Bucs Silence And A Pending Kyle Trask Endorsement

February 5th, 2023

QB Kyle Trask

It’s a safe bet Bucs general manager Jason Licht and his successful team of front office gurus were a target of media last week at the Senior Bowl.

Tom Brady retired Wednesday morning, the biggest story in all of sports. But did anyone see a hint of an interview from the site of the Senior Bowl with a Bucs employee?

Joe didn’t, and all kinds of media were down there. And there were loads of interviews on SiriusXM NFL Radio, among other places. Joe can only imagine the texts Licht and Todd Bowles got from all over the country requesting an interview.

Joe finds the silence meaningful.

Yeah, Brady leaving the game is a reflective moment, but it also represents a damn exciting time in the history of the Buccaneers. It’s a true turning point for the franchise yet Bucs fans got crickets from Licht and Bowles outside of a few paragraphs in a released statement. Oh, well.

Joe wonders if Bucs honchos were trying to avoid the looming quarterback question.

Only 2021 second-round pick Kyle Trask is under contract and it’s unclear whether he’s quality backup quarterback material.

Trask was the No. 3 quarterback this season and only took a handful of snaps in a meaningless Week 18 game.

Are the Bucs prepared to publicly endorse Trask as a starter?

Last February at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Bucs No. 2 quarterback Blaine Gabbert was a pending free agent and Brady was in his initial retirement. Head coach Bucco Bruce Arians was hammered with quarterback questions at the Combine and did a big-time sales job of Gabbert as a talented and experienced starter who never had a shot as the No. 1 guy with a good football team. Arians also praised Trask.

In only three weeks, Bowles and Licht likely will stand for separate interviews at an official Combine podium to be grilled by media about their quarterback position.

Will they endorse Trask as their guy? If so, will they mean it?

No doubt Licht will endorse him after using the 33rd pick in the draft on him.

    ^^^^^^^
    Uh, the 64th pick.

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Cause Trask is a busted draft pic……that’s why no bucs brass or coach has ever commented on him being a successor to anyone……he couldn’t even beat out Blaine Gabbert!!!!

    ……now that’s pretty bad

  4. HC Grover Says:

    Might as well.

  5. Joe in Michigan Says:

    Trask = MJ Stewart

  6. TheBucsAnthem Says:

It is True that Blaine Gabbert has bounced around the League….but he was a Starter with Jacksonville and he played so poorly….that they traded him to the 49ers for 6th rd draft pick!!! WOW!!!!!……THAT’S HOW BAD Gabbert played considering he was drafted as the 10th pick in the 1st round of the draft!!!!!

Now if Trask Cannot even beat him out….that means Trask is awful!!!!

  7. Tye Says:

    It’s a Bucs life….
Whatever the end result when they do pick their qb starter, It will go down the toilet quickly!

  8. CleanHouse Says:

Just like poor Leftwich and Bowles never got a chance. BA sold everyone a load of goods

  9. Jack Clark Says:

“It’s a safe bet Bucs general manager Jason Licht and his successful team of front office gurus were a target of media last week at the Senior Bowl.”

Successful team of front office gurus is a HUGE exaggeration because they were only successful after they signed Tom Brady. That makes them more lucky than successful because look at where the Bucs have been before and after Tom Brady. If anyone is a guru it’s Tom Brady

  10. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

Give the ball to Trask, the kid will get the job done!

  11. Craig Says:

Where Trask is now has nothing to say about him as a QB, yet.

No one would sit Brady for a rookie and Arians wanted an experienced back-up. That means that Trask has not gotten a chance.

Christensen not only ran a bus over, but backed it up and did it again.

If Trask has a brain, and a desire to be an NFL QB, he will hire a QB whisperer and come into camp at his best. That even made Goff look good for a year.

Trask has the physical skills and good accuracy, he does need a chance, though I would rather have Brady give a true endorsement.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

They have been ambivalent regarding Trask in the past…..why change now?

  13. BFFL Says:

It appeared to me that Brady wanted an experienced guy to look over and discuss game shots on the sideline. That doesn’t mean Gabbert beat out Trask.

  14. JSmalls Says:

Why not back Trask? The last franchise that backed a QB behind Brady, Tom got his feelings hurt. There was no way Bucs brass were going to jeopardize any chance of Brady playing for the Bucs at any point. Do we believe Trask has gotten meaningful reps with our best weapons… Or anyone has really spent time evaluating him?

  15. Pelsbuc61 Says:

JBF, there’s absolutely nothing exciting about going from Brady to Trask. This franchise is back to the dark days with incompetent coaches, old, slow and arrogant players and a clueless ownership group. The Brady effect is over. This team needs a reboot from top to bottom.

  16. AlanBucsfan Says:

Trask’s success may come down to the right coaching. Jalen Hurts was projected to be a solid backup before his draft and here he is in the Super Bowl.

  17. Goatfarmer Says:

    Trashk and Goobert. Bwaaaaaahaaaaaahahahahaaaaaahahahahahaaaaa.

  18. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Just checking to see who is reading all my posts with that 33rd pick statement-nice to know you are such a fan Joe in michigan.

  19. Bojim Says:

Let him compete fairly for number 1.

  20. bucnut2 Says:

We need to blow this up. Hire a Shanahan disciple for OC. Build both lines, and trade Evans, Smith, and Jensen for picks. Give Godwin the Samuel role in the offense. 2023 will be tough but we will be able to fire Bowles, promote OC and draft a QB

  21. beano Says:

Here we go again. Another “Bash Trask” article with Joe’s gullible minions repeating the lie that Trask was allowed to compete with Gabbert and lost. There was never a competition between the two. Gabbert was gifted the #2 spot because Tom Brady wanted a veteran as his #2 and the Bucs did whatever Tom Brady wanted. Below are two well-publicized statements that prove this.

    1. In May 2022 – before training camp even started – Bucs quarterback coach Clyde Christensen said: “I DON’T SEE TRASK COMPETING WITH GABBERT FOR THE BACKUP JOB THIS YEAR [2022]. YOU CAN’T REP EVERYBODY. IT’S HARD TO GET GABBERT ENOUGH REPS. SO WE’LL PREPARE GABBERT AS THE NO. 2.”

    2. Soon after Christensen said that, Joe himself wrote here on JBF: “BUCS QUARTERBACK COACH CLYDE CHRISTENSEN SEEMED PRETTY CLEAR TO ANYONE LISTENING: THE BUCS CANNOT FIND A WAY TO GET 2021 SECOND-ROUND PICK KYLE TRASK ENOUGH SNAPS SO HE CAN HAVE A FAIR SHOT AT PUSHING BLAINE GABBERT FOR THE BACKUP JOB TO TOM BRADY. THEREFORE, GABBERT IS BRADY’S IMMEDIATE BACKUP. END OF STORY.”

Obviously, a lot changed after May 2022, including Trask getting a lot more work in training camp than expected. Analysis in all sports is a free-flowing thing. Yesterday’s truth often is tomorrow’s fiction. –Joe

Only ignoramus Trask haters keep peddling the fiction that there was this great competition between Trask and Gabbert, on the field, both playing with the ones, and Gabbert won. It never happened. Both Christensen and Joe said so.

  22. Joe in Michigan Says:

Trask is like MJ Stewart in that he doesn’t really have the attributes you’re looking for, Stewart was slow and short, Trask is slow and doesn’t have an impressive arm. So the next year the Bucs invested 2nd and 3rd Round picks in SMB and Dean. Unless they sign a proven bet, the Bucs will probably use a first or second day draft pick on a QB.

  23. Joe in Michigan Says:

    *Proven vet

  24. JD Still Says:

Alan Bucsfan, You hit the nail on the head , with the coaches that were in place , ( now departed) Trask was never going to get a chance with that good ol boys club), but now things have changed and there is an opening. I read a very interesting article that said the Bucs should go after Brian Johnson the QB coach with Philadelphia as Tampa’s new OC and the reasoning is sound, Johnson has proved himself and is ready to move up to an OC position , Johnson as a coach has coached Hurts at Philadelphia, Minshew at Jacksonville and Trask at Florida, that’s a great run by anyone’s standards! He is on a hot track Trask is already familiar with him , and they say he could bring Minshew in who is also familiar with Johnson that would be two good solid young Quarterbacks with a coach who knows them both! He would need some incentive to come here, I believe an offensive coordinator and assistant head coach position offer might just be enough incentive to make that happen!

  25. Redeemer Says:

Please stop. This is a performance based league. If you really think they didn’t get a good look at Trask in camp, then you’re crazy. This stupid theory has been bantered about for me months now. If it’s like you people think, that Trask never got a shot to prove himself, then it’s a horrible disservice to the kid. The best players play. Then they become backups. The pretzel twisting logic as to why Trask has only dressed for two games is hard to figure.

  26. Joe in Michigan Says:

Amen, Redeemer! Do you think it’s the same folks who thought Mike Glennon never got a fair shake? The Sage said Trask reminds him of Mike Glennon, and Ira has forgotten more about football than I’ve ever known.

  27. Allbuccedup Says:

Any other team in the NFL would have released him by now. It looks like hes in the Bucs doghouse along with Vaughn. The only receiver Trask was on the same page with was Tyler Johnson in pre season then Bowles cut him. Then of course brought him later in the season and put him on the practice squad.

  28. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Redeemer

You gotta understand something first about Bucs fans……they maybe one of the dumbest fans of any franchise in the NFL. These Bucs fans are not like devoted Broncos or Packers fans…..where there are hard-core fans who actually know the game of football…..No, Bucs fans are a bunch of delusional, dysfunctional, uneducated fans who still Think Jameis Winston can carry this team to a Superbowl…..they are truly lost.

  29. Alanbucsfan Says:

    JD Still
The rumor is that Brian Johnson will move up to Eagles’ O/C if their current O/C gets a Head Coaching job. But if that doesn’t happen, Bucs should go all out for Johnson.

  30. Mike Says:

Trask needs an opportunity to play. Honestly, if he stinks up the joint, it won’t hurt the Bucs long term.

  31. Infomeplease Says:

@ Redeemer, I’m not uneducated!! I have a doctorate from FU!! I was also happy to see Jameis depart and go to the Saints!!

  32. Buccos Says:

BucsAnthem- I’ve got an MBA from UF. Maybe you are talking about yourself

  33. Buccos Says:

What do they call that? Projection I believe

  34. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Will they endorse Trask as their guy?’

I doubt it. Just because Trask is the only QB under contract isn’t a valid reason to endorse him at this point. Bucs will be much netter off if they re-sign Gabbert (he’s better than most folks give him credit for) & sign a talented FA QB on the cheap (there’s plenty of them on the market), THEN … let them all compete for the starting gig. Decision on the winner to be made by … the new OC, whoever that may be.

Far as BA not endorsing Trask goes, rookie QBs really weren’t his thing as I seem to remember. Kinda preferred the more seasoned vets like Manning, Brady, Palmer. And since Gabbert had QB’d for him back in 2017 and knew BA’s system, it’s understandable IMO that BA would prefer him over Trask.

  35. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Blow it up. Turn the reigns over to Trask in 2023 and let’s see what we have. If he stinks, which is probable, we won’t win many games in this awful division. At that point, you fire Bowels and you get a premium QB with a high draft pick in 2024. All this talk that we can reload is foolishness. I can’t imagine Bowels can get us a premium OC. Who would want to work for him? I sure wouldn’t. He inspires absolutely nothing.

  36. Rayjay1122 Says:

They were quiet and avoided the media because they would have to answer questions about football and they know nothing about that subject.

  37. beano Says:

AlanBucsfan Says: “Jalen Hurts was projected to be a solid backup before his draft and here he is in the Super Bowl.

True. Unfortunately, there is no way Bucs fans would ever tolerate the Bucs doing what the Eagles did. Consider the facts:

    1. The Eagles drafted Jalen Hurts in 2020 in the second round with pick #53 (sound familiar, JBFers?).

    2. He sucked his 2020 rookie season, playing in 15 games (with the starters!) and finishing with 6 TDs to 4 INTs and a lowly QBR rating of 33.8.

    3. Then, in the Eagles’ 2021 training camp, Hurts struggled. Headlines appeared such as “JALEN HURTS HAS WORST DAY OF PRACTICE AT EAGLES TRAINING CAMP” (sound familiar, Joe?).

    4. Then, “GOING INTO THE 2021 SEASON, NEARLY EVERY ANALYST IN THE NFL WAS CRITICIZING JALEN HURTS” (sound familiar, JBFers?).

    5. Hurts improved his second season, 2021, finishing with 16 TDs to 9 INTs.

    6. Hurts improved again his third season, 2022, finishing with 22 TDs to 6 INTs – an almost 4:1 ratio – and he and the Eagles are going to the Super Bowl and the Bucs are not.

Now, compare how the Eagles patiently handled Hurts to the incessant vitriol on this website directed to a similar draft pick – Kyle Trask – who has not been given anywhere near the opportunities Hurts was given by the Eagles over THREE SEASONS. It is not a mystery why the Bucs have never developed a quarterback.

Someone else here said this is the dumbest fan base in the NFL. I’m sold.

  38. RuKa_44 Says:

Gentleman… there was no way Trask would be the number 2 behind Brady! Do you know why? Because Brady wanted an experience backup QB, to help him prepare each week and function as a second pair of eyes during the games. Just look at Brady and Gabertt going over plays on the bench after each play.
That is for me the most puzzling thing about the Trask pick: there was no way he would ever be Nr. 2 QB while Brady was here! So, from the beginning we were going to end up in this situation, not knowing what we have in Trask, and thus having to get a veteran QB! Why take Trask then? What was the purpose? I believe this was a HUGE blunder by Licht

  39. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Beano:
    2 more facts-
Hurts has a great QB coach and Eagles have best OLine in football.

  40. sasquatch Says:

Yeah, I think they’re a little busy, not just evaluating and interviewing players at the Senior Bowl, but they were probably interviewing candidates to fill out their coaching staff outside of the OC position, as well as dealing with the OC question. Talking to the media is way down on their list of priorities right now. Not to mention, anything they say to the media is gonna be sliced and diced and spun into the usual Bucs fan negativity… so why bother? They’ll talk when they’ve hired the coaches for 2023.

  41. sasquatch Says:

@beano must be related to Kyle Trask.

“LEAVE KYLE TRASK ALONE!!! LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!”

Most of us don’t hate Kyle Trask, we’re just skeptical because we’ve seen no reason to believe he has a chance to be a franchise QB.

Also, on the other hand, people who wanna bash Licht for drafting Trask… Also a waste of time. He’s on the team now and we make the best of it. I’m only concerned about 2023 and the future.

  42. Patrick Says:

Speak for yourself, Anthem. Kyle Trask finished 4th on the Heisman ballot behind Devonta Smith, Trevor Lawrence, and Mac Jones. He had a monster year at FL his senior year. He was great. I saw every game he played. I think that was an AWESOME pick to manage to get him with the 64th pick in the 2nd, and I’m glad he is here and will get an opportunity. I’d rather have him right now, than Mac Jones. If he doesn’t pan out, then Bucs are in the QB business in 2024 draft. Same as tanking only not. Maybe you need to educate yourself.

  43. Buddha Says:

Welcome the I hate the Tampa Bay Buccaneers site. So much paranoia here.

  44. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

    I agree.

    Bring back Gabbert. ($2.5M)

    Bring in a cheap FA (Baker/Brissett). ($5M-6M)

Let Trask compete for the job. ($1.5M)

The Bucs just don’t have the cap space to spend much more than that this season…

  45. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

Plus – we need to spend most of our draft picks on defense – especially picks 1-3.

I really don’t want to spend another high draft pick on a 3rd string clipboard holder…

  46. Kgh4life Says:

Off topic, I thought the Bucs would’ve hired a new OC by now. Maybe with no legitimate starting QB on the roster, candidates don’t want the job.

  47. Rod Munch Says:

Marine Buc – Gabbert would want a lot more money than that, since I can’t believe he doesn’t think he’d win the job. Also Gabbert has been played below market wages, I think based on the idea he wither wouldn’t play, or if he did, with that offense, he’d put up numbers that would get him a lot more money in the future. I think if he did resign, he’d want at least $6-7m with a bunch of incentives. I wouldn’t want him back at any price as I don’t know what the point of having him back is as there’s no upside. He’s not good, maybe he’s a C-level backup, but I’d much rather have Trask or some rookie in that role and just tank to get the #1 overall pick. Gabbert is slightly better, and that would be enough that he might lose you that #1 pick, and end up like #7 overall and lose out on all the good prospects.

As for Baker, no way he’s cheap. I think he’s going to be more like $15m, minimum. Brissett is probably around $10m, but again, he just doesn’t have much upside. He had a nice start to his year, but really trailed off as the season went along.

So I say let Trask have the job, and maybe draft a mobile strong arm QB late in the draft, and get a UDFA with a strong arm as well and just go to camp with that and see what happens. In the meantime, clean up the cap and be ready to go in 2024.

Unless you can trade for Rodgers. If you can do that, I’d go all-in again.

  48. Rod Munch Says:

Kgh4life – I’m pretty sure the Bucs were waiting to see what Brady was going to do before making any moves, since it’s likely going to impact the offense they run. Also, perhaps it’s possible they just don’t like any of the candidates they’ve talked to.

I’d guess we’ll hear something early this week.

  49. Rod Munch Says:

Kgh4life – Oh, and the Bucs might be waiting to see what happens with Carr (blah) and, perhaps, Rodgers before making any moves.

In any case there aren’t a lot of openings, so it’s not like they have to rush to beat out anyone else, so they can take their time.

  50. beano Says:

Joe Says: “A lot changed after May 2022”

Not the fact that, as QB Coach Clyde Christensen said, there was to be no – and so there was no – competition between Gabbert and Trask. Gabbert played with the ones; Trask never did. Never. Brady wouldn’t allow it.

If you’re claiming there was a competition on the field with the ones between Gabbert and Trask, give us a link. Because nobody’s ever heard of it.

By the way, why don’t you respond to my post on the gross disparity between the Eagles’ patient handling of Hurts and your and other JBFers’ incessant disparagement of Trask?

If Kyle Trask gets his chance I already see the people who will hope he fail . That means any game we lose it will be his fault regardless how he plays. If lose with the same o line Brady played with it will be Trask fault. Make no mistake about it you ain’t going to hear nothing else about our running game now even if it’s bad watch and see lol 🤣🤣. No body is going to care about the running game now especially from the media and the fans on this site. Watch and see lol 🤣🤣 you heard it from me first !!

  54. mark2001 Says:

Rod…the Packers have said they won’t trade him in the NFC. He makes 50 mil. a year. The Trade value the Packers are looking for is two firsts and two seconds. Won’t happen for multiple reasons. And Rodgers wants to play for a team ready to make a run at the SB. Not a team backing its’ way into a hapless division.

  55. mark2001 Says:

O’Neill.. if we win with Trask we win. And we are happy. If we lose, we lose. And if he has as many ints’ as he has TD’s, he won’t be around long.

Do you really think there are any teams clamoring for Blaine’s services?

He will be lucky to fetch $2.5M in 2023…

  61. Rand Says:

    mark2001

I remember Trask getting intercepted twice against the Titans in preseason and neither one were his fault. They bounced off the hands of his receivers and snagged by the defenders. Point is, it wasn’t because of his accuracy but because of the WR’s, and they were counted against him anyway. So to make an accurate evaluation one should take that into consideration but if you already have a preconceived prejudice against him you won’t. So many here are just opinionated haters willing to give him the Glennon treatment. This is why Tampa can’t develop their own QB’s. It seems the fanbase always wants other team hand -me-downs

  62. Joe in Michigan Says:

Oneilbuc: Are you a professional soothsayer? If so, how many games will Trask start for the Bucs in the 2023 season?

  63. Oneilbuc Says:

Rand . I agree 💯 percent bro I been saying this and also I don’t hear anything about the running game now. And just like I said everything will be his fault and now they brought up the Titans preseason game if those picks were thrown by Brady than they would have said the picks came off the recivers hands. But I it’s funny how they don’t bring up the dolphins game or the Texans game from 2021 because he played good!!

  64. Tye Says:

I am all for Carr to the Bucs but if not, Roll with Trask…

  65. The Anomaly Says:

You aren’t winning with Carr or Mayfield

  66. The Anomaly Says:

No reason not to give Trask a chance

No reason to bring in Carr or Mayfield

  67. beano Says:

    Sasquatch,

Read my post above detailing the Eagles’ handling of Hurts over 3 seasons. Would you have given Hurts 3 seasons after his disastrous 1st season? If so, is Trask – who has yet to take a snap with the Bucs first team – not entitled to an opportunity too?

  73. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I agree that I rather have Trask than Gabbert. True, Gabbert did know Arians offense, but we will no longer be running Arians Offense, so what is the reason for having him ?
If we do draft a QB, I think we may be able to get the Tennessee Quarterback because he hurt his knee.
I say if he falls far enough, grab him!

  74. Allbuccedup Says:

Prepare for the return of Jaymiss!

  75. Patrick Says:

K4life- nobody wants the coordinator job because it’s a time bomb. They all know Bowles already has one foot out the door. Why would anyone want to take that job? Bowles gets fired at the end of next year if not before, then everyone gets fired, and a new head coach is hired who wants his own peeps. That’s reason number 17 on my list of why the Glazer’s should have cut the cord. It’s a waste of time keeping a coach that can’t….coach. Thier best bet was to promote from within keeping Temp Todd, but they fired everybody else. Lol What I DON’T want is someone coming in with a promise they will be elevated to head coach after the inevitable Bowles canning. No more promises. That never works anyway. It’ll set us back a decade or more, with a revolving door of coaches and players. BUCS are in a tough spot, because they aren’t brave enough to do what should have been done immediately after that playoff embarrassment.

  76. Letsbucinggo Says:

It makes sense why would they interview the Saints QB coach and further more what does he and Todd Monken have in common Jamies Winston.

  77. Miller5252 Says:

@Beano You sure do have a passion for Trask! Do you really think that Bucs would just hold a QB back because of a good ole boys club? Being so far over the cap and some good free agents out there, if the Bucs thought Trask was the man and could play I think they’d come out and say it now. I like the passion Beano! I just don’t think anyone sees a NFL starting QB at OBP.

  78. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Draft a CB tp replace Jamel Dean
Draft a LB to replace LVD
Draft a TE to replace Cameron Brate

Get lucky on a late round WR & RB
    Pray for Shaq Barrett’s recovery

Have Kyle Trask compete with Gabbert or another cheap FA veteran QB

This is my plan…….the worst that can happen is we will get much younger and ease our cap situation…..and get a higher draft pick for next year.

Likely along with comp picks for Dean & LVD

  79. James Patrick Reilly Says:

A man accepts his mistakes. It is time to move on from Trask.

  80. TraderDave Says:

The Bucs have NEVER been good with #1 draft picks. Back in the early days (creamsickle uniforms) they could have drafted Earl Campbell and Tony Dorsett in the same back field! I also remember a QB named Doug Williams who was also bashed by fans and media when the Bucs deployed their patented “Stumble, Fumble and Throw” offense. Seems to me Doug Williams made it to the Super Bowl and threw how many TD passes on the way to victory? If memory serves me correctly it was 5 but with the then Washington Redskins. They’ll probably do the same with Trask, trial by fire and then send him somewhere where they actually know something about football.

  81. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … Now if only we could come up with a real pass rush someplace in there. We need a stud DT to pair with Vea AND a stud DE/OLB to pair with Shaq ASSUMING he’s ready to go when the season cranks off. We MIGHT be able to get 1, but I really doubt we’re in a position to draft both & get starters.

I’m hoping that LVD is willing to re-up for about half of what he was making, and that we bring back Gholston, RNR & Nelson as a minimum (no way we can replace the entire DLine in 1 year). If LVD is a no-go, I wouldn’t be opposed to bringing back Kwon but playing him in LVD’s position (I always felt he was miscast as a MLB).

The biggest hope though is that we can find a way to re-sign Dean. May have to let him test the market though to see if we can really afford him (what do they call that? a tender?).

  82. steele Says:

I predict the Bucs will allow two things at once, because “they have invested in it already”. Todd “I never got a chance” Bowles will get to be king, with approved servants and flunkies. Kyle “I never got a chance” Trask will start.

  83. BA’s Red Pen Says:

The only people endorsing Trask wear orange and blue diapers.

  84. Jack Clark Says:

I just watched highlights of Kyle Trask from college and wow he’s good! He’s great at throwing jump balls vertically down the field to receivers who can high point the ball like Mike Evans. He’s also good at throwing on the run, throwing off his back foot when his offensive line doesn’t hold up, and doing run pass options. All Trask needs is a good offensive coordinator to tailor our offense around his strengths and weaknesses. Hook him up with a solid tight end and a reliable running game and he could be our next messiah!

  85. catcard202 Says:

Brady didn’t want ANYONE taking 1st team reps but him. So, BA was smart in knowing he needed an experienced QB2 in his/Lefty’s system. Gabbert was that guy.

The idea of bringing in a developmental QB after 2020 SB run was 100% on point, given TB12’s potential for retirement…But 2021 was not a great QB draft…So reaching for Trask at the bottom of the second was a well calculated risk…#64 contract = BU QB money for 4yrs.

The plan for Trask to be given at least 1yr to develop made sense…Take time to dig into the mental side of the game, participated in QB discussions, study league defense tendencies & learn to be a NFL QB from TB12….Break him down & build him up behind the scenes to be ready when TB12 walked away.

It all sounded great in theory….(To bad that was in the system that Bowles just flushed!).

So, who knows what Bucs REALLY have in #2 as far as QB1…Healthy Scratch’s true potential is a mystery to us. Only the FO & players know what he’s been like at the facility. Time will tell if he’s the next big thing or just a guy.

What we do know is this is the camp for him to compete for the #1 job & for the FO to bring in his competition for that job. Probably 2-3 QB’s.

Too bad Bucs don’t have an offensive staff to coach that side of the ball, yet.
That might help us & Trask understand what direction this franchise is heading.

  86. Blokneel Says:

Going in the shttttr Catturd. Only direction Bowels knows.

  87. Rod Munch Says:

Marine Buc – I think Gabbert will just retire rather than playing for minimum wage level money. He was a high 1st round pick and has money, so he’s not desperate. To be clear, I don’t like him at all, don’t want him back, but also the salary he took, even for a no-name backup QB was very low money for a veteran with playing time. Coming into the season thinking he should win the starter job, there’s just no way he’d take that low of salary. Maybe I’m wrong, but I also wouldn’t pay him anything other than minimum wage since I wouldn’t want him starting.

Again, I’d just take my chances with Trask and assume this is a lost season, and just see how it goes. Who knows, maybe he turns out to be good.

  88. Rod Munch Says:

catcard202 – Taking Trask was, by far, the biggest mistake Licht has made as GM, and yes, that includes picking a kicker too high.

If the Bucs had taken an offensive lineman, maybe a linebacker, maybe another corner, pretty much anything else, maybe the Bucs win another SB. All they had to do was beat the Rams last year, and they’d have wiped the floor with everyone else.

Taking Trask was a terrible idea. Yes, I know what they were thinking, but it was really stupid, in particular since anyone could watch his college tape and see he doesn’t have an NFL arm, not without a ton of work.

  89. Rod Munch Says:

mark2001 – Well, to be clear, I was just saying blow up the team unless you can get Rodgers, which I don’t think is very likely. With that said, would you give up 2 1st and 2 2nds to get another HOF QB for 3 or 4 years? Uh, yes, without question.

As for his money – the cap unexpectedly went up a lot this year, and next year could go up another $60m. Yes, the Bucs are in legit cap hell this year, but you can always move an incoming players money around since you’re not responsible for signing bonuses and such and can restructure all you want.

The talent level in GB on his line and with his WR’s is way below what he’d have here. Also, yes, Rodgers is a choke artist, but I’ll take choking in the NFC Championship game over going 4-13 for the next 3 seasons.

But, as you said, I don’t really see the Packers dumping Rodgers to an old NFC Central rival.

  90. Tackleblockwin Says:

I think it is silly to judge Trask before we see him with the starters. I wouldn’t mind drafting a rookie QB as well. We must figure out QB first then build around it.

  91. beano Says:

Miller5252 Says: “Do you really think that Bucs would just hold a QB back”

It is undeniable they did, because Brady wanted a veretran as his backup. Here are 2 FACTS:

  92. beano Says:

Rod Munch Says: “Taking Trask was a terrible idea. He doesn’t have an NFL arm.”

There goes JBF’s biggest liar again. The guy who has admitted, “I hate all Gators”. Always spewing flat out lies about Trask’s arm when the NFL’s own scouting report on Trask says this:

“TRASK CLEARLY HAS THE ARM STRENGTH. CAN DELIVER DEEP THROWS WITH OUTSTANDING TOUCH. ARM STRENGTH TO WHIP FIELD-SIDE DEEP OUTS WITH NO ISSUES.”

Rod, here is some breaking news: Repeating your lies over and over again doesn’t make them true.

  93. beano Says:

Rod Munch Says: “Taking Trask was a terrible idea. He doesn’t have an NFL arm.”

That’s funny, Rod. I distinctly recall you commenting several times here in JBF Bucs preseason game threads that Trask showed NFL velocity. That’s the problem with lying, Rod. It always catches up to you.

  94. Davenport Says:

    Want to know about Trask?
    Play him

Bring in a career back up like Brissett just in case Trask can’t cut it. Then go QB shoping/drafting next year.

  95. D-Rok Says:

    @Oneil,

If our run game doesn’t improve quite a bit this year, this fan will be pissed, regardless of who is or isn’t under center.

I mean, our run game HAS TO improve, doesn’t it? Worst run game in the history of the league last year – we can’t get worse, can we?

Wait, don’t answer that. Our O-line MUST improve, period!

  96. Mike Johnson Says:

Time to throw this kid Trask to the wolves. He’s been babied long enough. Either you do do, you don’t, you will or you Won’t. Put him out there. Lets see what he’s got. We drafted him in the 2nd rd hopefully for a reason. Ruck up Trask, Your showdown time to poop or get off the pot is coming. And Justice for all baby.

  97. Oneilbuc Says:

D-rok . Me and you may feel that way about the running game but it didn’t seems to matter when it’s a quarterback that they don’t like and now we have another quarterback that they don’t like so most of the people that’s anti Kyle Trask ain’t going to care about the running game being bad if when we lose games. Trask will not get the excuses Brady got !!

  98. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Bucs aren’t trading away draft picks to acquire someone else’s problem.

Buc fans want to see Trask. We know what he can do. Big arm fearless guy with a chip on his shoulder. Nobody gave him a chance at Florida until they were out of choices and then he tore it up going toe to toe with Alabama.

The kid can play. He’s a hometown favorite. We’re in a rebuild. This is a no-brainer. They’ll sign Gabbert, they’ll have a QB competition which Trask will win – we’ll have a solid back up and insurance policy.

You may not like it but accept it. Its Trask. Get used to the idea.

  99. vadertime Says:

Kyle trask is not a top caliber QB. He is nowhere near in TB12’s league. After having the GOAT for 3 years it’ll tough for anyone to fill those shoes. You can’t settle for a Ford Fiesta after you retired your Lamborghini. The Bucs need and deserve a better QB and they deserve a better HC than Bowles. Go bucs.

  100. beano Says:

vadertime Says: “Kyle trask is not a top caliber QB.”

When did you see him play with the first team? Oh, you didn’t? Well, then, you’re an idiot.

  101. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Trask has superior college numbers to any QB in this class.

4300 yards 43 TDs 8 INT in the SEC.

That’s good and why they drafted him.

  102. beano Says:

    “Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

4300 yards 43 TDs 8 INT in the SEC.

Yeah, but he went to Florida, and doesn’t haven’t the “look” if you know what I mean, so they shouldn’t have drafted him. /s

  103. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    “The look”

408 yards in the SEC championship game vs Alabama was a good look.

You draft a guy to groom behind Brady because you know TB12 has a short Window.

Brady retires. Now you don’t want the kid you drafted in the second round to start? Because BA had to make sure his caddy Gabbert had a job and forced Trask to #3?

Come on now. Why would you shoot yourself in the foot?

They picked Trask for this very reason. Now it’s time to collect on that investment.

  104. Incognitoe Says:

Just play Trask and see what happens.
What do we have to lose?
It’s all practice till we get a real coach
who can evaluate Trask and decide if
that’s his qb or draft a qb with that high
    pick Bowles will bring us

  105. Bucsman90 Says:

Rumor is he was struggling to learn the playbook and thats why he got beat out in camp

  106. Jeremy Says:

All most of you betches do is talk shet. You guys dont know a fugging thing about managing a football team but you act as if you do. STFU and ket it play out. Whiny azz know it all betches, piss poor fans all of need to find another team to route for or go back to your home town. I hope Kyle Trask makes fools out of all of you. It is what it is now please move on and quit crying

  107. Slickrick Says:

Too everyone calling Trask trash. He was never in contention to be a starter OR a backup. From day 1 we were told the plan was for him to sit and learn behind Brady, and gabbert had years of experience with Arians and Bucs we’re in a win now mode. He was never battling Gabbert, he was expected to get a redshirt treatment here to begin with. And as for the Atlanta game? He had or 2nd and 3rd stringers out there vs Atlanta’s starters. Not really fair.

  108. Slickrick Says:

I say we see what he can do. He can surprise everyone and throw for 4500 yards and 30 TD and 5ints for all we know. Or have a Winton type year with 30 ints. Point is just see what he can do. We are 50 million over the cap anyways rn, and if he struggles, we should be in prime position to get a QB in what’s expected to be a QB heavy draft. Just give Trask a chance.

  109. chickster Says:

we gotta go with trask now

  110. garro Says:

Gonna get straight answers this time I just know it!
Come on guys! When in the history of the Bucs has the media gotten the truth from the Buc brass?
