the wires about an hour ago. It’s not like you to get scooped this badly.

  76. MadMax Says:

@Tye, they usually post stuff late night/early am….probably sleeping.

  77. J Says:

    Spot on @Hammerhead.

  78. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    Joe hello Baker Mayfield???!?!?

  79. Tye Says:

SERIOUSLY, Joe… Man are you ok?

  80. Ds Says:

    Tank on

  81. Steven007 Says:

I think this is Joe taking his advertisers (aka: a brewery) way too seriously. Like I said earlier, no more day drinking Joe!

  82. Defense Rules Says:

Tye … ‘Someone might ought to check on Joe… Everyone else breaking the news before this site…’

Didn’t Joe say yesterday or the day before that he was heading to Vegas. Hey, cut him some slack; he’s a couple hours behind us. And besides, you can’t leave the 1-armed bandit while you’re behind. Double down Joe, double down.

  83. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

$4M with the rest of the $8.5M in incentives For Baker. Folks, the Aint’s just resigned Jaymiss for $8M straight up. I think Licht is KILLING it!

  84. Mike S Says:

Ah an incentive deal – OK that makes sense.

  85. Steven007 Says:

Scotty, those details are very instructive and we’re announced with the deal. This is a very good deal considering what we were looking for, what we had to choose from, and the budget.

  86. Mike S Says:

We need to send some one to perform a wellness check on Joe. This is an epic fail not to post on the Baker deal.

  87. Iron-Wombat Says:

Joe must of got a 2 day head start on Saint Paddy’s day.

  88. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @ MadMax

I’ve got LUV for the kid, but I believe he will be selected in the middle of the 2nd round. He significantly boosted his stock with an impressive performance at the Senior Bowl.

    Your thoughts on:
    • G Cedric Paillant
    • DE Tavis Robinson

  89. Steven007 Says:

Defense, nice defense of Joe as it were! Though you would think that given the free agent period and rumors that they might have been a bit more on top of this. No worries, we all obviously already know. His breakdown whenever it comes will now be somewhat redundant however.

  90. MadMax Says:

    ^ Yeah Im happy with it….and I guess thats what he’s worth…

I said offer him 4-6 so if we make the playoffs and he plays very well, it’ll be 6-8.

    Good job Mr. Licht!

  91. MadMax Says:

@Luv, yeah, after further research he might have to be our first 2nd.

    Then Washington, Hooker and Achane.

  92. Tucker Says:

Baker Mayfield to the bucs wow gonna be a wild season lol

  93. D-Rok Says:

    Guys,

Yesterday one of the Joe’s said he couldn’t drink beer because he was flying to Las Vegas, if I remember correctly. They will post the Mayfield news soon.

JBF isn’t always the first with breaking news. Patience, Grasshoppers! 😉

  94. Bill in Seminole Says:

…Anthony Nelson had more tackles and sacks than Joe Tryon-Shoyinka last season…

Just about every NFL defensive player had more sacks/tackles than Joe Tryon-Shoyinka last season. My grandmother had more tackles/sacks than JTS.

  95. HC Grover Says:

Before there were “Edge Rushers”. Teams had DE’s. Big ones.

  96. Brian Says:

BUCS signed Mayfield! Now let draft Hendon Hooker!

  97. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    MadMax

    Cold Combination

    LT Tristan Wirfs 6’7
    RT Dawand Jones 6’8

  98. Ramblin_Man Says:

Looks like the drunks are taking an extended lunch break today haha

  99. Walter Says:

Bowles better get fired after this nightmare season is over.

  100. MadMax Says:

Luv, Cedrice Paillant, a former wrestler in school (they always make great O line players).

If we dont lose our late rounders in trades, he’ll be good for one of our 6th.

Tavius Robinson looks like an unknown probably going 5th rd….maybe 6th.

    Nice finds bro

  101. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Well, we just signed Baker.

  102. MadMax Says:

    And Dawand Jones is massive….lol

  103. Oxycondoms Says:

$4.5 mil kind of tells you what rest of league thought of him. Heres hoping canales can do with him what he did with geno

  104. Brandon Says:

So I’m four for four in our signings.

    Predicted

    Dean
    Stinnie
    Nelson

And that’s all I have. Though i do see Dee Delaney receiving and signing his ERFA contract.

I have David on the fence. If he is willing to take less. Not predicting him either way.

Nailed the Baker Mayfield signing as well.

One year $8.5m. I had been thinking $8m but when Heinicke got $10m per season I started having doubts he would be signed at all. I think we’re pretty much done with the first phase of free agency. Edwards, SMB, will walk. If David can accept a lot less, he could still be back.

  105. Mike Johnson Says:

Mayfield is signing with our Bucs for 8.5 per year. Bottom feeders Unite!

  106. Rod Munch Says:

    LUVMYBUCS Says:
    LT Tristan Wirfs 6’7
    RT Dawand Jones 6’8

    ——

Not a good combo when your new QB is 5′ 9″.

  107. MadMax Says:

^ he’s 6’1 Rod lol or maybe 6’0 if its overstated

  108. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Well, Mayfield never had the benefit of a consistent coaching staff…and he probably won’t get that here either.

  109. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I hope they only have to pay him IF he makes the final roster.

  110. Marine Buc Says:

If Kyle Trask can’t beat out Baker Mayfield it will be a clear signal that we wasted a second round pick…

If Trask ends up as the starter at least the Bucs will have a somewhat competent backup QB.

    Win/win.

Plus – it’s not like the Bucs are breaking the bank and at very least JOE will shut up about the ridiculous Lamar Jackson BS…

    LOL!!!!

  111. Ugotrobbed Says:

Baker did make some pretty funny commercials!!

  112. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @ MadMax

    Thx Bruh, solid developmental prospects.

  113. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @ Munch

    Po’ little fella lol

  114. Buc4evr Says:

Geez, the Bucs are getting killed in sports circles for signing Baker. We are going to be the laughing stock of the NFL this year. Might as well re-sign AB. It’s going to be a circus.

  115. D-Rome Says:

I clicked on the Anthony Nelson story just to get updates on Baker Mayfield.

  116. Marine Buc Says:

Some of you guys are being ridiculous…

RELAX… It’s a one year $4M dollar deal. If he reaches any incentives it could go to $8M but the incentives won’t be paid until next year.

I don’t understand – who in the heck did you honestly think the Bucs were gonna get?

    Be real!!!

We were never gonna get A. Rodgers or D. Carr or G. Smith ot Jimmy G. or Lamar “I’m too injured to play in the playoofs” Jackson…

    That was all delusional BS.

    Wake up people please.

  117. Dooley Says:

    David is comin’ back

  118. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Sounds like Lavonte David’s back!

  119. Steven007 Says:

    1 year deal for Lavonte.

  120. A Bucs Fan Says:

LVD is back. One year for seven million.

  121. Tye Says:

Yep… Lavonte resigned to 1 year deal

  122. BrianBucs Says:

Joe must be paying a personal visit to Johnny Football to see if he will come to Tampa.
Too bad he apparently missed the Baker Mayfield news

  123. Marine Buc Says:

    @ A Bucs fan

    Nice!!!!

Wow. Going into this off season I looked at our free agents and the only ones I wanted back were Dean, LVD and Nelson.

I didn’t think Dean was possible but he took a team friendly deal and wanted to stay in Tampa.

I was 50/50 on LVD and Nelson.

So i am very pleased with what the Bucs have been able to accomplish so far with very little cap space.

Cudos the Jason Licht and Mike Greenberg.

    Marine, I second that sentiment.

    @ Marine Bucs

As I stated 2 weeks ago.

At the beginning of free agency in 2021, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had approximately $11.5 million in salary cap space.

2021 offseason and their reported contract amounts:

    • Edge rusher Shaq Barrett: Re-signed on a four-year, $72 million contract, with $36 million guaranteed.

    • Linebacker Lavonte David: Re-signed on a two-year, $25 million contract, with $20 million guaranteed.

    • Tight end Rob Gronkowski: Re-signed on a one-year, $10 million contract, with $8 million guaranteed.

    • Running back Leonard Fournette: Re-signed on a one-year, $3.25 million contract, with $2 million guaranteed.

    • Kicker Ryan Succop: Re-signed on a three-year, $12 million contract, with $6.25 million guaranteed.

= 122.25 million in contracts, with 72.25 million in guarantees

  126. Marine Buc Says:

    @ LUV

All three – LVD, Dean and Nelson signed team frieldly deals to stay.

That is a very good sign…

Players still want to play here in Tampa – regardless of what Tom Brady is doing.

Who needs the Brady EFFECT when you have – great weather, low taxes and amazing beaches?

  127. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @ Marine Bucs

    Amen!

  128. Bucsfanman Says:

    Nelson is a solid signing.

For those banging on Mayfield, who the heck out there was THAT much better?! Give me a break.

  129. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @ Marine Bucs

As you know there’s still a few more moves we can make.

    Release
    • Ryan Succop

    Extend
    • Mike Evans

    Trade or Extend
    • Devin White

Potential an additional $20+M in cap space + Draft picks

  130. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @ Bucsfanman

    Hope all is well bruh

  131. Jimmy G STH Says:

Good points, Joe, about comparing Nelson and JTS, just didn’t go far enough. JTS should be dealt to the highest bidder. Went to most of the games and JTS is ineffective. Only if O lineman blows assignment and our guy has a straight line to the QB is he effective. Too small.

  132. MadMax Says:

@Luv, or trade JTS for fg kicker who kicks past 50….im not kidding

  133. Marine Buc Says:

    @ LUV

Don’t forget the 51 man rule.

The Cap only counts for the top 51 paid players. Right now there are 10 players at the bottom who account $750K against the cap.

So – Every player we sign comes with a $750K discount. Because one of those $750K players will be falling off the top 51 as another higher paid player is added.

A player that costs $1.5M will only cost $750K against the cap.

We just signed Dee Delaney. Perfect example.

  134. Marine Buc Says:

    @ LUC

Nick Leverett really only counted @ $250K against the cap…

  135. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @ MadMax

    Lol I know your not.

As you know some individuals require more time than others to achieve their potential.

Take, for instance, the remarkable story of Jason Gildon, who despite not being a first-round draft pick, displayed a remarkable work ethic and persevered until he turned his fortunes around. We can draw parallels to JTS’s situation, and with similar determination and dedication, he too will undoubtedly shine.

  136. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @ Marine Buc

    Good Point!

  137. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @ Mad Max

    What about drafting Jack Moody?

  138. Dooley Says:

    ^^^^
    YUP! Michigans’ Kicker

  139. WhosOurQB Says:

Loving no article on Baker Mayfield Signing lolol .. well played Joes!

  140. WhosOurQB Says:

    Baker who?????

  141. D-Rome Says:

Loving no article on Baker Mayfield Signing lolol .. well played Joes!

Why? Many people (myself included) come here first for Bucs news and opinions. I shouldn’t have to go anywhere else to get an honest take on the signing.

  142. Bucsfanman Says:

LUV- What’s good my brother?! Glad to be back talking all things Bucs again!

  143. Rand Says:

If Kyle Trask can’t beat out Baker Mayfield it will be a clear signal that we wasted a second round pick…

I’ve got close to 8.5 million reasons why Mayfield will be gifted the start and it has nothing to do with Trask’s ability.

  144. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @ Bucsfanman

    Ain’t that the truth!

    Everybody good brotha.

  145. MadMax Says:

    Bingo….Jake Moody!

    We got this….

What did we say a while back Luv? We’d build a Superbowl team if it was us making the calls? Then they started listening and TB fell our way after I started calling for him…. and the rest was history!!! Hahaha, i still laugh about that. Seems like when they listen to us, we do good, when they dont, not so much.

  146. MadMax Says:

    So we need two 2nd’s, two 3rds and a 5th for Moody….

  147. MadMax Says:

    Avila
    Washington
    Hooker
    Achane
    Moody

I aint gonna lie, if that is possible, this draft will be knocked out of the park!
