“More Than One NFC South Team Involved”

February 5th, 2023

“Mr. Glazer. It’s just a conversation.”

Joe thinks the Derek Carr trade talk is a little silly for multiple reasons, but Joe can’t ignore a big-name NFL reporter chatting about the Raiders talking to teams about trading their quarterback with “more than one NFC South team involved.”

Albert Breer, the longtime NFL insider who is now top dog at Sports Illustrated, was on FS1 on Friday and was asked about Carr.

Breer said he was at Senior Bowl practices last week sniffing around and said the Raiders’ general manager was there talking to clubs about a Carr trade with “more than one NFC South team involved.” And he suspects the Jets will be next when it comes to teams discussing a move for the three-time Pro Bowl QB.

Carr, however, is owed $40 million or so by the Raiders in 10 days. If Las Vegas cuts Carr before then, then the team is off the hook for the money and Carr becomes a free agent about a month prior to other pending free agent QBs.

That extra time should be a tremendous advantage to his job-seeking effort. Carr also has a no-trade clause, so Joe’s not sure why Carr would waive it.

Regardless, Carr could waive the no-trade clause, and the Raiders could absorb some cash in Carr’s remaining contract to get a deal done.

Was Breer referring to the Bucs as one of those NFC South teams?

It’s actually impossible to know considering every NFC South team appears to need a starting quarterback.

Atlanta has the most cap room by far. The Panthers have a QB guru at head coach. The Bucs and Saints have defensive guru head coaches and massive salary cap debt. Only one game separated all four teams in the win column this season.

Joe suspects Carr might prefer Atlanta and its young targets and elite running game (4.9 yards per carry) over the Bucs or any other NFC South club.

The Bucs have a defensive hula dancer for a head coach. Nothing about him says guru.

  2. Rand Says:

Let Atlanta have the Raiders failed experiment. We have a guy on our roster we have no ideal about who could turn out to be the next Josh Allen

  3. SB~LV Says:

    Do we have a GM?
Why has not Jason Licht addressed the past season and the State of the Buccaneers?

  4. Rayjay1122 Says:

I have no issues with Trask, his biggest problem while at UF was the Gator defense was atrocious. My biggest issue with him as the BUCS potential starting QB is with those coaching err, those getting paid to coach.

  5. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Rand, that is hilarious.

  6. ATLBuc Says:

Forget Carr. We have a Trask!!! Blaine Gabbert is probably as good as Carr and Kyle Trask is probably better than both of them.

  7. lambchop Says:

Carr will have huge expectations thrust onto him coming after Tom Brady and a Super Bowl. I don’t see too manyaverage QBs wanting to come into that kind of scenario.

The Bucs, if healthy, are a QB, OC, and salary cap jugglery away from being Playoff contenders.

The OC needs to be someone with a strong personality and work ethic to hold his own and let Bowles only focus on the defense. You can’t have a situation where Bowles isn’t confident in the OC and he’s giving suggestions about running the ball more and creating friction with coaches.

  8. Nate Says:

    Rodgers or bust

  9. lambchop Says:

    @ATLBuc,

That’s why Trask was 3rd in the depth chart? We’re trying to hide this hidden gem from the world?

  10. Dooley Says:

New Orleans just got some picks for Sean Peyton, it’d be a great flip to invest that in a trade for Carr, but they’re also still in cap purgatory just like us. It’s a matter of Carr being cut over being traded which, the latter comes with that contract attached to it. Carr gets cut, it’s basically his choice where to go, could be my Bucs bias, but Mike, Chris, Lenny, ‘Chaad, Gage, & Otton could help move him closer to us, than those damn dirty Aints.

  11. lambchop Says:

The Bucs have to get Todd Monken as the OC. He knows how to scheme Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. He’ll use Cade Otten and even Scotty Miller if we bring him back for his speed.

Monken is a no nonsense guy and will be the kind of guy Todd Bowles can just hand the offense over to and not worry about anything but defense. I think Monken fits in with our new Brady-era culture now more than he did the last time he was here. I think the players on offense will welcome that hard-nosed coaching now that they know what it takes to win.

Go get him and start focusing on the salary cap and QB situation.

BTW, the Bucs will probably move on from Playoff Lenny. I don’t think he will gel with Todd Monken anyway, cuz Monken is not going to soothe and smooth over Lenny’s insecurities.

  12. The Anomaly Says:

all you suckers that bought 2 years of season tix…lolololol

  13. The Anomaly Says:

monken would have already been hired…smdh

    BA’s Red Pen

You’re going to look like a fool if Trask goes on and has a brilliant career. Especially if it’s not with the Buc’s. Not like it would matter, you’d never ever own up to it anyway. That’s what people who hide behind anonymous names do. Hit and run.

  15. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

Time to give Trask the ball!

  16. xdptoddx Says:

Rumors are it’s the Saints, but it makes sense for Carr to consider Carolina since Frank Reich is there. At least he would know who is running the offense as opposed to Tampa where it almost seems like nobody wants the job.

    @ATLBuc,

    ________

That makes the assumption that this staff knows how to evaluate talent.
Darden and Goedeke were favored over Thomkins and Leverett not long ago.

  18. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Licht is once again exposed as the dufus GM now that Brady is gone. Monken would be ideal and we could get Mayfield on the cheap, but I doubt Monken would come back to the team that fired him and to this horrendous situation. No need to overspend on Carr or Garapolo.

  19. BucGuy Says:

As far as Derek Carr goes, why would we want that MFer???

  20. HC Grover Says:

I predict Gabbert. He knows the Coach Bozo Game Plans. Carr could never learn it. It is way too simple.

  21. Buccos Says:

I would re-sign Gabbert and let him and Trask duel it out. Competition makes you stronger. Don’t gift the job to anyone

  22. Buccos Says:

Unless there is some way to get Karen Rodgers. But that seems highly unlikely. If Licht can pull that off he goes straight into the ROH

  23. Letsbucinggo Says:

Please no whiners like Rodgers or pouty face Mayfield.

  24. Marine Buc Says:

If the Bucs had 8-10 contracts to restructure and Brady allows the Bucs to push $24M of cap into next year I would say there might be a chance to sign a high priced QB like Rodgers, Carr or Jackson…

But the reality is we only have 4-5 contracts that we are able to restructure.

    – Godwin
    – Evans
    – Vea
    – White
    – Davis

The rest are too old, injured or not worthy of a new contract:

    – Jenson
    – Barrett
    – D. Smith
    – Fournette

Basically – we are lucky if we could afford:

    – Brissett/Baker-Mayfield ($4-5M)
    – Gabbert ($2M)
    – Trask ($1.5M)

  25. Rod Munch Says:

Why would anyone want a loser like Carr? You really think the Raiders are just going to give away a good player? Of course not. They’re dumping a guy who stinks, who plays to inflate his stats and nothing more. There’s a reason he’s universally hated. He’s a loser, and you need to watch more than highlights and look at his box score to know why the Raiders are so eager to dump him.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    The Anomaly Says
“monken would have already been hired…”

Unless he is their fallback plan.

I suspect that they are interested in one of the coaches on the Chiefs or Eagles. Wouldn’t mind the QB Coach for the Chiefs, especially if we are going young.

But…if it is Monken, I can live with that for a year…though I suspect he couldn’t.

Maybe we’ll get lucky…maybe Licht hasn’t made a move because they want one of the SB OCs to be head coach. Eric Bieniemy?

We could be surprised and the Glazers want to fire Bowles…but Licht wants to wait until they know they have a quality replacement.

Give Eric Bieniemy a 5 year deal with 3 guaranteed. Make sure he has time to make things right.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Rod Munch Says
“Why would anyone want a loser like Carr? You really think the Raiders are just going to give away a good player? Of course not. They’re dumping a guy who stinks, who plays to inflate his stats and nothing more.”

Saying he inflates his stats is just a way to excuse how good he is. No one can win with the Raiders. That place is a mess from the ownership on down.

Here’s what I think: I don’t believe Carr is as good as Tom Brady. That just is not going to be the case. There are maybe 3 QBs in the NFL who may one day come close.

But…waaay back when Drew Brees left the chargers, I wanted him in Tampa. Here’s the thing…the genius armchair GMs here said he was washed up, that his stats were padded and that his arm didn’t have enough left.

Yeah…they actually said those things. Of course, they all deny it now…afterall, he proved them wrong. All it took was a change of scenery.

So…here we are…Derek Carr is hitting the streets. This time around I do not think he is as good as Brees (of course)…but…his picks are low, his completions are good, and he is mobile.

His fumbles are high…but let’s think that through…a QB with high fumbles is usually one with such bad protection that he has to run for his life. Hence, the Raiders OL.

He wasn’t blameless…but a fresh start is probably exactly what he needs…and if an NFL South team gets him, that will likely be the division leader for a few years…barring a miracle pick in the draft or another All-in signing.

So far as his attitude…if I played for the Raiders, I’d have one too.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

But no…I DO NOT think we should trade for him. I don’t think we are able to trade for him because of the cap.

  29. Pewter Power Says:

If he is smart only saints and Bucs are a quarterback away from being a playoff team. The only reason the nfc sucked so bad is Byron Leftwich sucked. We should have run away with this division

  30. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Fancy Man,

Inflated stats? Something you’re very familiar with.
Carr sounds an awful lot like JayMiss……. minus all the INTs.
But JayMiss is great in your opinion and Carr is garbage.
    Never mind the facts.

  31. BucsfanFred Says:

Carr is a 40 million a year QB who’s only worth about 10 mil.
We are in cap hell right now. We can’t afford him.

Baker Mayfield may come cheap and he has lots to prove. Jacoby Brissett would come cheap too. Either of those guys and probably many more would be just as good or better than Carr. I think that guy who backed up Dak would be better than Carr if he’s available. Don’t remember his name

  32. Sinking Ship Says:

We have no $. The teams are the falcons and the panthers.

Let’s rebuild. We ain’t winnin scrapple anytime soon

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Marine Buc Says
“If the Bucs had 8-10 contracts to restructure and Brady allows the Bucs to push $24M of cap into next year I would say there might be a chance to sign a high priced QB like Rodgers, Carr or Jackson…

But the reality is we only have 4-5 contracts that we are able to restructure.

    – Godwin Worth keeping
    – Evans Trade away…best value in trades
    – Vea Probably will restructure
    – White Restructure
    – Davis Restructure

The rest are too old, injured or not worthy of a new contract:

    – Jenson Restructure to add a year…Good Centers are really hard to find, and he is the best there is.He’s not too old (yet).
    – Barrett Release or Trade, whichever is best.
    – D. Smith Retructure…the guy is one of our healthiest. This is the first year he’s had a serious issue…and with so many backups on the OL, his attention was divided. He’s fine.
    – Fournette Release or trade…White is good enough, and I’m sure we can add more cheaper

    – – – – –
Remember, Tom Brady’s retirement is not official until he turns in the paperwork. So his salary still needs to come out of the $55m. As soon as he does, that $55 will drop by $35m…and that leaves $20m. Easily doable.

  34. Brian Says:

    Get that Tennessee QB

  35. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Off Topic a bit, but if we manage to get Monken away from Georgia it will be a freaking miracle!
Georgia is a dynasty, and if they win another national championship, which is very likely, Monken can have his choice of HEAD Coaching positions.
Plus, he makes 2 million a year now!
I don’t feel it is realistic to get Monken, especially when we have no proven QB, and are in salary cap hell.
Greg Roman is out of a job, and sure knows all about a power running game!

  36. The Anomaly Says:

Who is going to trade for Barrett?

    NO ONE

That contract is a huge anchor. Nice job, Jason.

  37. The Anomaly Says:

@Bonzai…you are wrong…the money owed to Brady is from restructuring…it’s dead money. We might be able to split it between 2 seasons…but that $35 mill IS NOT COMING OFF THE BOOKS. Thanks again Jason.

  38. Buccos Says:

I guess Carr killed it at the skills competition for the Pro Bowl. Deadly accurate

  39. NEfan Says:

Carr on Carolina they win the division.

  40. Miller5252 Says:

After getting crapped on by LV, there would be no way I would waive my no trade clause to help the team giving me the boot with draft picks or players. LV needs to just cut Carr and let him get moving on. The Raiders was once an all time great franchise has really messed things up since the Bucs pounded them in the Super Bowl. After Carr helped keep the franchise out of the ditches with Chucky situation and got one of the best, if not the best wide receiver in the game, they better be ready for no free agents to show up. Why would you go there when the show how they treat their most loyal players. If I was on that team, I’d be asking for a trade asap.

  41. catcard202 Says:

I so totally read that as LV GM in Mobile begging for someone/anyone to trade for Carr before the clock runs out & they have to cut him.

Any smart GM worth his salt would inquire, drag feet negotiating & never finalize a trade deal…Forcing the Raiders to cut Carr, as there’s ZERO % chance the Raiders allow Carr’s $40M in 2023/2024 guarantees trigger on 15FEB.

  42. Joshua porter Says:

Should take chiefs oc he comes here he gets to be a real oc and actually call plays.

  43. Buc50 Says:

People ragging on Atlanta but any team in the South that picks up Carr instantly has the best QB in the division. Laugh all you want but Trask is not in Carr’s class.

  44. Rand Says:

Buc50 the fact is Trask hasn’t had the chance to show his wares for even one whole season yet but Carr has been crappy for the Raiders for how long now? Stop trashing Trask when you have no ideal. You’re just running your mouth to hear yourself talk.

  45. Buc50 Says:

Rand…name fits by the way. If Trask had proven himself, we would have already heard about it. Even if he hadn’t done it in a game, we would have heard about it in practice.

  46. Rand Says:

    Buc50

    There you go again

  47. JD Still Says:

We can solve a lot of problems by going after Brian Johnson the Eagles QB coach, he has developed multiple top flight Quarterbacks , Hurts at Philadelphia,( who was projected as no higher than a backup QB and turned him into a Super Bowl starter), Minshew at Jacksonville ,( a backup and turned him into a starter) , and Trask at Florida, ( from walk on to one of the best Quarterbacks Florida ever had , and Hiesman finalist) , Johnson is ready for the OC job , and he is knows Trask and Minshew already , (who some think he could get to come over with him),so there you have it ,two fine young quarterbacks and your next 0C problems solved, ( sweeten the offer by including the title of assistant Headcoach in the OC offer and I believe he might jump , no risk no biscuit to coin a phrase.

  48. BuckyPhillips Says:

Trask is garbage. Gonna have to take a hit next year but we sold our soul for a championship. Maybe we can get a top 10 pick in 2024
