Shaun King: Tom Brady Is Done So Start The Rebuild Now

January 26th, 2023

Wants a rebuild.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles said in his season-ending press conference that you never want to rebuild. A former Bucs quarterback believes Bowles needs to reassess.

Shaun King, one of only four quarterbacks to lead the Bucs to the NFC Championship game, said in a recent article typed by Kyle Odegard in Compare.bet that the Bucs have no shot at returning to the Super Bowl.

So in King’s mind, the Bucs need to wave goodbye to Brady and start shopping just about any player that can bring back draft picks.

“This group’s Super Bowl window, in my opinion, has closed,” King said. “I would start evaluating what pieces do we have where we can get the most back?

“I would start stripping this roster down of some of my higher-priced guys that I think still have value, and I would start my rebuild now.”

King said the rebuild begins with being real about Tom Brady. The Bucs should explain they believe his time is over.

“Let’s be honest, man,” King said. “Why does everybody beat around the bush? Tom Brady is the most accomplished quarterback at the professional level we’ve ever seen, and nobody in modern football is getting to 10 Super Bowls, and they’re definitely not winning seven.

“In spite of that, you still should be honest about what he is now. He’s a shell of himself. Especially when he’s encountered with pressure.

“It happens, man. You get old. You step off the sidewalk and you feel like you jumped off a ten-story building. It happens to everybody. It’s just a part of getting old. Yeah, in spurts he can still make some throws, and, yeah, every second or third game he can have a fourth quarter that makes you remember how great he was.

“But from start to finish, he’s not the same player. Age is undefeated. If you watch Tom Brady play, when he is under pressure and duress, he is completely out of whack. That’s just the reality of it.”

King, a native of St. Petersburg, said that at Brady’s age, in his mid-40s, he simply cannot handle pressure like he once did. That’s not hate, King added, that’s just being real.

“It’s not a criticism,” King said. “The truth doesn’t have emotions. It’s just the truth.”

Of course, the real reason to keep Brady is clear: Brady means money. Lots and lots and lots of money. And who do you think would be better, old man Brady or Kyle Trask?

Bowles is likely very much against a rebuild. He had a losing record with Brady, and the only coach Team Glazer hasn’t run after two straight losing seasons happened to be the first coach to win them a Super Bowl, Chucky.

So you figure Bowles, even though the Bucs won a garbage division, likely will begin 2023 on the hot seat. So that’s why he’s so against a rebuild.

Look, Joe has made it clear if the Bucs want to launch Operation Tank, Joe is fully behind that in order to #CollaspeForCaleb.

The trick with drafting Caleb Williams or Drake Maye next spring, Joe simply doesn’t trust Bowles to develop these guys. Already Bowles is 0-2 with quarterbacks drafted in the first or second round.

You know the saying…..”Opinions are like a55holes…..”…….in Shaun King’s case…..he has a very large one with a permanent Whopper stuck in it.

  2. ClwJB Says:

All of this makes me believe the HC didn’t get run for a very specific reason

If he succeeds, and we improve, great

More likely, he face plants. Then we have cleared our cap issues and have top of the round draft capital for a new regime to rebuild with

Can the marketing department use “Hedging our bets” as the team slogan for ‘23?

  3. Aceofaerospace Says:

I want Brady to make that call. No one else. You don’t tank until you’re mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. If you plan to tank all season, tickets should be free. Period.

  4. Sinking Ship Says:

Anyone look at our opponents next year? Lol. We are toast.

The rebuild won’t be a choice.

A rebuild will be imposed on our squad by a league that is passing us by on scheme and brains.

But in 17/18 years, watch out. That is our orbit. Check the tape.

  5. mark2001 Says:

Man, I hate to agree with Shaun King. But yeah, the rebuild needs to start now. I would add the house cleaning needs to go higher.

  6. lambchop Says:

Bruh, Brady had 3/5 new OL. These people writing him off will never learn.

  7. NEfan Says:

Shaun King another wannabe relevant EX-Qb. Ask him how he would have done if Dunn & Alstot averaged 3.2 yds per carry all season. He’d be bagging groceries at the Piggly Wiggly. All you doubters open your eyes, the Bucs could NOT run the ball!!! When they did the O clicked. It is going to be my pleasure visiting this site reading the whines and cries to can Bowels after game 2. I visit again when whatever team Brady lands on is 6-0. Rita, take your teeth out and you know what!!

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Shaun King … “It’s not a criticism. The truth doesn’t have emotions. It’s just the truth.”

Great quote Shaun. But the ‘truth’ in your eyes is probably quite different from the ‘truth’ in Tom Brady’s eyes.

  9. NEfan Says:

DR, the stats guy. How did the 31st & 30th poorest rushing attack do this season?

  10. SB~LV Says:

    Ya think !!!
    46 year old
    Rebuild aggressively
Trade anyone on the roster if the return is worth it for the future

  11. Gofortheface30 Says:

Shaun King is being objective, and taking an honest analytical/realistic approach. And yet (unsurprisingly) the very first comment I see is hurt feelings. Desperately trying to hold on to something because of recent nostalgia and emotions is pathetic. And a fools errand because it’s the proverbial “cutting body despite face.” Holding on to a slow, aging team THAT IS GOING NOWHERE, not only further compromises the teams future but provides false hope for those desperately trying to hang on. It’s right there in plain sight for a lot of you, and you refuse to accept reality. Sad. Hope none of you are business owners

  12. ModHairKen Says:

Shaun King. Ian Beckles. Chris Simms.

All failed players. All journeymen. All limited intellect.

But Joe keeps quoting them and citing their thin resumes.

  13. NEfan Says:

DR, here is the answer 32. BUCS, 31. Houston, 30 Chargers ( are they blaming Hebert and suggesting he retire?) Bucs the only one to make the PO’s. No RUN NO WIN!!!

  14. Knucknbuc Says:

I mean he’s not wrong. I usually don’t agree with king at all but to rely on 46 year old Tom Brady next year then be stuck in the same place a year from now is dumb on sooo many levels

  15. Sean Says:

Brady had the most passing attempts and completions in NFL history this season. He threw for 4700 with a 67% accuracy. Yep, a shell. He’s like Peyton Manning in 2015! LOL! What a joke. It you believe he’s a shell of his former self, you should not be allowed to procreate and spread your obviously low IQ.

  16. CoryC Says:

NEfan, how’d the Chargers do in the playoffs, genius? They couldn’t run the ball and couldn’t hold a lead. You don’t even argue in a fair, intelligent way. You’re just a Brady cultist.

  17. SB~LV Says:

Watch the QB’s this weekend and try and remember what reminds you of Tommy Boy
Oh BTW … Brady was NOT planning on playing for the Bucs this year so he has already set the rebuilding back two years by the time the season starts in the fall of 2023
    MoveOn.Bucs !
Every player should be on the trading block for the right compensation!

  18. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Joe, you’re assuming Bowles would be around for the next QB drafted. I don’t think that would be the case. King is right. Time to shed some overpaid, old and slow players. Adopt the patriots mindset of getting rid of players early instead of late, get younger players and draft wisely.

  19. SB~LV Says:

    Sean
Leading the league in passing attempts and only winning 8 games
    Is nothing to brag about.
46 years old trying to play NFL football…. Laughable!
    MoveOn.Bucs
Fire Bowles , he is being used as a patsy placeholder for the next HC

  20. Duane Says:

This team has not had a solid running game since the muscle hamster, and even when we recently won the SB, we were not a good running team. Its a passing league, we had The Goat, and he still couldnt score points. Sideshow Brady has run his course.

  21. Old black man Says:

    Screw Brady!

  22. JN Says:

Regardless of what you think of SK the guys is spot on. Couldn’t agree more with everything he said. Then again, if the Bucs were to begin a rebuild, blow up the roster, dump salary, etc. I do NOT trust Bowles. Keeping Bowles means that this organization feels they can win the division again and make playoffs. I’ll bet the farm that next season will be a disaster and that will commence the rebuild… 2 years too late because in hindsight, it should have happened 1 year ago.

  23. Bucs56 Says:

King is clueless. First tom stats shows he is not finished. Comments about him taking sacks instead of extending plays is dumb. Tom never extended plays outside the pocket and protects the football.

2nd you can’t rebuild from nothing so the idea of trading everybody is also a dumb. You want a rookie to be successful you need a line and some weapons. You also need a coach other then Todd Bowles.

Bucs roster is relative. Outside of Detroit, dallas, phile and San Fran there is a lot of parity in terms of talent. Brian daboll probably wins a nfc championship with this roster.

  24. Joe Says:

Joe, you’re assuming Bowles would be around for the next QB drafted. I don’t think that would be the case.

Joe has stated on multiple platforms Joe doesn’t trust Todd Bowels grooming a quarterback drafted high in the first-round.

  25. NEfan Says:

Corey, I have NO idea what you’re talking about. I gave you the comparison of the three lowest rushing teams in the league and the Chargers with Ekler was far better. My point is all 3 teams are home now.

SB~LV, you sound like oneilsuckyall about age. The guy threw almost 900 passes this year, not exactly a deteriorating arm. Same completion rate as Mahomes and better than Allen. Nevertheless, I agree the save the losing franchise experiment is over and Brady no longer fits in Tampa. The fact that the Bucs kept Bowels shows Tampa has excepted its losing role.

Duane, you’re just an idiot hater. Raven 2nd in the league should have knocked off Bengals and would have if wuss Jackson played. Eagles are 5th, 9ers 7th, Giants 4th, Dallas 8th, Bill’s 9th, Jags 14th, KC 20th lmost 700 yds more than Bucs. The only team Cincy at 29. Even Cincy has over 200 more yard than Bucs at #29. Cincy ran all over the Bill’s last week. You need a running game to win.

  26. WillieG Says:

Brady isn’t done. He will bounce back next year and be an MVP candidate. King, on the other hand, was done when he threw his first pass. It looked like he was trying to throw an anvil.

  27. Goatfarmer Says:

Fatboy Burger King – shut the hell up and eat another triple cheeseburger. You were a lazy quarterback who never worked hard at anything and you were washed when you were 26. The last player your fat azz should be making comments about is Brady.

  28. cside dave Says:

Sad to admit but I agree with Shaun on this one. I have watched TB warm up every home game and he throws a flawless deep and intermediate ball except when under pressure. Unfortunately he is under pressure most of the time and he seems to be flustered by it. He is jittery and off target and has missed a lot of easy throws. His interception when trying to throw the ball out of the end zone against the Cowboys was bizarre. Our line was not the best but wasn’t horrible in pass protection this year. Teams know to rush hard, press cover and put the safetys up so the routes won’t have time to develop.

2020 was a perfect storm with a much more talented roster with many key additions willing to come here at very low cost. We had a rock solid wall of protection, Gronk as the perfect companion and Brown as an incredible route runner. We got our Super Bowl and another very good season in 2021. It was fun, totally worth it but it’s time for the long painful rebuild.

  29. stpetebucfan Says:

LMAO. This thread like many are the PERFECT example of not liking the message and so shoot the messenger. Da Nile is not just a river in Egypt!

“Bruh, Brady had 3/5 new OL.” An OL which sucked at run blocking but gave up the sixth fewest number of sacks in the entire league. Players like Joe Burrow were sacked almost 3x more frequently than Brady.

Hey it’s a sports blog designed for debate and YMMV but largely here we’re still talking opinions and not facts.

Bottom line if we’re all honest. The Bucs did not WIN the Central, the other three teams LOST it. There is a difference even if it didn’t effect the playoffs.

  30. NEfan Says:

stp@ couldn’t you say the same about the Jags and Ravens?

  31. LastDance Says:

You and me both NE. I cant wait to come back here next year and just give these fools h3ll when Brady is rolling with a running game and a real play caller and coach who doesn’t play to not lose.

Sean… couldn’t have said it better myself!

out of 32 teams, TB is the team I want him to play on next year the least. Plus, I wanna watch ya’ll rebuild over and over for the next decade… It will be what I do for a laugh…

  32. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Wow I said the same thing and got ripped !!! Evans, both Shaqs, Carlton Davis, D White, Jensen, 76, Lenny, Gage, and Brate. Let them enjoy the rest of their careers with non rebuilds and get as much draft capital as possible because the quicker the rebuild the quicker this team becomes competitive again. Just praying it doesn’t take 10 years like last time.

  33. Your Mom Says:

lol Shaun King is only 2 months older than Brady

  34. Iamrhenry Says:

Bowels nor the GM are going to tank because they know once they did, they would be gone before said draft.

  35. LastDance Says:

Funny… even if Brady were done… and he’s not, just like 2019, no one anywhere talks about what a f**king crazy thing he has done at 43, 44, 45. Everyone just wants him to get old and fail so they will grab at anything to be right. He does need some help to get back to the top of the mountain… but so does everyone else. Josh Allen has never gotten there, Lamar hasn’t, Herbert hasn’t, Rodgers has once a thousand years ago, Burrow hasn’t yet, Russ can’t find his own AHole anymore. Brady has more Super Bowl wins than every other QB still playing put together. You think that experience is worthless and you are WRONG! You all act like being young and running around wins championships. Having a good coach and a confident team that plays together and for one another wins games. Brady has always said that. And its always been true. Ill bet everyone of you were with the falling off a cliff crowd in 16, 17, 18, 19 until he came here. Have some appreciation man. When TF do you think you will ever see this again… The answer is never and you are too up your own azzes to recognize it.

  36. JBBucs_06 Says:

While Brady CAN still be elite, King is right about how he handles/faces pressure. TB12 is limited on avoiding ANY pressure and will not stare down an LB lined up to take a shot in order to deliver a great ball in a tight window (more than perhaps once per game). I don’t blame him. Nor will TB12 scramble regularly for short first down pickups, he can’t.

TB12 was abused Week 1-4 of this past season with Luke “not Skywalker” Goedeke at LG. THAT set the tone. No Jensen, No Marpet meant a severely impacted TB12 AND he still finished with tons of passing yds….BUT that was also due to a non-existent running game. We had NO choice. So he can still sling it, but he needs a perfect Oline situation to do it. We don’t have that anymore.

  37. gofortheface30 Says:

Sean, you defaulting to lowest common denominator by referencing stats – then talking about IQ in the same breath is the epitome of irony. Not hard to look up stats. Perhaps you need to enlighten your brain to the word nuance. Know it, live it, use it in a sentence. You really think pass attempts for example is analogous to his impact? lol wow. Thats cute. Then other brain dead comments I read – such as those of us allegedly referencing his escapability as some sort of hindrance. No. that is factually wrong, and you’re smudging the message to fit your narrative. Actually – That would be giving some of you too much credit. Arm strength is merely scratching the surface of ones ability to play. No one has questioned his arm strength for F sake. It is his willingness to stand in the pocket for that extra half second to MAKE THE THROWS THAT ARE THERE. They WAY he was dirting balls, and the WAY he was throwing it away was embarrassing and wreckless. THAT is where he has slipped a ton. Everything needs to be pristine and perfect for him to thrive, and that is not realistic. Get that through your thick gd skulls

  38. Alanbucsfan Says:

I remember the Joes or a Joe writing about Brady playing until he’s 50 last year.
Now, the idea is to tank for a QB who couldn’t beat Utah in 2 games last year.
Tanking is never a good idea- the Steelers never tank and they are always a competitive team. QB’s like Brady don’t just show up- he’s still good enough to win a Championship and Bucs should go for it if he still wants to play

  39. HC Grover Says:

LOL a rebuild includes the coach. I agree with King. This team has self destructed top down starting with Bozo.

  40. gofortheface30 Says:

lol @ some of you and your weird PTSD. Stop believing in superstition ladies. Its unbecoming and not very manly. Just because the bucs were in a drought before 2020 should never be indicative of what bodes for the future. Have a little confidence for crying out loud. What happened to this whole building a culture narrative that Brady was supposed to bring? Gee no one seemingly wants to talk about culture any more huh.But no, some of you are scared of your own shadoy, and scared of what tomorrow brings, so you want to hang on to a team that will go 8-9. Some of you are so weird. I wonder if that apathy, and mediocre mindset shows up in your paychecks.

  41. 80forBrady Says:

    He’s right.

55 million in cap hell. Everyone a year older and a year slower. A new OC will take time to jell with the teama and surely ATL, CAR and NO can’t be as bad next year (remember 2022 for was a big cap hit year for NO and CAR, just lke 2023 wil be for the Bucs).

I think the Bucs could manage to repeat to 8 wins whether with Brady or Gabbert/Trask but (a) it might not be enough to get into the playoffs with the other divisional teams improving (b) even if enough it will likely be another 1 and done in the playoffs

  42. sasquatch Says:

King is right that our Superbowl window is closed. However, I don’t agree about his rebuild idea of trading away any high priced veteran with value. These is no reason for a strip to the bones rebuild. And I am disgusted by 3K3mper’s ongoing call for a #Collapse4SomeRandomCollegeKid.

    Reset, reload, play to win.

  43. LastDance Says:

hey go… lay off Sean because you are again looking at it from only one perspective. Pass attempts is either A) a team that buys into their strength and uses the passing game to control the game and impose their will or B) a team that cannot run or play cohesively and is constantly forced to play from behind. The coaches had them ill prepared to play a 60 minute game week in and week out so they were clearly the latter. Also, he darted balls more in the first half of the year to avoid INTs in the second half of the year he took more chances, had more TDs, but also more INTs. And who the F are you to complain that someone isn’t standing in the pocket to take a hit. BLOCK. You see what happens when QBs take hits… Tua, Lamar, Hurts, Mahomes will be limited this week and it may cost them the big game. Brady knows he has to be on the field so he does what he has to do. Good coaches scheme games to fit their players strengths. These coaches stuck their head in the sand and hoped for the best. By the way, some stats for you jack: worst rushing attack… almost worst in merged league history, 2nd most drops, most tight window throws, threw into coverage (7+) most. If you think anyone else would look good in that offense you are the one who is reckless. I guess Allen is washed too. He looked like trash the las 6 weeks… Herbert and Brady were almost identical in stats and play this year (yes I watched both) and no one is crying that he is over the hill. Also he got crushed by standing and taking hits and it cost them earlier in the year.

  44. LastDance Says:

I think Ive been edited… so lets try again. Funny… even if Brady were done… and he’s not, just like 2019, no one anywhere talks about what a crazy thing he has done at 43, 44, 45. Everyone just wants him to get old and fail so they will grab at anything to be right. He does need some help to get back to the top of the mountain… but so does everyone else. 45. Buc4evr Says:

Even if Brady comes back, there is no way this team can support him. Too many holes that won’t be filled anytime soon. The window of opportunity has closed with these old, slow, injury prone veterans. Bringing Brady back will only prolong the agony and add to the Cap hell. Time to rebuild starting with the HC.

Stats have shown his wr’s are one of the worst in the league at getting separation, 1st in dropped balls and oline bottom 5, so where is that 1/2 second coming from? Dchbg, stop ignoring the facts. I would say 10 years with Brady and Chucky.

Most of the extended elite teams went through growing pains. Eventually they seem to turn a corner. We could be at that corner.

At some point in time Father Time catches up to everyone and wins.

    Father Time is undefeated.

Could TB12 have one more great year in him if he has an amazing OLINE, skill players and defense, sure he could.

Could TB12 have an awful year and lose to Father Time even with an amazing team to support him, sure he could.

It’s a gamble either way, with many people who are in the insurance game telling you that the probability of Father Time winning is much higher than TB22 defeating him for another year at 46 years old. Anybody saying that TB12 is going to be great 100 percent guaranteed for the Bucs or any other team next year is not dealing in reality.

  64. BelleGladeBuc Says:

TB12 needs to look up Muhammad Ali.

Ali should have stopped fighting after the defeating Spinks in 1978 in the Super Dome to regain his title.

Ali challenged Father Time after that bout and fought and was destroyed by a much younger, stronger and faster Larry Holmes absolutely destroyed Ali. Everybody who watched it will tell you how much of a beat down Ali received from Holmes. It wasn’t fair.

    There’s a lesson there.

  65. NEfan Says:

Bucaneer@ your intentions started out good. Lol. If anyone cares to know, I am white with very few prejudices, though the mainstream media would like you all to think differently. Where I live racism isn’t prominent or at least my family and I are not aware of it in my circle of family & friends, yet I am not that naive to believe it doesn’t exist. My kids late 20’s early 30’s don’t seem to relate to the thought of racism. My biggest frustration is the wedge the politicians and media have driven between races and rages the inferno for their own agendas. Some of the comments on this site from both black and white posters make me shake my head cause it must suck living with those internal feelings. Ouch!

  66. Old black man Says:

Banzai… I get what you’re saying and all, but he’s white. BUT I DON’T HATE the guy. I’m sure EVERYONE on this site are decent human beings. I didn’t disrespect his family or his loved ones or anything like that. We can roast each other respectfully with a little bit of history to back it up. 67. Bucamania Says:

Brady is gone and Bowles is HC. The window is closed for this group. Pretty obvious.

Time to rebuild is right. Trade away anyone with value not named Wirfs or Winfield.

You HAVE to build through the draft.

  68. BelleGladeBuc Says:

Saying that a QB who started in an NFC Championship Game for the Bucs like Shaun King and who was a Bert Emanuel catch away from QBing in the Super Bowl was never relevant seems foolish.

For the Bucs, Shaun King was certainly relevant for the 2000 Season playoff run to the NFL Championship Game against the Rams as their starting QB, and as the 2001 starting QB who led them to the playoffs with a winning record.

He also was a backup QB on the 2002 Super Bowl Championship Team, and in the game against Carolina came in for an injured Brad Johnson and Rob Johnson and led us on a game winning field goal drive, and tgat win tied us with Green Bay in records that year at 12-4, and so the Bucs got the 2nd seed and the bye instead of the Packers which set them up for their Super Bowl run.

Tony Dungy and Phil Simms also respect Shaun King and his takes on football, but what does a Super Bowl winning HOF Coach and Super Bowl MVP winning QB know, right? SMH

And now for Gary Hogeboom’s take…

Not having read all of the comments (67) I will say this. My first reaction is that no franchise wants to go through a rebuild. If Brady does not come back then you’d think rebuilding is automatic. A “mere ” reload without Brady would mean that the Bucs think they can find an adequate or better QB this offseason. Thus we will be able to make another playoff run after the 2023 season.

Belle@ I also had to look him up on Wikapedia. You could have just cut.& paste ya know.

BelleGladeBuc – you said all year the problem was the line… now you are out there with King saying father times ready for the knockout. Agree that Ali should have stepped away for his health. Maybe Brady should too. But, I dont see only minimal diminishing physical traits. He was h3lla emotionally stressed this year, had the worst coaching staff outside of only a couple teams and by far the worst of his career. No run game, throwing into the most coverage, to receivers (except Godwin) who dont read a defense like TB12 does. I see a repeat of 2019 and the same potential for a coup again next year with a better offensively coached team. The only thing that may have regressed is his fear of getting hit. He always has given himself up more than anyone in history. I think with a coach that runs to his strengths, a line he trusts and that plays as a unit, he will not need to be a hero on EVERY series to move the ball. Are you suggesting that if he were on the eagles, 49ers, Bengals, or Chiefs they wounldnt be right where they are this week. I call total and complete bulls!!T on that.

  74. NEfan Says:

LastDance, agree 100% except maybe the Chiefs. That’s a unique situation, Mahomes makes the wr’s look good. I doubt Kelce is Kelce if he’s playing with someone else. Mahomes strength is extending the play allowing receivers to get open
    The other teams 100%.

  75. Boodidley Says:

NE. I don’t question that Mahoney is special… but I would propose that Reid is really the reason they are so good. With a backup they have won or stayed in playoff games multiple times. That’s a well coached team.

  76. m Says:

why did they keep showing the Cowboys brain trust while the bucs we’re getting whipped? they way out coached us… i agree with king start the rebuild and trask is not the answer. at least without Brady we can focus on the run game. we need a conservative qb that does not turn the ball over and can make plays with his feet

  77. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Last Dance

The line was the biggest problem for the Bucs this season.

I did say that and stand by it.

Secondly, I agree that TB12 could have taken a loaded team this year for a deep playoff run.

Ali defeated Spinks at the later parts of his career at the age of 36 to regain his Heavyweight Title for the last time.

Two years later, at the age of 38, in his title defense against Larry Holmes he was destroyed. Those of us who watched the bout were sickened by the beat down that Larry Holmes dispensed on Ali as the TV announcer was begging for the fight to be stopped.

    That happened.

The future for an older athlete who is well past their prime like Ali or or TB12 is extremely uncertain. Father Time is much closer to winning against them as they are in the twilight of their careers. Those are just facts.

From personal experience with Ali, it’s horrible to see your heroes shamed, destroyed, a shell of their former great self and ultimately humiliated.

Brett Favre, the Iron Man of Football, took the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game in the twilight of his career, and the very next year he was a horrible QB for a losing Vikings team.

That reality happened to Ali and Favre, and it very well could happen to TB12 in his uncertain future as he ages one more year.

To say otherwise reveals a complete lack of sports history when it comes to older athletes and an understanding of human biology as we age.

    @NEfan

I’m a Bucs fan. Shaun King was a Kurt Warner to Ricky Proehl with Brian Kelly covering him perfectly (but Warner made a better throw) TD away from winning the game 6-5 and going to the Super Bowl with the greatest football broadcasters of all time in Pat Summeral and John Madden calling the game. Brian Kelly knows exactly how your Pats great Rodney Harrison feels about playing defensive coverage perfectly, but still giving up the catch.

Remember it like it was yesterday.

  79. LastDance Says:

BelleGladeBuc – I was young but remember Ali very well. He was my dads favorite so he was mine too. And I certainly remember Favre. Im not saying he cant get hurt or look bad. H3ll he looked bad at times this year. Im saying that based on all available evidence, there are reasons outside of his age that led to it. Just like in NE in 2019. IF he wants to play, and IF he commits without the emotional baggage of a divorce etc., and IF he has a really good coach and a top 10 team outside of QB (not loaded, many of his NE teams weren’t loaded but well coached), he is as capable as he was in 2020 or 2018. The last thing I wanna see is him go out like this or worse. However, barring serious injury, I think he easily goes out still a top 5 QB with the right team. SB win be da#med, I just wanna see him enjoying playing one last time cause it didn’t happen at all this year.

    @Lastdance

I hope so too and wish that all of those “ifs” to come true for TB12, especially going out being great and not getting hurt.

I love great football players like TB12, Mean Joe, Terry, Staubach, Starr, Horning, Brooks, Lynch, Barry, Jerry, LT, Munoz, Walter, Reggie, etc. The list goes on and on. I admire them and love watching them play the game at such a level of greatness, because they played a sport that I love and respect and am thankful for all that it gave me.

I’m a Bucs fan always, but a football fan first.

I’ve just seen aging sports legends hang on to long as they chase that one last time in the hopes of defeating the house in Father Time like a gambler, and it’s ugly with the likes of Favre, Ali, Montana, Mays, Rose, Ryan, MJ, Bird, etc… with Father Time like the house always winning in the end.

Understood and agree. I will be sad if he retires (though way less sad than if he plays again and is terrible or gets hurt)… but after a year or so I won’t even remember this last sh!thole season and just the decades of near perfection and the multitudes of SBs won and lost. But, I think he is evaluating it and will know if it was emotional and situational or if its him. I think if he comes back we can trust that he has one more long ride in the tank…. I’ll be honest, I love football but only because of my heroes. I dont have any left but TB12 and there is no one in the league any more that I connect with really at all. Ive been very clear that I am a player fan and only follow teams my favorites are on. So personally, this is a big deal because I probably won’t watch football much for years. Maybe old and grumpy, but I hate watching QBs run… always have. Thats where the game is going and Im not interested. give me Brady, Montana, Manning, Bradshaw, Staubach, Marino all day.

  83. Oneilbuc Says:

I agree with King 100 💯 percent Brady is done move on!!!

  84. Wild Bill Says:

I would be amazed if any team would pay huge bucks for Brady now. Only a team that was totally desperate for a qb would be seriously willing to spend large on an old qb who declined so far this past season. And I doubt Brady would accept a “show me” contract with a low base plus lots of incentives based on yards, completions and tds. The Bucs are in a terrible situation. Bring back a 46 yr old qb for big bucks after a career worst performance? The other option of going with two remaining qbs sucks also. They are between a rock and a hard place. Nobody is going to gift the Bucks a higher than average qb. Draft whatever you can, trade or buy somebody else’s back up or try to negotiate a contract with Brady based on performance bonuses. Bucs are between a rock and a hardplace.
