CBS: Bucs Need Jimmy Garoppolo

February 8th, 2023

Experienced winner.

Joe understands not all Bucs fans agree on who the successor to Tom Brady dealing with Ryan Jensen’s sweaty arse should be.

Some believe in Derek Carr. Some want Kyle Trask. Others are OK with Blaine Gabbert. So here’s another name to ponder.

If the Bucs really are serious about winning the putrid NFC South and making another run at a Super Bowl, why not put the ball into the hands of a guy who has been there, done that?

For Jordan Dajani of CBS, that man is Jimmy GQ.

In a column Dajani typed about which free agent every team needs to target — the free agency dinner bell rings next month — the Bucs should fill the quarterback void with the most successful one available. That would be Jimmy GQ.

… an offense that still has plenty of pieces to be relatively successful. Derek Carr will probably be in consideration too, but I wonder which player between he and Jimmy G will be more expensive. The Buccaneers’ cap situation is one of the worst in the league, so Jason Licht should chase the more inexpensive of these experienced signal-callers. Could Brady’s former backup finally replace him under center? Time is a flat circle.

Joe is a big fan of Jimmy GQ and not just because of his choice of a higher learning institute. This guy wins, that’s all there is to it. He may not be the fastest or have the strongest arm, but he wins.

Problem is, Jimmy GQ is as brittle as a hard taco shell. Once has Jimmy GQ played in 16 games in a season since he escaped the boot of Bill Belicheat. Once. And that same year, the 49ers had a lead on the Chiefs in the fourth quarter in the Super Bowl. Yet some blame Jimmy GQ for John Lynch’s defense bending over.

So if Jimmy GQ can stay healthy, yeah, he’s much better (and probably cheaper) than Derek Carr.

The problem with Jimmy GQ is a team’s training staff may get as much of a workout as the players around him. And that same team better have a quality backup ready to rock and roll.

Hell, if Jimmy GQ could stay healthy, the 49ers might just be playing Sunday night.

The Bucs could do a whole lot worse than Jimmy GQ. Besides, for some, um (ahem), casual fans, Jimmy GQ might just be Brady’s equal.

    Glassman

  2. Mord Says:

Even if injury optimism wins, how could this possibly work in the salary cap?

  3. Winny Testaverde Says:

Better than Used Carr…but still likely a stretch. Stay the course with a Gabbert, Trask/Griffin 3 headed monster…and ride them to a top 3 pick!

  4. Cobraboy Says:

    “Jimmy Taco Shell,” aka JTS2

    Now that’s funn-nee…

(I’d rather clean up the cap unless JTS2 comes cheap.)

  5. Jaw1994 Says:

I’ll literally just not watch next season if we sign the guy that if a slight windchill comes the man will snap every bone in his body

  6. Sketch813 Says:

We sign Jimmy G, Kyle Trask will get a lot of starts. The man is brittle. What good is it if he plays half the season?

  7. Marine Buc Says:

We need Jimmy G. like we need another female defensive line coach…

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

    What a joke!!!!!

Jimmy G. can’t play more than 6 games per season.

    No THANKS!!!!

  8. Buc4evr Says:

I think all the options are pretty weak to be honest. The only way to get even close to Brady quality would be to sign Rodgers. Realistically probably Brissett or Mayfield or even Darnold… ugh. Don’t think the Bucs have much of a chance next year with either Trask or Gabbert…. Already looking pretty bleak.

  9. zzbucs Says:

    Is this guy nuts???

Probably he is on the Jimmy G´s payroll, or he just had nothing interesting to say…

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jimmy GQ is a great QB…but extremely fragile…and out of our price range.

I mean, let’s be honest here…we’re talking about these good QBs and there is no chance we get them at all.

The Jags might release a QB after the SB though.

“I’ll literally just not watch next season if we sign the guy that if a slight windchill comes the man will snap every bone in his body”

If the Bucs tank, I probably will not watch anyway. What would be the point?

Of course, I claim that now…but when the season starts, I’ll probably give in.

  12. Aceofaerospace Says:

I’m all in on Jimmy G with Trask as his backup. If he does get hurt early again then we may be in the sweepstakes. But for goodness sakes, try to win. Do everything to win until you’re mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Don’t ask Evans, Godwin, David and Jensen to try to lose as many games as possible to “hope” to get a chance at a quarterback that has never taken an NFL snap. That’s just plain asinine. These warriors deserve better than that. Otherwise trade all of them or release them and don’t charge admission to games you’re trying loose. That’s a dick move.

  13. Redeemer Says:

They could win the putrid south with Jimmy, if healthy. He’ll go to the highest bidder though. Firmly believe he cares more about his pocket book, than winning. He could’ve returned to the Patriots, but was unwilling to adjust his contract. Guy doesn’t love football. Thinks of it as a job. Go ask Edelman about his shoulder injury. Wouldn’t take the needle.

  14. Rayjay1122 Says:

My wife wants Jimmy GQ, and she also thinks he is a good QB…

  15. MadMax Says:

We’re in rebuild with cap H3ll…dont sign a QB. Just go with trask and look forward to a bad season and high draft picks next year. If we dont get Hooker in this draft, then fine, draft a qb next year. Meanwhile build a nice O line for the future QB, then work on CB and D line.

  16. NEfan Says:

The Pat’s players used to shat on him for poor effort in practice.

  17. stpetebucfan Says:

I’ve spent the past few years ranting about the damage Jameis Winston did to this franchise. Perhaps too much and that is why no one is taking the bait.

I can get over my disgust for his past behavior IF he’s truly a changed man! He’s now persona non grata in N.O. and very upset that they chose Andy Dalton over him even after he got healthy. He’s available and motivated.

Question to all…is JW out of the question because of his history with the franchise? I honestly do not have a solid opinion.

  18. MadMax Says:

Good gosh, no, not that nightmare JW again lol.

  19. surferbuc Says:

We couldn’t nake a run at the Super Bowl last season with Tom Brady and we’re going to do so with Jimmy G? LMAO

  20. HC Grover Says:

    Bwahhahaha!

  21. Marine Buc Says:

Every person working at CBS needs to be drug tested and FIRED!!!

    Just like Twitter.

Clean house. What a bunch of ignorant mouth breathers.

  22. Craig Says:

Jimmy GQ needs a Shanahan running game to shine. The Bucs will never have one of those, and, at the start of the season the run game will look bad.

Save the money, draft picks, and cap space; run with Trask/Gabbert this season.

Get a decent OC first, then get a good competition for QB, then pray.

  23. Dooley Says:

Jimmy G is a gunpowderless glass cannon

  24. Joe Swanson Says:

Can’t see paying 25mil plus to be on injured reserve half the year. But Lichts been known to do stupid things before like draft a kicker in the second round.

  25. Crickett Baker Says:

Winny, Griffin is gone. I REALLY do NOT want us to sign anyone with an injury history!! Almost everyone we signed last year had them before and had them with us. Suh didn’t and we let him go. I do not know what the team was thinking last year.

  26. Duane Says:

If he is an inexpensive bridge option, he has value. He will not play a 17 game season, so that gives Trask or a draft pick time to learn the new system. You play your cards right, he goes down early, we find out his backup is useless, and are set for a top pick in the Caleb sweepstakes.

  27. Miller5252 Says:

Ole Jimmy G needs to go somewhere else. What was that saying last year or the year before from one of the Bucs coaches…. If G could throw a deep ball he would have won 2 super bowls by now….. if you can’t get Carr or maybe Lamar just go with Trask. That way it’s a win win no matter what. If Trask wins, then Bowls looks like a genius. If Trask loses, both him and Bowles are gone, we’re outta cap hell and we get a new coach and QB. See….. win win

  28. Tom McDonald Says:

Jimmy is far better than any other free agent and (when healthy) as accurate as any QB ever (ever, ask Joe Montana). We’d need a bulky O line and play calls to protect him, good back up just in case, but the fact is as you say, Garoppolo can lead Tampa Bay to the Super Bowl. And if we don’t somehow get him, we may well be watching him there with the Colts, Raiders or even Jets. He’s the best choice, period.

  29. ItzOK Says:

if they sign him he will be lucky to play 10 games. He gets hurt every single year its the reason SF made moves for Lance. Only way is if you sign him to back up dollars and let him compete. At this point you just need to pay the piper, rip of the band aid and pay for the contracts and moves made in order to win a superbowl as chase another couple runs at it.

  30. BrianBucs Says:

Bruce Arians said last year the Jimmy G doesn’t have a big enough arm to play in the Bucs offense.
However, the new OC may just be allowed to use his own offense, so………….

  31. Kjl Says:

    Hendon Hooker

  32. Tye Says:

Derek Carr – young-ish; durable; proven in this league

Jimmy G – I would be ok with that.. concerns with his frailty….

Kyle Trask – skeptical BUT thrilled IF he turns out a good starter…

Blaine Gabbert – Nothing exiting; would not be thrilled BUT hope I would be proven wrong…

Draft qb – NO! not in the 1st rounds… Take a chance in the middle rounds, sure… The Bucs just can’t develop qbs and they need to build the trenches…

  33. NYbucsfan Says:

When was the last time you played an entire season? Enough said!

  34. surferbuc Says:

Jimmy G lost out to Trey Lance who had QBR ratings of 39.0 and 34.7 his first 2 seasons. And you guys like Lance over Trask? LMAO.

  35. Go Bucs Go Says:

Just came to sad realization that Gabbert and Trask in whichever order are our best option for 2023 season.

No way out of this abyss. Might as well roll the dice and move along. Hope for the best in draft next year.

    Go Bucs!

  36. chickster Says:

    Keep gabbert off this team

  37. Waterboy Says:

Only if he comes with that SF defense and running game.

  38. Yucs2Bucs Says:

    Trade for Jordan Love !!!

  39. Bosch Says:

Just more Pundits flatuating deuces at the wall to see what sticks. Blah, blah, blah

  40. Bucs56 Says:

    No glass Jimmy!

Guy doesn’t even love football. Just shows up and collects a paycheck until something is sore.

  41. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Bucs can’t afford Carr or Jimmy G. Bucs should sign Mayfield on a one year prove it deal, take the Brady cap hit this year and get some young, fast and hungry player like Pacheco in KC.

  42. Tom Sumner Says:

Garoppoloooooooooo Totally! with Blane and Kyle…Bank it

  43. Capt.Tim Says:

I think Baker Mayfield might be the answer.
Jimmy G is a great QB. I would love to see him here. Money may be the issue
I actually like Blaine Gabbert. Dont think He can get you to a Super Bowl.

Every year we wait for a QB-Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Lavonte David, Lenny F, etc- all get older. Time is not on our side.

  44. mg Says:

Reminds me of Dangerfield with the dangling arm in caddie shack

  45. Goatfarmer Says:

Jimmy Garropolo, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Crackcorn, doesn’t matter.

    Toad. Blowes. Out. His. Bowels.

    On us fans

  46. BA’s Red Pen Says:

No thanks, dude can’t stay on the field.

  47. Warrenfb12 Says:

Pass. Total waste of time. He’s hurt 24/7. I would rather have Blaine starting.

  48. Esteban85 Says:

This is either a spin the roulette wheel kinda article or a simple dartboard approach. (From CBS, not the Joes)
Gotta be kidding me. Beef up the lines and find some more speed edge rushers. We don’t need an expensive fabregé egg at QB. We need a young, hungry, intelligent, tough and most importantly cheapish QB.

  49. Oddball Says:

“You’re gonna go with that MF’er”

  50. AnonymousBuc76 Says:

    Please No…

    Is Gino Smith available?
He’s better that Mental midget Derek Carr and Mr. Glass Jimmy Garrapalo…

  51. Mike Johnson Says:

I’d take Brissett over Jimmy G. And Brissett will not break our bank either. I think he is better than Trask and our other backup.

  52. Tucker Says:

Jimmy g isnt good but he isn’t the worst quarterback either but he can’t stay healthy enough for it to matter either way.

  53. FrontFour Says:

How delusional is Joe talking about a Super Bowl run. Good lord.

  54. lambchop Says:

GQ will quit on his team with a hang nail. NO. Edelman has said as much. The guy is not a warrior. He plays with 0 pride.

  55. Nate Says:

    Rodgers or bust!!

  56. Bucky23 Says:

    EI EI EIU!

  57. Cobraboy Says:

    Hendon Hooker.

  58. Delusional Intelligence Says:

So if Jimmy GQ can stay healthy, yeah, he’s much better (and probably cheaper) than Derek Carr.

Not sure I would go with MUCH better. Derek Carr does have 2 or 3 Pro Bowls to his name. Jimmy GQ, I believe has none. Was he healthy enough for a Pro Bowl?

  59. Brazen Zebra Says:

Jimmy G? Nah! Carr? Nope! The best bet for the Bucs is to call Terry Bradshaw or Joe Montana and see if they want to unretire. If that fails, then call Chucky and say, “Hey Jon! Wanna coaching job? You can choose your own QB.”

  60. Ed Says:

People don’t understand, the Bucs need to build back winning culture. Jimmy G is the only one of the free agents that has played on Super Bowl teams under some of the best coaches. The Bucs would be lucky to have winning experience instead of signing a FA quarterback that hasn’t been part of a successful team.

True, his injury history is concerning. Jason Licht would need to put some large incentives in his contract based on games started.

Paying too much upfront money to players that have a history of injury is stupid when you don’t have the extra salary cap.

If he would be willing to sign a “prove it deal” like some other past Buc players then yeah, sign him up. At least he gives them a chance to win.

  61. Lakeland Steve Says:

Jimmy G is made of Porcelain. So let’s spend 10’s of millions of dollars to get a guy who may not make it out of the preseason?
