“Too Early To Tell”
February 28th, 2023Injury update from the NFL Scouting Combine.
Joe asked general manager Jason Licht to update the condition of Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett, and if Barrett’s recovery status after an Achilles tear in October might affect the Bucs’ draft.
Licht was non-committal and said he can’t say if Shaq will be ready for training camp.
“He’s where he’s supposed to be,” Licht said of Shaq. “It’s too early to tell where he’s at. Other than he’s where he’s supposed to be right now.”
After the regular season, Shaq said in the Bucs locker room that he believed he could be ready for camp.

Jason Licht … “He’s where he’s supposed to be. It’s too early to tell where he’s at. Other than he’s where he’s supposed to be right now.”
Is it just me, or does that make zero sense.

Cmon Shaq. Get with Jensen and figure out how he did the impossible. I know different injury and all, but we sure need you.

@ DR
It’s called doublespeak… Salesmen use it when they are lying to you.
LOL!
Hey driver are we lost?
No we are right where we are supposed to be but I don’t really know where that is – but we are where we are supposed to be… I guess.
It doesn’t sound good to me.

I don’t think he’ll be ready for camp.

Cutting him this yr will be a massive cap hit

I’m quite worried about Shaq. His production had been falling up before this, and the reason he was such a great story was that he came out of nowhere to have that 20-sack season. However, he came out of nowhere because he wasn’t all that physically gifted. Being older and having a major injury like this, I think it’s very likely he loses half a step, and I don’t think he has a half-step to lose. With that said, these major injuries aren’t that major anymore, so hopefully I’m worried about nothing and he’s playing at full speed again.

I think this year the bucs just need to go ahead and take the cap hits this year and use this opportunity to get younger. It asking alot from Bowles and Licht to draft players that can make an impact from day 1 but I think you need to hit on your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks. As for Shaq you can move off his contract after this year but if you cut him post June 1 it will save 14 million. I think the biggest issue for the bucs is to find ways to get rid of contracts that are about to hit the void years. I wouldn’t rule out trading Mike Evans since he is in the last year of his contract because there is no way the bucs are going to pay 3 receivers.

“We can’t really tell where he’s at, but he’s right where he should be at.”
That could go into the dictionary as an example after the definition of ‘coach speak’
