Carson Wentz And The Bucs

February 28th, 2023

Are the Bucs open to Carson Wentz?

So the NFL quarterback Wheel of Fortune is spinning quite quickly.

There’s Derek Carr shopping himself. Proven playoff winner Jimmy GQ is there for the taking. Geno Smith is still a free agent. And now you can add another quarterback with playoff experience to the market.

Yesterday, WTF decided to turn loose Carson Wentz. Joe isn’t seeing the market for him.

Rumors are swirling through Indianapolis, home of the combine, that the Bucs may be adding or at least looking to add a veteran quarterback to push Kyle Trask. Or at least to give Trask the appearance of competition.

Here may be the most important factor about Wentz possibly being on the Bucs’ radar: He is sure to come cheap.

Wentz was dropped from his third NFL team in as many years yesterday. So he seems done as a starting quarterback.

The Bucs, you may have heard, are in salary cap hell. They have little spare Team Glazer loot to get a proven quarterback. So that means if the Bucs want a veteran quarterback, they may have to go the cheap route.

Enter Wentz.

Hey, say what you will about Wentz. But Joe would take him over scatterbrain Drew Lock.

Todd bowels flushed our Super Bowl winning no risk it no biscuit offense down the toilet

  2. Goatfarmer Says:

I agree with Jack Clark. And I’d rather have Goobert than Wintz.

  3. UKBuccaneer Says:

If Wentz is brought in, he’ll beat out Trask in a heartbeat. In a soft division, he could lead the team to the playoffs. He could allow us to balance the books somewhat without crapping the bed every Sunday afternoon.

  4. David Says:

    Trask.
Get rid of some vets, trade down to gather draft picks, go with Trask for one year to see what you have. If he works out, then the year after you’re in a much better position to start building.
If he doesn’t, draft a franchise quarterback in 2024.
Why does anyone want to re-hash some of these quarterbacks that never worked out somewhere else? Makes no sense.

  5. Bucco Bruce Says:

No way in hell let that bum Wentz in this building. He’s made enough money off dumb desperate teams don’t make the bucs the next one.

  6. UKBuccaneer Says:

Lots of folks seem to think that tanking a year and picking up a franchise QB is a done deal.
    That worked well with Jameis.

  7. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Wentz was drafted in 2016, is 30 years old, often injured, and had one great season out of 7 as a starting QB on 3 different teams, with inconsistent play at best in the other six seasons, and very mediocre play at worst. Drew Lock was drafted in 2019, is 26, and only had one full season as a 2nd year player to be the full time starter for a bad offense. I’d much rather take my chances on Drew Lock turning it around with Canales on a better offense than on Wentz trying to become good again on his 4th NFL team.

  8. Leopold Stotch Says:

Dear lord absolutely not. Now I don’t necessarily feel bad, but I definitely understand and empathize him. Ever since his acl tear, he just hasn’t been good. I mean imagine you’re about to be mvp and then get injured. Your backup comes in, wins the superbowl (the franchise’s 1st) and he gets a statue of him built in front of the building. It’s affected him mentally to the point where he presses and he just isn’t good anymore.

On top of the mental aspect, he’s 30 and injury prone like Jimmy G. I say Drew “Idiot that dumps Gracie Hunt” Lock, a vet or draftee that’s cheap to compete with Trask. I’m rooting for Trask to succeed, but competition brings out the best. And I’m with Joe on the aspect, why pay to tank/suck. Don’t get an expensive FA to lose if that’s the plan.

  9. Iamabuc Says:

Why Joe keeps bringing up all this QB scrubs and not mentioning Baker Mayfield (who is better than the rest out there); is beyond me.

  10. Delusional Intelligence Says:

I think I would prefer talking Fritzpatrick out of retirement, before I let Wentz poison our locker room.

    ,,,,,,,,,,,,

    Lol another Clairvoyant!
Carson wentz was given every opportunity to succeed at, lol North Dakota St., and he only threw for 45 TDs in FOUR yrs.
    Do you even lift bro?
Are you kidding me? Dude has had EVERY opportunity Including being overdrafted! And you are so Myopic that a guy who had his Best season in college playing an All SEC schedule?
Yup, If you are the brightest bulb in your house then……

  12. Peskajumba Says:

Tampa, do not sign Carson Wentz. Don’t do that to us. I don’t care what his actual role would be. Stop being an embarrassing pile of hell.

  13. steele Says:

Joe, every QB free agent and every one of these failed veterans such as Wentz are “shopping themselves” and will be available, and some cheap. So what. Please, must you do a writeup on every single tired name (except the most interesting and relevant ones)?

Correction, please, Joe. Jimmy GQ is NOT a “proven playoff winner”. He is a playoff and Super Bowl LOSER of monumental proportions. Jittery G. The only QB in history to specialize in Three Stooges comedy the closer pass rushers get to him. The only QB to do Steph Curry set shots with footballs, and spin footballs like Frisbees to the waiting arms of cornerbacks. Guaranteed to crack when it counts.

You do not want the “big names” on the list, such as Jittery G or Carr or Wentz or Dalton, to saddle the roster with baggage that further delays the rebuild that is overdue. But who the hell knows what Bowles and Junior Canales want, especially if they are delusional enough to think this is a Super Bowl contender.

It should be Trask’s job to lose, and failing him, then a youth or young veteran with upside.

  14. HC Grover Says:

    No

  15. Rand Says:

He made 27 million with Washington

not here ..I’d rather go with an A. J. McCarron or Cooper Rush than the overpriced Wentz

  16. BucsfanFred Says:

Wentz isn’t going to be any better than any of the other bottom tier free agents. He’s just another swingin’ pecker.

  17. BucsfanFred Says:

    I like Cooper Rush too.

  18. BucBoy Says:

Joe’s daily dose of “Look, a squirrel!”

  19. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Silly.
    Just silly.

  20. PewterStiffArm Says:

I would offer a contract to Josh Freeman before I would allow Carson Wentz anywhere near N. Dale Mabry. That means one good hit on Trask and enter Mr. Irrelevant, no thanks. His playing days are shot, ride the pine baby, ride that pine.

  21. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

No need bring in a young guy screw that

  22. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Wentz is garbage.

  23. gotbbucs Says:

I knew this article would get posted the second I saw Wentz get released, but I hoped the brain trust a JBF was smart enough not to actually encourage and endorse the signing of Wentz. I was wrong, big surprise.

Joe sees a name he recognizes and immediately goes from six to midnight, every time, no matter how stupid the idea may be.

  24. EEK Says:

Everyone loves a good redemption story

Wentz seems radioactive at this point

I can’t see him signing on as anything but a backup anywhere at this point

  25. Knucknbuc Says:

Wentz sucks I’d rather drew lock. Joe doesn’t like him because he dumped some bimbo blondie that he’s infatuated with. Who cares? Maybe it was for good reason. I can tell he never had a bad one

  26. Aceofaerospace Says:

I’m all in on Wentz. He’ll get benched and again, for the third time, his backup will take over and go to a superbowl. LOL.

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

Wentz reminds me of Jay-miss. All kinds of physical talent but nothing between the ears! He’s also “toxic” from what I’ve read on him.
We don’t need players that are going to ruin a culture and locker room. For me, it’s a solid NO to Wentz at ANY price.

  28. Bojim Says:

Re-sign Gabbert and let him and Trask battle it out. Don’t think Bowles wants that.

  29. NEfans Says:

If any of you watched him on Hard Knocks, he has to be the most irritating teammate in the locker room. He’s like Opey Taylor in Mayberry RFD.

  30. jimm Says:

go with 3 or 4 young qb competition …
trask , huntley, rush, herdon (3rd or later draft) or later draft pick (dugan or stetson bennet) … save $ and trying to build for future. compete for south.

  31. Rob Says:

Since Johnny Mazel articles generated a billion clicks, Joe can’t resist linking the Bucs to QB’s who are guaranteed to get readers all riled up in a bad way.

  32. SlyPirate Says:

He was a locker cancer (as I understand it) at all three of his last gigs.

No thanks … at any price.

  33. ElioT Says:

    Please god… NO!!!!!

  34. Goatfarmer Says:

Cooper Rush is a damn good idea.

  35. Mike Johnson Says:

Thanks for the comic relief here Joe. Carson Wentz? Man, somebody is on drugs. Thats like saying we are bringing in Baker Mayfield. Whew..I can’t stop laughing.

  36. Zoocomics Says:

    @UKBuccaneer

You are correct. Historically, tanking doesn’t work. Especially for the first pick in the draft. Most fans don’t get that. Fun fact, last number 1 overall pick to win a Super Bowl, and not with the team that drafted him? Matthew Stafford… before that? Eli Manning.

Tanking doesn’t work. It’s just a miserable product to watch on the field hoping that it pays off.

  37. unbelievable Says:

    No. No. NO.

  38. Craig Says:

We already saw a version of what Wentz can do, his name was Jameis.

No retread QBs, please, except maybe Gabbert, because he will be inexpensive.

  39. Canabuc Says:

No, Just no. He apparently was. a bad locker room guy in Indy.
He is just not that good. Would rather see what we have in Trask or go after Brisset who is safe not sexy but performs.

  40. Rod Munch Says:

I’d rather have Wentz than any other of those FA QBs, at least you got someone who isn’t afraid to throw the ball and has had a very high level of success. Why he’s fallen off the face of the earth, I don’t know, but assuming it’s not something like a drug habit (ie Fat Josh Freeman), maybe it can be fixed. This would easily be the most talented offense he’s had around him, including the Eagles SB team. Finally, I don’t believe he’d be expensive.

If you want some real fun, bring in Wentz and Winston. To me, they’re very similar players, and you’d have an unbelievable level of talent dueling it out. Oh, and you’d have Trask out there throwing cupcake rainbow passes, which would be cute.

As for those saying he’s a bad locker room guy… this is a veteran team with veteran WRs, a veteran offensive line, etc. They’ll keep him in check.

This, to me, would be a nice low risk move as he’s not expensive, and if he’s a flake you just cut him.

    ———–

So we’d have one of the best offenses in football again, something fun to watch? I’ll take that 10 out of 10 times if you’re not going to have Brady as an option.

Also the fact you actually don’t throw-up in your mouth at the idea of Gabbert coming back, wow, you’re mentally ill.

  42. Browsing from DC Says:

If they want a veteran from WFT or WTF, screw Wentz and go after Taylor Heineke. Younger, healthier and has some fire in his gut. He’d be a bargain backup and could pressure Trask in camp as well. The kid gave us a run for our money on our SB run in ’20.

  43. firethecannons Says:

No thanks and gtfoh not worth a bag of stale chips

  44. T V Says:

Wentz is trash. Colts speak poorly of him. Can’t make it work in Washington? C’mon. Ride off into the sunset Mr Wentz. Bucs should re-sign Blain Gabbert and Ryan Griffin. Perhaps another QB for the practice squad. Preferably an athletic one that moves around for practice as a scout team QB.

  45. Robert Says:

Everyone is an expert. If the Bucs took on Wentz, he’d be the best quarterback they’d have. Relax.

  46. Gregory Leonard Says:

He showed his lack of heart and had zero desire to compete when Philly drafted Hurtz. Total baby. He’s a loser and I wouldn’t have him as a janitor on my team.

  47. TBfan Says:

Tom you tired of the snoring reality yet? No…ok see you in june😂

  48. kingoftheheavies Says:
